NEMA shuts down 6 IDPs camps in Adamawa

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday confirmed that it had closed down six Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Adamawa, following the return of the inmates to their homes.
Mr Sa’ad Bello, NEMA Coordinator in the state, told newsmen in Yola that more than 95 per cent of the 90, 000 IDPs in the ten camps operated by the agency, had returned home.

He listed the camps which were closed down to include those located in Bekaji, Kwanan Waya, Girei 1 and 2, Yola campus of Federal Polytechnic Mubi, and EYN Church.

Bello explained that the iDPs decided to return to their various towns and villages after the enormous successes recorded by the military in reclaiming and restoring peace to areas under Boko Haram insurgents.

“Following the enormous victory recorded by Nigerian Army in defeating Boko Haram and reclaiming all captured areas in Adamawa, the camps began decreasing.

“Almost 95 per cent of the Internally Displaced Persons living in ten designated camps in the state have returned to their respective villages and towns.

“And the agency found it necessary to close down six out of the ten camps in the state.” Bello said.

According to him, the remaining four camps are now sheltering less than ten thousand IDPs.

He however disclosed that latest population data matrix analysis showed that there were still about 100,000 IDPs living within communities in the state.

Bello said the agency was now focusing its attention in preparing those returning home, to pick up the pieces of their lives and make the best of the situation they find themselves.

“Managing the returnees back to their communities is the biggest challenge now facing the agency due to low resources.

“The dwindling economy in the country is directly hampering our activities to a large extent.” the coordinator said.

He also identified absence of accurate data of returnees, as another challenge to effective rehabilitation of those going back to their homes.

“Without accurate data of the returnees to the seven reclaimed local government areas of the state , we find it difficult to attend to the needs of the affected communities.” Bello said. (NAN)

TROOPS ARREST WANTED BOKO HARAM TERRORIST

In continuation of Operation CRACKDOWN deep inside Sambisa forest, troops have arrested one of the declared wanted Boko Haram terrorists leaders, and also conducted patrols and clearance operations within the theatre of operations.

At about 1.35pm yesterday troops of 143 Battalion arrested one Sulaiman Umaru, a suspected Boko Haram terrorists group member whose photograph is on the poster containing the photographs of the 100 Boko Haram terrorists declared wanted. He has since been moved to 28 Task Force Brigade Headquarters for further investigation.

Troops of 21 Brigade have continued with the clearance operations at Yerimari, while troops of 22 Task Force Brigade Garrison have also embarked on patrols along Dikwa–Mafa-Maiduguri road. The patrol was aimed at picketing the road to keep it safe and open.

Similarly, the same unit in conjunction with some elements of 112 Task Force Battalion conducted a fighting patrol along Dikwa-Gulumba Gana road. The team had a fierce fire fight with some Boko Haram terrorists elements in which the troops killed quite a number of the Boko Haram terrorists.

Unfortunately, while on their way back, the team ran into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Antul, a village south east of Dikwa, in which 7 soldiers and 4 Civilian JTF accompanying them sustained injuries. The injured soldiers and their civilian counterparts have been evacuated to 7 Division Hospital and Medical Services Maiduguri.

However, the patrol killed 2 Boko Haram terrorists and recovered 2 AK-47 rifles from them.

The patrol team had earlier intercepted 31 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), including women and children coming from Sunabaya, Gumule, Garno and Mane-Gana villages.

During preliminary investigations along with the vigilantes, one of the IDPs, Abacha Bulama, a native of Mane-Gana village, was found to be in possession of the sum of One Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,900,000.00k).

Although he claimed to be a businessman, his possession of such large amount of money arose suspicion.

While Bulama has been detained for further investigation, other IDPs have been handed over to Dikwa IDP Camp Manager for screening and further humanitarian assistance.

On their part, troops of 254 Task Force Battalion, 25 Task Force Brigade have moved to Ngalimeri and shelled Boko Haram terrorists hideouts at Budumairi, Goneri Baleni, Mallam Maitari, Malemiri and Gombori. Although there were no signs of the Boko Haram in the area as they have all fled, however, 35 persons were rescued, screened and rehabilitated at Damboa IDP camp. The troops also arrested 2 suspected Boko Haram terrorists with Dane Guns.

In a related development, troops of 192 Battalion, 26 Task Force Brigade also carried out clearance operations at Guduf Buba, Yagwa, Gamude, Kwatara Kasa and Kwatara Tsakiya villages. It was observed that at Kwatara Tsakiya, the terrorists have neatly removed the roofing of the dispensary and other buildings possibly to cart away later.

Apart of the formations and units mentioned above, quite a number of them have maintained blocking positions to prevent Boko Haram terrorists escaping from Operation CRACKDOWN and aerial bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force, while other troops carry out raids, cordon and searches in suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideouts.

Due to increased security, the theatre is witnessing increased humanitarian activities by various government and non-governmental agencies.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS ATTACK TROOPS ON HARBOUR

Troops of 21 Brigade and rugged team of Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF) on Operation CRACKDOWN inside Sambisa forest while on harbour for refitting, came under Boko Haram terrorists attack at about 1.45am today morning.

However, the gallant troops successfully repelled the attack. They further followed up with mopping up operations of the general area before advancing. They also recovered 2 corpses of the attackers and the following items; 2 AK-47 rifles, 2 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) bombs, 5 rifle magazines, mortar bombs and a belts of Machine Gun rounds.

Unfortunately 5 soldiers were wounded in action (WIA), as a result of mortar fired into the harbour area by the Boko Haram terrorists. The wounded soldiers have been evacuated to the rear for treatment.

Despite this incident, the morale of the gallant troops remains very high as they are determined to successfully clear Boko Haram terrorists.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

The alpha jets have served Nigeria well.
Time and again they have proved their effectiveness in close air support(CAS)
From Sierre leone to liberia to mali, to bakassi to Niger delta to North east
They are a proven variable
However, it is true they have been stretched beyond the reasonable by NAF- But i think that is purely based on the stupidity and kleptocracy of top brass and political leadership lacking vision
If you know how many fire-bases that could have been overrun without these Alphas...

Al shabaab attacks Army bases near Beledweyne

The Al Qaeda-linked Al shabaab fighters in Somalia have attacked Somali and African Union troops near the central town of Beledweyne city, residents said on Monday.

Residents said Al shabaab militants staged a massive attack on SNA and Ethiopian troops’ bases at Halgan area, west of Beledweyne, the regional capital of Hiiraan.

The attackers raided the bases from difference corners, sparking face-to-face gunfire between the militants and the coalition (SNA and Ethiopian army).

It was immediately unclear the casualty figures on both sides as a result of the Al shabaab attack on Halgal village, according to local villagers.

Cameroon, Allies Claim Gains in Fight Against Boko Haram

Cameroon and its allies in a multinational force are claiming gains in two operations last week against the Boko Haram militant group in Nigeria. Cameroonian casualties from the operations have reached hospitals in Maroua but morale reportedly remains high.

Thirty wounded Cameroonian soldiers have been ferried in the past four days to the military hospital in Maroua on Cameroon's northern border with Nigeria.

Among them is 26-year-old Fabian Ngo who says he was wounded when his vehicle hit a landmine returning from the Nigerian town of Kumche after raids that destroyed four Boko Haram training camps.

"While coming back, our vehicle climbed on a mine. That is how we had a shock, this incident. From there, they brought me here and now we are [making] a difference, I am feeling so happy. This is what we have been waiting for so long. Maybe in two months when my legs will get [treated] I will wear my uniforms and rangers and will go back and continue my mission," Ngo said.

Joseph Hamayadji, a 22-year old soldier, is being treated for snake bites he says he received near the Boko Haram training center at Kumche. He told VOA at least seven of his colleagues are missing.

He said they lost two of their colleagues in a loud explosion between Ganshe and Amcjide in Nigeria. He says he now feels better after receiving treatment at the military hospital and wants to go back to fight for his country.

Saturday, the multinational force said five Boko Haram leaders were captured, dozens of militants were killed and 60 women and children freed during recent operations. Cameroon spokesperson Issa Tchiroma said no soldiers were killed, but several were wounded.

Defense official Kumpa Issa, who is in charge of caring for wounded soldiers, visited the hospital Sunday. He said even in rough field conditions he is impressed with the rapid and professional care for the soldiers.

"The object of my visit here is to forward to the wounded soldiers the comfort of the head of state, his word of encouragement and his support. The head of state has been deeply touched. This message is also addressed to the medical personnel who showed that they are very professional. They are really efficient," Issa said.

A spokesperson for the soldiers, Abdoulaye Bello, said the wounded troops are ready to go back and defeat the terrorists.

He said morale remains very high and his wish is to recover quickly and go back to meet his colleagues at the war front.

Cameroon says Goshe and Kumche on the Nigerian territory has been a training ground for suicide bombers, especially young women and girls.

Cameroon says the militants have increasingly resorted to suicide bombings because their firepower has been drastically reduced following ceaseless attacks on their stronghold since December 2015 by the 8,000 member joint task force with troops from Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad, Benin and Niger.

After Years of Distrust, U.S. Military Reconciles With Nigeria to Fight Boko Haram

Less than two years after it blocked a sale of American-made attack helicopters to Nigeria from Israel because of human rights concerns, the Obama administration says it is poised to sell up to 12 light attack aircraft to Nigeria as part of an effort to support the country’s fight against the Boko Haram militant group.

But the pending sale of the Super Tucano attack warplanes — which would require congressional approval — is already coming under criticism from human rights organizations that say President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria has not yet done enough to stop the abuses and corruption that flourished in the military under his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan.

Officials at the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon have been bracing for a fight with congressional Democrats, in particular Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, over the sale of the planes.

The proposed sale reflects the warming of the relationship between the Nigerian and American militaries, which had frayed under Mr. Jonathan. The Pentagon often bypassed Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram, choosing to work directly with neighboring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

In addition to citing corruption and sweeping human rights abuses by Nigerian soldiers, American officials were hesitant to share intelligence with the Nigerian military, saying Boko Haram had infiltrated it. That accusation prompted indignation from Nigeria.

But that was before Mr. Buhari, a former Nigerian Army major general, defeated Mr. Jonathan in an election last year.

Since coming into power, Mr. Buhari has devoted himself to rooting out graft in Africa’s largest economy.

He has fired a number of Nigerian military officers accused of corruption, and American military officials say they are now working closely with some of their counterparts in Nigeria. The Obama administration is also considering sending dozens of Special Operations advisers to the front lines of Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram, an insurgency that has killed thousands of civilians in the country’s northeast as well as in Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Mr. Buhari has also pledged to investigate allegations of human rights abuses and has said he will not tolerate them.

A move to sell the Super Tucano attack aircraft to Nigeria, first reported by Reuters, would continue the détente between the two militaries, administration officials said. The Super Tucano, a turboprop aircraft, is designed for light attack, counterinsurgency, close air support and reconnaissance missions. It could prove useful as the Nigerian military tries to clear Boko Haram out of the Sambisa Forest, which is believed to hold large numbers of the militants, as well as kidnapped girls and women.

The administration has not made a formal decision to send a notification to Congress, but a senior administration official said he expected one soon. President Obama is considering a trip to Nigeria in July.

But already aides to Mr. Leahy, a sponsor of a human rights law that prohibits the State Department and Pentagon from providing military assistance to foreign militaries with poor human rights records, have expressed concern.

“We don’t have confidence in the Nigerians’ ability to use them in a manner that complies with the laws of war and doesn’t end up disproportionately harming civilians, nor in the capability of the U.S. government to monitor their use,” said Tim Rieser, a top Leahy aide.

“The United States is committed to working with Nigeria and its neighbors against Boko Haram,” said David McKeeby, a spokesman for the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs. “The Nigerian security forces and regional forces from Cameroon, Chad and Niger have made important progress in pushing Boko Haram out of many towns and villages of northeast Nigeria and the broader Lake Chad basin region.”

Gen. Mark A. Milley, the Army chief of staff, is attending a meeting of top African military officials, including from Nigeria, here in Arusha this week. Aboard his flight on Saturday, General Milley declined to comment on whether Nigeria’s human rights record had improved enough to warrant the sale, but said one of the reasons he was attending the meeting was to learn more about the African militaries with which the Pentagon is working.

Consideration of selling the attack aircraft to Nigeria is a sharp turnabout from two years ago, when the United States blocked the sale of American-made Cobra attack helicopters to Nigeria from Israel, amid concerns about Nigeria’s protection of civilians when conducting military operations. That infuriated the Nigerian government, and Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States responded sharply, accusing Washington of hampering the effort against Boko Haram.

“Let’s say we give certain kinds of equipment to the Nigerian military that is then used in a way that affects the human situation,” James F. Entwistle, the American ambassador to Nigeria, told reporters in October in explaining the decision to block the helicopter sale. “If I approve that, I’m responsible for that. We take that responsibility very seriously.”

Under Mr. Jonathan, the former president, the Nigerian military was accused by human rights groups of detaining and killing thousands of innocent civilians in sweeps of the militant group, a practice that Amnesty International said was continuing. This year the military rounded up several hundred men and boys in arrests that Amnesty, in a report it released last week, called “arbitrary, the hazardous profiling based on sex and age of the individual rather than on evidence of crime.”

The report said 149 people had died this year in detention in the Nigerian military’s Giwa barracks in Maiduguri, a city that has been a staging ground for the fight against Boko Haram. Among the victims were 11 children under age 6, including four infants, Amnesty said. The prisoners most likely died of disease, starvation, dehydration or gunshot wounds, the report said.

In a news release, the Nigerian military called the report “completely baseless, unfounded and source-less with the intent of denting the image of the Nigerian Armed Forces.”

Sarah Margon, the Washington director at Human Rights Watch, disagreed.

“Indications that the U.S. is going to sell attack aircrafts to Nigeria is concerning given the absence of meaningful reform within Nigeria’s security sector,” Ms. Margon said. “The U.S. must make clear that if the sale is to occur, critical steps, not just rhetorical commitments, on core human rights concerns must be an integral component for approving the sale

YES & NO.

However we do not have a choice. It would be folly to also say that the fight against the insurgency is in extra-time. With attacks in Tunisia, Algeria, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina-Faso, Egypt, Libya, Niger, Chad and Cameroun. Nothing is in extra-time.

We need those Super Tucano air crafts. Our Alpha-Jets are no good, ordinarily they should be transfered to the museum(not a joke), used to create an Air Force Acrobatics Team or sold off to private individuals.

Let them say whatever they want to say, fact we cannot expel is the fact that the A-29 Super Tucano is the world's best COIN aircraft.

The JF-17 is a nice plane, but it isn't a COIN based aircraft. We have roles for the JF-17, Super Tucano and Super Mushak in our air force.

On long haul flights, the JF-17 has to carry 2 fuel drops, with 7 hard-points that leaves us with only 5 hard-points, when we take out the wing-tips which are the exclusive reserve of AAMs, we are left with only 3 hard-points.

The Super Tucano on the other hand is Turbo-prop (far less fuel consumption than a jet engine), dedicated COIN air craft and can provide up to 5 hours of loiter time.

Well analysed

Two internal guns
With endurance of 8 hours.
Can carry wide range of weapons just like many other fighter jet AAM, ASM, PGM, cluster bombs etc.

What else can 1 ask from a low cost fighter dedicated for COIN.

It is actually the best for choice for Nigeria and other African countries currently.

No we cannot trust them, and there is also an 80% chance that they would disappoint us. However, the merits of buying the Super-Tucano cannot be over-looked. They are also cheap, so if we ever loose them in the future due to sanctions, we won't feel their loss that much.
