Very educative. That #10 though. . . Virtually everyone is guilty of it. We have at one point or another 'looked for' someone who was not lost. |

Rapmoney: Smarting is absolutely correct. The word 'smart' does not only refer to having mental agility or something. It also refers to > a sharp, stinging pain. > feeling upset and annoyed. It's my guess that the guy you mistook for a quarter-baked graduate was actually referring to any of these other situations. |

Rapmoney: You are right on the other ones but on no 1 you are wrong, with all due respect. Smarting is not used in the context of being smart it is used generally in the context of going through an emotional process... perhaps hurtful feeling... smarting from a loss...this is not used in the context of being brilliant or smart in everyday sense of the word. Peace |

IRserveMyComent:That's right and it's not as if looking for someone is entirely wrong, it's just better to use search for, because that actually conveys a more appropriate capture of what you are going for. 1 Like |

hardbody:I'm trying to show you the context in which some people use it. In pidgin, people freely say 'You dey smart oo!!!' It means you are biting more than you can chew! Does it mean it should still be correct grammatically when spoken in English? That's totally wrong! |

Rapmoney: Minus the fact that you are being very unreasonable, you also jump to conclusions quickly. How very sure are you in ur eavesdropping that the context of usage had anything to do with mental capacity? For someone who preached that we learn, you are doing a very bad job of it. DesChyko was right. You are wrong. 'Smart' is a verb and not just an adjective, and it is synonymous with 'hurt', 'stinging pain' etc. 1 Like |

Rapmoney, how did you know what the young man who said "you are smarting" was trying to say? Maybe if you tell us what he was trying to say, we would have a better idea. Smarting is a transitive verb. |
