ORDER AND DECENCY

-DEUTERONOMY 21:1-9

KEY VERSE:

"So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD" (Deuteronomy 21:9).

Evil practices, blood-letting, primordial and bestial practices demean men and poison communal space. In the Old Testament, when a crime was committed and the criminal went away, the whole community was held responsible. God was pointing to the need for the whole community to feel a keen sense of responsibility for what was going on around them and to move to correct situations that were potentially harmful either physically, socially or morally. Although the people were innocent of the act, the elders must still ask the Lord’s forgiveness for the shedding of innocent blood. And an honest attempt must be made to seek for justice. The elders represented the citizens at large. The judges, magistrates and priests from the nearest town of priest were likewise to be at hand. Thus, all classes would be represented at the purging away of that blood-guiltiness which until removed, was attached to the whole community. The requirement as regards place and victim are symbolic. The heifer represented the murderer, to die in his stead, since he could not be found. The heifer must be of full growth and strength, and must not have been ceremonially profaned by human use. As saints of God, when we know that an innocent party within our area has been wronged, we are not to turn our backs and say that we are not involved. Even the simple act of publicly condemning such action as displeasing to God would remind those who hear that God sees all and will judge the perpetrators of sin. However, if you are the one that is unjustly treated or accused, you should peacefully approach the throne of mercy and the all-seeing God will vindicate you at the set time. Never, for whatever consideration, resort to self-help in settling scores.

Text: Luke 11:14-28

Key Verse :
“And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered”
(Luke 11:14).


One of the great rewards that God has bestowed upon our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for His suffering on the Cross is that at the name of Jesus, every other name should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth, as all power has been given unto Him in heaven and in earth.

Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, opened blind eyes, cleansed lepers and freed sinners from the bondage and consequences of sin during His earthly ministry. Here in our text, a dumb victim of Satan had been freed and the devil cast out of him by Jesus. As the dumb spake, hostile and misguided unbelieving elements attributed the healing to the power of Beelzebub which they said Jesus used.

The Scriptures make it clear that unpardonable sin consisted in the denial of God’s power through the Holy Spirit in the healing process. And worse still is to attribute such miraculous healing and deliverance to Satan. How can Satan cast out Satan and thus divide his house and ultimately cause its fall? There is a power stronger than Satan’s: the power in the name and blood of Jesus.

Are you one of the doubters of the power of Jesus to heal, deliver and free the vilest of sinners from the consequences of sin? You can be free today only if you can believe, acknowledge your sins, confess them and accept the Lord Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. Every believer needs a profound, yet sublime, revelation of that Name to be able to appropriate the fullness of God’s blessings therefrom.

With a view to launch an emergency intervention in Nigeria, SIF sent an exploratory mission to Borno State in September-October 2016, and decided to intervene with the provision of humanitarian assistance for the conflict-affected population in Ngala Local Government Area (LGA).The mission opened its first operational base in Maiduguri in December 2016, and has been developing quickly.Three projects in the sectors of food security and protection are currently implemented: food distribution and blanket supplementary feeding activities funded by the World Food Programme (WFP), seeds and fertilizers distribution activities funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) activities supported by SIF’s own funds. In addition, an integrated food security, livelihoods and NFI project funded by CDCS (Centre de Crise et de Soutien) will be launched in September 2017.

Mission/ Role

Activity implementation (in cooperation with the Base Manager and Program Coordinator):To participate in the elaboration and the implementation of the projects.To define partnership modalities for the implementation of the projects when relevant.

More specifically:

To organize and supervise technical trainings for beneficiaries on: crop and livestock production and Income-Generating Activities and Village Saving Loans Associations.To identify main market-driven activities for women.To organize and supervise distribution activities, if necessary.To support food distribution and blanket supplementary feeding activities if necessary.

Monitoring (in cooperation with the Base Manager and Program Coordinator):

To make frequent field visits to monitor program implementation and to identify opportunities/ constraints/ adjustments needed.To hold planning and progress review meetings with local authorities, community leaders, and operational partners.To ensure quality control of the projects and the respect of agreed standards (including mainstreamed gender and protection, beneficiary participation, accountability, etc).

Jesus was so much loved and adored by some inhabitants of Jerusalem in His triumphal entry that they were moved to cut down palm fronds, and lay them alongside their garments, on the ground as a token of their affection for Him. They had seen Him perform numerous miracles and deliverances. And so, they would have persisted in singing hosanna, as Jesus approached the temple. But the tide changed as a result of the fierce opposition of the chief priests and scribes, who persuaded them to betray Jesus before Pilate, and influenced the people to place a curse on themselves and their posterity.

It was not as if the people were innocent either. In fact, it was to please them that the priests and prophets (who knew better) acted the way they did. They not only shed the blood of their innocent children, whom they sacrificed to Moloch, but also the blood of the righteous men that were among them. They so polluted themselves with innocent blood that they made themselves odious to all observers, including the Gentiles who in turn cast aspersions and make mockery of them when they are visited with divine retribution.

However, they were mistaken: God had not cast Israel off forever. If anything, He taunted the heathen in Lamentation 4:21. And so, for those who revel in the problems of others, alongside those that are instrumental to the calamities, sudden destruction looms. Moreover, those who ridicule God’s people (the Church) will sooner or later be made a spectacle themselves.
We ought not to gloat over the misery of others. Instead, we must recognize our mandate, as intercessors, to pray for the restoration of a straying brother or sister.

*KEY VERSE*: "Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year" (DEUTERONOMY 14:22).

“If you want only net blessings, pay on the net. If you want gross blessings, by all means, pay on the gross,” Seve Steward wrote in his article: Yes, God’s Word Is Clear. “When we consider giving a tenth of our net [income versus our gross [income], we are really asking, ‘How much can I give without giving too much? This kind of nonverbal response is rooted in selfish nature that resist God’s request that we help build His Kingdom by giving to our local church."
Our text reveals one of the Old Testament concepts that was sustained by the new covenant in Christ. And so, the misconceptions surrounding its veracity are totally unnecessary. Tithing required that the Israelites give 10 percent of the crops they grew and the livestock they raised, to the temple. The law also required multiple tithes which included one each for the Levites, the use of the temple and the feasts, and the poor of the land.
Our text also points to a set of categories which needs be affected by our piety: the Levites (full or part-time ministers in the house of the Lord); the strangers (within and without the church); as well as the destitute. These all make up the family of God, and should be treated as such. The destination of our tithe, it must be noted, is clearly elucidated in our text to be where “…the Lord thy God shall choose to set His name there”.
In our dispensation, the local church where we receive spiritual nourishment should be deemed appropriate to receive the tithe. Tithes and offerings should be given with pure motives and reverent attitude of worship to the Lord for His innumerable mercies. You must make up your mind to obey God always. Do not give reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves and cherishes a cheerful giver. As you do so, you relive Christ’s sacrifice life here on earth till He comes.
