What matters is Per Capita Income and not GDP and we fare very poorly in that category.

We are 150 Million so our GDP should be high!

Arming yourself with statistics on growth, especially as it affects Nigeria a country with politicians who can manipulate some agencies that rely on figures to come to a conclusion is deceiving.
May I ask the OP: what are the parameters for the ranking? Is it access to water, good roads, per capital in-come, access to health facilities, housing or what?
People forget easily how government can give statistics that do not colloborate with facts on ground.
It were better that we are ranked 100th and let us have stable electricity at least smiley

Current per capita listings for World bank, CIA and IMF are available at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita

You will be ashamed when you look at that list.

On IMF list,Nigeria ranks 140th in the world
on world bank list,Nigeria ranks 130th in the world AND
On the CIA list, nigeria ranks 144th in the world

and this is a country that is the world's 8th biggest oil exporter cry

^^^^ I'm not surprised at that position and that explains why most of Nigerians live in abject poverty.
We're ranked below Yemen and Djibouti despite the fact we have our oil money (with no industries and infrastructures to justify such high revenue from oil) to thank for that position, else we would have finished barely above Zimbabwe.

Population of 150M Naira
So much Oil
So much mineral resources - Though under mined
So much brain.

Yet we are 33 and we shd be jumping up?

Why are we deceiving ourselves? 33rd position indeed.
Re: Nigeria Is Now Ranked 33rd Biggest Economy Among Nations by Ehido(m): 2:50pm On Mar 16, 2010
This list is best looked at on a per-capita basis. A country like Norway that is Number 41 on this list for example is about the richest in the world, and u can not compare the standard of living of China the number 3 economy in the world with that of Germany the number 6 economy in the world, they are miles apart.

Nigeria is indeed a large economy but dividing the size of this economy by the number of people in this economy (per-capita) then we are way down. It also shows that we are not scratching the surface yet in terms of what we can achieve as a country if only we can get things right and clear these greedy old men that are busy accumulating wealth for their 5th unborn generation out of the way.

If we want to we can be a great nation. From everything going on now it is clear that we are not ready yet and it might just be too late before we realise it.

so much growth , , . . .  . . . . ZERO DEVELOPMENT.

Between 2004 and 2009 the number of generators imported intothe country trippled, the roads are now impassable, the public schools are worse off. Who cares about the useless 2020:20?

Thank you for this post, at least the country's ranking has improved and we are still on course to be among the top 20 by 2020.
For those who never want to see or believe anything good in Nigeria e.g Beaf, na_so and co this is  worth acknowledging and together we can take this nation to the promised land. So as we keep acknowledging and highlighting our failures as a nation we really need to also acknowledge where we have made improvements.
A friend of mine just got to Lagos from Benin and couldnt understand how his power supply has improved to the extent  that he was having supply for an average of 18hrs daily for a week and he is still counting.
Someone earlier said our roads have become worse please anybody who travelled from Lagos to Benin last year and have made the same trip in last month, would you agree?

You are judging with one road? What is the guarantee that the road will last through the rainy season?Should roads be even our headache in this day and age?

Look at the Chinese today, by 2011 they should have claimed the number 1 position even though their population would put their per capita much lower than most european and arab nations. However, the Chinese are focused on their planned achievements and rather than complain all the time, they assess their progress and make improvements.

Nigeria charted a plan to be among the top 20 economies by 2020 and now it's 2010 and we've already reached 33rd position from 59th position earlier in the decade. We're moving rapidly towards our set goal. That is simply what someone is stating and the whole world wants to descend on that fellow. What's wrong with Nigerians?

In China, when you get there, you will see development, and you will see how people are living, we do know there are poverty anywhere and everywhere in the world, but a 33rd nation in economy and 85% are living in poverty, that is monkey economy, cos we ave nothing to show for it

Nigerians always complain.

And complainers become victim to the circumstances they complain 'bout. Even when solution is passing their door step, they don't see anything good. The past is what they see. They keep criticisms and blames; all recorded in their memory. The physical positive changes aiint their concern.

In as much as you guys are saying the truth, let's stop complaining all the time.

Have ever heard that even if USA economy record zero GPD, China still have to do ten times more to catch-up with USA not to talk about taking # 1 from USA. In hundred years, China cannot pass USA just to let u know.
