an armed military drone has today crashed in dumge,in borno state.according to reports, the drone was fully kitted with missiles, local residents were reported to have spotted the wreakage of the armed drone shortly after it crashed.this event coincide with the defeat of boko haram terrorists in maiduguri and konduga, and also the crash of another military drone in the white house at washington DC.with the crash of the armed drone in borno, more speculations arises as to who owns the drone.Nigeria isnt known to use armed military drones in the war against boko haram, though it has a sizable fleet of surveillance drones.and the US has also only made use of surveillance drones so far.speculations about french involvement arises,as france is known to have military facilities in chad, cameroon and niger.the nigerian authouries have remained silent so far.

picture of the armed drone.it resembles a MALE US Army MQ-1C Gray Eagle UAV.but on looking closely,i discovered a few distinct differences between this drone and the US Gray Eagle,
*the fulcrums{legs} are bow in shape instead of the diagonally shaped lift present in the Gray Eagle.
*the nose is narrow and pointed, instead of long and thick.
this drone looks more like a pakistani "burraq" UAV.it also bear similarities with the saudi-arabian standard UAV.

Erm... sorry to bug you again. You say this is all happening within Nigeria's borders? On home ground have army equipment forcibly captured and have to recover it. Have to mount a military operation to recapture one of your own cities?! Holy moly brother that's seriously fv(ked up! Sorry for giving you so much grief it's just that I can't comprehend or relate to such a terrible situation, it really puts the crime issue in SA we're always moaning about into perspective... first world problems hey, crying about stolen cellphones etc while people are dying elsewhere...

That is war, no side has monopoly of scoring hits, war is war, both sides are armed with weapons, both can kill and be killed. That is real war !

You Southies don't know what war is like because SANDF performs only in photographs and on internet, you ask SANDF to deploy 30,000 man army with infantry, artilley, tanks, etc plus a complete air force of jets , helicopters , drones , ISTAR, etc, only then will you Southies know what war really is, only then will your SANDF be truly battle tested.

As at today 2015, SANDF is NOT battle tested, in Bush war old SADF deployed only 4,000 men about 25 years ago.

Since then, South Africa has NEVER deployed up to 2,000 men fighting alone, NEVER !

Your current fleet of air force jets have NEVER flown any combat mission !

You have NEVER written an exam, yet you laugh at those who have written exams many time over, you are really thoughtless !

Go to war, big war , all alone and let us see SANDF performance, not internet boasting of what you have never experienced.

Fight war at home in Soweto, fight against your own citizens and see betrayers, moles, traitors, and secret enemies, plus suicide bombers, then and only then call we call SANDF a real professional battle tested army, for now, SANDF is a photographers club grin grin

Nigerian army losing vehicle to Boko Haram and going back to fight and recapture it from the deadly enemy is a great achievement ! No army of cowards can ever do that ! Even the mighty American marines did not have courage to go back and collect their captured Humvee vehicles from Taliban terrorists, Nigerian soldiers are braver than American soldiers.....See photos !

Wow, thanks for the update and pics smiley that is genuinely very intriguing. Definitely an indication there are things going on behind the scenes that are being kept very much hushed up and out of the public domain. Is anyone here able to identify or recognize the weapons attached to the drone? May help to give an idea as to it's origin.

OK yes yes, but we would have had to have kept the apartheid government to have retained all those skills of fighting against our own people. I prefer our current relative peace and absence of continuous paranoia wrt the civil unrest of the days when we were doing just that (we used to get pretty good grades on our tests). So happy to not have to study all the time anymore honestly ( I'm still around kicking and breathing after personally writing a few exams over the years so I must've passed them all- how many "exams" have you written hero?). American drones are the best in the world and they crash dozens of times, all drones are prone to crashes, no pilot control.

SANDF does NOT have Seeker drone in service, so you have nothing comparable to Nigeria's armed drones in service

Seeker was used extensively to track rhino movements and try and look for poachers in the Kruger Park, so they are operational. We're not at war so obviously they aren't in service undecided If we need them they'll be fielded and with far more sophisticated avionics, surveillance equipment, targeting systems, weapons, etc than that cool little thing.

The Seeker 400 is fully developed and operational including integration of weapons systems, just in case the user wants to go on the offensive wink , with successful live firing tests using DENEL Mokopa precision guided air to surface missiles (similar to the US Hellfire missile but more modern, more accurate and with longer range) already completed. If you put some A-Darters under the wings good chance it would be able to knock one of those American Predator drones you love out of the sky.

Apologies for correcting you yet again, not only can they be put to work if required but they're designed, developed and produced entirely in house right from the seeker heads of the munitions to the tips of the wings, so be careful not to pull a hamstring as you extract your foot from your mouth. I know it is a burden having to store so much wisdom and knowledge in your head so I completely understand how you may have forgotten that RSA has been building UAV's since the 70's kiss

perhaps, but isnt it too overkill to begin using armed drones to fight an unconventional militia?,i know that drastic measures must be taken, but armed drones have the capacity to also decimate innocent civilians living in or around boko haram bases.
we also cant rule out that it belongs to france, though why would they fly it into nigerian territory?

Effectively, our American friend here is saying that the Nigerian military has no clue what they are doing. And that they need saving.

http://news.yahoo.com/huge-effort-needed-fight-boko-haram-us-commander-000118945.html

Washington (AFP) - Turning the tide against Boko Haram will require a "huge" international effort, a top US military commander warned on Tuesday, taking a swipe at Nigeria's response to the emboldened extremists.

Relations between the Nigerian and US militaries have been strained with Nigeria cancelling training by US advisers of a unit that was supposed to fight the militants, who have captured towns and villages in the country's northeast and vowed to create a hardline Islamic state.

The conflict has left more than 13,000 people dead and one million homeless.

General David Rodriguez, head of US Africa Command, said the Islamists' gains on the battlefield are cause for concern and "the number of people displaced is just staggering."

"I think it's going to take a huge international and multinational effort there to change a trajectory that continues to go in the wrong direction," Rodriguez said at an event organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

"The Nigerian leadership and Nigerian military are going to have to really improve their capacities to be able to handle that."

Rodriguez said the Nigerian military's response "was not working very effectively and actually in some places made it worse."

He added: "I hope that they let us help more and more."

Nigeria's ambassador to the United States, Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye, complained in November that his country is "not satisfied" with US support for the struggle against Boko Haram and that Washington has blocked the sale of some military hardware over human rights concerns.

In a visit Sunday to Lagos, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington was "prepared to do more" to help Nigeria counter Boko Haram.

Nigeria has the largest army in west Africa but has come under criticism at home and abroad for failing to stop the advance of Boko Haram.

The United States was working with Nigeria to build a comprehensive strategy "across the board, not just military," that encompassed education, economic development and health care to address the needs of the population in the north, the four-star general said.

Another "big focus" was to bolster the country's intelligence gathering, added Rodriguez.

Nigerian Water Shortage Is Bigger Killer Than Boko Haram: Cities

(Bloomberg) -- The lack of running water killed more people in Nigeria last year than Boko Haram.

While the terror campaign claimed more than 4,000 lives, the shortage of potable water and poor sanitation led to about 73,000 deaths, according to WaterAid, a London-based nonprofit.

The water deficit isn’t limited to isolated areas in the country’s vast north. In Lagos, about 15 million of the coastal metropolis’ 21 million have limited access to piped water.

Africa’s accelerating urbanization is colliding with governments’ failure to provide the most basic services. Next year alone, Lagos will add more than the population of Boston, worsening its infrastructure shortfall.

“Water is strained, transportation is strained, housing is strained,” Toyin Ayinde, the state commissioner for planning and urban development, said in an interview.

Folks still need about 25 gallons a day, the state-run Lagos Water Corp. reckons.

That’s where Mohamed Adamu comes in. Starting at 5 a.m. every day, he fills 10 jerry cans and walks down rutted streets to deliver clean water to corrugated iron-roofed homes in the Otumara district about a half-hour walk away. Vendors like him are known as “mairuwa” -- or “water owner” in the Hausa language.

“This is just something to do until you get a better business,” said Adamu, 36, who migrated two years ago from northwestern Kebbi state, some 530 miles away. “It’s the type of work you can’t do for long because it’s hard on the body.”
Flight to Lagos

Thousands like him have fled northern Nigeria to escape both the rural poverty there and the Islamist insurgency in Africa’s largest economy. The government says Boko Haram has killed more than 13,000 people since 2009. They killed at least 4,740 last year, more than double the number in 2013, Bath, U.K.-based risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft estimates.

Just yesterday, at least 65 people were killed in the northeastern city of Maiduguri during a Boko Haram assault on the capital of Borno state, according to a local militia member.

“Everybody is worried about Boko Haram but the average Nigerian continues to see water as a private good not a public good that has to be provided by the government,” said Idayat Hassan, director of the Centre for Democracy and Development, a research institute based in the capital, Abuja.

The water company’s capacity is 210 million gallons a day compared with the 540 million gallons needed by Lagosians. Its potable piped water reaches about 7 million people. That leaves two-thirds of the city struggling to find safe water.

“Mairuwa are one of the most common forms of informal water supply,” said Oluseyi Abdulmalik, a communications manager at WaterAid Nigeria. “They’re filling the gap of what government’s utilities should be doing.”
Meeting Demand

Lagos water officials have developed a $3.5 billion plan to more than triple capacity to 745 million gallons a day by 2020 to meet a projected population of 29 million, according to Shayo Holloway, the company’s group managing director.

The third-biggest killer of children under the age of 5 in Africa is diarrhea, a disease that can -- in nine out of 10 cases -- be prevented by access to safe water and sanitation, according to WaterAid. Nigeria accounts for 11 percent of all global under-5 deaths, according Unicef.

Nigeria isn’t the only sub-Saharan African country struggling with shortages; 325 million people on the continent didn’t have access to improved drinking water in 2012, according to a World Health Organization and Unicef joint report last year. Dakar, Accra, Abidjan and Nairobi were cited as other water-stressed cities.
Reselling Barred

Today’s water woes were deepened by a 2009 law that barred past distribution methods. Until then, residents who could afford a direct connection to the main line stored water in tanks and sold it to neighbors on a pay-as-you-use basis. When such reselling was made illegal, police seized vendors’ tanks and disconnected them from the mains.

“The mairuwa took advantage of our stopping to bring water from outside,” said Ogundele Agbede, 80, a retired civil servant who was forced to shut his sideline selling water after more than 30 years.

Vandalism of the water pipes remains frequent and even when the pipes are intact, the flow is as erratic as electricity supply in a country that suffers from daily blackouts.

At the Dustbin Estate slum, where the ground is soft from building over a refuse dump and swamp land in the city’s southern Ajegunle district, pipes paid for by development organizations are often broken. Sanitation in the community is poor. Residents dump bags of trash and feces into an adjacent canal, looked on by grazing goats and emaciated cows.
Vandalized Pipes

“They sabotage this one a lot,” Tolulope Sangosanya, 32, the founder of LOTS Charity Foundation, said pointing to one of four pipelines and the faucets her group installed there. “Sometimes they go and break it in the middle of the night.”

In Otumara, many from Agbede’s association sunk boreholes to secure a new source to continue their trading business.

“Very unfortunately, 90 percent of the boreholes are not drinkable,” Israel Akintimehin, 55, a pastor dressed in a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball vest, said in an interview at his Cherubim and Seraphim Church of Zion. “It’s a very big irony, we’re surrounded by water, yet we do not have good water.”

Beeld reported that former soldiers of the SA Defence Force were part of a multinational team of private military experts on their way to Nigeria.

The Afrikaans daily reported that this was at the request of the Nigerian government, and that the team of about 100 members would train Nigerian soldiers for a massive defence effort.

The first goal of the soldiers, backed by South African expertise, would be to free the remaining Chibok schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram last year.

Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for the department of international relations could not be reached for comment.

About 227 members of the Nigerian Army serving with 3 Armoured Division in Jos, who were allegedly dismissed by the military authorities on Friday protested against their General Officer Commanding (GOC), asking for the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The soldiers who stormed the Plateau State NUJ Secretariat in Jos with placards said they were unjustly dismissed without any known offence and without the benefit of fair hearing.

The leader of the protesting soldiers, Sergeant Abiona Elisha, said, “We were dismissed this week Tuesday from the service of the Nigerian Army after sending us to go and suffer fighting insurgency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.

“All of a sudden, we were recalled to the barracks and made to face trial. Even in the trial, we were not given the chance to defend ourselves. They just took decision and dismissed us. We were not even told what our offences were during the so-called trial.

“We are surprised that we can be treated like this in our own country. We were sent to fight insurgents without weapons. A lot of our colleagues were killed in the course of defending our fatherland. Even those who are in hospitals treating injuries they sustained from battle fields were also dismissed while still on hospital admission.

“The worst situation is that families of our colleagues killed in Adamawa and Yobe are languishing in hunger as Nigerian Army refused to pay their entitlements.
The soldiers called on the President and Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Kenneth Minimah, to intervene in their case and reinstate them.

When contacted, Deputy Director of the 3 Armoured Division Jos, Col. Texas Chukwu, said : “I am not aware of the development; I just returned from Yola on Tuesday. So I am not aware of anything. Thank you.

The SANDF men ran so fast one of their Gecko vehicle wheels/tyres came off, Seleka was close behind them, SANDF abandoned Gecko, began to do Olympic Springbok race for life, performed speed race as if spectators were cheering, lost ALL four Gecko vehicles, some Toyota 4x4, and new uniforms plus nice kits.

Nigerian army? The 3 photos you posted are of vehicles Naija Ninjas have destroyed, the tracked APC photo has been repeated here shown over 20 times, burnt to ashes, the Mowag APC photo has been posted here repeatedly over 20 times recaptured by Nigerian soldiers driving it around Konduga town with crowd cheering and hailing the champions of Africa, the Boko Haram leader in your photo is dead....Nigerian army of courage put pumped bullets into his lungs and also hammered his head.

Anyone who calls Nigerian army cowards has been proved wrong in 7 days o ! Recaptured all APC and artillery lost in Baga as Boko Haram abandoned equipment and ran away for dear life like Mandela's SANDF Springbok photomania army o !

Smoking hot NA infantry repelled 6 simultaneous attacks on 3 different cities all at the same time, withdrew only from Monguno temporarily to reload more ammunition, returned back to counter attack Monguno in 2 days, roasting Bokos as we speak.

Now show me how South African army has done any combat like this in the past 20 years fighting alone .....Seleka slaves = SANDF tonguetonguetongue

That is how it compares!
.

We are bringing in new topics, yet you are still crying Seleka which lost hundreds members as compared to only 15 which we lost, a war which is 2years old. Ain't you getting tired of singing the same old song over and over again? Seleka are losers!! Nigerian military are losers in their own land.

Means Nigerian military has the most advanced drones in Africa, first country to use missile armed drones in war !

See the military that @THIZA calls rag tag, LOL !

We are one of the most sophisticated military forces in the world today !

You tell a South African mugu that nobody really knows all the weapons Nigeria has, they will still be arguing like fools.

Mumu village candle light South Africans say Nigerian air force has no PGMs or air to surface guided weapons...LOL

.

Same as you will never know the weapons that SANDF use. However, your story is just a hoax to scare Boko Haram. Drop one PGM and Boko will believe you

Do you even want to associate the failed drone to Nigerian military? Shame, all the defence industries always play on top of your head by selling you the rejects.

Well, it is true. I head your military was trying to put the drone to the air and unfortunately it came rolling down to the ground hardly three minutes on the air. What a blunder of wasting your hard earned money!!! First it was Israel and now is China. Bwahahahahahabababab!!!

picture of the armed drone.it resembles a MALE US Army MQ-1C Gray Eagle UAV.but on looking closely,i discovered a few distinct differences between this drone and the US Gray Eagle,
*the fulcrums{legs} are bow in shape instead of the diagonally shaped lift present in the Gray Eagle.
*the nose is narrow and pointed, instead of long and thick.
this drone looks more like a pakistani "burraq" UAV.it also bear similarities with the saudi-arabian standard UAV.
there are many drones with similar shapes, you only differentiate with the wpecs and country of origin.

One thing in short, you can never claim territory using drones especially the faulty ones. You have been dubbed again with drones that come falling from the sky.

Boko will not worry, they will just leave the drones to drop down by themselves and remove all the weapons and use them against your military. You are being warned!!!!

Even the mighty American marines did not have courage to go back and collect their captured Humvee vehicles from Taliban terrorists, Nigerian soldiers are braver than American soldiers.....See photos !

careful mate. Don't give our little southie friend and heart attack. Any war in south Africa would be a war pitched between two cowards, so never expect it to be so advanced. There will be no suicide bombers, no use of mines or ieds, there will be No use of AAA technicals, and the conflict will end up quickly in the dialogue table, cus they have no stomach for casualties.
