Before we grumble...consider a few facts

1.When we privatised electricity distribution and generation, the price increase was written into the law that governs the thing.

2.We need anything between $300-900billion to get light 24/7.

3.Privatization means that you pay more from your pocket.

4.We have to pay our bills...and let's be frank...we pay bills lower than countries like Ghana...who pay twice as much as we do.

5.Electricity is not a free lunch.

Although I am in agreement with the principle your post promotes, I must correct your figures.

Following the estimated Texas bid quotations, it costs about US$400million to build a 1,000MW gas-fired thermal power plants (i.e. the type we have in Egbin, Lagos State).

If we want to replicate multiple Egbin type plants using converted LNG from the Niger Delta to generate up to 100,000MW of electricity, the estimated cost will be about US$40billion only. Let us even add freight costs, expat costs, costs due to contract slicing/enhancements (typical around here), US$60Billion should do it. Notice that this is not anywhere near your quoted figures.

Nevertheless, US$60billion is not chicken change and today's Nigeria does not have such finances. It is not beyond our capacity thou, to finance this project with a combination of public funds, private equity, FDI and domestic debt. However, this will require a certain level of good ratings, commitment, doggedness and sincerity of purpose which is currently non-existent in Nigeria.

Bottomline, Nigeria is not a serious nation and Nigerians are not yet a serious people enough to achieve this feat.

We will not have 100,000MW electricity production in 2030!

You do know its not the entire parastatal that was privatized.we have generation & distribution. We never had power for 4 months not even for 2 minutes but the bill came and i am to pay 12 thousand for the 4 months.so tell me,what am i paying for?complained at their office and was told the transformer was metered.whatever that means.

Power has been in private hands since 2014....and it is run by DISCOS and GENCOS...not by the govt.

Is GSM owned by Nigerian government. Wrong example bro.
Cromcruach91:

GSM!

Prices were sky high back in 2002....and service was bad.

The money earned from the sky high prices was used to pay for improvements to the infrastructure which meant better services...and eventually prices came down.

Scam or not...we need money to fix power in this country...and since it has been privatized...we are paying for the pleasure.

But govt does not run power.

DISCOS and GENCOS have been in charge since 2014...and they are all PRIVATE companies.

Who are those running these private companies?
They just hand it over to their brothers and kinsmen. Electricity was more stable under government than it is now. This private companies are nt contributing any fucking thing for the improvement of electricity... They are just interested in collecting monies. While some under pay, and some don't pay at all, especially in the north, if i see electricity 24/7 den we can talk bizz because i know how much am spending on petrol monthly

Are you for real? So bloody what if the increases were written into contracts signed during privatisation? Can't contracts be re-negotiated, and laws repealed? Does that law give the DISCOs a right to use such increases to extort the masses? shocked

You pay bills lower than Ghana. Do you get the same amount of electricity supply that residents of Ghana get, every day? undecided Do you earn the same kind of wages?

Guy, please do not let me insult you. Electricity bills were increased less than 24 months ago under the MYTO Tarriff plan. Electricity supply hardly improved. Now, they are trying to invoke another increase. May thunder fire them all, over there! angry

You are talking as if you are from outer space, and NOT a Nigerian. undecided When SIM cards were 10,000 naira at the inception of GSM Services in Nigeria, how many people had a mobile phone? When the prices dropped, how many people were then able to get a phone?

How can you even compare the telecoms sector with the electricity supply sector? Are the variables, dynamics and the context the same? Before you type always do your findings. When they claimed to have privatized the power sectors and the better part of it was sold to the croonies of those in power as at that time. Do you still called that full privatization It"s all scam bro. We are even paying more for what we don"t use (electricity). We had no light for almost 3 months and we pay higher for that period than when power was available a little. Anything goes in Naija. Jx make the little change you can around you

Generation in Nigeria is 7000mw..we lose 2000mw due to bad transmission system.

We need 10000mw to power Lagos alone....

South Africa generated 44000MW

Wrong!! angry The Federal Government only divested its interest in the six GenCos, while selling off 60% of its shares in the eleven (11) DisCos to private operators. The federal govt still owns 40% shares in these DisCos, and the Transmission Company still remains fully under government ownership.
