What do they do with phones in the class. All these devices have restrictions over their use. Even the produces of such phones hardly allow their children use such devices. In Nigeria, our children watch everything and use everything without any restriction. That is why our future us doomed with the current generation of children we are having these days.

I support this corporal punishment. It will serve as a deterrent to others.

Then take the the child to a school that practice modern laws.

Sorry, it's not my child and yes that is what PTA is there for! Schools dont make rules without the input of the parents - Bet you have one right?
..and ehm, the kids are evolving and adapting to the new society, while their parents and the school are still living in stone age. I bet they will also use 4 figure table when writing exams?

Did the kids break the school rule? Yes
Is the rule archaic? A resounding yes.

Rules that involve destroying personal properties.

The punishment is insensitive, authoritarian, destructive and shortsighted. Surely, that are other non wicked alternatives punishment they could have used.

It is because of people like you I refused to join the military. See how you're judging the case from two paragraphs and a 30 second video that explains next to nothing. I for find you and flog sense into your synapses.

As a parent, I use my hard earned money that I worked tirelessly for to buy a phone for my child so as to track him or her in this evil world we live in. That child defies school rules and takes it to school. The school finds it and asks my child to destroy it in front of the whole school under duress with a camera in front of her. I don't have this information but then I wake up to see the video on Nairaland frontpage, bros, people go die.
Spare the rod and spoil a child.you used your hard earn money to destroy your child.how can you bring phone to secondary school to learn or watch porn.pls let's stop this non sense.if something want to happen it will happen. That phone can lead her to more dangerous people if you don't know that they are more vulnerable to scammers.

If as a parent, you had worked even more tirelessly to inculcate a sense of being law abiding in your child BEFORE you worked tirelessly to buy them a phone, you will find that not only will your child's phone remain intact and useful for the purpose for which you bought it, but the child will even use that phone lawfully to carry him to greater heights, rather than use it to continue to break the laws of his society and end up firstly with a destroyed phone, and lastly in EFCC custody or worse.

In hopes that you are actually being objective albeit to a limited knowledge. I teach in a government school and the pta meets at least 4 times a term. One of the directives given by government which is in turn relayed to the parents Is that phones are prohibited on school premises for students. Where such is found the phone confiscated, thrown into water and removed only at the close of work for the day for the student to take home. In addition however on our own we advise the parents to tell the students to drop their phones with the teacher or vp once they get to school. That way whatever monitoring you want to do can be done without causing distractions for your kid and others.

Hope you don't breed indiscipline through your children in their school? Cause your comments are off it. Schools have rules. If you cannot abide by the rules, don't go there. Period!

Subjecting a child to such a treatment is inhuman and absolutely wrong. This is one of the reasons why we find it difficult to fight for our rights in Nigeria. You can't imagine how broken that child would be now, how scared she would be to speak up in the face of challenges.

The right thing to do is to confiscate the phone and ensure her parents get involved before it's released back to her.

Try this kind of crazy stunt in a developed country, that teacher is back in the labour market right away. To get a job will even be more difficult cos it will be on record that he/she had been involved in a case of child abuse.

NB
If the school rule does not clearly state the destruction of phones then how could this be justified in any reasonable way.?

I don't just understand some people, the school says they don't allow phones, I believe all this have been made known to the students or even there parents before enrollment. I bet some of the parents don't even know there child go with phone to school. Okay let's say the teacher seized them, I know students they'll definitely look for a way to break into that office just to get their phones back, so it's better to destroy them. If you can't yield to instructions you leave.

Only in Nigeria will such a thing happen, this is a total display of madness and it shows how uncivilized the teacher and the school management is, watching the tape I felt like I was back in the ’90s, how will someone in his right state of mind make such judgment, even if the school has rules and regulations there should be a better way to handle this situation, I am short of words this is barbaric and a total display of frustration!

I sincerely don’t think it makes any sense destroying the mobile phones. They should be seized and there parent should be asked to come and the. Attendees to accordingly. If this was my child (the girl in the video) I would so much sue that school for so much cause I don’t know why anyone would video her, let it off on the internet and all that crap.

NwekeUG:
IgbereTV captured a video showing a student of the Federal Girls College Akure destroying her phone and those of her schoolmates under the supervision of her teacher.

According to IgbereTV reports, the students violated the rules of the school by bringing their phones to school and as punishment, one of them was asked to destroy all the phones during the school’s morning assembly.

Stone age law you mean? So why should we border to change the constitution if the law is total and infallible?
My opinion is, kids should go to school with a communication device. Put it off once you enter the gate, and put it back on once school activities are over. In this time and age, knowing and or having direct information of your wards is paramount.
I repeat, a communication device!

I know you typed before you think. A right thinking man will go to the school since use of phone is crime to explain why his child needs to use a phone. The hard earned money you use to get a phone for your child is another parent's money for feeding their bingo in a day and yet their child is without a phone.
You are missing the point, the issue is that the school has no right to destroy another person's property without the consent of their parents. Imagine you are wealthy, one of your kids drives a car you got him/her to school, against the school rules. The school punishes him by asking him to burn/damage the car. Will you be okay with that or does that make sense to you? Maybe you think the phone looks cheap the reason you are okay with what the school did. What if it was a very expensive phone owned by one of the kids parents that happened to be taken to the school that day? Destroying another person's property is not the right thing to do. Some nigerians do not know their right, the reason people in position of authority feel they can can act anyhow

Firstly, yes they are old school institutions. But all institutions have their rules and this here has happened accordingly.

Secondly you knowing that govt schools here are old fashioned could have avoided the unnecessary rant that is now not related to the issue at hand. Knowing full well that the school in question is a public school.

Charity must begin at home. Any child that can't be well-groomed at home will grow to become law breaker in society. Since the children of today will grow to be leaders of tomorrow, nothing should be compromised in making them law abiding children in their respective schools.

Believe me nobody will die but if there is anyone to die it should be you.

In my first son's school the parents will be forewarned that phone is not allowed from day one and students too. Should you defy it, you will be lucky that it is just the phone that will be destroyed. But if the principal woke up from bad side of the bed that day your schooling program with that school will be destroyed because it is you that will carry your locker and cross the gate by yourself for yourself. There are other schools that allow it, simply go and enroll your child there.
