From experience, some parents don’t even know their children have phones.
Wuno29:
I don't just understand some people, the school says they don't allow phones, I believe all this have been made known to the students or even there parents before enrollment. I bet some of the parents don't even know there child go with phone to school. Okay let's say the teacher seized them, I know students they'll definitely look for a way to break into that office just to get their phones back, so it's better to destroy them. If you can't yield to instructions you leave.

Firstly, yes they are old school institutions. But all institutions have their rules and this here has happened accordingly.

Secondly you knowing that govt schools here are old fashioned could have avoided the unnecessary rant that is now not related to the issue at hand. Knowing full well that the school in question is a public school.

You missed the point. I have the right to criticize a law. You said its government school right? So it's of course open for public criticism or are you a dictator?
I did not comment on whether the kids broke the law or not, my position is simple; Parents should be able to know their wards location at ALL time. The law is old and should be reviewed just like every other archaic laws in this country.

It is because of people like you I refused to join the military. See how you're judging the case from two paragraphs and a 30 second video that explains next to nothing. I for find you and flog sense into your synapses.

As a parent, I use my hard earned money that I worked tirelessly for to buy a phone for my child so as to track him or her in this evil world we live in. That child defies school rules and takes it to school. The school finds it and asks my child to destroy it in front of the whole school under duress with a camera in front of her. I don't have this information but then I wake up to see the video on Nairaland frontpage, bros, people go die.

And when you finish "dieing the people", what next?

Next time learn to air your opinion after reasoning. Rules are made by each school and should your child break it, she must bear the fallout of it. Feel free to train her at home or get a private tutor for her, Mr Know All.

Good response!

This is wickedness, why not just seize the phone and invite the parent for questioning.

The teacher deserves to pay for it if I'm related to the student.
This kind of unreasonable comment always vex me,rules are rules,it is a formal organization for fvcks sake, their school their decisions, children need to learn the hard way ,stop this fictitious reasoning.

Stone age law you mean? So why should we border to change the constitution if the law is total and infallible?
My opinion is, kids should go to school with a communication device. Put it off once you enter the gate, and put it back on once school activities are over. In this time and age, knowing and or having direct information of your wards is paramount.
I repeat, a communication device!
Nokia touch is also a communication device, same way a 3310 is, so if you want a communication device for your kid get them one of the above. If you are not a teacher or an educational supervisor you will not know the extent of damage caused by the phone to both the owner and her fellow students.

When you all are online you are always quick to assume your freedom of speech gives you more sense than others. Do you genuinely think this was the first resort of the school authorities? Do you think there would not have been days where those phones were seized and returned? The event in question happened during assembly meaning all authority in the school must have been aware yet they have support. All of them can’t be insane na if they weren’t sure they’d be able to defend the decision.

Only in Nigeria will such a thing happen, this is a total display of madness and it shows how uncivilized the teacher and the school management is, watching the tape I felt like I was back in the ’90s, how will someone in his right state of mind make such judgment, even if the school has rules and regulations there should be a better way to handle this situation, I am short of words this is barbaric and a total display of frustration!

Even if you catch my children watching porns on their phone, you dare not tell them to destroy it. You can beat the hell out of them, but do not destroy any of their properties or else, we go get problem o
It is parents like you that end up raising prostitutes and criminals ,your disregard for discipline is embarrassing.if you take training your wards lightly, they will make you pay for it.

You are missing the point, the issue is that the school has no right to destroy another person's property without the consent of their parents. Imagine you are wealthy, one of your kids drives a car you got him/her to school, against the school rules. The school punishes him by asking him to burn/damage the car. Will you be okay with that or does that make sense to you? Maybe you think the phone looks cheap the reason you are okay with what the school did. What if it was a very expensive phone owned by one of the kids parents that happened to be taken to the school that day? Destroying another person's property is not the right thing to do. Some nigerians do not know their right, the reason people in position of authority feel they can can act anyhow
Pls get it right! If driving the car is a crime in the school, whatever happens to the car is right. Listen to yourself, you know it's a crime to drive a car yet you went ahead to get one for your child instead of you to have withdrew the child. No too much sense in that.

In my school, students are aware that they shouldn't come to school with their phones. When you are caught, it will be destroyed. So, why would a student come to school with a phone when he or she's aware that it would be destroyed. As, their parents come to drop them off, they are asked either to submit it to the school principal and collect it when they are going for vacation. Or the parents should take it back to the house. Some will still hide theirs to call friends and post on Facebook. When you're caught, just know that the phone will be destroyed. Shikina

School rules are school rules that needs to be adhered......i see nothing wrong with it as long as the students are aware of it beforehand. ...

On the other hand, the world is becoming strange and more wicked as the day goes by...
Parents now need buy mobile phones for their children in order to know their whereabouts. .
So I'll also say, the school rules needs to be adjusted in this modern era of kidnapping and all sort....

My suggestion is that the school should at least accept "Torchlight" phones only in the school premises so it doesn't distract the students.

Thank You! cheesy

The laws of the school do not dictate what is a crime and what is not. It is the laws of the country that does. The school is just like any other business or organization. Do you know that the person/school in charge of that can face legal actions and be made to pay for those devices? Destroying another person's property is not the right way to handle this. The devices should have been seized, the parents informed so they can be briefed about the situation and how it affects the child and collect back the devices. Unless there was an agreement between the parents and the school that phones will be destroyed, it is not right

You have little knowledge of law. Did you protest the school law before you enrolled your child? NO. So, no case. Don't forget the school in question here is a Federal school.
