As long as it is in rule books of the school it is the right decision. There is no phone in the school prospectus and as such will be treated as the school wishes.

And burning is the way to go? What happened to seizing the phones and never returning them?
Re: Akure Teacher Asks Student To Destroy Her Phone As Punishment (Photos, Video) by greygoblings(m): 4:27pm On Mar 03, 2020
If that is my child, the teacher will buy the phone back and will get sued for video taping my child and putting it on the internet. What happened to seizing the phone? Why video tape my child? I will close down that school.

Next time learn to air your opinion after reasoning. Rules are made by each school and should your child break it, she must bear the fallout of it. Feel free to train her at home or get a private tutor for her, Mr Know All.

As a parent, I use my hard earned money that I worked tirelessly for to buy a phone for my child so as to track him or her in this evil world we live in. That child defies school rules and takes it to school. The school finds it and asks my child to destroy it in front of the whole school under duress with a camera in front of her. I don't have this information but then I wake up to see the video on Nairaland frontpage, bros, people go die.

All of you quoting me are very mad hypocrites. If you read my comment well, you would see that I'm mad because the girl was videotaped and had it posted on the internet. None of you, I repeat, none of you would allow your child to be exposed on the internet for anything at all except for funny viral videos they post by themselves or by you, the parent. I would sue to school to court and win. Yes, the child broke the rules in school just like all you dumbass hypocrites insulting me did but I'd like to see where it is stated in print that such punishment will be the result of bringing a phone to school. Dumb lot. Na why SARS dey slap slap una all over town because you don't know your rights.Thunder strikes the next person who quotes me spewing bullshit

Mehn, people have really lost it. Abi do your brains have coronavirus or you've been smoking Colorado? Will it kill them to seize the phone for the rest of the term or even the rest of the school year? Truth is the child will be more remorse than this nonsense all of you mad people are supporting. Are you people insane how can you not see the evil here. If all schools, made videos of kids who break rules and post them on the internet, what kind of world would we be living in? Are you people mad?!

This is what u get when u subject a teenager in the hands of an incompetent, frustrated and bitter soul. Personally if I were the father, the school would have to personally tender an apology to my daughter that would still have to go viral online. I taught senior classes 4 a year and was a form master, pple tend to be surprised when I say I didn't need to use the Cain once or really even had to loose my temper..

I see you have brain Tumor! If ignorance is affecting you, just let's help you to be aware that making video of a child not trained from home is not an offence.. Pls feel free to sue them to court and am certain if am aware, I will represent them in full and without payment. The law says don't bring phones to school.

If the teacher had seized the phones, some people will definitely call them criminals.

Best thing to do. There is no justification for destroying so many phones. It is because many of us can't really relate this to economic loss.

I know you typed before you think. A right thinking man will go to the school since use of phone is crime to explain why his child needs to use a phone. The hard earned money you use to get a phone for your child is another parent's money for feeding their bingo in a day and yet their child is without a phone.

What is wrong is wrong, there is no any other explanation. The punishment was too extreme, it's uncalled for

This would serve as a deterrent to others. Where there’s no law, there’s no sin.

I know some people here would not like this because they have high tolerance for indiscipline and general bad behaviour which I suspect it’s as a result of their terrible upbringing.

When we cultivate the habit of taking responsibility for our action and possible consequences (which should also be enforced), we will have a better society.

You do not have the faintest idea about who I am yet you've assumed and gone ahead to describe what I would do in two different situations. Are you for real? Well I've got news for you, assumption is life's lowest level of knowledge.

Assumption is life's lowest level of knowledge. Nothing to discuss about there.

You've actually said nothing boss.

Everything has a measure of appropriateness.

You don't kill a flea with a sledgehammer.

I still insist that the act of destroying the phone is inappropriate.

It's very important for secondary schools especially to ban students from using smart phones in school. Asi8from the fact that it causes a lot of distractions, students use it to all sorts of rubbish including recording themselves twerking ,kissing and phucking in classrooms. You don't want some ill mannered to destroy the reputation of your school with pornographic pictures or videos everywhere on the internet.

If you cannot obey simple rules at this age, na him be say na corruption we dey nurture from small.

This is wickedness, why not just seize the phone and invite the parent for questioning.

The teacher deserves to pay for it if I'm related to the student.

Re: Akure Teacher Asks Student To Destroy Her Phone As Punishment (Photos, Video) by qanda: 8:52pm On Mar 03, 2020
How do I start...

1. I do not support the action of the 'offender' and support that punitive action was taken.

2. Breaking the phone is quite an extreme measure that may not serve as a deterrent (drawing from my boarding house experience at FGC Ugwolawo). Instructing a minor to break a phone is quite traumatic and I consider it a crime, 'Technology Crime and Abuse'. I understand that it is 'property crime to break someone else's cell phone'.

3. An effective measure could be seizing the phone and returning it to the child's parent at the end of his/her time at the college. A strong measure can also include suspending the minor for 1-2 weeks

4. I can bet that the phone was bought by the Child's parent. It can be assumed (except proved otherwise) that the child's parents were not aware that their child took the phone to school. Technically, the child is not the owner of the phone.

5. In my opinion, with the support and supervision of a schools management, senior secondary students should be allowed to use purpose-built internet-enabled devices for learning and research purposes. The knowledge available online is more than the combined knowledge of any schools workforce.

6. Secondary Schools should have wireless internet infrastructure to support students and staff learning. There are a handful of mobile technology-driven innovation/solution built for secondary school students, how do Federal Government College students benefit?

7. We live in an ICT age, kids are exposed to tech-driven devices at home. How do our Federal Government Colleges promote technology? Do they teach coding? Can the use of blackboard, whiteboards be supplemented with a purpose-built internet device?

8. To conclude, I have never been a supporter of extreme measures. I was raised by a No-Nonsense dad whose knock and slap can reset a brain. I preferred my mum's softer yet effective approach.
