Aren't politicians already using state police? Akpabio of Akwa Ibom is just one recent example. The ballot-stuffing in the SS and SE could not have happened w/o police help, no?

Or you think it'd get substantially worse? Anyway, imo you can make the chief of police an elected office or something. There have to be ways to get this done.

@ EKO ILE,

Fashola is doing very well but my concern is this: What are the provisions made for maintenance of these facilities?

You know our people you can build beautiful mall ,roads ,hospitals e.t.c for them but within 2 years they will sh1t everywhere and the facilities will be run down.Personal hygiene is something that most Nigerians lack and it shows in their work place and environments. It will be a shame to see all these great facilities fashola has erected go "down" because of lack of maintenance which is endemic to our society. Is there an agency which has been set to monitor these facilities and issues fines if they are not being maintained well?

Lagos begins e-registration

BY Olasunkomi Akoni
LAGOS—Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that his administration will soon commence the issuance of electronic identity cards with unique identification numbers to all residents of the state. He said it was aimed at creating a reliable data base of all citizens in the state.

Fashola, who spoke, after signing the bill establishing the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, in his office, added that the identity cards would also be used by residents to access government services and help the state in planning for its citizens.

Apart from the bill, which makes registration compulsory for all residents in the state, the Governor also signed the Heritage Sites Bill into law. The heritage law seeks to preserve and protect historical sites in the state.

From left; Dr. Ajibayo Adeyeye, Majority leader Lagos state House of Assembly, Gov. Babatunde Fashola, of Lagos, and Mr. Lawal Pedro, Permanent secretary Ministry of Justice, during the signing of the bill establishing the Lagos State Residents Registration Agencyin to Law at Lagos House Ikeja, Lagos. .Photo by Bunmi Azeez

Fashola said: “The Lagos Residents Registration bill that has just been signed into law is dear to our state. It will serve as a critical planning tool for the government and help us respond to citizens’ needs more effectively.

“Also, the law will help us deal with the issue of security as residents will be issued an electronic card with unique identification which they will carry for life.”

The governor said the registration was compulsory for all residents irrespective of their state of origins, adding that the government would strictly enforce compliance as soon as it becomes operational.

He said the pilot registration of civil servants had since commenced in the state and that the government decided to start with its workers to test-run the exercise.

He dismissed insinuations in certain quarters that the registration was meant for taxation purpose, saying that it was strictly to create a data base of all citizens for development purposes.

Fashola gets kudos for list of commissioners, advisers

The rumoured fuss within the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) over the composition of the proposed Governor •Ajomale: complainants are outsiders •It’s all about service, says Muse •Olanipekun hails governor Babatunde Fashola-led State Executive Council in Lagos is unfounded after all. DADA ALADELOKUN and BUNMI OGUNMODEDE who spoke with stakeholders, report.

LAGOS Governor Babatunde Fashola got kudos yesterday for  his list of commissioners, which has been presented to the House of Assembly.

Hours after the list of nominees fwas sent to the  House, there were rumours  that anger was brewing within Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the party in firm control of the state. Some members of the party were allegedly not well represented in the emerging Executive Council.

The governor  on June 24, wrote to the State Assembly through Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji. In the letter entitled: “Constitution of the State Executive Council”, Fashola  presented his 37 nominees for  the lawmakers’ screening and approval.

“Kindly note that in making these appointments, I have given consideration to the diversity of interests and persons within the state and the cost of governance, amongst many other considerations,” Fashola wrote.
The tell-tale of those opposed to the list was that it contained  mainly technocrats and non party members. But those who commented on the list yesterday said there was nothing strange in appointing those who have the wherewithal to deliver good governance.
Besides, they are argued that former Governor Bola Tinubu was able to leave behind a landmark after his eight-year administration because of the egg-heads he appointed into positions.

In fact, the party’s chairman in the state, Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale, laughed off the rumour when The Nation sought his view. He affirmed that such a rumour could not have come from within the party.

His words: “Those who are complaining are outsiders. How do they determine a party member? If the complainants are members of our party they will know that all those nominated are card carrying members of the ACN. Who are the technocrats they are talking about? Is it Akabueze? He played a prominent role mobilising  Ndigbo before and during the last elections.

We know what he did to ensure victory for the party. Are they saying that those who dumped their party to openly declare for the ACN are not party members? No committed member of the party will talk that way.

“Of course, there are less than 30 slots for commissioners and special advisers. So, there is no way the governor can nominate every member to become members of the State Executive Council. It is not possible. So, whoever is not nominated now could be nominated tomorrow, even for other positions. It is not true that those nominated are not members of the ACN.”

His vice in Lagos West, Rev James Omolaja Odunmbaku, echoed his position. To him, the rumoured rumpus in the party allegedly arising from the Fashola’s new cabinet is not only unfounded but false.
“It is not true that there is any crack in our party over the membership of the executive council.

There is no iota of truth in it because both the party’s leadership and the governor are in an unbroken rapport over the issue. They work hand-in-hand.”

Senator Muniru Adekunle Muse, who represented Lagos Central District in the 6th Senate, said: “Making use of technocrats in governance is not a bad idea; it is all about Governor Fashola’s passion for service delivery and good governance. However, I must say that it is not out of place if he includes party men of proven service records in his cabinet because everyone in the party worked for his first term achievements and indeed, his success at the polls in the April elections.

“I want to appeal to all that what should be uppermost in our minds is how to sustain the legacy of service to the people, which the Fashola-led administration and indeed, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) are known for. Fashola is a party man and as such, I believe he will take, adequate care of the party’s feelings by ensuring that members are represented in his administration.”

Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) also bared his mind on the issue. To him, the governor has done “perfectly well” by picking technocrats to work with him in order to carry the tradition of service for which he is known to loftier heights.

His words: “The governor has done what he felt should be done to see to it that he sustains his commitment to people-oriented service for which his administration is being celebrated, even beyond the shores of our country.

“We must understand that the moment he got re-elected, he became the governor of Lagos State and not that of his party. That is what our people must understand because at the end of the day, after his tenure, he is the one that will be held responsible for either his failure or success in office.

“No doubt, if he feels that they can work with him and achieve results, he can pick qualified ones from his party and even other parties; it is all about serving the people dispassionately.

United States’ President Barrack Obama nominated Kenyan-born Scott Gration as the country’s Ambassador to Kenya because he believed he could deliver; he did not consider party affiliation.

This is the trend going on all over the world. Politics has shifted from the era of ‘winner takes all.’ It is now about who can do the work well.”

As situation stands, most Lagos residents who are still basking in the euphoria of “Action Governor” Fashola’s re-election are full of hope that with the new cabinet, he is poised to take every segment of his administration to the much-desired greater height in the overall interest of all.

Fashola Signs Two Bills On PPP And Disability Affairs Into Law

…Calls for collaboration of everyone to make the provisions of new Disability Affairs law achievable

Jun 24, 2011 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Friday signed two bills on the establishment of the Office of Disability Affairs 2010 and the provision of an Office of Public Private Partnership (PPP) 2011 into law, calling for a collaboration of everyone including the media in making the provisions of the new Disability Affairs law achievable.

Governor Fashola who spoke at Lagos House, Ikeja explained that what is needed is to ensure that through constant engagement with everyone, the provisions of the new law are imbibed by all segments of the society.

Governor Fashola said contrary to the media war orchestrated by some people that the State Government had not hastened to sign the law, the bill was just being signed because it just got to his table.

"This is one of the best laws that we have. The beneficiaries should also understand our challenges. The solution to communication gaps is to seek information and not to run to the media. There should be restraints on all sides, constant engagement not aggravation. We do not have any problem with the idea behind the new law'', he emphasised.

The Governor said in terms of attention that have been paid to physically challenged people in Nigeria, the new law will challenge architects, engineers and policy makers more than before on the need to realise that the practice of yesterday will have to give way to more contemporary practices where it is ensured that no member of the society is left behind.

Governor Fashola added that before the new law, the State Government had issued several Executive Orders to change some of the existing institutional beliefs such as his directives that ramps be provided in all public buildings to mitigate power challenges and allow the able and disabled to climb floors.

"You will see an increasing number of walkways on roads we are building now. It is a deliberate policy to ensure that physically challenged people are separated from motorists when walking and also share the roads as shared assets. This law will compel us now to do a lot more to meet the challenge around us that nobody must be left behind'', the Governor said.

The Governor also appealed to health workers to continue to intensify efforts in the area of immunisation and vaccination to eradicate polio and measles which can lead to blindness.

"We must reduce the number of people who are physically challenged and ensure that we promote the emergence of a human workforce that its capacity of physical limitation is reduced overtime'', the Governor added.

Governor Fashola also commended the State Ministry of Health for intensifying the limb deformity corrective programme which is aimed at reducing disability in people through corrective surgery.

The Governor, who cited several infrastructural facilities provided by the Government to aid the people but which have not been put to use by them, stressed that the new law will need collaboration of everybody after a careful planning process to organise and integrate.

"For example, with the issue of making a number of seats available for the disabled provided under the new law, we should realise that the seats will not appear automatically. The Ministry of Transport should work with our various franchise owners like BRT to get special buses with dedicated seats. We may also have to check our urban planning laws and also engage the Local Governments which manage the parks on the provisions of the new law'', Governor Fashola added.

The Lagos State Governor explained that governments are now coming to the realisation that Private Public Partnership is becoming a best practice as the private sector is the engine of growth and driver of the economy.

He said funds that were hitherto locked up in banks and not acting in productive ways are being brought into the public sphere by encouraging private individuals and corporations who have capital to venture and partner with government to provide social service.

"This is another means of funding budgetary commitment apart from direct allocation, borrowing, raising of taxes by Public Private Partnership (PPP), you can The Governor reiterated that Lagos State has demonstrated deep capacity for close PPP transactions over the last few years with its success in the Taxi model, the Waste management model, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) model, Power sector model and security model.

"The bill will only give more teeth and direction to the operational capacity of the agency to bring on more versatility and institutionalise permanently this emerging global practice within our State'', he added.

Governor Fashola, who said the new PPP law is not the first to be enacted by the State, however said it repeals the former law on Private Sector Participation which has been amended severally and incorporated into the new law.

Speaking earlier while presenting the bill one of which he initiated as a private member's bill during the Sixth Legislative Assembly, the Majority Leader, Hon Ajibayo Adeyeye, said the new law on establishment of disability affairs law will safeguard those living with disability and equalise them with others.

He said part of the benefits provided by the new law that all public offices and buildings would be made accessible to disable people, adding that this must be achieved within the next five years.

Hon Adeyeye added that the law also prescribes that anyone who employs over a 100 people must include at least one disabled person, adding that every public bus service must reserve one seat out of every 10 available for passengers for a person with disability.

Hon Adeyeye also informed that one space out of every car lot in every car park must be reserved for a disabled person, adding that penalties are also prescribes for offenders under the law.

He informed that the Public Private Partnership law would regulate and formulate policies for private people seeking to provide public infrastructure.

"It also empowers the PPP to determine and charge tolls on such ventures. It will also ensure that users of such public infrastructures pay some form of users' fees to allow the investors recoup their funds", Hon Adeyeye added.

The Majority Leader explained that the law also prescribes penalties and punishments for organisations and individuals that seek to violate the provisions of the bill.

Prominent among those who witnessed the ceremony were the Deputy Governor, Hon (Mrs) Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire, Head of Service, Prince Adesegun Ogunlewe, the Body of Permanent Secretaries in the State Public Service and the Director General of the State PPP office, Mr Ayo Gbeleye

Fashola Reiterates Commitment To Reduction Of Foreign Medical Treatment

Fashola Reiterates Commitment To Reduction Of Foreign Medical Treatment
• As Indian Medical Mission begins Cardiac Surgery in Lagos

Jul 1, 2011 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Friday reiterated the commitment of his administration to reducing, to its barest minimum, the number of medical cases taken abroad from the State for treatment saying the capital flight resulting from such foreign treatments was not good for the State.

Governor Fashola, who spoke at the Lagos House, Alausa, when he met the Medical Mission from Ruby Hall, India, who are in the State to assist the local medical team to perform cardiac surgery in the State's University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), said his administration was also interested in developing a competitive exchange with India.

Governor Fashola told the six-man Mission led by Dr. Sameer Ghotavadekar,"Our objective is to reduce the amount of money we spend exporting patients to India for treatment. It is not good for our business. I want to keep that business in Lagos, I want to keep it for our doctors, I want to keep it for our nurses".

According to the Governor, "One of the responsibilities of government is the obligation to prolong life, to make it worth living and we can only do this if we keep our people healthy; a healthy workforce, a healthy population is a very useful asset to any nation".

"But as we deal the clinical end of cardiac issues, I think that we must remind ourselves that our work lies with the prevention areas of cardiac problems; continuing advocacy to our people about lifestyle choices about what they eat, what they drink, where they work, what they are exposed to", the Governor said adding that the aforementioned are "the quick wins that I think that, as a government, as a people, we should continue to emphasize".

He said Government started an advocacy programme for free screening for Diabetes and Hypertension "because a combination of those have been the two big risk factors for Cardiac problems", urging the leaders of the State's health sector to continue that advocacy and treatment.

Expressing joy that the Government is now developing local capacity for the treatment of Cardiac problems, Governor Fashola declared, "Many of the situations that you ultimately get to see, apart from the congenital issues, are sometimes preventable if they are detected early enough".

Thanking the Mission "for the exchange of partnership" that has brought them to the State, Governor Fashola, who said the frontiers of Medicine lie so far ahead, asserted, "I believe that as we improve and challenge you, you will remain also continuously on your toes because, don't under-estimate us al all, we learn quickly".

"But having said that, I think that this is relationship that is not new; it is a relationship that existed in our country when I was a child. My Science teachers in almost all the schools in Lagos were Indians. They taught Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. So, we have only gone back to the old way to start together again", the Governor said.

The Governor expressed the hope that the benefits and mutuality of the relationship between the State and India would continue adding, "Even if we are not exporting patients to you, we can still do business because you can be providing local consultancy which will be rewarding".

Reiterating the need for preventive healthcare in the State's Health Sector, Governor Fashola declared, "I think also when we look at the process of recovery treatment, we want to move our healthcare from the system that treats to the system that cares. That really is the healing component that I see".

"When I see people travel Overseas and they are right in the middle of strangers, I think they will heal better, they will heal quicker if you didn't change the food they were used to, if they saw relations around as they recovered after surgery in an environment that was theirs rather than in an environment where they were looking at total strangers", the Governor said.

Governor Fashola said leaders of the government should do everything possible to prolong life and make it meaningful and comfortable for the people expressing the hope that with the collaboration between his Government and India, more people would be kept alive and healthy in the State.

Earlier, while introducing the LASUTH and Ruby Hall, India team, Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Professor David Oke, said since the arrival of the Indian Mission, the team has carried out three successful cardiac surgeries one of which was on a two-year-old infant pointing out that it was the first of its kind in Nigeria.

He commended the Lagos State Government for being the only state in the country that has been able to harness the zeal, the will and the resources to put together a team to carry out the surgery, adding that the Government committed N35 million to the project.

Thanking the Governor for his interest in uplifting the health of Lagosians, Professor Oke said in the last six years, the LASUTH team has been able to conduct 21 cases adding that while at a Cardiac Conference in Uganda recently, he was able to bring to the notice of the international community that Lagos is a centre for Cardiac Surgery and has a Governor "who is willing and who is focused".

Among those present at the meeting were Leader of the LASUTH & Ruby Hall Team Mr. Bode Falase, Dr. Ariyo Idowu, Dr. (Mrs.) A.A. Majekodunmi, Dr. Adeola Animashaun among others in the LASUTH team, while Mr. Manoj Durairaj, Mr. Rajendea Khnde, Mrs. Pruja Dackin Khaward among others constitute the Ruby Hall, Indian team.

Fashola Bids Team Lagos Inspirational Farewell, Charges Them To Shun Desperation

Jun 25, 2011 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Saturday attended a send forth ceremony organized for the athletes of Team LAGOS to the National Sports Festival billed for Port Harcourt, Rivers State, urging them to compete to win but not to be desperate.

Governor Fashola who addressed the 384 athletes and 134 officials at the Rowe Park Sports Centre in Yaba added that any athlete who becomes desperate to win will end up cutting corners.

"When you become desperate to win, you cut corners, you cheat and even take performance enhancing drugs. We want our athletes in Lagos State to have a burning desire to win but never be desperate to win".

Governor Fashola said they must be ready to go and compete with deep burning desire to do their best, by climbing very high, running very fast, jumping highly and swimming very swiftly.

He urged them not to seek laurels in any manner that brings disrepute to themselves, their family, siblings or state, adding that any medal that is not obtained by natural exertions and performance will not last.

He said Nigeria as a country is reaping the benefits of its lack of adequate preparations in sports with shoddy performances, stressing that there is a need to go back to the basics which is to give opportunities to the young ones to compete among themselves.

Governor Fashola said if this is done and in the fullness of time, such young ones will become champions, saying: "I don't want to win a Gold medal that will be very difficult to retain tomorrow. It is easy to get to the top but very difficult to stay there".

He said it is not impossible for umpires to make mistakes during competition, but the athletes should not take laws into their hands and must always prepare their minds that as they strive to win, they must also prepare to lose.

He explained that in his political life there have been some high and low points but because of his sporting inclinations he has always taken the low points in his strides while celebrating the high points.

"During the last general elections, many people were asking me why I was engaging in a very vigorous campaign when it appears that the opposition is not formidable, but I told them that the sportsman in me will not allow me to take anything for granted", he said.

Governor Fashola wished them not just luck but the very best of luck that they can get stressing that they need it to avoid things like unexpected injuries at the last minute.

He reiterated that the Lagos State Government places importance on sports as a vehicle for doing many things such as development of the mind and body of people and for creating social interaction amongst young people.

The Governor said sports also represents an opportunity for employment because many young people are earning a living from their talents while their energy is still very potent and wished them journey mercies to Port Harcourt.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Sports, Mr Delano Conde had thanked the Governor for the adequate welfare of the athletes while in camp.

He assured that the athletes and officials of Team Lagos that will represent the State at the forthcoming National Games in Port Harcourt will make the State proud.

Prominent among those who were present were the Consultant to the Governor on Sports, Mr Roger Appleby, the Chairman of the State's Sports Council, Mr Agboola Dabiri as well as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports, Mr Wale Oladunjoye and many other sports enthusiasts.

Fasola is doing well in areas of infrastructures, even at that he needs to do more by making sure the contractors act responsibly, right the people of Alpha Beach and Igbo Efon areas don't care about the Eko Oni baje because their own Lagos is flooded now due to unending road construction. 2 kids died yesterday in the flood. The resident had to block the road for hours this morning,

This were the same people that voted massively for his second term few months back.

The other aspect his need to act is the LASU of school. I wonder if anyone graduates from that school. The so called part Time school just a fraud to say the list, I hear over the radio that some people have to abandon the program after spending up to 8 years with out end in sight. incessant closures multiple missing results without any explanations.

You might want to read the article all over again.

This is a medical goodwill mission from India, they are in Lagos to help out with cardiac surgeries free of charge and by extension pass on cardiac surgery techniques and knowledge to our local doctors.

Fashola needs to concentrate on providing modern underground drainage AND pedestrian SIDEWALKS on all Lagos streets, NOT just a few main streets.

You cannot be talking of megacity when you build roads for only drivers, while pedestrians are left to walk on sand, dodging open gutters.

THAT'S what we demand. Roads with sidewalks.

Thanks Alj Harem. You see some of the people who build these roads in Nigeria deserve to be flogged.

Ok, even when they build the roads well, as in the pic below, as you can see the sidewalk is just too damn narrow. It's like they just put it there for show, not to actually enable pedestrians use it, as is clearly the case in the pic above.

A sidewalk should be at least thrice the width of this thing below. It should be wide enough to hit the fences of adjoining houses, thus cutting out the sand, and not stopped midway.

Yours is just another one of the million and one things everybody and their mama think Fashola should be doing, but who is going to give Fashola money to do everything on everybody's laundry list?

Everybody want Fashola to build new schools and make the state's education system the best in the world, they want Fashola to build the best hospitals and make the state's health care system the best in the world, they want Fashola to build drainage system in every inch of Lagos state, they want Fashola build the best road and transportation system in the world, they even want Fashola to solve Nigeria's power problem.

It's just absurd what people dump on the man's lap as if he's some kind of abrakadabra magician with superior capabilities to turn one of the most crowded and infrastructure deprived and neglected societies in the world in less than for years.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to balance their thoughts with basic sense of practicalities, realities and fair judgment.
