You did good. You managed to insult a whole religion and tribe with bigotry in one post. Clap for yourself.

Am I wrong? Pork meat is widely consumed in Ghana even though there are Muslims too.

So why is Nigeria's case different? Fulanis that's why.

The only place you can find non- halal in Nigeria is among Igbo butchers.

Half of Nigeria is not Muslim so why is halal meat being pushed on the majority??

because muslims(fulani) secretly run Nigeria!

Pork meat isn't popular thanks to them.

Alot of Nigerians only realise people actually consume pigs when they leave Nigeria.

The flow of meat is controlled by Muslims.
Pork meat is still heavenly consume in the North by Non muslims. They don't need to leave nigeria. grin grin grin They just generalise from their little scope of things.

Because rearing pigs very risky.
When I see people eating pig I just imagine them chewing different strains of Influenza A Virus as pigs are mixing vessels for Infkuenza A virus.

Also perhaps because pig meat is haram. However pigs are also used for transpharming.

I feel it is due to the fact that a section of the population does not eat it. Thereby cutting down d market size when compared to other animal husbandry.
Secondly, it takes a whole lot of input and effort due to how d environment can be stinking.

The few people that are into it are really cashing out!!!
Not true Nigerians will eat anything if it is available
It does not stink as much as poultry

It is just a lack of knowledge/expertise.

Do we even farm chicken , turkey cows or goats efficiently

Pretty much all our agriculture suffers from knowledge deficit

Agricultural knowledge is very serious business and as a nation we lack that knowledge

Imagine a country like Ukraine still exporting food in the middle of war. It is not luck

It's not peculiar to piggery alone. There are many units/sections of agriculture that could have been invested in and create employment for millions of Nigerians and also generate revenue for the government and citizens.

Sadly, they don't care because they can't make the type of money they embezzle within 4 years from agriculture. So, everyone can't sacrifice his belly for the citizens that elected them.

A lot of you don't even understand job creation by government, Kemi Olunloyo is right about Nigerians

Pig farming no be beans and definitely not for the faint hearted. You must be ready and willing to commit crazy amount of money into it and more importantly, ensure the best technical hands are the one catering for the animals. Remembered how a man lost pigs worth more than 40 million because of one disease lyk dat

I think your assumption is wrong and you don't know about the pig business. It is very huge in Nigeria. The problem in recent years has been around pig mortality due swine flu epidemic. It is killing the resilience of pig farmers

There is money in pig farming. My father used pig farming to pay our school fees in those days. It was lucrative. And I think it still is.

I strongly disagree. Demand for pork meat is not low at all. I hope you know that bacon, sausage and hot dogs come from pigs.
brain54:
Piggery is very capital intensive to start up.
It is generally considered as a dirty business especially as compared with other type of animal farming.

Generally pork meat is not as widely accepted as others. Poultry or beef for instance. It is actually forbidden by Islam religion and only some Christians accept it also due to religious reasons. So the demand is low compared to beef or chicken.

Also I think to farm pigs commercially it takes a longer period to start breaking even and returns on investment. Not many are willing to take the risk involved in rearing due to the long time frame involved. It’s a long term investment.

Also outbreak of diseases ( swine flu) for instance often discourage prospective farmers. Existing farms also battle with many of these diseases while many are being shut down especially the larger ones.

Lastly lack or absence of information on piggery thereby limiting those that start up or go into piggery as a form of business.

This is not to say it is not a lucrative business however. From my little and humble experience I will say pig farming is one of the most lucrative aspects of agriculture.

The population of Muslims in Ghana is 19% compared to about 53% of Muslims in Nigeria. Compare the ratio.
I am not talking of the general population just yet.

Government should create job

Government should raise pigs..
Government should not raise pigs but government should enhance knowledge acquisition

Let me use an illustrative example

The knowledge of how to build airplanes , trains , motorcars exists in some countries and not others. They guard that knowledge jealously and pass it from one generation to the next whilst taking steps to prevent that knowledge leaking to other nations

Again let us consider maize production Nigeria produces less than 2 tonnes per hectare compared to US 11 tonnes per hectare.

These things are not accidents . It is KNOWLEDGE .
That is where government comes into it at a strategic level.

Private individuals should invest in those sector not government. Nigerians are crazy set of people, if government decides to set up stuff like this who are those who are going to run it? It's the same Nigerians the governor or president he not going to run it himself, the same Nigerians will run it to the ground then start complaining.

You pls go to an open market in Nigeria and tell them you want to buy bacon, hotdogs or sausage. I just hope they won’t give you the sausages made from baking flour.

Come back and give me your report after. Then we can talk.
