I would love the Eastern governors especially Mba to follow the way of Otti to achieve a comprehensive covered drainage on road construction.

Instead of making ditch and gutters by the sides of the roads, the contractors should rather dig a deep drainage in the middle of road at stretch then cover it with manholes at strategic points to allow run off collections, then the contractor can just build or construct a proper walkways by the sides of the roads. A win win situation for everyone...

Ugwuanyi did this at some section of the Opi-Nsukka road solidly constructed by RCC.

From that Timber road junction to Aku road junction... At the right hand side if you are coming from Ogige Market to Total Roundabout. When next you are around that area look out for openings around that shallow gutter.

I was still in Nsukka when the road was being constructed. The gutter dug was so deep with concrete pipes layed inside before it was covered and that shallow gutter constructed on top.

The ignorance about underground gutters in America or Europe is that we think they are made from concrete. Even abroad where cement is way less expensive than in Nigeria, they still cannot afford to use concrete to build gutters and then build multiple concrete slabs reinforced with steel rods to cover them. That will be insanely expensive even for the rich developed countries.

What we must do is encourage the industries that make the underground gutter pipes used abroad to begin producing such plastic underground drainage gutters here in Nigeria. So that we can encourage our road builders to start using these types of modern pre-fabricated underground gutters for any new projects. Unless we change this fundamentally by pushing for the local production of drainage gutters in Nigeria, we shall continue wasting time asking governments to spend scarce resources on building reinforced concrete slabs to ensure underground drainage gutters. I think we should do it the way it's done abroad via pre-fabricated underground plastic gutters and not using very expensive concrete for it.

large concrete pipes with a diameter of 2-3 feet is the way to go...........aside collector pits at intervals.....you can desillt with a hydro-excavacuation machine! In the US this is the way most drains are built and serviced!

Many residential sub divisions also use concrete pipes cos they last very long ...but you are right most drains are built using these corrugated plastic pipes.they are cost effective and they are far stronger than they look! I always wondered how these pipes are desilted until I saw a truck with what they called a hydro-excavation pump! I

Middle of the road? How will residents channel waste water from their homes to the gutters if the drainage is placed at the centre of the road?

There will be collection points at the walkways for such... If you've been to Abuja and seen road constructions in the central area you will understand this better.

Taa gbafuo!

You think every city in America is just like New York.

Do you know that America has thousands of cities and town? Do you know that these towns and cities also have underground gutters that aren't the sewage systems of New York? What are they built with?

Ndi ala. Mad people everywhere.
