Anfieldboss:
Hello guys,

Please I need your honest views on my proposed plan.

I am thinking of going to the UK for a self-funded PhD next year. I invested a lot in pursuing a PhD in the US this year, but unfortunately, it didn't work out. I am still trying to get myself out of that disappointment because I am fed up with my job and the country as a whole.

The thing is I am not financially robust to fund a PhD in the UK, but I am considering my options. I know many Nigerian students that are in similar financial positions as myself or even worse but have managed to self-fund themselves in the UK.

I am married with a daughter and I plan on going with my family. My wife is a teacher with Montessori and British curriculum experience. Many of her colleagues that travel abroad find it easy to get teaching jobs because of their experience. My questions are

1. Will I be able to raise my tuition fees by working part-time as a PhD student? What kind of jobs can I do as a part-time PhD student?

2. I have had a discussion with my wife and she has agreed to bear more of the financial responsibilities in the family during my period of study. How lucrative are teaching jobs in the UK and will she be able to meet up? I'll try to support when I have sorted out my tuition.

3. How much would we need as a family to move? Please I will appreciate a breakdown of the cost. I am targeting low-tuition universities for my PhD (Teeside, GCU, Salford, and Coventry).

Please I will appreciate advice from the experienced ones here.

DMainMan, I would appreciate your input sir.

1. The cost of pursuing a PhD in the UK is extremely high. Unlike in the USA and Canada, UK universities do not typically offer scholarships to international students. As a result, you would have to spend over £50,000 for your tuition fees. You will still need to consider accommodation and living expenses.
It is not advisable to pursue a PhD without a scholarship, as over 90% of PhD students in the UK are funded through scholarships.

2. A more realistic option for you is for your wife to pursue a Master's degree. I recommend encouraging her to apply for a Master's program now, which would allow you to work full-time as her dependent. It is advisable to aim for admission in September, as it is likely that dependent visas will no longer be available starting from January 2024.

3. The exact fees vary depending on factors such as the university tuition, location, and whether it is in London or outside. To get accurate information, you will need to conduct thorough research.

I strongly advise against pursuing a PhD unless you secure a full scholarship. Instead, suggest to your wife to consider pursuing a Master's in Education (MEd) or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) incorporated into the program. Teaching is in high demand in the UK, which is why certified teachers from Nigeria are currently sought after.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apply-for-qualified-teacher-status-qts-if-you-teach-outside-the-uk/routes-to-qualified-teacher-status-qts-for-teachers-and-those-with-teaching-experience-outside-the-uk

Best of luck.

Yes, but what I noticed was that, after the 2nd of May that I was turned down. I went to NIMC office to correct name, I have to be going to NIMC back and forth and even messaged them via email to VALIDATE my NIN and it was rectified last week Friday with email that the change has been effected.

I tried tracking my details on NIS portal and I realized that the NIN pending verification stuff is no more there.

But when I went to NIS office on Monday I was told that truly my NIN has been validated but it hasn't dropped, which he snapped with my phone and I also see it with my very own eyes that it has been effected at NIMC but it hasn't changed at NIS. The immigration officer at the NIS office ALAHUSA had to tell me that I need to exercise patience that it is network that hasn't make it to drop yet.

I tried tracking it again, I'm now back to square one where it's saying Pending NIN verification failed.

I'm fed up already. Going to ALAHUSA every week is truly worrisome especially now that tfare is nothing to write home about. Anyways, I've collected an officer number to be checking for me though.

That was my experience so far.

Also, try using NIMC mobile app to check if your details and changes have been effected. Ours just changed yesterday.

Good morning house. I had a name issue with my NIN which contradict my renewal of passport and I've been able rectified that at NIMC office. I went to Immigration since I've effected the change in my name for capturing but I was told my NIN is not verified. Lo and behold i tried tracking my passport and I got this message NIN Verification (Pending NIN Verification). Please house how can I Verify my NIN so that I can go for capturing.

Are you still experiencing this issue? My issue is that the red cross is no longer appearing, but it is still not ticked. Can you please confirm if the red cross is no longer visible for you as well?

it is not about value. Majority of cases are all lies. Why should they ‘value’ lies? People are trying to bring in house helps, their relations children and what not claiming them to be adopted children. It’s a sham in Nigeria and no sane country would want to be found committing crimes against children.

I feel the UK student visa process Is super expensive. For a single student you looking at 15k tuition, 10k living expenses and 5k for plane ticket and miscellaneous. Minimum 30k pounds in return for 2 year work visa where you likely to save less than 10k pounds. Am I missing something here? Just a curious mind.

There are several schools that offer tuition fees ranging from £7,500 to £11,000 after automatic discounts, particularly if you have achieved a second class upper or first class degree. To cover your living expenses, you can budget for £500 per month, with £300 for shared student accommodation that includes bills, and £200 for food and other expenses (note that you will need to cook). You can see a one-way plane ticket that costs around £500, as a ticket priced at £5,000 is considered excessively expensive.

In general, obtaining a work visa is a better option as it includes the opportunity for permanent residence for 5 years.

Pls i would to know how PTDF disburses their scholarship fund to their scholarship beneficiaries (overseas category)
for example, if i am a successful beneficiary at the end............and let's say my Tuition fee in the UK is 30,000 British Pound Sterling,

1. my question is will PTDF send the 30k British Pound Sterling directly to my UK school OR will PTDF send the 30k British Pound Sterling directly to my personal UK bank account , then i can then pay my tuition fee by myself

2. Does PTDF pays a flat rate as Tuition fees, flight fee to all beneficiary irrespective of country of study and course of study ?

1. PTDF will pay your tuition fees directly to the school. There is usually a discount offered by the listed UK schools in the scholarship portal. No flat rate. PTDF pays whatever fees in the listed UK school invoice.

2. PTDF will organise your flight but will give you stipends directly. Dont focus on all these. Try to put your energy on your scholarship application and interview.

You must obtain admission by yourself.

Thank you Boss. ... I'm about to conclude my Masters program in Environmental and Engineering Geology. I have applied for few jobs in related field and still waiting for update.

If I get sponsored by a care company which is the easiest to get at the moment. Can I combine working with the care company and a job in my field with a company that do not offer sponsorship ?

You can only an extra 20 hrs in another company if it is same profession or if the job is in the shortage occupation lists.

I think Sheffield Hallam uni, University of South Wales, Roehampton Uni, Robert Gordon Uni and Ulster University Birmingham might consider HND and Third class for direct Masters admission provided you have adequate experience in the proposed field of study.

Meanwhile only companies in the links below give sponsorship. So kindly focus on those companies. Some big companies such as Shell and Mobil do not sponsor while tiny companies with just one office can give sponsorship. So check the lists whenever you get any vacany.

Please I am a student in UK currently on Tier 4 Visa. If I have my COS and want to switch to skilled work Visa.
What requirements will I need to apply including cost?
Will I require IELTS?

Thanks.

Hi Ignis. Glad you are in the UK. I recall all those days on Nairaland.

For general information and requirements about Skilled Worker Visa
: https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa

Costs depend on whether you are in UK, outside UK or your job is on the shortage list: https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa/how-much-it-costs

For English test:
You don't need any English test since you had already demonstrated proof of English in your Student visa application. The visa application will inquire if you had previously provided evidence of English proficiency in a previous visa application. You will be asked;

Have you provided evidence of your English language ability in a previous application?
Select Yes

Hello,
Please MA employment reference letter states 20k as salary and she is also the sponsor but funds came from the spouse. Can it be an issue?

If you can tell your referee not to include salary, that will be OK. That salary is too small and it is suspicious as it may demonstrate your financial status is not genuine.

The most important thing in employment reference letter is the company name, your position, job role, duration of employment with the company and your performance.

I used "to be" to imply something planned in the future.

If I had used "will be" or "would be" then that is misrepresentation as it denotes certainty.

However, it is nice you guys pointed this out as it leads to ambiguity. Hence, I have edited it to "could be" for exactness.
