Looking for/hoping to find work in 2013? Here are 5 Changes To Make To Your Resume NOW.

Let’s be honest – nobody’s resume is perfect. And it’s difficult to know how to improve — if you ask five resume experts about the ideal resume , you’ll get five different answers. But the important thing is to make your resume as close to perfect as possible. With that in mind, here are five things you can change on your resume right now to make it as effective as possible.

1) Replace long paragraphs with short bullet points.
Recruiters read resumes in 15 to 30 seconds. Try reading yours in that short amount of time and see how far you get. By bulleting your job descriptions and shortening each sentence, you make it easier for recruiters to digest the maximum amount of information about you.

2) Start every sentence with a verb.
You want to make recruiters see you DOING the things on your resume, and in order to do that, you have to describe your ACTIONS. Starteach bullet point with an action verb (present tense for present jobs, past tense for past jobs). For example:
*. Prepare clients in selecting appropriate insurance coverage given situational needs
*. Troubleshoot issues with existing client policies and assist clients in all respects
*. Mentor new agents and provide advice and guidance using strong interpersonal skills

3) Make your formatting consistent.
Every section title (Experience, Education, Certifications, Summer of Qualifications, etc.) should be the same font size and style. Your spacing should be the same throughout.

4) Add numbers throughout.
The more things you can quantify, the more detailed picture you’ll create for recruiters. For example:
*. Executed training program for 20+ new employees and continuing education for 100 existing employees
*. Successfully obtained 15 new client companies throughout New England
*. Grew company’s Facebook page from 500 fans to 6,000 in six months

5) Be descriptive with companies and job titles.
If you worked for a company that isn’t well-known whose name doesn’t convey their line of business, add that detail onto your resume. And if your job title is confusing or vague, add some detail to that as well. Using parentheses works for both situations. For example:
*. Client Service Representative (customer service)
*. Bennett & Sam (computer software)

don't forget that after the software does its job, you have to do yours.
And here is a great resource on how to write a resume that will turn recruiter's heads...

https://www.nairaland.com/1161303/how-write-resume

As we all know Hr is not a child's play cus there are a lot of things companies look for during the hiring process:

1. a. great fit- both. in intellectuals and academia
2. someone who fits the Company Culture
3. Someone who will drive profits no matter which department you are in.

Anyway, i have found a new love and will be leaving this scene soon to garner all learned experienced into my new Hr/Recruiting venture.

Yolpe Blog » How To Write An A+ Resume

Your resume is arguably the most important document in your job search . It’s the first impression you make on any recruiter, HR professional or hiring manager. It must show off your expertise in the best way possible in order to land the opportunity (or opportunities)you desire.

If someone had to assign a letter grade to your resume, what do you think it would receive?

RezScore , a free web app, does just that. Based on recommendations of hiring managers, HR directors, job search experts, and certified resume writers, RezScore’s algorithms read your resume and analyze it on more than a dozen metrics to determine your grade.

How does one achieve an A+ resume? glassdoor spoke with one of the co-founders of RezScore, Sean Weinberg, who had some insight to share about crafting the perfect resume:

Keep it concise
According to an analysis from RezScore, the typical resume is between 386 and 896 words long, and typically fits on a single page. While longer is worse, there is no “perfect length,” although the highest scoring resumes were between 600 and 700 words.
“Oversharing is one of the biggest mistakes jobcandidates make on their resume,” said Weinberg.

Don’t use a template
Templates and tables constrain your resume, said Weinberg. “This makes formatting a time-consuming and annoying process. Instead, you should feel comfortable creating your own basic format in Word that follows a general outline.” Here’s a great layout to follow:
*. Name in large font and bolded
*. Address in smaller font – include email, one phone number, and a link to your LinkedIn profile
*. Professional headline in large font and bolded, such as “Online Advertising Sales Executive”
*. Selected accomplishments section (or go right into experience section) – maximum of five highly targeted, relevant accomplishments in bullet form
*. Experience – include the name of the company, location (city, state), job title, dates of employment, bullet point describing accomplishments/experience
*. Education
*. Skills
*. If relevant – industry affiliations, interests, and volunteer work

Show off your accomplishments
“Specify what made you a successful employeeframed in the context of particular accomplishments,” said Weinberg. “Always lead with your most significant accomplishment and give it meaningful context. i.e., if you saved the company money by renegotiating a contract, you should includeitems like dollar amount saved or turn around time reduced or increased length of term or negotiating a set currency exchange rate.” Simply put, numbers make more powerful stories.

Use active writing and specificity
The ideal resume includes adverbs and numbers. Remember that an employer does not know anything about you, so you need to show them through words why they should hire you. Using first person or passive writing makes it more difficult to write concisely, which is key to a great resume.

guy, let me tell you a story...
i used to have a girlfriend exactly like yours. but because i loved her so much and she was so different from everyday girls we do see, i stuck with her and with time, she became one of the most fun loving persons in my life. I still believed that i kinda opened a large container in her that all the fun resided. I still remember the time when she wld always wait for me or want me to do everything first and when i start to de provock, she go say "but you'r the male here!' angry

anyway with tyme all these changed and she became totally all i wanted including those characteristics your babe get and she fine no be small. these kinda stuff usually happens when you are her first guy and she trusts you so much to always lead the way and have not started going out with bad female friends way go really show am how to have plenty plenty fun. embarassed tongue

anyway am still with that girl till n0w and why i said "i used to have a girlfriend like that" is bcus she has totally changed...and today and always when i look at her, i wonder and say to myself "God dey do am 4 u ohhh!". and because am her definition of fun, she no go spoil annd change to one badt girl like that no matter the influence. SHE IS ALSO VERY VERY INTELLIGENT grin grin wink

It might seem outlandish and frail and even though not the literary section of Nl, but its pertinent that even job seekers who are the target audiences here, get a quick glimpse of the Jobs they pursue and the companies they aspire for from those who have been there before them.

So therefore,

Employees(both of large and small corporations): Share your stories of the workplace in 2012 and the years gone-by, even 2013! share your pains, joys, fulfillment, anger, hatred, sadness and what have you. Tell us what makes you strive on and continue the struggle as a worker/employee. And you know, one of the beauties of Nl is the ability to post anonymously unlike FB where your identity is known or an employer might even force you to like the company's FB page so you can't blab or rant or you are out! for good from the company.

If you don't have an idea on how to begin, this post on Nairaland might be a great resource

»… Sets up committee on job creation

The Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation Initiatives, Josephine Washma, has hinted that the Federal Government intends to conduct a census of unemployed persons in the country early 2013. Washma, who spoke to Daily Sun at an end of year dinner party, organized by the management of Premier Petroleum Company Limited, in Abuja, said the new survey, which will be carried out nationwide, will form the basis for the implementation of job creation initiatives of government.“We are embarking on a new unemployment survey, in conjunction with the National Bureau of Statistics, to update the existing data base. We believe that NBS already has the structures to ensure a successful survey,” she said. According to the Special Assistant, the issue of unemployment cannot be properly addressed without a reliable data base, adding that proper job planning requires the knowledge of the number of the unemployed.

“So until we know how many persons are unemployed, how many are skilled, the number that are unskilled and how many of them can be given training upgrade to improve their performance. “What has been done before was a general survey but we want to segment that do as to enable us to direct efforts at those areas that are of critical importance,” she added. Speaking on the renewed effort by government to tackle unemployment crisis in the country, Washma said President Jonathan has set up a standing Committee on Job Creation to chaired by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Nwogu. She said the committee which is to be inaugurated soon will drive the President’s intervention initiatives aimed at addressing joblessness among the youths in country. She said there will be a job creation musical show coming up early next year in conjunction with local and foreign entrepreneurs.“It is something we should all look up to and give a chance to see how it tries to solve the unemployment problem in the country and by extension the issue of insecurity, ” she said.

The Presidential aide said the committee will try in the interim to build on the unemployment data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and to move on to conduct unemployment surveys. She said NBS is also a member of the committee.“There are various employment generation programmes being ran by government agencies but what we need to do is to reassess such initiatives and to see if they actually, adding value or need to be restructured in certain ways to fit into the present expectations,” she said. “Let me say that the issue of unemployment has also to do with unemployable, that is the fact that a lot of our school leavers do not possess the require skills to attract employers of labour. Their were CVs that I could not present even to traders in the market. So we are engaging on consultants that will help train these school leavers on how to prepare a resume because resume is the first step to securing a job. It is your marketing/selling point because the applicant might not be physically present when his application is being discussed, ” she said
