Fast growing Nigerian fintech startup NebulaPay has emerged as one of the finalists at the Startup Istanbul Challenge 2018.

Among 60,000 startup applications from 140 countries, NebulaPay has been selected as one of the few game-changing and promising startups to compete at Startup Istanbul this October. These startups are the ones to be watched closely by the mentors, angel investors, VCs and global companies at the event.

Startup Istanbul, organised by Etohum, a startup accelerator and seed investor, is a gathering of the leading startups, Internet companies, business angels and venture capitalists from Asia and Europe. Every year, Etohum selects the most promising startups from thousands of applicants. These teams are trained and mentored for an acceleration period of 3 months. Etohum works with world class mentors, including advisors from Silicon Valley, the heart of entrepreneurship.

This year, the Startup Istanbul Challenge will hold in Turkey on 19 – 22 October 2018 and will be graced by 500 startups, 500 investors and 4000 attendees.

The event is made of networking. Every person you meet can give you inspiring ideas, valuable advices and opportunities for collaboration. You can find your investor, your mentor or the right startup to join or invest in. The only thing you need is energy and passion for entrepreneurship.

NebulaPay ( https://www.nebulapay.com/ ), powered by artificial intelligence, is a secure conversational payments service that enables users to make recurring payments for things like airtime, electricity and DStv using Facebook Messenger in their own language.

Jobs/Vacancies / What Is A Cover Letter? How To Write One. Sample Template. by jennex05(m): 7:46am On Mar 04, 2016
From my survey while communicating with job seekers on BBM, one of the most widely asked questions is : "What is a Cover Letter"?

I'll put you through on this and also show you a sample template which you can always use in applying for jobs.

According to Google, A Cover Letter is defined as "A letter sent with, and explaining the contents of, another document or a parcel of goods."

A cover letter typically accompanies each CV/resume you send out to provide additional information on why or how you are qualified for the job you are applying for.

Effective cover letters explain the reasons for your interest in the specific job in an organization and identify your most relevant skills or experiences.

Your cover letter could make the difference between obtaining a job interview and having your resume ignored, so it makes good sense to devote the necessary time and effort to writing effective cover letters.
A cover letter should complement, not duplicate, your resume. A cover letter is critical in creating a very good first impression.

Cover letters are generally one page at most in length, divided into a header, introduction, body, and closing

Below is a template/blueprint I have suggested for you in writing your cover letters:

APPLICANT ADDRESS
RECRUITER ADDRESS

SALUTATION
Dear [insert name of recruiting manager],
BODY
First paragraph: Mention the job you’re applying for and where you found the job listing.

Middle paragraphs:
Discuss your qualifications. These paragraphs should be specifically tailored to requirements posted in the job listing. You might also consider including why this specific company interested you in the first place. Limit this section to two to three paragraphs.

Final paragraph: If you are going to follow up in one to two weeks, mention a specific date. If you would prefer to leave the ball in their court, say that you look forward to discussing your qualifications further. Also provide your email address and phone number. Don’t forget to thank them for their time.

CLOSE
Best Regards,
[insert your name]

Also, below is a Sample real world Cover Letter that follows the template above:

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Stop Complaining Of Unemployment. It's Your Fault! by jennex05(m): 3:37pm On Apr 29, 2015
xTerses:
@ OP no doubt you are from a rich background.

I agree with you that company/employers have needs that needed to be attended to but how many people can afford what it takes to acquire the skills needed?

For example, someone aspiring to be a professional programmer who struggles to get just 1 meal per day, how can such afford cost of professional programming course?
Or the daring who is determined to learn programming on his/her own because he can't afford NIIT, who struggles to get a laptop, internet data bundle and now no power supply.

Its high time employers Change how they operate. Instead of looking for skills and experience, get those who have potentials and train them on how to solve your problem.

The government, rich and employers are reason why there are lots of unemployed and they try to justify themself by blaming the un-employed for not having the right skills.

Hi xTerses,
I understand your point. But let me ask you a question. When you have a plumbing fault at home, would you prefer to use an inexperienced and intelligent plumber who can learn on-the-job or an experienced one who'll fix your damn leaky pump?

If you put yourself in the shoes of many employers, you'll understand that they are more concerned with getting tasks done efficiently and effectively than job seekers' opinion on the openings in their company.

I'm not saying such job seekers are doomed, but it's a good way to look at the situation. It goes a long way in helping applicants know their stand and possibly do something different about it.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Stop Complaining Of Unemployment. It's Your Fault! by jennex05(m): 3:21pm On Apr 29, 2015
wolegzy:
I think you have a point @op but in addition to the above stated, I have observed over the year that majority of our graduates don't want to start from anywhere but the utmost top .

A lot of Nigerian graduates though not from rich backgrounds with no connections want to get out of the NYSC camp and head straight to an AC tight office and drive AC tight rides.

No company wants to employ a liability , they all want people that will add value to their organization. That is why you will see adverts for Graduate trainee requesting for 2 years post nysc experience.

Dear Nigerian graduates , it is time you realised that you should not reject any job you can lay your hand on , irrespective of the pay or work conditions- provided its matches your future goals and desired working environment.

These low paying jobs build you and add value to you and most importantly gives you the seemingly compulsory 'work experience' these companies ask for.

You are totally right.
Here's another post that buttresses this point - http://www.jobzilla.ng/2014/03/you-might-not-get-job-even-with-good.html
Jobs/Vacancies / Stop Complaining Of Unemployment. It's Your Fault! by jennex05(m): 10:05am On Apr 29, 2015
Imagine a handsome and well-to-do young man, a bachelor for that matter. He's ready and set for marriage. He embarks on a search for his better half. He's looking for a beautiful woman.
A down-to-earth woman. A peaceful, caring and loving woman. A woman who can take care of his home and children. Is that too much? Well, that's his specification and choice. He has a need and he has to fill it.

Meanwhile, there are lots of spinsters out there looking to get married. As the saying goes, there are more women than men. In fact the "spinsterhood market" is condensed.

So why can't this young man just pick one out of the many single girls out there. The reason is simple. He hasn't seen anyone that fits his spec. He doesn't care if the "spinsterhood market" is condensed. All he cares about is the right woman who can fill his needs.

Naturally, Man, unlike God is selfish.

Analogous to the above scenario is the labour market. The ratio of job seekers to employers is about an alarming 1000 : 1, if not more.
Employers don't care about the unemployed. No employers goal is to reduce unemployment rate in any country. Most times, there goal is to make money. Sorry. Man is selfish.

Every employer/company has needs. They need a good accountant who can manage their finances, They need an exceptional web developer who can manage their web site. The need an experienced Building Engineer who can manage their works and projects. Are you good, exceptional or experienced. They need to fill these needs.

Lesson: Stop complaining. You annoy me when you do. Well, i guess my emotions and opinion don't count in your life.
Quit saying there are no jobs. There are. There are things to do. People have needs. Find them, fill them. Get yourself equipped with a new skill.

Who doesn't have just a degree today? Is that all you can offer? SMH for you.

Learn a computer program. Learn how to sell a product. Learn French. Get a Masters degree or even a PHD. Learn AUTOCAD. Learn PeachTree. Sharpen your convincing skills. Go out there and learn something that will make you stand out from the crowd. You'll find employers begging to employ you.

Trust me on this. This sh*t works like charm.

I guess my opinion counts now.

Sincerely,

Jobs/Vacancies / The World Needs You. What Do You Have To Offer? by jennex05(m): 4:32pm On Mar 17, 2013
I have applied countless number of times and yet no job. In fact I'm tired of applying. The Nigerian government is not trying for graduates in this country. And many more. While chatting with some of my job seeker contacts on BBM, these are some of the comments I get from them.

Let me explain why you've found yourself in that situation. First, to make you understand better, I'll take a typical scenario which I believe most of us are conversant with; Boy-Girl relationships.

Imagine your a lonely guy who insists that women won't come near you despite the fact that he is the nicest guy in the world. I can explain what is wrong with this mindset. "Nice guy? Who gives a shit?

"What, so am I saying that you can't get girls unless you have a nice job and make lots of money?"
No, your brain jumps to that conclusion so you have an excuse to write off everyone who rejects you by thinking that they're just being shallow, materialistic and selfish.

I'm asking, what do you offer? Are you smart? Funny? Interesting? Rich? Talented? Ambitious? Creative?
Don't say that you're a nice guy -- that's the barest minimum. Pretty girls have guys being nice to them 36 times a day. Saying that you're a nice guy is like a restaurant whose only selling point is that the food doesn't make you sick.

Does that break your heart? I'm sorry.
OK, so now what? Are you going to droop your big head in shame and mope about it, or are you going to do something about it? It's up to you, but don't complain about how girls fall for jerks; they fall for those jerks because those jerks have other things they can offer.
You say: "But I'm a great listener!" Because you're willing to sit quietly in exchange for the chance to be in the proximity of a pretty girl (and spend every second imagining how soft her skin must be)? Well guess what, there's another guy in her life who also knows how to do that, and guess what again? He can play the guitar!
Can you?

Jobs/Vacancies / I'm A Job Seeker, Why Am I Not Being Called For Intervies And Aptitude Test by jennex05(m): 1:49pm On Feb 18, 2013
In the course of chatting with a lot of job seekers on BBM, I've had a good number of them lament on the fact that they've been applying for jobs for a long period of time and yet they are not being called for Interviews/Tests. This is a common experience for most job seekers.

Also, another common question from these job seekers is:
Are these jobs real? Though I make every effort to verify the authenticity of my job posts, I'm in no way affiliated to any of the companies whose vacancies I publish. However, I assure you that most of them (if not all) are authentic. My advice for you is never to pay any amount of money to any recruiter.
Let's leave that discussion for another day.

From the information I gather from job seekers on my BBM List, I've noted some of the aspects of their job search or application process where they get it all wrong.
Consequently, I'm going to list some useful points which could help you as a job seeker get called/invited in that next aptitude test/interview.

1) The Job Seeker Population in Nigeria is Overwhelming:
Every 4 months in a year, approximately 2000 NYSC Corpers pass out from each State in Nigeria.

Mathematically,
2000 Corpers x 36 States in Nigeria = 72000 Graduates
72000 Graduates + 2000 Corpers in Abuja = 74000 Graduates/4 months
Logically,
74000 x 3 = 222,000

Therefore,

Nigeria churns out 222,000 graduates into the labor market every year and this number increases every year because I'm sure it's not everyone that gets a job every year. This number is excluding job seekers who are already working but need a better job. And this is a good number of people too!

You see? You are not alone. Like I always say, it's a survival-of-the-fittest situation out there.
Consequently, you just have to be patient, improve on yourself everyday to have an edge over most other people and never relent in applying for jobs.

2) You Use a Generic CV/Cover Letter format for all Job Applications:
Never use one CV and Cover letter for all your job applications.
Don't be lazy. Stop giving excuses like, I cant edit my CV or Cover letter on my phone etc. Always find a way to draft and prepare these documents to suit every job you are applying for. Or don't you need a job?

3) Cut Your Coat According To Your Cloth:
If you are a Fresh Graduate, apply for Graduate trainee Jobs. If you have an OND, apply for such jobs. Apply for jobs that befit your current skills, qualifications and experience. Don't be greedy. Stop looking for high paying jobs that you are not qualified for. Start somewhere no matter how small. The labor market is a complex ladder, but trust me, you'll get on top someday.

I hope this helps

NYSC / What Should I Do To Get A Job After Passing Out From NYSC? by jennex05(m): 1:18pm On Feb 13, 2013
I understand the excitement that goes with passing out of service. In fact, you are so excited, you want the whole world to know. A lot of people show this by sharing their POP pictures and NYSC Certificates on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, BBM etc. You won't have to go for the CDS again, no more khaki trousers, no more of those heavy orange boots,
and for some, no more issues with your LI and so on and so forth. You just can't wait to pick your NYSC Certificate and run!. The Big question is, run to where?
The truth is, it's tougher out there in the Nigerian Labour Market. As a Corper, at least you had a monthly income. But after POP, if not retained at your work place, many of you will go incomeless (if there's a word like that) and hop into the world of job search.

The bad news is: Nobody really cares about you. It's cold and rough out there and that's not funny.
The good news? I care in my own little way. Consequently, I've compiled 7 tips to help you in this process.
