Politics / Re: "Churches/Mosques Won't Be Reopened Without Residents' Guarantee" - LASEPA by Mustay(m): 3:56pm On Nov 20, 2019
naptu2:

Here's the reason for this policy (although I think it should be #NoToReopeningWithoutComplainantsAssent.

Often times people complain to LASEPA and LASEPA goes to inspect the premises without informing the complainant. If necessary, LASEPA issues a warning to the defaulter without informing the complainant. If the defaulter continues to break the law, then LASEPA seals the premises.

However, after a period of time, if the defaulter takes steps to comply with the law, for example, removing the offending loudspeakers and signing an undertaking that he won't break the law, then LASEPA might reopen the premises. Some defaulters wait a few months and then start to break the law again.

This practice makes a lot of people to believe that LASEPA is not effective. I have spoken to a lot of people who believe that LASEPA does not respond to their complaints. This is because LASEPA has not carried them along and informed them of the actions that they are taking.

This is an attempt to keep the stakeholders, i.e. the residents that are complaining, in the loop.

Although, like I said, I believe that they should seek feedback from the complainant, not the residents' association.

Here's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. This woman was persistent, but not many people are as persistent.

She reported a church to LASEPA. They came and inspected the church, but they did not tell her the result of their inspection. The church continued to disturb the neighbourhood. She made many more reports, but nothing changed. Then she took matters into her own hands. She went to complain directly at the church, but they then used her as a prayer point. She documented all the actions that she had taken and sent them to LASEPA.

Finally, one day, the church announced that they were changing the venue of their midnight services because someone kept reporting them to LASEPA.

https://www.nairaland.com/5170712/woman-reports-noisy-church-lasepa#78125208

We have a serious problem with our way of thinking and this is where LASEPA and any info agency can start appealing to the minds of Lagosians because those who make the noise don't know how it affects others. Some people have died, others can't sleep and we have those who have hearing loss. And we wonder why there are many aggressive people in Lagos. People are channeling their grievances to others. Anyway that's an aside.

For your example, that's what is expected. I have monitored shows where LASEPA officials come on air and the consensus is the same when they bring this issue up - 90% of the people don't feel they do anything concrete. Normally, people should be able to follow up online or through text services. Online, people can submit evidences with timestamp of the incidence. Not everything Twitter.

My problem with the hashtag is that we are interpreting the law to give permission and this is why they say presence of laws is not our problem, absence of enforcement is. Let them include this clause in the law because you and I know that there are vested interests everywhere so saying you need an assent is a loophole. The resident can be bribed to shut up. After all, it's this same Lagos unapproved buildings get built and some officials will act like superman when it collapses and kills people. What if the complainant dies? Reporting is even people helping them do their jobs - offence that they ought to be using to make money from. If you are a repeat offender, they increase the fine you pay for violating the law and 3rd offence or more can lead to closure or suspension of licence or whatever. Man must chop, when you deny them the avenue to enjoy, they will comply.
Politics / Re: "Churches/Mosques Won't Be Reopened Without Residents' Guarantee" - LASEPA by Mustay(m): 1:05am On Nov 20, 2019
A guarantee by the residents does not make sense, just enforce the law. What if residents want the road to be blocked for a party? Will they relax the law on that? It only takes a few bucks to influence the residents association for a business that thrives on noise. What if most of the residents belong to a religion whose house makes noise, does that mean the few have no say? Who thought of this #NoToReopeningWithoutResidentsAssent

Nigerians and comparison. Adenuga and dangote are not the same people. Dangote is naturally open while adenuga is a recluse. None of these xtics are good or bad, its just based on who you are. And u can't be successful if you're not urself.

Also an obas burial is not 'everywhere'. You don't know how close he was to oba oniru or if the man helped him get his refinery land. Adenuga does not even miss any of Awujales important events in Ogun state. Dont get things twisted just because ur seeing all these young ebuka & banky at the same event. Many important lagos families will be at the burial, not only the Dangotes.
Thank you. I was going to respond but you saved the stress. People you don't know personally, some people just want to make conclusions from few public pictures. It's not all event that ends up in public space and these guys have personality differences so to make a conclusion that someone is rich and bored beats me. Very soon, Gbaja will be said to be less busy for attending.

Crime / Re: RAPE: FAQ On Nairaland Since The COZA Saga by Mustay(m): 1:07am On Oct 13, 2019
queenitee:
I'm telling you, people saying why don't they speak up then, I pray you never experience it. Rape most times is from people you love so much, people you trust so much. It would be hard for you to believe they actually did that to you, so tell me how the he.ll do you tell, explain or narrate to others what you find so difficult to believe yourself, what seems like a dream to you, what feels, I can't explain the feeling, all I know is even if it takes 50 years for you to be able to stand up to your victim, it is still rape and that 50 years is your now, it's the right time.

And who would people say a 17 years old is old enough or nonsense? So far she never said yes to the sex, so far she never gave her consent, even if she's 50 years old, it's still rape.

And the fact that she waited for him to bring a drink and share it with her or something, you people don't know the emotional and mental trauma that follows rape, you don't. And that it happened many times, you still don't know, you don't know how a rapist is capable of toying with your emotions, making you feel no good, spoiling your self esteem, you just don't know.

And that she could have told a family member, you don't know how a rapist will manipulate you to thinking telling your family member will not belive and hate you and yes that's true. Most parents are insensitive, they really are. If not, a kid that's always cheerful on seeing an individual or always wanting to be with the person suddenly becomes isolated from the individual and never wants to be around the individual, wants to be alone instead of being with the individual and you dismiss it as a childish behaviour or childish rebel, you simply don't know what's up, most times it's not

And saying she's married and so she should keep quiet, you don't know how the psychological effect of the rape is affecting her marriage, you don't know how it's affecting relationships, you don't know. Forget the smiles and all, you really don't know.

You don't know how it hurts seeing your rapist move on with his/her life and living fine while you carry the hurt and trauma all along, while they are the reason why certain things are never the same in your life, You don't know.

Yes, you don't know the everlasting effect rape has on an individual psychologically. It's true that if you've never been in someone's shoe, never say you know where it hurts, because you don't and you can never do.

There are just some hurts we don't speak about, some hurts that's difficult to speak about and if someone eventually find the courage to speak about it, we just have to encourage them because they will never go away until we have spoken about it.

I am glad the mods didn't rush this topic to the FP because the noisemakers will drown the message.

This post of yours is reminiscent of the Catholic Priests Abuse. The pain hardly goes away and the victims want to voice out. What it shows is how powerful people in positions of authority gang up to perpetuate evil. In Nigeria, what we fail to do is to tackle the issue by thinking it's about our faith, our brothers or sisters or some family members. We want to defend evil or sweep it under the carpet. It shows that a lot of people don't know the effects of something until they experience it.
This issue is not limited to Nigeria. It is all over the world and takes place in different ways and institutions.

I'm anti-rape and I support Busola Dakolo. But I don't like the way this thing has turned to a social media circus. Everyone is just jumping on it to trend.

A lot of people just jumped into this stuff because their favourite celebrities and social media influencers are involved. Not because they care so much about rape or Busola Dakolo.

What is right is right even if no one is doing it. What is wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Stand out from the crowd and pursue what you believe in - you don't need a herd to endorse your convictions because after the trend and noise dies, one thing will stand out, your consistency.

Get to know God personally. Not religion.

Faith is not a bad idea but in dealing with depressed people, it can further complicate issues because they keep asking "why" and when they realise how the world is not perfect, it further heightens their anxiety. Religion can provide solace in the hopeful verses but you have to understand the mindset of the individual.

Normal Nigerian way is to go spiritual but this person definitely has something that keeps coming up. Something that needs to be discussed or confronted. Something that needs diagnosis to get to the root. He or she keeps deflecting the attention away via photography, drugs, girlfriend etc but the devil is still wearing Prada within. Life events have not helped either in soothing the OP's pains.

This should be coming from @NigeriaGov not from Bashir. Instead, what I see is the government of Nigeria retweeting a Presidential Order from Bashir.

Now, we have Bashir, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu. A government pronouncement should not be coming through this channel. The individual can state it but the individual is not the office. The earlier they coordinate this, the better.

Footballers have a very short career that they have to make the most of it.

“Probably we would have demanded (not for any payment of some sort) but to have created a system or an institution that will take care of us in old age which is something we have found out now”, he added.

The government should create a system that works for everyone, whether you are a footballer or pepper seller. This government, through the NFF that has abandoned injured players during their active years will now take care when they're old, e no fit work. They don't care until they see foreigners hyping or showing them love, then they want to tap into the limelight.

ANAN believes that professional accounting is solely for accountants or accounting graduates, they don't believe it's an all comers affair. That's why their admission process is more rigid than ICAN's. In today's world, I don't think that matters. A lot of science graduates have become Chartered Accountants and they come with a different mindset that helps the profession rather than having one way traffic.

Whatever works for each body is okay but I believe in making education easily accessible not unnecessarily restrictive. Today, some guys are trying to put some courses like calculus online and making sure it's accredited to solve the 'expensive' maths problem.

It may seem trivial but singing the song of one of them will be seen as patronizing and keeps widening the division. This particular Ooni likes tourism and keeps telling people about African culture. No one can force them but P2 has the potential of being headliners for the twins festival held in Igbo-ora; that's tourism potential. How do you do that when the duo is not united?

Exactly. Someone raped will feel so dirty, they want to wash every remembrance of the rapist off them. It's easier said than done in reality and the Police should change their officer's orientation in addressing rape cases.

Very smart suggestion. That's what I would have thought too. A long time problem cannot be solved with force, it takes strategy and gradual phasing out. Budget for them to provide auxiliary services while ensuring that the citizens who engage them desist from this act. The refusal to see these guys as agents of change is sad but as someone said, it may be a politician who wants to clear road.
Politics / Re: LAWMA Begins Seizure Of Carts From Cart Pushers by Mustay(m): 7:45pm On Sep 03, 2019
Good observation.

Please don't push them from carts to drugs or other crimes. Our government officials sometimes don't plan alternatives when they make decisions. They forget that every action has a reaction. To the cart guy, he will see government as frustrating him without understanding what he has done or the impact. They ought to channel their energy towards another venture. We already have high level unemployment, these guys can be engaged in other productive ways.

Has the government asked why people are patronizing them? If there is no demand, they would not be doing this. This Lagos that some people want free PSP service but don't want to pay for it. The last government created a mess with waste management so I don't expect the problem to go away overnight. All the cart pusher sees is service he is providing, he does not think about the impact on the environment which is because the people themselves patronize them while the govt too has not blocked avenues for the cart guys dumping the waste anyhow. Treat these 2 and they will naturally find alternatives.

amaks:
These carts and cart pushers also help transport peoples goods to their homes in inaccessible areas, areas where vehicles and motorcycles can't enter. This action is only solving one problem while creating five more. There are smarter ways to solve the problem while maintaining jobs and customer convinience. And arrest any culprit both the trash owner contracting them and the pushers. They use these carts mainly for sale of water and transport of goods. All which are part of government responsibility to provide solutions to these problems for the paying public. Except I suspect the government has another motive in mind for this seizing actions. Discouraging and crippling the business of a targeted set of people who come majorly from a particular region. This isn't fair or proper. They are providing a legitimate service used by lot's of lagosians. Making life easier for everyone. Except the government is ready to provide the solutions to these problems, they should leave those guys alone. And this isn't the first time Lagos State Government is targeting businesses predominantly owned by people of other regions, ibos have felt and know this sort of attack by government better too. It is their business areas and locations that are always targeted first for "reconstruction" by government. And thereby displacing them, and introducing new scheme to take away the ownership from them. E.g some locations in oshodi, computer village in ikeja, car parts market of ladipo,.... some attempted moves by government didn't succeed. Southwest lagosians should get industrious too if they want to succeed. Lagos, as a former capital of Nigeria, is already a cosmopolitan city and economic hub, you can't change that, you can't stop other people from coming and thriving. New York won't be what it is today without people and work and businesses from all over the world.

Ugwuanyi recently gave to the police not fewer than 70 Hilux vehicles, Sienna SUVs and other brands for decoy operations. He as well pays monthly allowances to the operatives, provides fuel and other logistics requirements for the agencies to perform.

Worthy of note is that the governor himself sometimes leads patrol raids on criminal hideouts and dark spots at Obiagu Road, Ogui and Asata, notable homes for drug dealers and users as well as other criminals.

I don't think this is wise for the Governor to do. He is the Cheif Security Officer but the Police can do the job. He does not need Superman moves that could cost him his live.

It is so sad that Makinde paying on the 25th is now seen as a good thing to be celebrated. Salary that the workers are entitled to should not be celebrated. Our governors have done so bad that what Oyo government is doing is linked to performance.
