Business / Why Do Nigerian Businesses Get Customer Service So Wrong? by okonja(m): 6:16pm On Sep 13, 2023
Customer service is a critical factor in the success of any business. However, in Nigeria, a higher percentage of businesses have poor customer service. This can be attributed to a number of factors, including:

Lack of training: Many businesses do not provide adequate training for their customer service agents. This can lead to agents who are not equipped to handle customer inquiries or complaints effectively.

Unmotivated employees: Customer service can be a demanding job, and it can be difficult to keep employees motivated. This can lead to agents who are not engaged in their work and who are not interested in providing good customer service.

Poor company culture: A company culture that does not value customer service will inevitably lead to poor customer service. This is because employees will not be motivated to provide good service if they do not feel that their company values it.

Lack of competition: In some industries, there is little competition, which gives businesses less incentive to provide good customer service.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this issue. What do you think are the main reasons for poor customer service in Nigeria?

What can businesses do to improve their customer service?

hspda:
My experience with you guys wasn't palatable right from your service to CS.

A higher percentage of Nigerian businesses are primitive and lack communication etiquette, hence the reason why their customer service is always in shit.

Starting from an agent lacking compassion and empathy, the way you would be spoken to is always obvious that communication skill is amiss. And this can be corrected even without customer service skills but proper training on how to attend to customer, using the right verbiage and auditing their calls which will put them on their toes to be a good ambassador of the company.

MY VERSION cheesy

Rewritten:

Many Nigerian businesses have poor customer service skills. This is due to a lack of communication etiquette and compassion from customer service agents. However, this can be improved with proper training. Agents should be taught how to communicate effectively with customers, using the right words and phrases. They should also be audited to ensure that they are providing good service. This will help them to be better ambassadors for their companies.

Is the task/work a promising and continuous one?,

Can it be affected by changes in government decisions?

Can the N6m be x4 in 4 years?...

Moving abroad is an investment that is worth it in the end,] however, one needs all information and research to thrive well. Without research, one would just enter and be running the same circle similar to Nigeria but would be making little money to live and nothing more.

The problem with us Nigerians moving abroad is that we want to achieve samething we had over the years in Nigeria within 1 year moving abroad without putting in much effort as we have done over the years in Nigeria. This can be attributed to the lack of community culture among Nigerians abroad. There's no love amongst us abroad. Everyone hoards updates because they want to be better than each other.

The Indian and the Pakistani community are so big because they help each other to settle in well no matter how long it takes. They will advise each other on the processes to grow together. They dominated the local cab operators sector and you can see the evidence during Eid prayers OR major football matches in your respective city, you will hardly get a taxi to go anywhere during this time. cheesy

The West is an organized environment with a list of things to do to achieve a height of choice. There is assurance of prosperity but it takes time, while in Naija, there's no assurance, government policy might favour what you do or not. So why waste funds in business that there is no assurance when I can just move abroad and follow the process to start over? angry

For Japa, there are 2 key challenges, cost of living and type of job.

Living

You can't be coming to Nigeria on loan and decide to stay in Maitama Abuja or Lekki Ajah in Lagos, you will suffer and regret coming. There are places like Ibadan, Osogbo, Ekiti, Niger, Jos, and Ilorin with low cost of living that you can stay without spending a fortune compare to the highbrow city.

The same is for the UK. You can't come to the UK and go stay in High brow cities without crying/suffering if you aren't financially sufficient. You need to have at least funds that will take care of you for 6 months at hand while looking for a job BECAUSE you can't just land and get a job immediately unless it's a job that brought you in. You need a "National Insurance"(NI) number that takes at least a month to be delivered to your house (that's if you have gotten one grin). After the NI, you need to have UK experience before you can be considered for some roles. Work around to this is starting from the lowest ladder.

Work
You can start by asking, what do I want to do when I get there? There are 2 ways, Formal or Informal. Pick one and discover which sector you want to work in.

There are several sectors are available;
The healthcare sector:- is the biggest in the UK, so you can start from the least level and do a course every 6 months to grow up to the next ladder. The minimum wage is £9.50/h and there are jobs that pay as well as £35 to £50 per hour but you need to have acquired skills to some level and earn certificates to be able to apply for such a job.

Construction Sector:- The least requirement is a CSCS card to get a labourer job for £15 - £20 per hour, there are 6 other certificates which you can do gradually as you grow to become a site manager, you can learn on the path. You can follow this Twitter user for more info on the UK construction sector.

Tech Sector:- This is very broad and you have to look at the one easier for you to start learning. I enrolled for the Data Analytics Bootcamp in January 2023, Finished in March and got a job in April 2023, after putting in extra effort to study more apart from what they taught us at the BootCamp. Just look at other tech skills and read the requirements to pick the one of choice

I wish I can do a podcast on this...there's a lot I can say and you will agree with me that Japa is an investment that is worth it in the end.

Above is my own version grin, Below is AI's revision of my own version cheesy....AI will not take your job but will make it easier if you know how to use it.

Nigerians who move abroad often expect to achieve the same level of success they had in Nigeria within a short period of time. However, this is unrealistic, as there are many challenges to overcome when moving to a new country.

One of the biggest challenges is the lack of a strong community among Nigerians abroad. Unlike other immigrant groups, such as Indians and Pakistanis, Nigerians tend to be more isolated and competitive. This can make it difficult to find support and advice when needed.

Another challenge is the high cost of living in many Western countries. This can be a major financial burden, especially if you are not working or have a low-paying job. It is important to have a financial plan in place before you move abroad, and to make sure you have enough money to support yourself for at least several months.

Finally, it can be difficult to find a job in a new country, especially if you do not have the required skills or experience. You may need to start at a low-level position and work your way up. It is also important to be willing to learn new skills and adapt to the local culture.

Despite the challenges, moving abroad can be a rewarding experience. It can offer you new opportunities for education, employment, and personal growth. However, it is important to be realistic about the challenges involved and to plan accordingly.

Here are some specific tips for Nigerians moving to the UK:

Do your research and make sure you understand the visa requirements and other immigration rules.
Start saving money as early as possible to cover your living expenses.
Network with other Nigerians in the UK to get advice and support.
Be prepared to start at a low-level job and work your way up.
Be willing to learn new skills and adapt to the local culture.
Moving abroad can be a big challenge, but it can also be a great opportunity. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of success.

I hope this is helpful

This demotions is just for the media, I've been in the system for long I know how all of these will end.

It’s exist but only those who have the idea does, furthermore, judicial system in Nigeria only favours few, so most are discouraged in embarking on that path.

Living off loans is very risky.. say you are an IT guy with $3,307 to $7000 paycheck after fed and state tax, your Credit score is 700.

If you pay $2000 rent, car insurance, phone and other bills .. how then will you comfortably save to have a 350k hotel in Nigeria, with hostels here and there
.

Why will you stay in the highbrow areas of the city to be spending that much on rent when you can stay where's cheap and continue your WFH quietly.

For example, “You can't be coming to Nigeria as a first-timer without much budget and decide to go stay in Lagos/Abuja when there's Osun and Niger state with low cost of living.”

I live in the UK and what I pay in rent for a 3-bedroom flat where I stay won't get me a room in a shared apartment in London. It's all about planning and discipline with finances.

Furthermore, I don't say that some of them might be into a scam to meet up with their frivolous lifestyle but if he's into IT, the chances of making good earnings are higher coupled with the western world enabling environment will make you look like a ritualist to the public.

Really, if they offer similar service to AiCore then that is a good one

Thank you

What matter most is getting the hands-on experience and a placement at the end of the course. There are testimonies from previous cohorts that went through the same training process and have landed themselves a good paying jobs that comes with sponsorship.

I got an offer for an extensive UK Bootcamp starting this february but its high as much as 6500GBP. Next Cohort is May.
Maybe i continue with care job and get some money and stability before enrolling in May

They really do value that you have their UK experience

Thanks bro

Why pay that high for Data Analytics when High Impact Career is there for you. It’s £600 for 10 weeks but subsidized for Nigerians and Africans at large to a price of N200k or it’s equivalent.

This care work talk is really a thing for consideration.

I need advise actually

My wife and I both got admission to the same school, while my wife is studying, I deferred mine ( Applied data science) to October

Currently about to start care work next month, no talk of sponsorship yet.

My goal is to be a data analyst/scientist starting from an entry-level role, I have some certifications and projects completed but the jobs are not coming.
I am applying on LinkedIn but only got a few calls back.

Should I go for studies after my wife completes hers or keep looking for that entry-level role which I am not sure will come with visa sponsorship?

This is the reality of what's happening here, get ready to start from the ground zero and have a solid foundation. You will get the entry role BUT you need to go through bootcamps that will land you an automatic internship after completion which will give you the so much-requested "UK Experience" when applying for jobs.

1. Start the care/support worker job first and don't worry about sponsorship now.

What I have observed in the short period of reaching here is that if they don't give, they will let it be known to you outrightly from the start, if they don't say anything, they most likely give but will observe you first before letting you know. However, it's mostly 4 months to the end of your BRP deadline.

While doing the job and making money, you will find time to be studying for data analyst skills, since it's online.

2. Then practice well to be good at the data analyst role to get you ready for an interview for the data analyst job.

You going to school after your wife is waste of funds + time in my own view. She too can start applying for the same care/support worker job as well.

Visa Alert!!!
Family of 5

Application 5th of August

Biometric 16th August (Dependants did walk-in on this day)

All Moved to VAC 16th August

On the 7th September, Paid Call was made using Skype and Chipper cash virtual usd card, decision was made for all

MA received collection mail on 16 September

3rd Child received collection mail on 17th September

Husband received collection mail on 18th September

2nd Child received collection mail on 19th September

On the 20th, another paid call was made again and the agent confirmed well that the remaining application’s decision was made sale day with the others.

I started getting worried

On the 23rd, I went to British Embassy to complain, they noted it down,

I said this isn’t normal, at this point, the battle isn’t for the eye alone.

Started fasting and serious prayers, and on the 25th, the last application moved to VAC in the morning and before evening, 1st Child collection mail was received

Picked it up on the 26th September

@dduchess, Thank you for your support. I have been following silently for a while. I wish everyone the best.

Meanwhile, I have more questions

1. The last passport collected, the BRP letter didn’t come with it like the others and nothing in the mail yet till this moment, should we be worried about this?

2. Will transit visa be needed flying with Lufthansa airline?

Thanks.
