and they have not been replaced by the other divide so why not join the reigning crew instead of pitching tents with the crew that are not part of the decision makers in the country.

i will rather wait 3 years at home to get into a russell group school than go elsewhere. the rewards are unlimited home & away. i like to be treated as the main priority not some second fiddle.

who said manchester uni isn't a good school? i went to manchester uni myself & it's one of the 24 schools in the russell-group. are we on the same page here?

manchester uni is a top top school

a chemical engineering graduate from imperial college with the same grade would beat the cranfield graduate to the job 9 out of 10 times. forget story - the class system exists here. check the endowments given to each school by the government & the trust funds then maybe you would understand.

imperial college got £765m as far back as 2012 while coventry got £1.5m - of course, the employers know the students of imperial are well funded to carry out research while coventry students can only watch on DVDs in the classrooms.

i take it that you have not been to nigeria in https://www.nairaland.com/863688/nigerian-students-uk-how-survive/51#20037762the

last 3 years. times have changed!

@coogar pls stop being biased because u think u went to a "top top university" a uni dat not even in the top 20. I went to Essex uni which is in same category with Manchester in terms of ranking. There's nothing special about ur Russell group uni, I have friends that went to even Greenwich and they've got good jobs. Mr Russell group.....lol

make sure you do well in the interview for KCL. it's a good school that will help your career opportunities in the next 4 years. your choices should be limited to the 24 universities(russell group) - which KCL belongs to. any other school is a waste of your time, money & perhaps gambling with your future.

essex university? a swamp of piss. just for the record, how many nobel-prize winners has your school produced? compare to university of manchester & get back to me.

essex uni? i will rather go to offa polytechnic. grin your total endowment is less than £6m, manchester uni is in the excess of £160m. in which world would you rank essex uni over manchester uni?

it's funny innit - manchester university has produced 25 nobel prize winners. that's 3 times the number of the whole african continent has produced. the laboratory lord rutherford conceived the idea of the chemistry of radioactive substances is still there. - you should take an excursion to see it live with your eyes.

notable names like john dalton(founder of the modern atomic theory), niels bohr, etc all went to manchester university & you are comparing it to a village school like essex university. you must be having a laugh!!!!

internationally friendly in terms of ...?

I don't think any bank specifically make any products to target international students, some are however very reluctant to
open bank account to new residents

What's with the hype about this Russell group hype biko?

I worked in a Financial Institution before i left Nigeria to study in the UK study and i was fortunate enough to sample opinions from 2 of my directors (who happened to school in the UK) on my choice of Uni here in the UK.

I got offers from Surrey, Essex, Leeds, Kent and Aberdeen.... when i brought up the Russell group argument; Both of them waved it away immediately.... "Who cares if you have a degree from an Elite school if it's not reflecting on your performance" was their curt response.

If you got a certificate from Durham and you can't prove your mettle at the interviews; sorry is your name oh!! a Sunderland degree holder will clinch the job if he does better than you.
I ended up choosing a Uni thats not in the Russell group and is yet ranked higher that 70% of the so called Russell group....

I don't regret it one bit now... With bi-monthly CFA classes and Bloomberg tutorials....i'm waiting to see how a Uni Manchester grad will outshine me... i'm just waiting to see really!!!

your directors were being economical with the truth with you & like a black man that you are, you swallowed their words. "who cares if you have a degree from an elite school if it's not reflecting in your performance"

what if his degree reflects in his performance, do you stand a chance? no, you don't. your directors are basically saying the only way you have a chance against a degree holder from an elite school is if he's a complete dullard. if he's equally brilliant as you, you don't stand a chance.

read between the lines & stop feeding on dud comparisons. a uni manchester grad does not even need CFA classes or bloomberg tutorials to get into investment banks or other leading financial institutions in the city. their first degree is enough to get them through.

735i, you are behind the curve!!!
Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by abbakacici: 3:31pm On Dec 08, 2013
my nephew, cousin and friend graduated last year from Hertfordshire, Aston and Bath respectively, and you know one funny thing is that my nephew for Hertfordshire get a job with green impact with starting salary of about 22,000 pounds which i know is not good, he don't take the job he want back to naija and he is now working with NDIC, and my cousin for Aston although higher ranking than hertfordshire he can only get a job with starting salary of 18,000. because the salary is too low for him, he want back to nigeria he is working with GTB but my friend for bath is still looking for a job, for in your defence he has being to like 9 interviews in just 2 months, so the only good thing that is that russel degree with get you an interview. i don't think russel group or ivy-league matter to nigerian employee for example last there are about 22,000 nigerian in the uk and about 9,000 in the isa, let assume 3,000 nigerian grad uk and 1,000 for Usa going back to nigeria last year and 10% are from russel group and ivy that just 300 and 100. and do you know that last almost 280,000 grad finish nysc. what is the chance that all the 300 russel graduate will apply for the same job because an average nigerian employee get like 500 application for a job opening

You can argue like children about different universities but you are missing an important fact.
It is not just the name! Different universities have their reputation on certain SUBJECTS!
Even Oxford and Cambridge are known to specialise in ceartain topics.
So check the subject and then cross reference with Universities to see reputation.
Mind you if you are studying silly subjects like I.T. or Media Studies it does not matter where you go.

why should a manchester grad need CFA To get into investment bank? he doesn't - his reputation alone will get him there. once he gets there & he decides to upgrade himself then it can be a requirement.

however, for UEL grads like yourself, you need all sorts to polish your UEL certificate otherwise, your CV would be used to wipe spilled ketchup on the table. check the statistics, check the who is who in FTSE companies, majority of them are from the russell-group schools.

so i reiterate, you are behind the curve.

it's true na.
don't let anyone confuse you - russell group schools are your best bet. take loans if you cannot afford to get into one, the rewards in the end is limitless....

now this is the last report from equal approach in october.....

Research has revealed that top industry positions in FTSE 100 companies are dominated by Russell Group graduates, especially from Oxford and Cambridge.

A study has been released by Equal Approach, a pressure group concentrating on addressing diversity in the work place. The report made discoveries about the progression Russell Group students have made in the working world.

The report called Class Ceiling found that over half of board rooms in FTSE 100 companies had Russell Group graduates. 52.6% of graduates from the prestigious 24 were part of the boardrooms in these top UK companies.
