My issue with Kendrick Lamar, which I earlier stated is that he has deliberately used the image of darker black women in his album artwork and videos, to make a political statement , whilst being with a woman who, clearly appears more racially ambiguous than the majority of black women, and certainly is not the kind of woman he raps on in ‘the blacker the berry’.

- Promoting black power and repeatedly using the images of black women with darker skin and fuller features to assert a point, whilst being with a woman whose image contradicts that, just seems calculating and disingenuous. Besides, Kendrick was with this girl all the while before he developed his brand; he might actually believe in it however, I do not expect him to mortgage his love for his stand. Neither do I expect him to dump her and pick a poster 'black' girl for acceptance (That would make him terrible IMHO)

It is a known fact that Nigerians like light skinned people better (males & females) and we see them as finer (IMHO true) than the average dark skinned person. 'You are looking fairer' is a compliment (Until it gets to bleaching) while 'you are looking darker' is associated with suffering, illness or seen as a 'discompliment'.

And I cannot relate the AA's struggles with ours as Nigerians. Nobody would castigate a 'black' man for marrying a 'light skinned' woman; maybe Yoruba & Hausa, Christian and Muslims etc. We have our divides and it is absolutely not along skin colour or type of hair. It would do good to separate the two and not rope all into 'black' during discussions.

The way ÁA women complain about 'black' men marrying 'whites' or 'light skinned ones' is also the same way AA women and even Nigerian on NL (Never seen one in real life except on religious reasons) are castigated for using extensions and straightening their hair. It is surely a two way thingy.
