How Do We Effectively Curb Sexual Offences In Nigeria? by Nobody: 3:02pm On Aug 01, 2015

I feel that I finally need to speak up since I now know that merely creating threads, pointing fingers and name-calling will no longer suffice. I am plain fed up with the hundreds of Rape cases being published in my country.
How do these cases end?
We even hear of pastors and elderly men begging the parents of the victim to withdraw their case against an offender who raped their child. And victims being shamed and blamed and at the end of the day, the rapist could relocate and commit the same offence all over again. Then some men now say that 9year old girls seduce them and witches push them to rape. So pathetic and shameful.

Okay, you may feel that it doesn't concern you but then what goes around comes around, and one day, it will finally concern you, directly or indirectly.

So, my question is.. What is the most viable way to curb sexual offences, rape and abuse of any form; against women, men, girls, boys and helpless children especially.

Do we begin to publish names and pictures of CONVICTED sexual offenders and paste them in public places?

Do we start a publication, blog, website where we put up the details of every sexual offence plus details of the rapists, then send the link to everyone we know?

Do we solicit any of our dailies to help publish these notices profiling sexual offenders and their addresses?

What do we do?

P.S: Pls, let us not talk about the NPF, or prison sentences or even any sort of law put in place that never favours the poor or the voiceless masses. Think about the physical and psychological effect on these helpless children subjected to rape by adults who later bribe their way out.

I plead that if you have links to dailies or ideas on things that can be done to proffer an effective and lasting solution to this evil debacle that has befallen our society, kindly let us know.
It is my belief that when a rapist sees his picture and name in public, it will stop him from committing the same offence again, and also serve as a deterrent to others who plan on abusing anyone in the future.

Disclaimer: My post do not cover those who were/are/will be wrongly accused of a crime they know nothing about. And only CONVICTED rapists should be exposed and punished.

Thank you.
Pls, send me a PM if you do not want to comment on this thread.
Looking forward to positive and lasting solutions.

Lost innocence: Why girls are having rough sex at 12.

[b]Suggestions By Nairalanders:::

1. First of all, a national reorientation/awareness to
change people's perception of rape! Most people don't
see it as a big deal and the rest just want to keep it hush
hush cos of the stigma & guilt that follows the victim

2. Create a National database for "Convicted" sex offenders that can be accessed by Schools & any employer of labour

3. There should be a law requiring Sex offenders to inform
neighbours & Community leaders of their status

4. Stiffer Penalty for the crime & for crying wolf!

5. Police officers (many female ones) and other victim support professionals have to be trained to encourage victims to come forward. No need to be ashamed.

6. Anonymity for victims (with measures to guard against
spurious & malicious accusations). Stiff penalty for false
accusation.

7. Many people in Nigeria are careless with their children - they need to be a lot more vigilant. Why do strange people have access to their children? Why are the parents not around? Why are so many people having children that they cannot care for?Sadly it is often the parents who are the indirect facilitators of abuse by way of their neglect.

8. Sex education is a must. If we, as parents, don't teach our children about sex they will learn it from other sources. Namely; friends, TV and porn. None of these three sources are ideal. TV distorts what relationships are really like, and creates false expectations. Porn also creates expectations, ideals and attitudes that are counter productive to healthy relationships.

9. Women have changed. Laws have changed. But the
education given to the male child hasn't been attacked
with as much severity as the first two. Men are predators,
true. They are hunters, true again. But they do not have to
be sociopaths. Shift the awareness of how inhumane rape
is to the men for once. Spend twice as much time as has
been spent teaching women to be decent, and focus on
getting the disgusting act of rape from the men.
Also, if there's the possibility of having an executive arm
of the police handle crimes of this nature (if it doesn't
already exist) that will be superb.

10. Positive messages displayed on T-shirts…

b) Public campaign across the nation by NL volunteers
Dedicated NL volunteer team (Investigators, counsellors and lawyers) willing to respond to reported cases within a short period of time.

c) Free banners permanently displayed on NL linked to a
dedicated thread with information on how to go about reporting such incidents.

d) NL University students encouraged to act as ambassadors in helping to curtail the evil menace by actively engaging in educating their peers.

I know you are in Nigeria so explain how these laws will help those that don't have the money nor the voice to get justice?

We know that even the toddlers and 3yrs old who get raped were not decent. We know, okay.
The question is what do you think should be done to sexual offenders so that they won't repeat the crime and will also serve as a deterrent to others.
Any ideas?

Sample... Sample and sample...

A simple case was the issue of marriage or sexual consent whereby senator anyanwu put forward a notion and even so called lawyers argue about it and misinterpreting it to mean something all for the sake of scoring cheap political points...

Simple.... Rape....... 35yrs imprisonment... Parole option after 20yrs...

Make the layman on the street know what an action attracts and the penalty { no one wants to spend the best part of his life behind bars}

And this can be achieved once corruption and the police force has been reorganized

If decency from the female pack is in tact, the rate of rape or sexual offences will reduce. Hence no need for this discussion... You get the idea?

Come to think of it... The SEX OFFENDER list works great all over the world..

By the time you are unemployable and stigmatize for your past deeds... Then any other person will avoid it..

Create a Web database of it..

Your landlord check it before renting out a house...

Employers check it.. Etc

Living hell of a life for a sex offender tongue

Yes oh. We are working on producing pampers that will cover female children from head to toe so that they can also be decent, and we will also be covering our teenagers with Rafia leaves so that rapists won't see them. Our little boys who get molested too, we will surely sew Agbada for them so they can appear decent to anyone who wants to rape them.

Freemanan, now, what do you think should be done by everyone of us to reduce the number of rape cases we hear everyday?

Your choice of wit is poor. Try harder. I approached the problem from its root but seems your knowledge on sociology is too poor so you prefer making sarcasm. I will leave you to those who will give you a surface solution. Thanks.

My point is people who get raped do not deserve it no matter their choice of clothing. You keep talking about the ladies, what of the little children, boys and girls, toddlers?
You saw on FP today, cases of children who were raped by grown men. Was that 9year old not decent too?

Maybe you should read the Op again. Thank you.

undecided read the link I just posted and the many others like it (e.g the one yester where the man blamed the 9 year old for seducing him) and others too where little kids are being molested then you won't tackle the problem from the "root" which in your wisdom is female indecency. WTH is wrong with you people?
How about the root that includes the depravity of the rapists?

I have never supported jungle justice until now. I think the best thing to do is to castrate anybody found guilty of rape. Especially if their victims are minors who can't wear provocative dresses to tempt them.
But care must be taken as many ladies will find rape allegation a perfect strategy to get back at their male offenders.

@ topic, I believe in reorientation. The average person out there is warped and almost imbecilic in reasoning. No offense.
How do you explain blaming and shaming victims while the perp goes around proudly like he did nothing. An added trauma on top of the one they've already been subjected to during the rape?
How do you explain a victims being asked "what were you wearing when it happened?". A simple but powerful question that connotes it is not the criminal's fault but the victims. How do you explain everyone around including law enforcement hushing victims and sometimes reprimanding them for not collecting money to just overlook what was done to them?

Until such diseased mindsets are scraped from among us, we would be pouring water on stone.
We need an overhaul. A very very sensational (if exaggerated) campaign against any form of sexual offenses regardless of if the victim walked out of his or her house neykid. Starting from the grassroots. Primary schools and working upwards. hopefully catch those ones young if we are lucky, some who have already grown with such mindsets will learn better.

Punishment too (long long jail terms). Like someone already suggested.
I don't even know how the sex offenders list will work when we don't have active database. How many employers can afford to run background checks in Nigeria. Maybe the big companies. But the smaller ones in smaller communities can't do such. They'll just employ a pedophile and set him or her to babysit kids.

I tire seriously.

Is quite unfortunate that we're in a country where the laws is only meant for the poor masses, the rich sit, sleep and wake on it,the only way this can be curbed is to set a law that anyone caught on the act will either go to jail or face death either by hanging or shooting and then take it serious, by the time the govt set's one or two Examples,I bet you, people will definitely learn their lessons because the rate of this act is getting very alarming in our country and our girls also have a very important role to play in other for this act to cut down or stop entirely.

We are trying to rise from our caveman days. Lynching people won't help us with that.

Like you said, someone could be accused falsely but before we know he's innocent, he's already been killed in moments of passionate anger.

The solution for justice must rely on our judicial system. That's where we need to change things to make sure criminals don't get away with horrendous offenses because our justice system is slack.

Hmmmn. You think the solution is castrating?
Do you support that their names and pictures be printed and distributed publicly?
@bolded, this is why I said only CONVICTED offenders should be punished since we know some ladies can also lie about being raped just to punish the innocent.
