Innoson Nigeria Produces Local Parts for Fighter Jets- NAF

NAF_Boss_Air_Marshall_S_B_abubakar_presenting_souvenir_to_the_chairman_innoson_motors_mr__innocent_chuwkumaThe Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar has lauded the management of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) Company for providing the needed technical support that has enabled the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to sustain its operations against the Boko Haram insurgents. The Company, at a time when the NAF would have been forced to ground its entire fleet of Alpha Jets due to lack of brake assembly, had helped to locally modify and overhaul the brake assembly of the MB-339 aircraft for adoption on the Alpha Jets. This ingenious effort by IVM is instrumental to the continued operation of the Alpha Jets, and had helped to save the day when help was not forthcoming from abroad. Air Mshl Abubakar stated that the contribution by IVM deserves national recognition and award, given the important role played by the Alpha Jet in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in North East Nigeria.
The collaboration between the NAF and IVM is in line with one of the key drivers of the CAS vision which is “strategic partnership with ministries, departments and agencies for enhanced research and development”. Beyond the feat, the NAF is poised to exploit the possibilities of mass producing the Alpha Jet break assembly and other parts locally by partnering with IVM, as well as other credible organisations, to build own capacity for enhanced self-reliance. The invitation of IVM team to Headquarters Nigerian Air Force for further discussions was based on this premise.
The CAS, while receiving the Chairman IVM, Mr Innocent Chukwuma and team members in his office, expressed the willingness by the NAF to expand the scope of existing research and development collaboration with IVM. “Our partnership with IVM would not end with the Alpha jet break assembly but a leeway to forge new frontiers, through research and development, to replicate some of the spares needed by our platforms” the CAS said. Air Mshl Abubakar stated that the feat has not only saved the country huge foreign exchange that otherwise would have been spent abroad but also adding value to Nigerians through provision of job opportunities.
Meanwhile, the Chairman IVM has expressed the readiness of his company to partner with the NAF to help manufacture locally some of the spares needed to keep its aircraft operational. Mr Innocent Chukwuma noted that such synergy as existing between the NAF and IVM would help to reduce the dependence on foreign technologies while promoting self-reliance, as well as technological and economic development. He disclosed that his company has the expertise to locally manufacture and assemble a number of automobile products that would be of benefit to the NAF.

Troops Ambush And Kill Boko Haram Terrorists

In continuation of their clearance operations of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in the North East, troops of 212 Tank Battalion, 29 Task Force Brigade, early this morning laid an ambush on some Boko Haram elements at a major cattle market in Gwai Mainari around Mainok general area.

The ambush party supported by a Quick Response Group (QRG), captured a Hilux vehicle containing 8 jerry cans of petroleum, oil and lubricants, a large quantity of 7.62mm ammunitions, 127mm ammunitions and 4 AK-47 rifles, as well as 5 hand grenades.

Some of the terrorists were killed while others escaped with gun shot wounds. It is important to note that more operational strategies are being  employed to further flush out the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be hiding in the North East.

SORRY GUYS OFF TOPIC; EFCC Recovers $1m in ‘Soak-away’ At Ex-Air Chief Amosu’s House In Badagry, Another N3bn traced Wife’s Account

A huge sum of $3 million has allegedly been recovered by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the EFCC, kept in a soak-away pit at Badagry resident of the embattled past Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd) New Telegraph Newspaper reported

Another N3 billion also traced to his wife, Lara Amosu bank account, EFCC source revealed to New Telegraph Newspaper.

According to New Telegraph, the EFCC has arrested, Lara, the wife of the immediate past Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd), over the arms procurement scandal. Impeccable sources told New Telegraph that Mrs. Lara Amosu was picked up by the EFCC operatives last week in Abuja.

She has been in the custody of the EFCC in Lagos for the past one week. It was learnt that her lawyer has been battling without success to get her released. Mrs. Amosu’s arrest followed the alleged discovery of about N3 billion in her bank accounts. She was allegedly holding the money in trust for her husband.

A source informed New Telegraph that other properties traced to the former CAS were also being held by his wife and children.

New Telegraph had reported that the EFCC discovered N17.5 billion in the accounts of wives of three airforce chiefs. The monies were scattered in various banks accounts.

A source familiar with the investigation told New Telegraph that N13 billion was traced to the bank accounts of a wife of a retired Air Vice Marshal, who held strategic position in the Nigeria Air Force (NAF). In the bank accounts of another wife of a serving senior officer, N1.5 billion was found. New Telegraph learnt that the officers handled the finance, budget and accounts of NAF.

Amosu was arrested two weeks ago by the EFCC over his involvement in the arms scandal. “Shortly after Amosu was picked up in Abuja, his wife, Lara, was subsequently arrested. Investigations conducted showed that some of the monies the former Chief of Air Staff made through some contracts and procurements in NAF were traced to his wife’s accounts.

“About N3 billion was traced to the wife’s accounts while some assets acquired by the former service chief was in her name and some others in her company’s name. “So, Lara is an accessory to a crime. The proceeds with her are from the arms funds. As we prosecute her husband, she must also be held accountable,” a source told New Telegraph.

It was further learnt that the wife of Air Vice Marshal J.B. Adigun, Chief of Account and Budget of NAF, has travelled out of the country two weeks ago, shortly after the arrest of her husband. The hurried trip was said to have become necessary in the face of the arms probe. Adigun has been indicted by the presidential arms panel. He is in the EFCC custody. Several of his properties in Lagos and Abuja have been seized by the antigraft agency. Billions of naira was said to have been traced to Adigun’s wife’s accounts.

New Telegraph has also learnt that the EFCC retrieved $1 million cash in Amosu’s residence in his residence in Badagary, Lagos. A source told New Telegraph that the money, in foreign currency, was retrieved when EFCC operatives carried out a search on Amosu’s residence in Badagry.

According to the source: “In continuation of the investigation into the arms probe, the EFCC operatives took Amosu to his residence in Badagry. After a thorough search of the residence, a fresh small ‘soakaway’ pit was discovered in the compound. The operatives suspected foul play, which informed the breaking of the ‘soakaway’. Surprisingly, $1 million was found in it. The money was subsequently confiscated.”

New Telegraph also learnt that Air Commodore Akinwale (rtd) who manages the St. Solomon Health Care Limited, an ultra-modern diagnostic centre owned by Amosu, along Adeniyi Jones Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos is still in the custody of the EFCC. The retired airforce officer oversees the medical centre on behalf of Amosu.

The diagnostic centre has been sealed off by the anti-graft agency. Meanwhile, the EFCC is still keeping Amosu, Adigun, and Air Commodore O. Gbadebo in Lagos. A source said that the anti-graft agency has been taking the indicted officers to assets traced to them, considered to have been acquired through funds illegally realised from the arms procurement. Some of the identified properties have been sealed off.

Amosu, Adigun and Gbadebo were arrested two weeks ago in Abuja. Impeccable sources told New Telegraph that the trio were flown into Lagos in an airforce aircraft on a Sunday and discreetly kept in a hotel.

The arrest and interrogation of Amosu is coming after New Telegraph had exclusively reported in the November 30, 2015 edition, that the Federal Government had directed the EFCC to prosecute the ex-CAS. Amosu, Adigun, Gbadebo and other indicted officers are being investigated over 10 NAF contracts totalling $930,500,690 awarded to Societe D’ Equipments Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd. between January 2014 and February 2015.

The award letters, according to the arms probe panel, contained misleading delivery dates, suggesting fraudulent intent in the award process.

Operatives are also grilling the ex-chief of army staff and the two senior officers over the procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi- 35M series at the cost of $136,944,000. The helicopters were discovered to be excessively priced and not operationally airworthy at the time of delivery.

The arms probe panel established that a brand new unit of Mi-24V Helicopter goes for about $30 million. The helicopters were delivered without rotor blades and upgrade accessories.

The three of them are also being grilled over the procurement of four used Alpha-Jets for the NAF at the cost of $7,180,000. Whereas NAF paid for four used Alpha-Jets, the panel confirmed that only two of the Alpha-Jet aircraft were ferried to Nigeria after cannibalisation of engines from the NAF fleet.

They are also being investigated in the procurement of 36D6 Low Level Air Defence Radar for NAF, which was awarded to GAT Techno Dynamics Ltd in April 2014 at the cost of $33 million under his watch.

The arms panel averred that the radars were excessively priced as a complete set of such radars goes for $6 million.

Acting on the recommendations made by the 13-man presidential committee auditing arms procurement between 2007 and 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari, had ordered the EFCC to conduct further investigation on the indictment of Amosu, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd); Air Marshal M.D. Umar (Rtd), Maj- Gen. ER Chioba (Rtd), AVM I.A. Balogun (Rtd), AVM A.G. Tsakr (Rtd), AVM A.G. Idowu (Rtd), AVM AM Mamu, AVM O.T Oguntoyinbo, and AVM T Omenyi. Others were: AVM J.B. Adigun, AVM R.A. Ojuawo, AVM JA Kayode-Beckley, Air Cdre S.A. Yushau (Rtd), Air Cdre A.O. Ogunjobi, Air Cdre G.M.D. Gwani, Air Cdre SO Makinde, Air Cdre A.Y. Lassa, Col. N. Ashinze and Lt Col. M.S. Dasuki (Rtd). Badeh had been in the custody of EFCC since Monday. Over N29 billion and $2 billion had been expended on the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) procurement activities alone between 2007 and 2015.

World’s Largest Anti-Submarine Robot Ship Ready for Sea-Trials in April
The U.S. Navy’s largest unmanned surface vehicle designed to track Chinese and Russian subs will be christened in April.

By Franz-Stefan Gady
February 11, 2016

The Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an agency responsible for developing and testing cutting-edge military technologies, will test-launch the prototype of its 140-ton Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV), named Sea Hunter, in April this year, the deputy director of DARPA, Steve Walker, said, according to National Defense Magazine.

The 132-feet (40 meters) long Sea Hunter, an unmanned autonomous trimaran, will be christened in April 2016 at the Vigor Shipyards in Oregon and immediately afterwards commence sea-trials for 18 months to test its long-range tracking capabilities, among a host of other things. During the testing DARPA will closely cooperate with the Office of Naval Research and the Space and Naval Systems Warfare Command.

The ship’s primary mission will be tracking enemy subs in shallow waters, I noted  in June 2015 (See: “US Navy to Deploy Robot Ships to Track Chinese and Russian Subs”). Furthermore, I explained that the ACTUV “is designed to operate autonomously for 60 to 90 days straight, surveil large stretches of ocean territory and — should an enemy sub be spotted — guide other U.S. naval assets to the vessel’s location to destroy it (the ACTUV itself is unarmed).”

“Imagine an unmanned surface vessel following all the laws of the sea on its own and operating with manned surface and unmanned underwater vehicles,” Walker told reporters during a briefing at DARPA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia on February 10. “We think the real cost savings will be in operating this vessel at sea compared to how we operate vessels today.”

The ACTUV will only cost about $15,000 to $20,000 per day to operate, according to Scott Littlefield, program manager of DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office, quoted in Sea Magazine. (In comparison, a destroyers costs around $700,000 to operate per day.) DARPA’s website notes that the ACTUV’s “objective is to generate a vessel design that exceeds state-of-the art platform performance to provide propulsive overmatch against diesel electric submarines at a fraction of their size and cost.”

Sea Magazine paraphrases Littlefield in pointing out other advantages of the ACTUV including “greater payload and endurance than a ship-launched unmanned surface vehicle, the ability to launch from and recover at a pier, and the elimination of the need to integrate the system with a ship.”

One of the trickier technological aspects in the development of the ACTUV will be the selection of a capable primary search-and-detection sonar. I reported in November 2015 that the Raytheon’s first fifth-generation medium-frequency hull-mounted sonar system has been installed on the Sea Hunter for testing. It goes without saying that properly identifying the ACTUV targets will be critical. Also,“autonomous compliance with maritime laws requires the correct identification of surface ships and other objects while at sea,” I explained.

The ACTUV is part of the  Pentagon’s so-called Third Offset strategy devised to help maintain U.S. military superiority over peer competitors such as China and Russia. “We need to continue to think how to build highly capable military systems, especially to prepare for fights with highly capable adversaries,” said Walker.(He did not mention the third offset strategy by name.)

The third offset strategy will not just rely on new military technologies but also focus on merging new with legacy technology, as well as new with old warfighting methods. “We need to mix it up,” said Walker. “We need to build war-fighting architectures that are more heterogeneous in nature, hard to target and rely on smaller and cheaper microelectronics technologies.”

The Pentagon seeks $2.973 billion in funds for DARPA in its fiscal year 2017 budget request, the same amount requested for fiscal year 2016.

Yeap the United States army is growing weary by the day simply because china's economy is growing by the day, today as we speak China as the biggest and vibrant economy in asia/Europe, technology wise they are growing and they are thirsty for more.........
Military wise they av a lot going on for them...size of there army, the way they just rose overnight to be world's no 3 and most importantly there closeness with russia.
As we speak today America spies like nothing on China and of recent the China activities on south China sea... America got know option than to keep an eye on them and on the other hand China does not trust Americans despite the economic relations they claim they have........... cool

To me it's a game of no trust...hide and seek.. angry grin

Nigerian Army’s fight against Boko Haram is a tremendous progress

Acting director for the Nigerian Army public relations says the Nigerian Army is making progress in their fight against Boko Haram

– Lives are still being lost, but the efforts are successful

– Cameroonian soldiers have been helpful in carrying out anti-terrorism operations

Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the acting director for the Nigerian Army public relations, has posted a Facebook account updating Nigerians on the progress of the Nigerian Army in fighting Boko Haram terrorists.

He called the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the north-east a tremendous progress.

Usman also told about an occurrence in Dogon Gida and New Marte when four soldiers lost lives after stepping on an improvised explosive device planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in the ground. Notwithstanding, the reinforced team continues their patrolling in search of perpetrators.

A clearance operations against Boko Haram has also been carried out by Nigerian task force brigades, together with their Cameroonian counterparts in Ngoshe and Sino villages, advancing to Mararraba, Angwan Fada, Dale, Wizha, Bokko Timit, Bokko Nasanu, Bokko Hide.

All Boko Haram enclaves there were cleared, and 17 women and 28 children rescued. Five IEDs were detonated by the troops and an IED manufacturing workshop destroyed.

The Cameroonian forces have also knocked out Boko Haram terrorists gun trucks, raided and cleared several IED-making factories along border towns.

Nigerian Army Destroys Boko Haram's Bomb Making Factory, Kills Many Terrorists

The Nigerian military on Saturday announced that it killed 10 Boko Haram insurgents and destroyed a bomb manufacturing factory near the country’s border with Cameroon.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Sani Usman, in a statement said troops from the 121 Task Force Battalion moved through key villages along the border and linked up with the Cameroonian forces.

The villages included Mararraba, Angwan Fada Dale, Wizha, Bokko Timit, Bokko Nasanu, Bokko Hide, up to Ngoshe.

During the operations, Mr. Usman said Boko Haram hideouts in the area were cleared.

“In the process, the troops killed 10 Boko Haram terrorists and also rescued 45 persons which included 17 women and 28 children,” the army spokesperson said.

“The troops also discovered that the terrorists cratered the road linking Pulka, Mararraba and Ngoshe and safely detonated 5 IEDs buried by the terrorists.

“In addition, they also destroyed an IED manufacturing workshop in the village. They also cleared Sino village.”

Besides, he said the Cameroonian forces knocked out gun trucks belonging to the insurgents, raided and cleared several IED making factories along the border towns.

On a sad note, the military reported that a patrol team from 5 Brigade, traversing Dogon Gida and New Marte stepped on an undetected IED buried by suspected terrorists.

Four soldiers suffered various degrees of injuries and their vehicle badly damaged.
