LordAdam16: You will shine with these points in a primary school civic class, not any higher. First off, don't turn history on its head. SW real party had no history of alliance with the northern party prior to CPC and ACN. If anything, it was SE/SS party that had been doing so - NPC and NCNC in the first republic and NPN and NPP in the second republic. In the third republic, only anambra was in SDP, the rest were in NRC where you had the conservative northern power brokers. The time SW parties wanted alliance, AG reached out to NCNC to form UPGA in 1964 elections but after the alliance was defeated in that election, NCNC returned to NPC in which it had been in alliance since 1960 under which Zik was made the president. In the run-up to 1983 elections, UPN wanted to align with NPP to form the abortive Progressive Party Alliance. It failed. You don't appear to differentiate between tribes or regions on one hand, and partisan politics on the other. I said 'Tinubu of ACN/APC' owes no loyalty to 'Jonathan of PDP' in a partisan contest and you replied by asking what loyalty does SE/SS owe Obj. You are actually agreeing with my point. They owe Obj loyalty, not personally, but because he was the candidate of PDP which was and still is the dominant party in the two regions. If they had not wanted him, he wouldn't be the party candidate in the first instance. Once he won the primary, they are duty bound to ensure the party success. You even referred to some northerners that made GEJ lose in the region as saboteurs. It means you agreed they did something wrong and in real fact, they acted wrongly. Contrast that to the same 1999, the dominant party in SW was AD and they cleared the polls. Obj's PDP lost woefully in SW despite his being the son of the soil but he was in a 'wrong' party so to say. SE/SS and SW majority have never been in the same party from pre-independence to date. AG/NCNC, UPN/NPP & NPN, SDP/NRC and recently AD, ACN, APC/PDP except by some ephemeral alliance like in the first republic UPGA and AD/PDP in 2003. It therefore stand to reason that the dominant party in each region will have the majority vote though the other party will have some votes too. Abiola of SDP got a number of votes in the SE but he still lost to Tofa of NRC in total votes in the same region because NRC was dominant there. That is party loyalty. As for Tinubu, he was never ever in control of Ondo state, they moved from AD to PDP to Labour. In ekiti, they moved from AD to PDP and when fayose imbroglio happened in 2007, he teamed up with fayemi to get a court judgement reversal of the initial PDP victory. When fayose patched up again with PDP, he returned the state to PDP. I don't know who you attributed APC success in Edo state to. Is it Tinubu or oshiomole? This is not to belittle Tinubu or ACN/APC, no doubt, ACN/APC is a big party in SW and during the last presidential election, majority of non-aligned SWner bought into its campaign promise to vote for APC but PDP still got substantial votes above constitutional threshold in almost all the SW state. Until a single party becomes dominant in all the regions of the south, don't expect a pan-south support for a southern candidate just like Abiola of SDP didn't win in SE dominated by NRC and OBJ won in SE dominated by PDP but lost in his own region dominated by AD. |
