The Igbo Leaders of Thought, ILT, has attacked the Minister of Transport, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, for asking Ndigbo to apologise to President Muhammadu Buhari for not voting for him in 2015. ILT described the statement as not only comical but irresponsible. Amaechi had called on the Igbos to apologise to Buhari and back him up for second term in 2019. But the ILT, through its Secretary, Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi told Vanguard that people like Amaechi were major problems to progress in the country, as he was being theatrical in his actions. Amucheazi said, “People like Chibuike Amaechi are some of the problems of Nigeria. “The man is comical, almost irresponsible. “People are talking about more serious things like restructuring and he is talking about irrelevant issues. “This is why we are not developing. He is comical and this is unfortunate.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/amaechi-is-irresponsible-igbo-leaders.html

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has reacted to call by elder statesman and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General TY Danjuma (rtd), to the people of Nigeria to defend themselves against rampaging Fulani herdsmen. General TY Danjuma had yesterday in Taraba State called on people of the state and Nigerians in general take up arms and defend themselves in the face of the endless killings. The Ekiti governor in support of Danjuma’s statement said it was time Buhari listened to warning concerning herdsmen. Fayose on his twitter page wrote “General T. Y. Danjuma just said what we have said several times. There is complicity from the highest place in this country concerning these killings by herdsmen. “I hope they won’t now remember that Gen. Danjuma keeps “looted” billions of dollars in his borehole. “#IstandWithDanjuma. Gen. Danjuma’s position is not different from what I have said in the past. For him to have broken his silence at this time should be enough warning to @MBuhari that it is time to go back to Daura. “He should leave honourably or be disgraced out of office.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/fayose-reacts-to-ty-danjumas-call-tells.html

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo yesterday lamented the poor federal industrial presence in Igbo land in general and the South East in particular. The group noted that there is virtually no federal establshment to provide jobs for the teeming youths of the zone. “The only federal presence in the zone are prisons and abandoned grain silos,” the group lamented. “Though there is ongoing work in some federal roads in the zone , the pace is very slow,” the group complained. The National Deputy Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Chuks Ibegbu therefore urged the federal government to build refineries, dams , heavy duty industries and inland ports in the zone. He also urged the federal government to build an airport in Arochukwu or Afikpo to open up the Cross River region of Igbo land. On the quest for more states in Igbo land and the restructuring of Nigeria, Ibegbu maintained the position of Barr Nnia Nwodo , the President General of the body that “Nigeria will not move forward until it’s restructured.” He also called for “the immediate creation of an additional state in the South East to bring it at par with other zones of the country before further states are created in Nigeria.” Ibegbu re-iterated the position of the President General of Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo that “Nigeria must operate on the principle of true fiscal and physical federalism if it wants to make a head way. The AU must also expedite work on the trans African High way across the Sahara desert to tame desertification , the shrinking of Lake Chad that bring about massive shift of herdsmen to the South . “If Israel did it in the Negev Desert and China in the Gobi Desert, African leaders can do it here and help tame the constant challenges of wave of deadly migrations of our people to Europe ,” Ibegbu noted. He also lauded the renewed construction work going on in Aba , the commercial nerve centre of Abia state. Ibegbu who spoke at a reception held by Aba Young professionals for some of their pioneer members in Aba recently, commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for the surge in construction work in the town and effort to open up the Port Harcourt Road and the roads to Ariaria International Market. He noted with nostalgia the time traders from West and Central Africa used to besiege Aba for business purposes and hoped that era will be restored with the current pace of work in the city. Ibegbu also commended Governor Ikpeazu for the effort to revive the shoe industry in Aba by sending some shoe makers from the town overseas for training . He called on all Abians to rally round the governor and the give the state its rightful position in Nigeria. The President of Aba Young Professionals, Chimdi Ngwakwe thanked the Ohanaeze Spokesman for finding time to honor the event and assured Ndi Aba that the group will continue to develop ideas and template that will restore the glory of the town. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/no-federal-industrial-presence-in-igbo.html

Nigerians will not stop amazing people with the way they tackle issues sometimes, and this one has left me very weak. A Nigerian Lady identified as Amara Chukwu Sarkodie on Facebook has taken to YabaLeftOnline Facebook Group to say she can in no way date Igbo guy especially Phyno. The Lady, who is also an Igbo indigene, says Igbo guys are rude, and she can in no way date any Igbo guys. She simply wrote on the platform; “I can never date Phyno. He is an Igbo man and will be rude” The truth behind this her attestation is yet to be revealed as no one knows if she and the Igbo rapper as in any way cross paths, or she is just saying it from a general perspective of how many people view celebrities. I don’t know who is telling her that Phyno would even like to date her. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/i-cannot-date-phyno-because-he-is-igbo.html

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, says corruption no longer poses a threat to the national economy because of the war being waged against it by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Chief Odigie-Oyegun said this yesterday in Abuja at the party’s national secretariat, when he received the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi and the management team on a courtesy visit and official notification of his nomination for a fellowship award and invitation to the 15th combined convocation ceremony of the institution scheduled for Wednesday, March 28, 2018. “On corruption, we all know that corruption is fighting back. But it is not a problem, you fight with a flick of a switch, because corruption is very rich, corruption is very wealthy, corruption is very elitist; they are bound to fight back and they are fighting back. But thank God we have a president who is single-minded about taming that scourge and tame it with will. We know now that corruption is not as brazen as it was. “We don’t just now take money from the public till and distribute to politicians and the rest of it, that no longer happens… nobody is saying corruption has been wiped out, there is no country in the world where corruption has been wiped out; but it is being tackled in Nigeria to the point where it can no longer be a threat to the national economy, where it does not become an acceptable way of life, of doing business,” He said. Odigie-Oyegun said the President Buhari APC-led administration was delivering on its election promises despite difficulties and challenges. “I am particularly pleased by your recognition that in spite of difficulties, government of the APC is delivering on its promises to the Nigerian people. That is important for me and I really see this award as coming to me on behalf of the government and the party. The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Dr Dzukogi, who spoke during the visit, said Odigie-Oyegun’s choice was informed by many successes recorded by the APC-led administration. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/corruption-no-longer-threat-to-nigerias.html

An unidentified mobile policeman guarding an oil facility operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company has reportedly shot dead a soldier in Odimodi community, in the Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. The incident occurred on Saturday during a misunderstanding between the two men. A credible community source, who confirmed the incident, said he could not tell what led to the argument. He noted that witnesses had seen the two security men engage in a fierce exchange of words. Other members of the team were said to have gone on a patrol of oil facilities in the area at the time. He said the argument was followed by multiple gunshots a few minutes later. The source explained that the policeman, after killing the victim, shot continuously into the air to scare away residents before absconding with the victim’s rifle. It was gathered that operatives of the Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe, later sent some of its men to remove the corpse from the scene. A community leader, who did not want to be identified, said the development had created tension among residents, adding that there was fear that the military might invade the community to search for the fleeing policeman. He said, “The incident happened on Saturday at noon. The two officers – a mopol and the military officer – were members of a combined security team stationed to guard oil facilities in Odimodi community. They had a misunderstanding. After a while, we heard gunshots. “When people got there, they discovered that the mobile policeman had killed the soldier. The policeman cocked his gun and fired at the soldier and thereafter shot to scare people away from the scene. “He (policeman) took the soldier’s gun and ran away. As of now, he has not been apprehended. The JTF authorities have removed the corpse of the slain soldier. There is tension in the community as we speak. People are afraid that the military may invade the community.” Another source said residents had no hand in the killing, adding that the community leadership was ready to collaborate with security agencies to fish out the culprit if he was still in the area. The spokesperson for Operation Delta Safe, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi, said he was not aware of the incident. He said, “I don’t know your source and I’m not aware of anything like that.” The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, promised to react after speaking to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area. He had yet to get back as of press time. However, an operative of the Department of State Services confirmed the incident, adding that efforts were being made to apprehend the killer cop. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/policeman-kills-soldier-in-delta-see.html

The United States, US, has said ranching remains the solution to the crisis between herdsmen and farmers in Benue State. US Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington said this when he visited the State Governor, Samuel Ortom in Makurdi, the state capital. Symington said if cattle were properly reared in ranches, Nigeria could be one of the highest income earners from milk production. He said, “I come from a family of farmers and part of my family used to move cattle from one state called Colorado to another state called Texas every year and over time they changed until now the cow business that they do is very much one that takes advantage of the land and we have to move them on trucks. “I had a great conversation the other day just outside the city of Jos with one of the great milk producers of the world, a company that produces milk. And I talked to the guy and he was mentioning to me that the milk that comes from the Fulani cattle can be incorporated into the great milk produced here. “Literally the future of the nation could be rich when the milk of those herders get fed to the sons and daughters of families and their vegetables get fed to the sons and daughters of the herders. I am happy that you are thinking in this direction Mr Governor.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/ranching-only-solution-to-end-farmers.html

A religious group, the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, on Monday described the 2018 examinations timetable recently released by the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, as volatile, warning that the timetable is capable of causing a disturbance of public peace if it erodes the Jumat period. WAEC recently scheduled Chemistry for 2 pm to 4 pm on Friday April 20, 2018. But following criticisms from MURIC, the subject was moved backwards to Tuesday April 10, 2018. However, ceramics (Essay) and Forestry (Essay) will now be held on Friday April 20, 2018 from 2 pm to 4 pm. While stressing that Muslims all over the world attend Jumat prayer in their mosques from 1 – 2.30 pm on Fridays, MURIC, in a statement by its Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, pointed out that educational institutions and offices often leave a two-hour window (from 1 to 3 pm) for the faithful to go and worship. The Director of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu had confirmed the slight amendment, stating that “For the sake of the people who will go to the mosque, the exam will be delayed till they come back. The paper will be delayed till 2:30 pm or 3 pm, when the Muslims will return from the mosque”. But MURIC is not satisfied with Ojijeogu’s explanation, maintaining that it is not convincing enough, and “leaves Muslim candidates at the mercy of WAEC’s ad hoc staff, invigilators and supervisors, some of whom can be overzealous Muslim-haters”. Akintola said in the statement; “Even if it is true, this amendment still needs clarification from WAEC. For instance, we need to know whether or not some Muslim candidates take these two subjects (Ceramics and Forestry). Yet this may not be the end of our inquiry even if no Muslim candidate has registered for the subjects this year because some Muslim candidates are likely to show interest in them in the near future. “The ideal thing for WAEC to do, therefore, is to steer clear completely from scheduling any examination during the Jumat period. There is no need to stereotype Muslims and the subjects they are likely to take. Knowledge is a universal thing and candidates are not likely to consider religion as a factor when choosing their subjects. “The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, was shocked by the first timetable released by WAEC. It was unfair, tyrannical and provocative. It was equally myopic, thoughtless and parochial. This ‘amended’ version presupposes that WAEC is confused. “We were shocked because issues like this had been trashed out with WAEC before. For WAEC to have tried this again, we strongly suspect that the regional examination body is suffering from chronic administrative amnesia. “WAEC appears confused because there are three other clashes on the ‘amended’ timetable which WAEC did not address at all. Social Studies (Objective) is slated for 1 – 1.50 pm on Friday 4th May, 2018 while Electronics (Objective) is also billed to take place between 1 and 3 pm on Friday 11th May, 2018. Woodwork is equally scheduled for the same day from 12 – 3 pm. So how do we reconcile all these? WAEC is out to slay Muslim candidates. “Placed pari passu with the ‘amended’ timetable, it is clear that WAEC’s spokesperson seeks to deceive Muslim candidates. He is leading them into a trap. If indeed the timetable has been amended and Chemistry has been moved to morning period on Tuesday 10th April, 2018, why would there be any need for “the exam would be delayed till they come back” since it would no longer be taken on a Friday. “WAEC spokesperson also spoke of the paper being delayed till “…2.30 pm or 3 pm”. This is supposed to be a policy matter. Is he not so sure? Which one should WAEC ad hoc officials operate? 2.30 pm deadline or 3 pm? WAEC is speaking from both sides of its mouth. “We recall our press statement dated 26th August, 2015 under the caption “WAEC Examination Timetable is an Invitation to Chaos”. That press statement was issued three years ago when WAEC fixed three different subjects between the hours of 1pm and 3 pm on three consecutive Fridays running from 11th, 18th, and 25th September of that year. MURIC cried foul and WAEC later adjusted its timetable. “So what has changed since then? Does WAEC intend to bring examination materials to its Muslim candidates in the mosque? Is WAEC asking Muslim candidates to choose between worshipping and their examination just as some religious bigots told Muslim students in the past? Is this not an attempt by WAEC to jeopardize the interest and future of Muslim candidates? Is this also not a deliberate attempt to ease out Muslims from vital degree courses like medicine, pharmacy, nursing, etc? “Once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence but the third time is enemy action. The 2015 incident was not the first time. Is WAEC targeting Muslim candidates for destabilization? It appears the only language WAEC understands is force. Although Muslims will not resort to the use of force, we will resist WAEC’s illegal, unlawful, illegitimate and unconstitutional manipulation of its timetable to deprive Muslim candidates of their Allah-given fundamental right to worship as enshrined in Section 38 (i) & (ii) of the 2011 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. Any WAEC timetable which trespasses into the Jumat period (12 – 3 pm on Friday) is therefore ultra vires, null and void. “By this press statement, we are notifying the Federal Ministry of Education of the volatile nature of WAEC’s timetable. It is capable of causing a disturbance of public peace if it erodes the Jumat period. Nigeria has witnessed enough religious riots and the Ministry must call WAEC to order. “WAEC’s regional status notwithstanding, the Ministry of Education owes it a duty to ensure that no educational exercise capable of stirring civil disturbance is allowed to take place under its watch. The Ministry of Education should have an input in an exercise of this magnitude. In view of the fact that WAEC keeps repeating the same irritating and illegal time table year after year, we suggest that from now on, WAEC time tables should be scrutinized by the ministry of education to ensure that nothing unlawful creeps into it. “Muslim candidates and their parents will be left with no choice than to mobilize to WAEC examination centers in peaceful protest if this complaint is ignored. “We demand a WAEC timetable that leaves the 12 – 3 pm window which Muslims need for Jumat service untouched. An ideal examination timetable for Friday will therefore be 9 am to 12 noon and 3.30 – 6 pm. In fact, heaven will not fall if examinations are limited to morning period on Fridays. “The WAEC timetable imbroglio has once again brought the Friday Question to focus. We have no iota of doubt that WAEC will have no audacity to fix an examination during the Jumat period if Friday is free like Sunday. Or should we simply ask WAEC to fix one subject for the Jumat period and another one on Sunday morning from 9 am to 12 noon, at least for parity? How does that sound? Who feels it knows it. WAEC should stop oppressing Muslims. All we are saying is: Give Us Jumat period. Respect Allah, our Creator, even if you don’t respect us. “WAEC is pursuing an aggressive anti-Islam policy. Fixing examinations during Jumat service gives non-Muslims undue advantage over Muslims. This is discriminatory and unjust. WAEC has lost its soul. “To round up, we charge the Federal Ministry of Education to call WAEC to order. We advise WAEC authorities to consult widely when fixing its timetable because no public institution is an island, entire of itself. WAEC should note that the Jumat period (12 – 3 pm) is not negotiable for any subject. We urge Muslims to remain calm, to eschew violence but to be alert and watchful. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/waec-is-confused-muric-reveals-what.html

The House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Bottling Company, NBC, producers of Coca Cola to tell Nigerians that two of their products, Fanta and Sprite were dangerous to health when consumed with Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C). The House said this must be done by printing warning labels on the stipulated products. The lawmakers of the Green Chamber also urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to compel producers/manufacturers of all soft drinks in Nigeria to indicate all chemicals, acids, colorants and preservatives contained in their products on the packs or bottles “no matter how negligible they are.” These were some of the recommendations of the Ad-hoc Committee that investigated the production and distribution of drinks manufactured by the Nigeria Bottling Company Limited and other drinks produced or marketed in Nigeria which were considered and unanimously adopted by the House on Wednesday. The Committee headed by the House Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila had between October 24 and 25, 2017 conducted extensive public hearing on the matter. Lawmakers had at the hearing interrogated the relevance of sunset yellow, a colourant they said had been proven to cause Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and consequently banned in some countries such as Finland, Sweden, United Kingdom and Australia. The Committee also expressed worry that benzoic acid content in Nigeria was much higher than what was obtained in other climes. For instance, while it is 250milligram per kilogram in Nigeria, it is 150mg per kg in the UK. Also at the hearing, the Consumer Protection Council, CPC stated that sunset yellow can be done away with while benzioc acid level could be reduced. “Sunset yellow is not that relevant. Bezioc acid should be reduced. “Because, they are able to separate everything. Hyperactivity in children is a problem. They have figured out the problem. “We have not,” the CPC Director-General, Babatunde Irukare said. But in her presentation at the hearing, Simidele Onabanjo, a Deputy-Director who represented the then Acting Director-General of NAFDAC, Ademola Mogbojuri said that preservatives were healthy. She said: “Any certificate of analysis as being issued in the NADAC laboratory will address the physical parameter, the appearance, the colour, the taste. It will address the chemical composition, the microbial composition including the yeast, ecolag, the bacteria. It will also address contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals. “They are actually preservatives. Asorbebic acid is a fortificant, it can an anti-oxidant and it can be preservative. Those things are added like a stablizer so that the drinks will not break down in trade. That’s the essence of their been there. The contention now is that in some countries, the standards are lower while in Nigeria, ours is a bit higher. While the disparity. “It has do with whatever that’s is adopted in the country. But because there still a bit of contention, they are reviewing it. We cannot unilaterally as an agency take any other country if it has not been adopted as a Nation. Standards are developed by the SON but there are other organizations that participate in setting these standards”. Laying the report on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, Hon. Gbajabiamila said “That the House do consider the Report of the Ad-hoc Committee to Investigate the Production and Distribution of Drinks Manufactured by the Nigeria Bottling Company Limited and other Drinks Produced or Marketed in Nigeria and approve the recommendations therein.” Other recommendations also adopted included: “That warning labels be printed on Fanta and Sprite that the products are harmful when taken with Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C); that the Regulatory Agencies be adequately funded by the Government to enable them effectively monitor and ensure compliance; that expiration dates must be printed on all carbonated and non-carbonated drinks produced and marketed in Nigeria; that standard review should be carried out biannually by the Regulatory Agencies, particularly the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) partnering with NAFDAC and that the Committee on Health Services should pay critical attention to the activities of NAFDAC. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/tell-nigerians-how-fanta-sprite-could.html

Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Mohammadu Nuru Abdullah has lamented the fresh attack on his members in Plateau State. Abdullah, in a statement, described the Monday night attack which left herdsmen dead as an act of terror. “We are overwhelmingly shocked that the Irigwe militias, in an effort to accomplish their mission of terrorising Fulani herdsmen in Bassa Local Government Area in Plateau State, had on Monday re-launched an attack on Fulani cattle herders and mercilessly killed three persons, namely, Abubakar Shehu, Abubakar Gidado and Ishaq Yusuf without any provocation. “It is also disturbing that the Irigwe community always trespasses into other neighboring local government areas, launch their attacks and kill our people for no cause.” Abdullah added that on the same Monday when three of his kinsmen were killed, the same militias attacked and killed 38 cows, saying 20 of the cows belonged to Wada Alh Audu, while 18 belonged to Umaru Ibrahim. “The Irigwe militias usually cross into Riyom, Jos South and part of southern Kaduna to strike. In this particular incident, they operated from Rukwechungu village of Miango district in Bassa LGA into Gero village of Gyel district in Jos South LGA. “They also beat up and wounded Haruna Zakariya, who is now receiving treatment at a clinic in Rafin Bauna. It is on record that this militia group has been unleashing terror against our innocent cattle headers in the areas. “It is unfortunate that while efforts are being made to restore peace and order, the silent killings of Fulani herdsmen by Irigwe militia continue unabated,” he said. Abdullah, however, thanked the state government and the security agencies in Plateau State for restoring order. He also advised community leaders in the area to work out modalities to compliment the efforts of the state government and the security agencies. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/03/miyetti-allah-reacts-to-killing-of.html
