hmnnn can some one explain why my system clock always sets it self back by an hour? i noticed when i was installing that the installer always put nigerian time to be 1 hr behind, so i manually put in the right time. now it always sets itself back by an hour! i have set the proper zone for the clock to be nigeria but. . . . . . . . .

SA Lady:well the uncle part does look somehow, but i guess its the exaggerated sense of respect we have here in our society. cos i really dont see what "uncle" has to do with someone who aint related to you. . . . . . . just the way every old woman is "mummy" ![]() BUT I HAVE ISSUES WITH THE HIGHLIGHTED PART!!!! are you, SA Lady saying that a 32 yr old nigerian should go about chasing 32 yr old nigerian women? somebody pls educate this woman on the reality!!! i can assure you, if you was here in naija, and your 32 yr old brother brought a 30-32 yr old "mommy" home, you would ask him to try look elsewhere!!! ![]() besides, for a lot of pragmatic reasons, it does not make sense to go running after 32 yr old women. (NB: i firmly stand by this outlook) as i always recall, when men were 18-22 yr old boys, the girls would tell you "your a small boy, they only date men" so therefore, sorry 32 yr old men also only date "girls" few exceptions noted, there are always bad apples in the barrel.!! |
una wicked oh ![]() put the fella outta his misery na! ![]() hmmn mr poster, what does yagi antenna have to do with a digital satellite receiver box? |
thats my point na, i said CABLE MODEM!!!! THE DECODER ALONE IS THE DOWNLINK, THE MODEM DOES ITS BIT!!! just saw that sky even sells theirs with a wireless router sef. funny thing is the unltd package costs 7.50 pounds http://www.sky.com/shop/broadband-talk/ my point is the decoder alone wont do BUT WITH SOME EQUIPMENT, the decoder is very capable of being ur downlink!! |
i hate to be a scammers advocate. but i know it is possible BUT NOT ON EVERY SATTELLITE. if you can cast your mind back, a few years ago, Multichoice in collaboration with MWEB was actually doing this via their decoders!! the price was prohibitive though. actually, if you get a satellite that carries data along with tv signals you can do this. the thing is data signals and tv signals are not any different, its the equipment that translates it that is different. for internet, i believe you use what is know as a cable modem which you hook up to the decoder. . . . . . . come to think of it, i know for a fact that in france you can get a bundled package of TV and DATA over the same equipment from one provider. believe SKY UK does this too (I MAY BE WRONG, LET SOMEONE ABROAD CLARIFY) http://www.sky.com/shop/ this link will help further on this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_modem further googling too. feel free. the catch as i have said before is the satellite provider has to be providing data too anor indicator is this link though it says nothing about the technecalese http://www.ehow.com/how_6158064_hook-up-internet-satellite-tv.htmlthe thing is, FTA pple ought to know this too since you pple know how to find out details about satellites. bottomline is i do believe its possible. but whether our scammers can actually do it, is anyones guess. if i were you, i'd stick to MTN et al (unfortunately) |
hmnn, i dont have my glo sim here with me now. BUT, if you dont currently have an active gloflat subscription u shldnt be using that setting! TRY THIS: NAME: Glo APN: glosecure USERNAME: gprs PASSWORD: gprs DIAL NO: *99# or *99*1***# |

hmmnn, good question @ lov4sat. as a matter of fact, i also know someone who has been asking me if his tv which incidentally came with both terrestrial and sattelite digital recievers and even the slots for the cards!! would work with startimes or other sattelite tv I know startimes sells one lcd tv with similar stuff where u dont need a seperate decoder, just the TV with inbuilt digital reciever!. the chap says he tried DSTV card on the sattelite slot but did not work. strange thing too was he said when HITV launched and still operated a terrestrial platform, he could receive their feeds free at first, then later scrambled!! what do ya FTA pple think? i said it wont work cos if it were to work, the TV should be picking scrambled signals now?? am i right? |
is it just me or is MTN very very bleeped today? |
update the system first na!! they did a new kernel for 1 bug like dat. but quite clearly it did not affect you. if it did the entire system will be unuseable. if that fails, remove software center completely, reinstall and try it. if that still fails, throw away ur laptop ![]() but seriously, is software center that important to you? anyway why not adopt the usb install method? its much much faster! |
@ v3 wetin? unless u wanna do fresh partitioning/resizing, nuthin shld happen to ur windows!! |
he is alive!!!!!! ![]() guy haw far naa? shey u see the fine mulatto nurse wey i send you? ![]() |
i truly hope u get it this time. because of you i removed my Kubuntu install. (actually i started hating it lol) that KDE remains a flight of fancy jare for me. cool for beginners with high end machines and love for gloss OR seasoned pros with a love for eyecandy. what i will do is install the kde desktop, and boot into it occasionally to get a feel of it proper. i could'nt understand the kpackage kit thing. i wanted to install synaptic yet i couldnt and somehow terminal never seemed to work for installing. flash i could'nt get!!! i will do them all in gnome with my fav apps, then get the KDE desktop so at least it wont seem so bad!! ![]() i find functionality shockingly poor. Gnome is simple to use, straight forward. and i prefer it like that!!! |
the first 2 pics are ur options. the partition that has ubuntu in my shot should be your own empty partition which u click on to select as the install partition. the next shots are the other more advanced option referred to by me and evil brain which u somehow find urself there. follow the previous instructions along with the pics
|
ok pics for koolwilly

go back to the pages before this one in ur screenie. in this shot you are supposed to specify your partitions manually. before this page there is a page where you choose whether to install them side by side or to chose locations yourself. choose the install side by side option. just in case you end up here again (i dunno oo) then double click on the last partition, the one with open space, it will give you anor dialog box, there is a drop down there too. in there choose use this partition, select the filesystem type to be EXT4 and tick the box that says format mount point will also be / USE partition filesystem = EXT4 Mount point = / tick format box. i cant do screenies, cos i dont have the time to boot up an iso right now!! continue |
ur not very helpful with your questions i dont have the foggiest idea what you mean! just in case the new installer asks for the partition where it will install the bootloader. its a dropdown menu, just choose /dev/sda i also hope you set the partitions correctly or ur using the guided partitioner? as in ur drive is divided into 2 and u choose the empty one? remember to format too |
ahan!!! complain 1 abeg wetin be dis one. i have killed everything but still!!! i restarted yet!!!! edit: i deleted my lock file!! seems ok now (bad though) sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
|
wellz, i am actually running Kubuntu as i speak and i really dont know what i think. am kinda impressed with the general outlook, kinda put off by the fact that its new. . . . it took me like 2 tries to remember i was dealing with Konsole and kate and Dolphin etc here. also amazingly it took my proxies this time unlike my last experience with 9.10 kubuntu. install took 10 minutes via usb. really trying to get my thots together tho. guess i will start complaining soon ![]() ps: why is there so much grey!! and there is just one wallpaper in it, BIGBROVAR> . . . . . . . . . .!!! ![]() how do i make this thing look different? i really hate having ordinary looking stuff lol. (this will take some getting used to!!)
|
oh well, too bad. guess i will have to do them afresh. what do u think the learning curve for kubuntu is? as in major? and i do believe i can replace kpackagekit with synaptic? i really cant stand that thing. . . . . i have a spare pc for a few weeks and i wanna see sumtin sumtin with Kde (that bigbrovar fella is one hell of a teaser), but going by my previous experiences, im pretty sure i will format the thing after 2hrs ![]() anyway let me store this here so when i need it i will come back here!: may prove useful for other new pple anyways To get you started with your fresh Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat installation, I'd though I'd share the commands I use to install the basic stuff. For everything else there's Ubuntu Tweak or manual installation, however these following should get you started. Important: before running the commands below, you need to enable the restricted, multiverse and partner repositories. To do this, open the Ubuntu Software Center, select Edit > Software Sources, and on the first tab (Ubuntu Software), check all the repositories. Then switch to the second tab (Other Software) and check the "Canonical Partners" repository. 1. Install Adobe Flash, Java, fonts, codecs and other restricted stuff (I don't use "ubuntu-restricted-extras" because it also installs some stuff I really don't need while it doesn't install a lot of the applications that I do need): sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good libdvdnav4 libdvdread4 libmp4v2-0 libxine1-ffmpeg ffmpeg flashplugin-nonfree sun-java6-fonts rar unrar p7zip-full p7zip-rar unace unp zip unzip ttf-liberation mencoder mplayer sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jre sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh sudo apt-get install build-essential automake make checkinstall dpatch patchutils autotools-dev debhelper quilt fakeroot xutils lintian cmake dh-make libtool autoconf git git-core subversion bzr sudo apt-get install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc openshot gimp gthumb pidgin skype adobeair wine aptitude chromium-browser multiget gwget blueman banshee deluge wine |
yeah i already did. thats where i always check em. the mistake i made this time was i didn't copy them out immediately i pull them. i usually do |
lynxnoon:hmmn, na im u talk like dat? shey now we can now know which network strength in Network Mgr? thats an improvment. already downloaded it, just trying to find time to install. and please how does that markings thing in synaptic work?am asking becos aptoncd cant find most of the packages on my system anymore, even me sef cant find them (maybe the system auto purged em). i need to get a list if all stuff i presently have so i can just auto-install them in 10.10 chai, and i have installed some large games o!! and i cant seem to find them anywhere!! |
@ Netotse, i dont have that version!! Mobinga nor remember send am to me too na ![]() hmmn, well i dunno if the windows version will work like the linux version (the windows version is pure crap) but u may try MULTIGET. thats the secret for we linuxers. esp for rapidshare. abeg wetin do IDM, i have downloaded the same file from different servers twice, but when it gets to 99.99% it stops and wont finish the damn job (timing out)!! wetin dey do am? |
blackweaver:yes boss!! ![]() how u dey, dont have ur numba anymore else i'd have called u sometime!! which rock did u crawl out from? the netbook edition does look very interesting true!! 10.10 is not really worth the stress if u dont wanna i think. there is nothing new (ok not true, they say that the power management thing has been worked on, and for me that alone is worth upgrading for) we will see sha. downloading as i type |
@ puskin, how u want make i do na, u sef know say time na war during the week. sef why u come dey shut my name sef? i tiff ur shawty? ![]() this pwi no dey gree me upload na, see i don try wella, i even promise pple firmware to cure E156G ish, i no see am do. i dunno if na the craze network or na the tin nor gree. cool down ehn, nor worry i for hunt link but me sef nor remember where i get am, but am sure i got it from leech site. i dey try pull ubuntu 10.10 sef, past 3 hrs e neva reach 200mb, una nor dey follow me suffer dat one o. when i post 2 mbps shot una go dey shout ![]() for avoidance of doubt, utorrent and iwp nor dey gree, except the torrent na strictly http and u can change the default incoming ports in the client to the ones pwi open. na expo i dey give una so o. as u go find out which ports pwi open for windows, me nor sabi o (i use ubuntu) THEN U KNOW THE THING CHANGES SO IT MAY THEORETICALLY WORK FOR 3O MINS THEN STOP! as for father xmas, well for one some of us no be tech pple, and we nor dey come online becos of free consultation for pple, and frankly at times it just depends on approach!! me sef don try for NL na, all the pple wey i dey try for, usually na Bleep up when i need something from dem, even common info!! even the dual core, oyb et al, why dem dey look these days? NL don change! na advert for fbt na im we dey see naw. i have even given pple tech knowhow here, only to see it blow for blow elsewhere being sold or used for props!! I nor vex but yet, nowadays i take my time and if i can spare the effort fine. if not to hell with it! @ mobinga, kudos o!!! i dey enjoy u!! na flenjor u dey o!! |
hmmn, @ bigrovar, u and this ur KDE sef, i refuse to be tempted!! ![]() u say that wallpaper is vanilla? wow thats nice!! have'nt been able to pull em gigs, maybe overnite if MTN does not go crazy again sha. want the DVD instead though i may pull the cd to satisfy my urge in the interim. all the reviews i have seen say it isnt any different from 10.04, at least for the gnome version. well thats good news for the puritanical whiners, now they can have a distro that lasts year and years like windows. for me, i love the new stuff, makes me tick. . . . . . . . pls does KDE still have all those eyecandy issues or its all solved now and i can have my cubes and all(with minimal fuss?) |
@ kollwilly, pls look thru the other folders. im sure u will agree with me that it is very strange for a home folder not to contain anything even at least the normal subfolders like documents, music, videos folders!! else, just get anor livecd, even if its anor distro!!! NB: precisely what type of install did you do? i hope its not a wubi install? then what windows os are you running? @ ebvil brain, well you are looking for free guinea pig shey? anyway am gonna try locate links now, hopefully the initial rush on the servers will have lessened, and the DVD would have been spun too. (usually its 2 weeks later for the DVD) |
@ puskin, this una crippled efbeetee nor gree me upload o, e dey fail. if u fit find the thing online, all u need na the installer, its free to download i think, na to get license be the issue. my version is smart security 4.2.40.0 |
Koolwilly:and you had me thinking the stuff was not working!!! your files are in the home folder na!!!!! home, mnt etc. check the subfolders!!!! mine looks like that becos i have my home folder on anor partition so i can always format my os without losing files!! |
cant see any screenie. and u say the livecd doesnt boot? |
