The relevant passage
consists of the following words, which are attributed to King David:

Yours, O Lord, are the greatness [gedulah; LXX megalosyne], the power [geburah; dynamis],
the glory [tiphereth; kauchema], the victory [netzach; nike], and the majesty [hôd; ischys]; for
all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom [mamlakah], O
Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him

OmoOsanyin:
INTRODUCTION

The Book of Psalms is the longest book in the Bible, and arguably the most spiritual and magical. The one hundred and fifty
Psalms have been used as the basis of amulets and for spiritual assistance for many centuries, with evidence of their use for apotropaic, healing and coercive magic dating back at least as far as the third century CE. Fragments from the Cairo Genizah and the Dead Sea Scrolls show that the Psalms were considered extremely powerful manifestations of divine power, with the incipits (opening lines) often being
used as symbols of the power contained within the whole Psalm.

Whilst I do not intend to attempt to trace the Psalms back to their roots, it is clear from their style and content that they were heavily influenced by Babylonian and
Egyptian hymns and prayers, and to an extent could thus be viewed as continuing the spiritual, magical traditions of these
cultures.

This is a logical conclusion when we recall the two periods of captivity for the Hebrews were with these two civilizations. With the cross-fertilization of ideas between the Jewish, Hellenic and Gnostic practices of the first-fourth century CE, the Psalms soon found their way into other spiritual and magical systems.

There are references in Greek texts such as the (?) which indicate the influence of the Psalms there in the fourth and fifth century CE. Thus we see fragmentary phrases which seem to be drawn from the Psalms in e.g. A tested chant of Pibechis for those possessed by daimons (PGM IV.3007-86) , including Ps 1 03 :32 (3076), Ps 1 13.3 (3055) , and Ps 1 34:7 (3066).

Instructions are also given which indicate the commanding power of the Psalms, such as: "Continue without deception, lord, the vision of every act, in accordance - with the command of the holy spirit, the angel of Phoibos, you yourself being pliable because of these songs and psalms"
(PGM III.287-88) .

Another significant feature of the Psalms is that their spiritual magic transcends language, with charms, prayers and spells
being found in numerous languages including Aramaic, English, French Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Runes and Russian.

The Psalms featured prominently in early Christian Spiritual magic. Of the ninety-three Christian amulets from the period fourth-eighth century CE written on parchment or
papyrus, "at least thirty-one of the amulets quote from the Psalms, most of which are from Psalm 90 or Psalm 1.

The first major text focusing entirely on the spiritual and magical use of the Psalms is the Hebrew (Magical Use of the Psalms) which dates back to the eighth century CE. Although there are no known copies of this text until centuries later, there are contemporary references to it which indicate an early form of the text did exist and was used at this time.

The Psalms are those of David, and for this
reason I have not included the other Psalms found in the books of Samuel and Jonah, or the additional Apocryphal Psalms found in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

By looking at the different intended purposes in the MS, you'll immediately see which uses were most popular. These
were generally mundane and connected with achieving tangible results, not at all connected with any spiritual benefits. Thus the most common uses were types of
protection (40) , healing and health issues (27) , gaining high friendships or influencing those in positions of authority (18) , improving luck or fortune ( 15), and spiritual love magic ( 14).

There were also significant numbers of charms for release from prison, or its opposite of detaining a person in prison
(9) , and to kill or destroy enemies (cool , showing that it was not all benevolent and that there was a distinctly malefic streak
in some of these charms.

The reputation of the Psalms for destruction is well documented, with examples going back to the third century
CE. A nineteenth century description of the magical contest between the druids and Saints Patrick and Benin in 433 CE in Ireland describes them using Psalms, illustrating the popularity of such ideas:

"So saying, the Chief Druid set fire to the pile, and, accompanied by two other Druids and some guards, proceeded till he came to where the saint and his assistants,
in their white robes, were chanting their psalms. 'What mean these incantations?' tried the Druid".

Verses from the Psalms are found throughout the grimoires, where the efficacy of their words was not doubted.
Verses from Psalms were chosen for use based on the appropriate nature of the words in them, and it is clear that
the whole of the Book of Psalms was viewed as a book of spiritual magical power. Indeed some sources required the reading of the whole of the Book of Psalms, with the (?) recommending they be read in full at least twice a week.

In more recent centuries the Psalms have also spread Into more contemporary traditions like Dutch Pow Wow and the Diaspora of African traditions. These uses are outside the scope of this thread, and would require substantial treatments of their own.

Of the 179 charms contained in this work, a wide range of materials were used as the basis of the charm. Paper and similar substances such as vellum and parchment
predominate (61), with a high number of glass plates (cool and cooking pots (4) being the next most common. Both of these
latter items recall the use of such items in ancient spells.

Certain substance dominate the list of consecrating ingredients, specifically water (30) and types of oil (22), as well as fragrant substances such as aloe wood (cool and mastic (15). The darker nature of some of the charms is also seen in the range of types of blood used, showing all of the classic animal bloods associated with the grimoires, such as white cockerel, black hen, bat, dove and goat. Interestingly there is also a charm which makes use of menstrual blood, which has commonly been seen as a taboo substance.

The characters used with many of the Psalms are as eclectic as the charms, being drawn from magical alphabets like Malachim Script and a mixture of hermetic and alchemical sigils.

What is clear about the uses in this extraordinary work Is that they emphasise establishing harmony and success in
the material world, and largely ignore the spiritual. The practices remind us of the need for magick to create effective change to be worthwhile, and through doing so then perhaps opening the practitioner up to a higher goal.

The Psalms contain a great deal of wisdom and beauty, and have been the basis of a huge range of charms and spells. Therein lies both their appeal and their power, which
will be evident to the Nairaland family, as they peruse through this unique thread.

Circumambulation is a cosmic law

Circumambulation is a cosmic law
Allah Almighty says, “And He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. They float, each in an orbit. (Quran 21: 33)

This glorious verse refers to a scientific fact concerning the system of the universe. Scientific discoveries have proved that we live in a huge universe that depends on revolution.

The earth revolves round the sun once a year, the moon revolves around the earth once per lunar month, and the other planets of the solar system also revolve round the sun, each in its own orbit.

Advertisements

Besides, most of these planets have moons that revolve around them, each, also, in its own orbit. Astronomers have discovered more than 60 of these moons so far.

The solar system, likewise, orbits the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. This galaxy consists of more than 130 billion stars. Galaxies, in turn, revolve round a center that only Almighty Allah knows.

The law of revolution applies also to atoms, the smallest units of elements that cannot be seen even by microscopes. An atom is composed of a nucleus whose diameter is less than a millionth of a millimeter surrounded by electrons that move round the atom in an orbit.

Since all matter in the universe, whether solid, liquid, or gas, consists of atoms, this means that the law of revolution applies to everything: stars, planets, moons, animals, plants, sand, seas, air, and so on.

This includes cells as well. The cytoplasm in the cell moves around the nucleus.

There is a common factor between the orbital movements of all these objects that their revolution is counter clockwise. Contemplating the above lines, we come to realize that revolution is a cosmic law.

With a believer’s meditation upon such a scientific fact, another image of revolution is brought to one’s mind: the pilgrims’ circumambulation of the Ka`bah, which is a basic ritual of Hajj in Islam.

Circumambulating the Ka`bah is a symbolic act of worship, whose wisdom may be hidden from some. It indicates the believers’ utter submission to Almighty Allah alone.

The pilgrims go to Hajj in response to the divine order that Prophet Abraham (a) conveyed to people.

Allah Almighty says, “And (remember) when We prepared for Abraham the place of the (holy) House, saying: Ascribe thou no thing as partner unto Me, and purify My House for those who make the round (thereof) and those who stand and those who bow and make prostration. And proclaim unto mankind the pilgrimage. They will come unto thee on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every deep ravine.” (Quran 22: 26-27)

This signifies that the Ka`bah is the spiritual centre of the believers. It refers to the close bond that should be between a believer and his Lord. A believer turns toward the Ka`bah five times a day during the prescribed ritual Prayers.

A pilgrim circumambulates the Ka`bah as if he or she is a celestial body orbiting another greater body.

Circumambulation of the Ka`bah is to be performed counter clockwise. This indicates that there is a joint factor between a pilgrim’s expressing his ultimate faith in Almighty Allah by circumambulating the Ka`bah in that way and between the cosmic law of revolution discussed above.

This indicates that there is consistency between the obligations of worship in Islam and the natural laws that govern the universe, which indicates that they all belong to only one source, that is, Almighty Allah.

This proves the truthfulness of the call of Islam that there is no god but Almighty Allah and that Islam is the true religion that provides humankind with a comprehensive view in conformity with the divine truth that is apparent in the natural laws of the universe.

Zisurrû, meaning “magic circle drawn with flour,”[1] and inscribed ZÌ-SUR-RA-a, was an ancient Mesopotamian means of delineating, purifying and protecting from evil by the enclosing of a ritual space in a circle of flour. It involved ritual drawings with a variety of powdered cereals to counter different threats and is accompanied by the gloss: SAG.BA SAG.BA, Akkadian: māmīt māmīt, the curse from a broken oath, in The Exorcists Manual, where it refers to a specific ritual on two tablets the first of which is extant.[2]

CELTIC WEDDING TRADITIONS
The Prayer of Protection: The Caim
Marc Choyt 01/31/2017

The Caim is a prayer done in a sacred circle at the altar, made with the intention of protecting the bride and groom at the time of marriage. Caims have a specific rhyme and meter that tends to act almost mystically, focusing one’s intent, making sacred space that much more sacred.

The circle, which represent wholeness, community and connection to the greater cosmos, was drawn by sword or lance around the couple. Marriage itself represents a new life. The meaning and symbolism of protective prayer within this sacred circle created by armament was essential to creating the best possible beginning for the highlander.

Marriage could also be a highly political event, particularly if it was between clans. Battle and treachery could come from any quarter. In the Marriage Ceremony in the Scottish Highlands, the groom would escort his bride to the altar with his sword available and his fighting arm free, thus the tradition of the bride on his left (as most were right handed). He could defend her against attack from other suitors. This also was the original role for the Best Man to be protector of the couple while both coming and going from the ceremony.

In modern times, the sword and the cutting of the circle have disappeared. Instead, what remains is the prayer itself. Many examples of this prayer still exist from Victorian times. Some of the most notable come from the Carmina Gadelica written by Alexander Carmichael around 1900. These come from the highlands and islands of Scotland. Several examples of Caim prayers, passed down from long ago are included in the collection. Examples:

“The compassing of God and his right hand Be upon my form and upon my frame; The compassing of the High King and the grace of the Trinity Be upon me abiding eternally, Be upon me abiding eternally. May the compassing of the Three shield me in my means, The compassing of the Three shield me this day, The compassing of the Three shield me this night From hate, from harm, from act, from ill, From hate, from harm, from act, from ill."

Circle us Lord,
Keep love within, keep hatred out.
Keep joy within, keep fear out.
Keep peace within, keep worry out.
Keep light within, keep darkness out.
May you stand in the circle with us, today and always.

Taken from St Cuthbert's website

Today, we recognize there are external energies all around us that can affect the spirit of our home and hearth. Worry and fear about jobs, family, politics, health and more can seem to bring a heaviness around us, yet if we remember that we are more than this, our hearts can be filled with joy no matter what is presenting around us, our relationships and marriage will be that much stronger and nurturing. No matter what our spiritual or religious faith is, we may certainly be able to visualize a circle around us, our home, our partners and family, that is filled with a gold light of love, peace and prosperity.

Whether or not you choose to use the Caim in either form for your wedding ceremony it will likely make the experience that much more dear and meaningful. It is very important to take the time to make your marriage vows rich in personal intent and conviction. I recommend writing your own Caim for the ceremony. You can often work it out with your wedding officiate to help draft an appropriate version for your sacred Celtic ceremony.

Examples: “The compassing of God and his right hand Be upon my form and upon my frame; The compassing of the High King and the grace of the Trinity Be upon me abiding eternally, Be upon me abiding eternally. May the compassing of the Three shield me in my means, The compassing of the Three shield me this day, The compassing of the Three shield me this night From hate, from harm, from act, from ill, From hate, from harm, from act, from ill." Circle us Lord, Keep love within, keep hatred out. Keep joy within, keep fear out. Keep peace within, keep worry out. Keep light within, keep darkness out. May you stand in the circle with us, today and always. Taken from St Cuthbert's website Today, we recognize there are external energies all around us that can affect the spirit of our home and hearth.

The original Koine Greek, according to Westcott and Hort, reads:

πασαι ουν αι γενεαι απο αβρααμ εως δαυιδ γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες και απο
δαυιδ εως της μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες και απο της
μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος εως του χριστου γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες
In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads:

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and
from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations;
and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
The World English Bible translates the passage as:

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from
David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying
away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.
