majekdom2: are you in this field of profession ... if NO , you are the one misleading and you should get your facts right before you allege false claims . for you to be chatered you have to practice with an auditing firm for a period of time ... thats work experience . it is a requirement , the audit firm has to be a registered member of ICAN also . there are professions that put less prioority on theortical knowledge but hands on exprience . the accounting profession is one of such. I will not bother arguing with you… there's no point! |
Career › Re: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by 735i(m): 12:39pm On Nov 07, 2014 |
majekdom2: OK sir..... how long does it take to be a certified chatered accountant and what are the requirement and how long does it take to have an M sc accounting. I'm sorry but; i don't understand your question. I'm only pointing out to you that an ICAN does not give you any work experience… neither does an MSc in accounting. |
Career › Re: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by 735i(m): 12:23pm On Nov 07, 2014 |
majekdom2: A masters degree does not give you any real work experience . it only gives you an edge because you have foucsed on a particular area of interest unlike the first degree that covers basically all the aspect of that profession. A masters degree gives you an opportunity to research more on a particular area . Why people rush abroad for masters in naija is because of the high rate of unemployment and to further boost their skills .... I mean networking , team work and research which the Nigerian institutions don't offer you . Majorty of the entry level jobs are minimum a first degree , in a situation where a masters degree holder is competing with a bachelor's degree holder with say some months of experience and they have equal basic performance , the recruiters may tend to go for the bachelor's degree holder . you may have great knowledge about a profession but you may loose a position to someone with experience .... experience means putting your knowledge into practice. How ever , not all professional courses are worth it .An Ican certificate gives you an edge over a masters degree in the accounting profession because the Ican leaves you with some work experience. In the engineering industry , some professional courses are not worth it , why because those courses requires some experience before you may understand those courses fully .. . on and on for different professions , the best thing is to understand you line of profession , talk to expert in that profession , they would help with the best advices. Don't mislead people. Half information is worse than no information at all. The bolded is definitely not true!!! |

justwise: Bro you are massively underestimating the value of work experience especially when you have it on your CV from both side of Atlantic.
It's not always about money Well....you may be correct.... Perhaps I do underestimate it.... DisGuy: The way i read his post, he's finished with his programme, probably has some few months left on his visa...so not necessarily staying back..just filling in with some real work experience... Fair enough.... Well...Mayo47.... Here you have it.... Arguments from both sides of the equation.... Wish you luck as you decide |

DisGuy: Valuable work experience IMO (if you can afford it) something for your CV and networking- fancy title too Ask for travel/lunch expenses if you can
it's not compulsory, He applied for it many students applying for studies in the UK especially after the cancellation of the PWS visa ARE (should be) aware of working limitations in the UK/EU He sought opinion… I gave him mine…. He already has cognate work experience from Nigeria… and its safe to assume he wants to return to Nigeria to work. If you're suggesting he stays back in the UK to do "charity" work; … Factor in the cost of living and the fact that he could actually land a paid job in Nigeria when he gets back….. well… what can i say…it's his decision to make... Was he aware it was unpaid work before he applied? If the answer to this question is yes; then id say he's made his decision already… What i'm saying in essence is; there are other factors to consider before he takes an informed decision; not just the fancy job title... |

mayo47: I got an offer for an unpaid internship in a museum as a business performance analyst, is it worth it considering my interest are in investment and banking together with few years banking experience in nigeria and am almost done with my pogram presently considering moving back in 2 weeks to start job hunting. Your feedback would highly be appreciated Give them the middle finger bro... 1.) It's unrelated to your field of specialization... 2.) It's unpaid!!! You bring thousands of pounds into their economy and a year after....they still want you to do unpaid work? Are you a philanthropist? Or you run a charity? How will you survive here with unpaid work? Even those in paid employment scratch....so how will you do it? I'm only here until I write the CFA exams in December.... I will definitely leave 2 days afterwards!! cold people, cold country |
