I very much understand your perspective, brotherman.

But should our government give considerations to this kind of an advice when the ripple effects will be hugely detrimental to the general populace, simply because they're looking to attract direct foreign investments?

And why in God's name does it feel like the foreign investors are looking to use economic policies to enslave a people in this century, simply because they're looking to turn-over massive profits upon investments?
Personally, my stance is that the primary responsibility of the Nigerian government is to Nigerians…
Not least because it is Nigerians that put them in office and handed over sovereign authority to them.

Nonetheless, if you seek foreign capital, then you have to be prepared for advice/conditions from foreigners…
The key to good governance and leadership is how to reconcile both, and while it’s not easy they “danced” for it. cool

A hike in interest rates on loans is even going to equate to a swifter surge in the inflation figures.

I cannot be a businessman who takes a loan from the bank, pays over a 20percent interest on servicing that loan and the general public will then expect me to give out my goods or services at moderate or subsidised rates. No way!

I have to make a profit to be able to service my loan, keep my business afloat and equally meet my own needs. So everything eventually trickles down to more hardship for the ordinary masses.

Sometimes these economists and analysts talk like air-headed neophytes. You people should just rub honey on the balls of ordinary Nigerian men and hang us by those balls atop ants infested trees. Because the hardship is eventually going to be felt the most by Nigerian men who are tasked with supporting themselves, their wives and kids and family members.

huh huh
This “advice” is the perspective of foreign banks and investors…
Just as you don’t want to take a loss on your bank loan, they don’t want to invest where inflation is higher than the rate of return.

If Nigeria is NOT looking for foreign investment…
No foreigner is going to be giving you “advice” on rates, or whatever else you might have to do to attract foreign investment.

Dude, personal insults and attacks is not a substitute for knowledge…
In fact such ad hominem attacks merely betray a lack of substance and a CRUDE FAMILY UPBRINGING.

America’s interest rate is only at 5% and it is struggling g. Imagine what at 25% interest rate will do to Nigeria. Nigeria need to start it’s own banking analysts and rating agencies to in turn rate all these foreign company’s for African investment. Otherwise they will soon turn around and downgrade Nigeria investments or bonds to force implementation of policies to which they can exploit the country. That is always the next move!
Nigeria wouldn’t need America’s “advice” if it is not begging for foreign investment…
If an investor is putting his money in an environment where inflation outstrips rate of return, he’s losing money already!

It was 45 billions dollars in 2019. Still was 2020. If you had used your brain while being conversant with everything instead of defending looters, you wouldn't be defending the dilapidation of 45billion dollars reserve or the use of 58 billions to print 2b notes. Won't be surprised if you're part of Emefiele thieving dumb cronies.
Using N58 billion to produce N1.06 trillion in banknotes…
Is akin to using 58 Naira to produce 1060 Naira - it’s barely 5% in costs.

I can't even comprehend the whole bullshit tbh. I already told you as at 2020, Nigeria had 45bilion in reserves which disappeared in 2023. That's one.

Two, how comprehensible do you think I understand a clown who begins to defend the use of 58billion to print 2b notes?
So, it’s now moved from 2019 to 2020?! grin
It only illustrates that foreign reserves are NOT static.

Nonetheless, enough of the beer-parlor rumors… grin
Nigeria’s foreign reserves have NOT “disappeared” (it’s currently about $35 billion).

Furthermore, you seem to be struggling with comprehension (as you implicitly admit grin)…
First, dollars and Naira are two DISTINCT currencies, and N58 billion is NOT the same as $58 billion.

Second, printing of currency is not the same as printing “Alabokun” posters… grin
Currency has many imbedded security features, and “reportedly” using N58b to produce N1trillion is not necessarily scandalous.

Using N58 billion to produce over N1 trillion is akin to using N58 to produce N1060 - ie, 5%…
Unfortunately, so many segments of the Nigerian press is rife with FUNCTIONAL ILLITERACY. SMH

And the utility of foreign reserves is that they be USED, not stored and admired.

It’s still a much better outcome than the alternative of spending dollars to produce the notes abroad.

Meanwhile, Lagos overpopulation is 10 times that of Kigali, so what are you saying? This put more pressure on Lagos' Land mass and resources, considering the land mass!
This is my point about LOW STANDARDS and lowered expectations…
Quit subscribing to a VERY LOW bar, educated/professional Lagosians are migrating to Kigali and Accra.

Lagos may have more than 10x the population of Kigali…
But it also has more than 10x the revenue and resources (human and material) of Kigali.

Like I previously noted, population is a double-edged sword…
The crucial difference lies in governance and resource management.

Yet Lagos is the 5th largest economy in Africa. Tinubu made that possible! Lagos' is still the ideal state in Nigeria which pay her pensioners and workers promptly while overseeing several laudable projects... Name which of the state is better than it? Lagos major problem is its overpopulation, considering the land mass.

Accra has only 2mil population for example.
Which is why I said that living in Lagos…
Is akin to being served RICH caviar on a bed of human feaces.

Good governance is not just about collecting revenue…
But ultimately what exactly you’re doing with such revenue.

Lagos is RICHER Rwanda and Ghana (by GDP)…
Yet it is a shithole in comparison to Kigali and Accra.

Population is a double-edged sword that works BOTH ways…
While putting pressure on infrastructure, it also leads to increased revenues.

We should collectively RAISE our standards and expectations…
And start by separating partisan politics from governance issues.

exstreve:
I asked ChatGPT to explain Interest rate hike like I'm an 8 year old to some who may not understand, I do cos I trade stocks and crypto, well, here is the answer.

Well, imagine you have a piggy bank where you save your allowance money. Every once in a while, you decide to give yourself a little treat and take out some money from your piggy bank. But what if you notice that your parents start giving you more money as your allowance?

You might think, "Yay! Now I can take out more money from my piggy bank and buy even more treats!" That's kind of what a rate hike is like.

You see, when the government or a bank decides to hike, or increase, interest rates, it means they are giving more money to people. When people have more money, they tend to spend more, just like you would if you got a bigger allowance.

But why would the government or a bank do that? Well, sometimes they want people to spend more money to help businesses grow and for the economy to become stronger. When businesses grow, they can employ more people and create more jobs.

On the other hand, if the government or a bank decides to lower, or decrease, interest rates, it means they are giving people less money. In this case, people might decide to save more money instead of spending it because they aren't getting as much from their allowance. So, it's like having a smaller allowance and not being able to buy as many treats.

Rate hikes can affect many things, like how much it costs to borrow money or get a loan. When rates go up, it might become more expensive for people to borrow money, and they might not want to spend as much or take out loans to buy big things like houses or cars.

So, similar to how your allowance can affect how much you can spend on treats, rate hikes affect how much people can spend and can also influence the overall economy.
Dude, abegi get rid of that ChatGPT immediately… grin

Interest rates are the COST of money (or capital)…
The HIGHER the rates, the COSTLIER the money, and thus the LESS folks will tend to borrow (credit cards, bank loans, etc.).

Simple economics doesn't work in Nigeria. Nigeria is a peculiar clime. Greed is a strong economic factor in Nigeria. Any economic policy in Nigeria without checkmating the greed factor always backfires.
Greed (which is essentially self-interest) is NOT necessarily bad for an economy…
Just have to properly regulate it to lead to a Mutuality of Interests, whereby societal good is a byproduct of personal greed!

Isn't Emefiele an economist, what has he achieved apart from being the worst CBN ever? You dey craze? Tinubu turned Lagos revenue around to what it is today! And yeah, Tinubu is far better as a top degree business administrator!
Although, it was NOT my point…

I am often dismayed with this fixation so many have with Lagos supposedly having “turned revenue around”. While it is generally a positive, it is NOT the primary function of government nor in fact Lagos’ primary problem (moreso if there’s any veracity in the allegations of a percentage of such revenue collections ending up in private pockets). The unfortunate reality is that, even with all of its “revenues” and supposed wealth, living in Lagos is akin to being served rich caviar on a bed of human feaces.

Sadly Lagos is a city that does NOT work - even for its own residents (many of whom have low standards and obviously limited exposure and expectations). And I say this as someone who’s lived in Lagos since moving to Nigeria and taking up Nigerian citizenship, but please don’t take my word for it. Instead, and I am not even going to compare Lagos with the world capitals that we aspire to, just visit several other AFRICAN cities (Kigali, Accra, Nairobi, Rabat and Casablanca, Addis Ababa, etc. Arguably, even Abuja and Uyo).

Meanwhile, I hope all the CBN officials are removed, including the promoted Shobinu guy. They're in affiliation with Emefiele. When corruption is already deep neck in an establishment, it would be difficult for them to stop, best way is to remove all of them and replace them.. Heck, Emefiele knew why he handed over to the Shobinu guy. All of them are in collude.

The problem of Nigeria is corruption at its peak. I hope immunity is removed from all government officials and anyone found looting is jailed!

What Mr Tatonga Rusike is saying about a hike in Nigeria's interest rate is true. If the CBN hikes interest rate, it will discourag many people from borrowing money from the banks. This is bc most of these borrowings are not for investment purposes, but fir consumption or ostensious life style that triggers a skyrocketing inflation.
Nigeria’s inflation is largely caused by high cost of imported inputs (due to the weak Naira), and not primarily because of money supply…
Dilemma is that to attract more forex to strengthen the Naira, then you have to have POSITIVE interest rates (ie, higher than inflation rate).
