ugofulfilled: Are you asking a genuine question or you're being satirical? Nigeria has one of the CHEAPEST prices of electricity in Africa (and the world)… The biggest electricity problem in Nigeria is currently one of access, due to poor transmission and distribution infrastructure (not even capacity, as current installed generation capacity is significantly underutilized and/or “l stranded”). The access issue can be addressed (in the short, medium and longer-term) by better metering and more crucially cost-reflective tariffs which would lead to better balance sheets for the discos, making it easier to attract equity capital and/or secure debt capital to invest in the rehabilitation, upgrade and modernization of distribution infrastructure, lessening commercial and technical losses and thus increasing liquidity along the entire value chain. It’s NOT rocket science really. For Nigerians to continue to Insist on “cheap” grid electricity prices and then spending a whole lot more on privately generating power is just plain FOOLISH! > |

ggoldmine: Instead of creating new education policies and reforms to mitigate the exorbitant student loans, he's trying to forgive debt. If those debts had been forgiven; What would happen to future student loans? How would financial companies recoup their losses and pay those supposed graduates working for them?
This would have been just a vicious cycle: forgive current loan debts, loan companies suffer, workers are laid off, possible rates hike for student loans, reduced student loan issuance/strict requirements, less people in school, advocacy for free/cheap/access to education, more people in school, more student loans accumulate. It never goes away. SmartPolician: Oga, you don't run finances with emotions.
That's why nothing works in Nigeria.
To maintain universities that pioneer innovative research that transforms the world, you need a lot of money.
There's a reason American universities are the best in the world and also are some of the most expensive.
Education is not cheap. If you keep having shitty education, you keep churning out unemployable graduates. That's where student loans come in.
Biden cannot wake up and forgive student loans. Things don't work like that. Perhaps he will wake up someday and tell Americans to stop paying taxes because they have been abolished. And exactly how would the government’s loan debt forgiveness affect this?! It seems you don’t even understand the program you’re criticizing… Since the idea is that the USG would REPAY those loans (that’s what the $400b is needed for). The “forgiveness” is granted to the student by the government repaying the loans instead… Lifting the considerable BURDEN of low- and middle-class youth starting off life with a HUGE debt overhang. PS: Btw, a massive amount of research in US universities are fund by GOVERNMENT grants ($49 billion of FREE cash in 2021)!> |

TemplarLandry: Byeden's pseudo voters appeasement scheme blocked. Niice! SmartPolician: America is a country where laws work! If Biden wants a cheap way to win his re-election bid, he should use his money to pay the student loans. That's if he has anything close to that.
But then, if Americans, who can easily get jobs after college, are unable to repay their student loans, is it in Nigeria where a student cannot get a decent job after 5 years that people can pay their student loans? Spoken like folks who do not see education as a PUBLIC good or asset… That’s why I consistently contend that most Nigerians mirror (and DESERVE) their rulers. Meanwhile, not a surprising decision from a PARTISAN court… It’s what the uneducated yahoos that constitute much of the Republican base wanted. > |

> For all of the woefulness of Nigeria…
The US student loan debacle should answer those Nigerians (especially doctors) who “japa” and complain that Nigeria never did anything for them - while their American colleagues are carrying anywhere from $250K to over $1m in student loan debt.
Reality is that education is an “investment” that a nation or society makes in its citizenry, with the expectation of a “return” therefrom whereupon those educated citizens work to make the nation or society even better than they met it.
Of course, that’s not the only investment the state has to make (security, good governance, etc., are also necessary), but ultimately Nigeria’s condition comes down to the culmination of the various actions (by commission or omission) of ALL NIGERIANS! > |
