The one thing that Obama did that was moronic...

For better or worse, 1 out of every 7 black persons is Nigerian (used to 1 out of every 5). For the first-ever US president of African/black descent to symbolically “overlook” those number of siblings is obtuse. The better thing is to show up and tell them bitter truths. That’s what FAMILY does!

Nonesense! Rubbish comment! That what we only do in Nigeria, reading toomuch of paper that do not relate reality on ground. Nigeria is all you said and a country like Congo is highly respected than Nigeria. Nigeria is biggest economy in Africa and hunger is killing her larger population. My friend stop reading all our stupid newspappers and begin to see the realities. Nigerian is really suffering and are the most suffering people in the whole world
The irony in your comment is bringing up DR Congo, which is a MESS and was heavily criticized by the US State Dept’s human rights report, and who’s last presidential elections was described by the the UK’s Guardian (and also by Mo Ibrahim) as “a defeat of democracy”.

Meanwhile, you seem confused by the FACTUAL reality that Nigeria could be the BIGGEST economy in Africa (and by far btw), while simultaneously having a lot of poor people, as if that is somehow mutually exclusive - especially when Nigeria also have by far Africa’s BIGGEST population. It’s simple arithmetics. Even China, likely to become the world’s biggest economy in our lifetime, had almost 500 million people living in poverty in the early 2000s (that’s 300 million more poor folks than the entire population of Nigeria, albeit with 6 times the population of Nigeria). In fact, in the richest-ever nation in human history, the US, about 40 million people live in poverty (2017 US Census data). The biggest problem in Nigeria is the INEQUALITY in the distribution of wealth, and not the size of the economy itself.

Meanwhile, Nigeria banks (and Dangote) continue to spread out throughout Africa (how many Kenyan or Congolese banks are in Nigeria?), while Nigeria continues to increase it CULTURAL dominance of sub-Saharan Africa through its music, movies and fashion. Get out more dude! SMH

He has a purpose for calling those people and the discussion might be on something that needs to be tackle urgently, again looking at the proximity of Kenya to Congo one might say it's more of Security or economic discussion and south africa been a regional power within that axis concludes and complete that equation.
Spot on!
DR Congo is a MESS, and nobody would be calling to celebrate its situation (nor what the UK’s Guardian called “a defeat of democracy”).

South Africa is the anchor and pillar of Africa.

Kenya is now the silicon valley of Africa .

Next Biden will call Ghana and other African giants like Rwanda and Angola..

Nigeria has nothing to offer , the
more reason the world powers always faces those with ideas and advancement.

It took painful begging before Covid-19 vaccine cancelled for Nigeria and given to other African nations without plea to even reach Nigeria and just 4 million doses...
RUBBISH! Nigeria is the tech hub of Africa...
And Nigeria has attracted more tech investment capital over the last few years than any other African nation.

With all of Nigeria’s issues, it is still the BIGGEST economy in Africa (and Nigeria’s GDP is probably grossly UNDERCOUNTED as much of the huge informal sector, which is even bigger than the formal economy, is mostly not captured by official data), and a top trading partner in Africa for the US, the UK, China and the EU. Anyone underestimating the importance of Nigeria in Africa is (to be brutally honest) CLUELESS!

If the Nigerian people can push harder, this might be the time to wrench out some concessions from the corrupt ruling elite in this country. At the moment, there are lots of infighting, religious and ethnic tensions, country is running out of cash, Endsars massacres have allienated the present government from a lot of her western supporters and more dangerously, the security agencies are starting to struggle to keep peace in multiple fronts as Buharis maladministration starts all sorts of fires at every corner... Our tormentors are cornered and ostracized but the people are yet to understand this..

You don't understand diplomacy. Sovereign does not mean isolation. No nation can stand alone, even strong-head stubborn North Korea can't. If they can stand alone, they won't care about sanctions.

Do you know the call can make our currency stronger for a while cos speculators will start thinking these guys might strike some deals that will influence more demand for Naira? Most times, currency strength is moved by speculations more than realities.
Do you know the call can attract investors?
There is more to this. Ordinary citizens with zero diplomacies and economics knowledge think it's just a call. It is not just a call.
Heck no, it cannot.
Only the fundamentals of your economy and economic policy can influence your currency’s value.

Please let’s NOT get too carried away with ephemeral things...
A call from a new US President may be good SYMBOLISM, but it is not really much more than that.

People! Enough already with the “innocent” or “poor” gateman babble...
Unless some of you were involved, the reality is that none of us knows if he was criminally culpable or not.

Some of you make it sound as if “poor” people don’t commit crimes...
Yet the same people will turn around to blame poverty in the land for increased criminality.

SAD reality in Nigeria is that virtually everyone is capable of criminality given enough incentive and opportunity...
Most Nigerians know (or have heard) of instances where gatemen have colluded with robbers or even killed oga/madam themselves.

Poverty neither precludes criminality nor is it an immunity thereto...
Let the police do their job (although the investigatory track record of Nigeria police is dodgy), and hopefully unravel the facts.

Point of correction, we don't know what the divorce is about, my comment was in response to someone saying no matter what, a man has no right to throw the woman out. Whether it is attempted murder or the man found out the kids are not his, we can't rule out anything! Furthermore, some men actually built their houses and wealth before marriage, most are so dumb not to sign a prenup and in America they lose their property automatically in most states. My point remains true, we don't have enough information on this particular case to form an informed opinion, for a man to behave like this after 35 years of marriage, something big definitely happened!

We are arguing A, you're talking about B! Get out of here with the nonsense you just typed, generalization and strawman rhetoric should be left to those who don't know anything about the western world. I have been living and working in the USA for over a decade and my father for over 3 decades, if you're opportuned to reside in Chicago or Bronx NY, you'll see just how much lives are not really valued when it comes to gun violence. The problem with people like you is that you've developed this idea in your head that those in Africa are barbarians while those abroad are the only sane ones, this type of reasoning assumes the Western world is in unision and everyone behaves the same way, this is pure horseshit!

Now back to topic, you assume under any circumstances a man must part with his property and assets when it comes to a divorce even if the reason was attempted murder, you believe a man is not entitled to his house after working all his life to build it but must give it up because he's the stronger sex and his needs are far less than that of a woman. This reasoning can only make sense in societies where men have been relegated to an afterthought, it's like asking a rape victim to allow visitation rights for the rapist to see his son or daughter. I'm not going to argue with you about which world is better because we clearly know there's no competition but becareful about generalization, it is the trait of lazy minded individuals who would rather use semantics than actual logic to push home their point.
Agree with your first paragraph...
Totally disagree with the second.

For starters, dude did NOT build the house alone...
While he was working at the office, someone was working just as hard at home.

Meanwhile, you complain about Strawman Arguments, but indulge in it...
Their divorce is not the result of attempted murder, so what’s the relevance?

Since the kids have apparently left the house...
It should be sold and the proceeds split, or the crude dude can buy her out.

Sadly a lot of women relax after marriage and become complacent. They believe they have financial security especially after having kids.

One of the biggest disservice a woman can do to herself is being 100% dependent on a man, especially one that has zero respect for her. In this woman's case now, she has been married for almost 4 decades to a man with six kids. I'm sure in all those 39 years, he must have constantly cheated on her but she kept consoling herself that as long as they're outside and she's the recognized wife, she's ok. Now she has been thrown out of the home she has kept for almost 4 decades, where does she start from?

This should be an eye opener for single ladies not to go into marriage to be a dependant but they no go hear word.
When even women begin to spout such NONSENSE then Nigerian ‘culture’ will remain sexist...
A woman who has supported a man for 40 years has EARNED half of everything acquired in those 40 years! PERIODT!

FamilyRe: Is It Wrong To Raise An African Child The British Or American Way? by 9jaRealist: 3:15am On Mar 02, 2021
ratiken:
Please can you in concise words define the mainstream Nigeria culture oflof today?

If you objectively answer this question, you will understand how bad things have deteriorated and I feel sad that Nigerians have refused to face the issue to address it.

I am not making a case for the western culture but the current mainstream value system entrenched in the sociocultural system in Nigeria is almost worse than the west. Because hypocrisy is entrenched, we can't speak out.

I grew up in a society where neighbours and relatives will reprimand me if I am naughty even before my parents return... but that communal living have since left Naija

I grew up in a Nigeria where 419 was a trade for old criminals whom the society frowned at. Today, high school students are into Internet fraud and so called yahoo boys are the big boys of the hood. The Nigerian society hypocritically celebrate them.

Growing up, cheating someone in business will have the society frowning at you. Today, its normal to cheat someone in business and be referred to as the sharp guy. The average Nigerian you engage in trade or business is out to cheat you if you lose your guard

Growing up, prostitution was in brothels and men who patronise prostitutes sneak in and out to avoid the societal label. Today, girls less than 15 have started plying their trade online. Runs is the real deal and you are slow if you aint part of the game. Even the society acknowledges that a lady need to sleep with politicians to buy a decent car or build a house. Sit back and imagine the impact of these on the psyche of the girl child.

Our political leadership are offshoots of our societal values. We now export fraud and prostitution.

Bandits, bokoharam, herdsmen murdering hundreds, raping and burning settlements are also Nigerians.... we should not ever forget that.

Infact, the Nigerians who make us proud were either not trained in Nigeria or were trained in Nigeria but plying their trade abroad (and their kids are not been trained here)

I can write multi pages on this. The value system of the supposed Nigerian system is badly eroded almost beyond redemption.

The only redeemable part of the Nigerian culture resides in the hands of parents who are determined to train their kid the right way and make the sacrifice to achieve such. And this can be achieved both in Nigeria, US or any part of the world.

Anyone who attempts to allow the Nigerian society train their kids like we grew up in the 70s or 80s will have a very terrible outcome
Nigerian culture is NOT monolithic (after all, it’s a hodge podge of over 200 ethnicities).
As already acknowledged, culture changes, but what you describing is NOT necessarily culture.

As I mentioned elsewhere on this thread, it is NOT mere coincidence that Nigerians and Nigerian-Americans in the US (and even to some degree, in the UK) overachieve the indigenous population. Why don’t those Nigerians (even the ones who arrived as adults or recently) cheat, defraud and prostitute themselves to the extent that people perceive to be prevalent in Nigerian urban society (of course there will always be outliers and exceptions)? Why do you think Nigerians athletes in the US also always seem to do well academically (when they clearly do not NEED to) and are almost always universally described as well-behaved and respectful? Why do think most other immigrant groups in the US have not replicated the same level of general success, if the X factor is the US rather than an underlying cultural value system? The reality is that while some successful Nigerians unfortunately think they have done so inspite of Nigeria, truth is they have done so precisely because they’re Nigerian!

Anyway, as previously noted, it’s always good counsel to be wary of the dangers of the single narrative. Life/culture is complicated.
