When designing wall partitions, the following are normally put into consideration. 1. Security, flexibility, aesthetics, sound proof and economy.

When using polystyrene as partition wall, the external walls can be our conventional brick or block while all the internals walls can be polystyrene walls.

I think most polystyrene walls are sound proof, sound transfer will not be a problem

That is a very interesting question. The problem is that these materials are not still readily available or the cost is not as cheap as it should be to help solve massive housing deficit in Nigeria.

We still problem of lack adequate knowledge and know how of how to use these materials. Lots still needed to be done to make these materials readily available to the general population.

Alternative like stabilized brick, bamboo board etc can also help drive down cost of building construction.

Crayford is a South East London suburb. Just yesterday a burst water main overnight caused flooding chaos across parts of Crayford. Water leaked into an underground car park and caused polystyrene insulation to lift the road surface by 4ft; this led to cars being crushed against the ceiling and has left scores of motorists unable to retrieve vehicles. The burst water main in Crayford caused polystyrene insulation under Townhill Square car park road surface to expand and rise by around four feet, forcing the vehicles trapped inside upwards into the roof. Now what got me is not the flooding per se but the fact that polystyrene was used for "decking" (concrete slab) and for foundation in the underground car park. I have visited that car park in the past but I didn't know that the parking bay was embedded in polystyrene. All they did was stacked the polystyrene and tarmacked over it literately. This held until the water burst. This shows that with creative civil engineering polystyrene may be deployed for foundation (?) and decking (?) in our civil build at home to reduce cost or weight ?

Abdulwastecx has been the champion on adopting polystyrene and I must confess I'm looking into polystyrene deployment in Abuja for temporary accommodation as partitioning walls, but the big question is: if yawa gas in any form as the pix show, will the polystyrene stand the test? This includes polystyrene parapet........Abdulwastecx come answer your father's name.

Good question sir, I will try do some justice to the best of my ability.

To start with, polystyrene in most cases is a non structural form that can be use to reduce weight and cost of structural members like slab, portion walls, roof and concrete fascia ( from a structural perspective). It can be use for non structural form like ceiling, window hood and so many other design.

Can polystyrene be use for foundation? Absolutely yes... Polystyrene can be use for ribbed or waffle foundation as a replacement of concrete volume where a series of rib beam are introduced both ways (waffle) or one way (ribbed slab).

Can polystyrene be use for suspended slab? It can also work like in the foundation as ribbed and waffle slab.

Can it be use as a partition materials? Yes, it can be use as a partition wall and have a great advantage of lightness and faster mode of installation. It made it possible to have a more flexible structural layout because portion load will be negligible. It also make it possible to reduce beam thickness and numbers because lesser load is transmitted.

I don't think you have a very clear understanding about human population distribution. Dark skin people/black people are distributed all over places closer to the equator such as Africa, Australia sub continent, Indians sub continent, Oceania etc. The indigenous inhabitants of all these places were dark skin people before immigration and all sort of races mixing.

North Africa was home to dark skin people /black people before different European, Arab and middle eastern group inter married or mixed with them and that is why Egypt, Algeria and other northern African nations have diverse skin torn and visible nigroid features.

Well I wouldnt say anything yet on other quotes from this your builder but it is either you mistyped the cost of block levelling @ 125,000 or he may be refering to something else. How can he qoute 240k for blockwork from DPC to Lintel as at No. 7 then charge 125k for levelling as in No. 9 perhaps after the lintel except if he is talking of chaining after last blocks which usually is between 2-3 blocks after lintel depending on structural specifications. If he is talking of just block levelling, the quote didnt make sense @125k given his quote 9 of 240k from DPC to lintel which is usually between 9-12 blocks again depending on design.

Because hypothetically, assumming from DPC to lintel for your building is 10coaches, it then means that his qoute for each coach at that stage round the house is 24K per coach. If that is the case, then a 2or3 block leveling after lintel would workout at either 48 or 72k, which either way is far below the 125k he qouted.
If you happen to find any spurious quote on a qoutation, you will better be on the side of caution as other items qouted are most probably spurious too.

Again if variations are above 5-10% margin from the ordinary, accepting and qualifying the value and integrity of the quote is subjective but for me I wouldn't trust such builder and most likely not accept the quote.
I didnt comment on blockwork for foundation as at No.4 @180k because using the above calculations 4 or 5coaches from foundation would be between 96 and 120k respectively. For most bungalows 4coaches is ideal except if your site is around the Tomopolo's Niger Delta!!

The 5-10% margin may it be correct sir... This because, between DPC to lintel level you have opening like doors, Windows and arch as a result you may have a great reduction in area within that level but after the lintel you don't have any openings.

Block work from lintel to roof level so always higher than equal area block work between dpc and lintel level because if openings

The problem with Nigeria is we are too lazy to see the bigger picture. Government run industries create mediocrity, nepotism and corruption. Over the year we have four refineries that can't produce up to 20% of our domestic consumption of refine fuel after billions of US dollars had gone into maintenance, salary and allowances (all these money which are stolen by the way).

We have government establishment that are suppose to be a source of revenue generator that have turned into a source of large outlay of recurrent expenditure. Selling off all these asset we make better sense and will reduce the burden on government to developed more infrastructures

Over the year, we spend government resources to build steel plant, refineries and different type of industry that put in place to generate wealth, create employment opportunities, diversify out economy and industrialized our great nation but we haven't been able to achieve much in all these respect because of corruption, nepotism and instability. All these point to the fact that government have no business doing business, we will be better off if all these asset are transferred to the private sector, people can make profile put of them
