I traveled home for two weeks, when i returned back to port Harcourt, the first floor block work had already been completed by my colleague (Arc. Emanuel).

i personally supervised these aspect of the job.

for the form work, here is how arrived at the bill of quantity:

Area of deck to covered = 160m2
assuming a soft apu plank of 25 x 300 x 3300mm ( 1''x12''x11'). Note that the length of the plank is 3600mm (12')
Area per plank = 0.3 x 3.3 = 0.99m2

No of planks required for the suffice = 160/0.99 =162planks
allowing for 25% allowance due to off cute and wastage = 0.25 x 162 = 203 planks

No of planks for the floor beams
beam along x-axis = 14 x 4 =56m2
beam along y- axis = 13x4 52m2
since the beam will required boarding from both side = (( 56 + 52) x 2 x 0.3))/(0.3 x 3.3) = 65 planks
allowance for wastage and off cute = 1.25 x 65 = 82 planks

No of planks required for the column;
Note since the block was built before the column was cast, i will only need to provide two boarding per column
no of columns = 19
height of column from ground level ( minus starter bar/column) = 3.15m
Area of column = 2x3.15x0.3x19 = 35.91m2
No of planks required = 35.91/0.99 = 36 planks
Allowance of 25% = 1.25 x 36 = 45 planks.

No of planks required for slab side ( thickness of 150mm)
Height of outside board = 300+150 = 450mm (using 600mm for convenience and easy brazing)
outer perimeter = (13x2) + (14x2) = 54 x 2 = 108m2
Area of boarding = 108/0.99 = 110 planks

No of planks for stair case = 20 planls
Summary of plank
Deck = 203 planks
beam = 82 planks
column =45 planks
External boarding/stair case =130planks
= 460planks

excellence analysis... But flat roof in tropical Southern part of Nigeria with high rainfal is undesirable as result of the following.
1. Low angled to flat roof tends to slow down water flow and leads to water stagnation which causes leakage.
2. we tends to build our roof truss wood ( as as the cheaper substitute because of our poor industrial production of steel). building flat roof with wood becomes problematic as the span get bigger which leads to sagging of rafter or tie beam as the roof age.
3. wind speed render the roof vulnerability at the elevated level unless parapet is built.

I'm of the opinion that bamboo need to be used more extensively here in Nigeria. it can solve most of our buiolding problem of his versatility and its fast growth rate.

Nigeria with a housing demand of about 20 million in a country with per capital of $3000. bamboo and other cheap building materials will do it

I wish I was interested in buildings then, I would have had many pictures to show.. But Yes, we need to explore more alternatives and Mr. CityEng has been saying this in every of his posts.

I am looking at very cheap pre fab houses

A combination of architecture, civil engineering and quantity surveying will do the magic. I'm learning so many 3 D archi softwares and some project management/costing to complement my primary structural/civil engineering knowledge

I'm of the view that people need to build more with bamboo wood, polystyrene materials and steel. civil/building engineering need to be involved more than the conventional method of cement and gravel.

people are building with bamboo in tropical third world countries in central and south America countries like Colombia, peru and brazil. some of these design are out of the box thinking and technical know how.

You will love some of these design because they combined aesthetics, structural integrity and most importantly COST
