You are on point sir. Architect, engineer and Qs, they all have their own important role and they have one thing in common...they can both supervise a construction.
One4me:
Very true, we seem to underestimate the value of QS!
I think l will trust a Quantity Surveyor more, to supervise my building project (as long as l have a competent Builder), than employ an Engineer for Supervision.
Unlike an Engineer, he will monitor the Cost and Material usage, due to his knowledge of material costing and can quickly advise where shortages or excesses might occur and the Builder can double as the Engineer, especially in these days when Architects are also parading as Engineers and Builders.
My opinion, #NotABibelli

It usually per sqm they charge. Also ask the installer to explain different methods of constriction to you, I visit a friend last month, I notices there is this awful sound from the tiles while walking on it. I believed its installation fault which might leads to the tiles breaking if Carr is not taking.

Bad eggs has nullify the good ones! Cheat everywhere, all measurement has been tampered with.
kopell:
Bros is not funny, no matter how smart one think he is they will find way to cheat and rob you. Let's educate ourselves from experience. Firstly, most of those truck bunk bucket has been modified by reconstructing the bunk to carry less of the product. secondly, even if it is loaded you can never be sure of the loaded quantity. Even those that show you scale receipt that the quantity is right you'll be surprise that those scales has been adjusted before weighing. Another observation is the size of the granites, you get a little more with smaller sizes but you may end up using more in construction at the same time. If engineer in charge can agree to mix small and bigger granites to help owners save money. In terms of sand it's better to always buy dry ones otherwise you end up spending more money. For those of us that are counting tire to determine the load size from the pervious contributors on this same topic, you can see it's a complete waste of time. The cheating is across the board from electric cables to wood suppliers, roofers, tilers, even laborers inflate their prices that you an never image. May God help us from these cheaters.

Hi Sir, I want to install concertina on my fence. The land size is 100 by 60. Please, at what stage would the plates be installed? Is it when the guys doing the artworks are working on the fence or they would be laid by the installer?
Also, what would be the estimate for the materials and cost of installation, if you'll be handling the job (on a tight budget) ?
Site is in Abeokuta.

Short conversation between me and a client...
Mr. A: hello
Me: hi
Mr. A: how much do you charge electric fence-wire per meter
Me: we charge #2,500/meter, for a plot of land. The higher the plot the lower the price sir.
Mr. A: that is expensive man!
Me: well, that is the normal price sir. Value for your money is assured.
Mr. A: but someone gave me #2,200, why is your price different?
Me: I won't like to spoil the person's market sir smiley, but I can a sure you will pay more than #2,500 on the long run.
Mr. A: how do you mean!?
Me: in this our work, it is easy to get cheaper price(from a quake) but you will have to pay more on the long run.
Me: hello sir
Mr. A:...(no response)

...after 2 weeks
Mr. A: hello bro
Me: hi
Mr. A: pls when will you have time to come to my site at Abeokuta?
Me: to do what sir?
Mr. A: ...I..I need you to help me fix the energizer and there is a part we need you to verify
Me: energizer? Verify? I don't get you sir
Mr. A: actually, the guy that did the work....(story)
Me: sir, at Bolbaz home tech., we don't continue work from where someone else stoped because from experience work like that give more headache that starting afresh! I am sorry sir.
Mr. A: how much do you want to take? I need it to be fix asap! My house was bursted yesterday due to the bad work done by the guy I called!
Me: OK sir, can you pay #2,000/meter?(after all materials has been installed smiley)
...after long discussion, he agreed to pay #120,000 for correction undecided

Moral lesson: always consult professional in your dealings! If you fail to consult professional, you will pay more on the long run. Quarks may charge less but the problem is much!

Ahah! That is lack of proper supervision! We need to understand we need competent professionals(architect/engineer) on site to ensure good result, the cost of not employing professionals on site is more expensive on the long run.

Valid point! angry
n3xt:
While we wait for experts, here are the possible cause of the failure:

- Beam Connection
- Inadequate support underneath the slab
- Concentrating the poker vibrator for too long in a particular section.
- Bad Formwork/Carpentary Work

That’s all I can think of right now. I believe there could be other reasons.

Materials delivered and to be install on Monday 26/10/2020
Abolarin91:
Good morning sir...
The Y-angle iron is better to be installed when the coping(fence cover) is going on, the installer can also lay it but it would require breaking of the coping which may leads to minor crack if the block is not strong enough.

Estimate of materials and installation:
100ft by 60ft(97.5 meter)
A roll of concertina is 15meter(factory packed)
97.5meter÷15meter=7, therefore, you will need 7 rolls of the concertina.
1 roll is #12,000; #12,000×7=#84,000
You will also need 36 Y-angle iron(#300×36=#10,800)
Installation; #15,000
Total cost: #109,000.

Don't leave any window without burglary, you can do a burglary that is openable probably in an enclose room that all members of the house can have access to. I think @Next once came up with an idea of openable burglary some time ago(check some pages of this thread).

In the house I live, we didn't put burglary in two bathroom and that is the place pilfer came through two days ago.

Meanwhile, you should also secure your fence with electric fence-wire or razor wire(barb wire). You can check my signature for contact and my thread to get more info.

Good!

It’s better to protest all those illegal payments made to government.

If you don’t know your right in this country, you’d be taken for a ride.

I installed a 300Kva transformer early this year for a hall with 15 units of 3hp AC and 22 units of 2hp split unit AC. When we got the first bill, it was just #11,300
A friend saw this asked me “How did you do it? Who helped you?” My response was “If you don’t know your right, they’ll shove anything down your throat in this country.”

I actually applied for O meter to be installed with the Transformer. That way I get billed for my direct consumption and not the size of my project.

Oops! Nigeria in soup if this continue! God forbid more building collapse sad
Badgers14:
I just saw this requirement for building approval in one of my what's app groups...

I find it very disturbing, often times we see building collapsing etc.. the officials are just after the money, not necessarily giving a darn about the building itself..

Although I am a certified Nairaland trained Engineer but how can one in good conscience ask for a certificate of fitness, site analysis report, letter of structural fitness for a building that have not been built?

You pay registration fee, then automation fee, then application fee and processing fee for the same building plan... plus inspection fee and approval fees angry angry
