Social media went into a frenzy sometime in May over the death sentence passed on 27-year-old Meriam Ibrahim who was accused of apostasy and adultery which led to an international outcry and eventually she was freed.

From Ibrahim’s situation, the hard and sad truth is that we do not live in a world of religious freedom.

In some parts of the world, converting from one religion to another which is not recognised by that country could mean segregation, barred from taking part in social activities and sometimes, death.

According to AFK Insider, There are some countries in the world where your religion could mean a death penalty and here are 10 of them:

Afghanistan: In March 2006, Abdul Rahman, an Afghan citizen, converted to Christianity from Islam, and was facing the death penalty on an apostasy charge. Because the case drew international attention and criticism, it was eventually dropped on technical grounds after presidential intervention, but others have not been so lucky. Other converts were arrested throughout the past decade and their sentences have not been made public, assuming the worst.

Iran: According to intelligence reports, Iran death squads have been employed against those who renounced Islam, either for Christianity or a more neutral or atheist practice. As recently as 2008, 15 ex-Muslims who have since converted to Christianity were charged with apostasy and are still being held to determine their fate. Other known cases, such as Youcef Nadarkhani, have already been sentenced to death, among others.

Egypt: Due to the uncertain nature of the Egyptian government, it is unclear which laws exactly are being enforced, and if the government itself or the population at large is behind all arrests and sentencing. But in 2006, members of parliament expressed the opinion that all members of the Bahá’í Faith were infidels, and should be killed on the spot. Similarly, a 2010 poll showed that 84 percent of Egyptians who identified as Muslim believed that anybody who renounced Islam in the country should be executed.

Maldives: Freedom of religion in the Maldives is extremely limited, as Islam is the recognized state religion and few others are tolerated. In 2010, philosophy student Mohamed Nazim openly declared that his studies had forced him to renounce Islam and identify instead as atheist. After his immediate arrest and subsequent death sentence, he publicly reverted to Islam to avoid that fate.

Pakistan: The death penalty may be issued in Pakistan for merely publicly denouncing any aspect of the Islam. Speaking in opposition to Islam, publishing material that attacks the prophets, desecrating the Quran, or speaking out against Muhammad may all be punishable by life imprisonment or death. Any actions made that are seen as even attempting to influence somebody else’s commitment to Islam are also punishable by extreme prison sentences.

Saudi Arabia: In Saudi Arabia, one is considered Muslim whether or not he/she identifies as such; children born to Muslim fathers are by law deemed Muslim. Therefore, anybody who converts from Islam to another religion, or denounces Islam in any way, is considered to have committed apostasy and could be sentenced to death. Speaking out against Sunni Islam in any sense is also punishable by death.

Mauritania: Proselytizers in Mauritania face a serious danger. While there is no direct law that bans non-Muslims from proselytizing within the country’s borders, many laws prohibit material from being distributed and severely restrict the right to free speech regarding the topic. Therefore, anybody who violates these rules may be facing extreme punishment, and proselytizers have been attacked by extremists operating outside of the government’s authority.

Yemen: In Yemen, as in other Islamic countries, the act of denouncing Islam is not just seen as a crime in itself, but as an attack against the state and an act of undermining the government. For instance, in 2006, two imams were sentenced to death for peacefully opposing certain faith-based groups. The president eventually pardoned them after public criticism, but the case was only one among many at that time.

Kuwait: While the country openly states that religious freedom exists within its borders, aspects of Shariah law make this difficult to believe. Several individuals have been sentenced to time in prison for denouncing or converting from Islam, and the parliament voted in 2012 to make blasphemy punishable by death for Muslims. Though the Council of Ministers rejected this amendment to the criminal code, it is still debated in government offices.

Bangladesh: Bangladesh’s nearly 90-percent Islamic majority makes it difficult for other minority groups, who often feel ostracized. While there is no government enforcement of capital punishment for not abiding by Islam, there have been many instances of extremist violence against non-Muslims that were not tried by the courts. There are also instances of societal abuses against minorities, who are shut out of public office, employment opportunities, and more.

In July, I had a meeting in Aba so I had to fly in thru' PH since Abia State still doesn't have an airport. I had already arranged a private ride to get me to my final destination since I wasn't familiar with the route(s).

Background

My name is Caroline Sam but my stage name is Maheeda. I am an orphan. I really did not know my mother and I never met my father. My mother died and I was all alone. Me and music

I have always loved music and attention. I started about ten years ago. I don’t have any albums yet but I have quite a number of singles. All I can say is that the way I want to do my thing is not acceptable in Nigeria. It has been hard and it’s still hard for me to achieve. Currently, I am in Nigeria to spend Christmas and I am also seizing the opportunity to shoot a video for my single, ‘Naija bad girl’. Apart from music, I am also a model and acting is another passion of mine.

It is deliberate. I know what I am doing. The pictures are not targeted at anything. It is all about attention and there is no mistake about it. This business of music is called showbusiness and I am convinced I am on the right track. I owe no apologies. I just realised this way will be a faster hit than any other way. In this life, everybody gets criticised whether you do good or bad. I have read and heard so much about me that I am now used to it. Thanks to them, they have helped me develop a thick skin.

Relationship

I am married and my husband is Dutch. What I am doing is not alien to him or his family and he understands. I met him at a bar when he just came to Nigeria. We are happily married. Even before we got married, he understood my kind of person. He was aware of my vision. He has always been supportive. He just laughs whenever he comes across any of my pictures. It’s in Africa that we attach much importance to such things and consider it sacrilegious.

My daughter can’t do this

I am 31 and I had my daughter when I was 17. I do not think this is going to affect her in any way. If my mother did something like this; there is no way it would have affected me. My daughter is not even aware these nude pictures exist even though she has seen pictures of me in bikini. She is not even allowed access to the social media. Even if she gets to view them eventually, it’s not going to mean anything to her because she has the European mentality. When my daughter is 18, then she can decide what she wants. Currently, she is under my care and I won’t let her do what I am doing.

So far, it has worked and it’s still working. As you can see, there’s so much attention on me. All of a sudden, people want to listen to my old singles and are looking forward to my debut album.

Friendship

I have quite a few of them. Don Jazzy is my friend, Olamide and Phyno just to mention but a few. Gospel artistes? No, but I became a born-again Christian and decided that I wanted to continue with secular music. Whether people accept it or not, I am a born-again Christian and that is why I describe my music as honest music. I am not perfect but I’m just living my life in the best possible way.

Style

I like to feel comfortable. When I dress, I want to be me not caring what the next person thinks. I also like to go to the gym to keep fit. When you are fit, clothes look fabulous on you.

Music stars, Kelly Handsome and M.I who have been engaged in a five-year old dispute performed together on stage during the CARNIRIV festival late last year.

According to reports, Kelly Handsome reached out to M.I and made peace with him. You will recall that trouble started between the duo when Kelly Handsome dissed rapper M.I in one of his tracks ‘Maga don pay’ several years ago.

This resulted in an exchange of hate tracks between Kelly and M.I. The two musicians are now friends!

Despite the privatization of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) assets, the Federal Ministry of Power has budgeted N62,449,100,632 to keep it afloat in 2014. This is just N11,813,279,26 less than the 2013 budget allocation.

A breakdown of this year’s budget estimation shows that the bulk of the budget, about N24,912,292,467, would be allocated to improving the services of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), although it was higher with N33,849.634 in the previous year.

The privatization of PHCN has cut down the salaries and allowances of about 48,000 workers out of the ministry’s treasury. The least amount of N1,142,500.000 was allocated to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company Plc (NBET).

Recall that the federal government has a standing contract with Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) of Canada to improve the transmission section of the power industry within four years and then handover to their Nigerian counterpart. Equally, NBET was established for market capitalization to provide a financial backup to the generation companies in the current privatized electricity market.

In the budget obtained from the Budget Office, about N74,262,379.894 was appropriated for the ministry in 2013, the year in which it intensified and completed its privatization exercise under the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo.

The power sector regulator, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has an allocation of N1,750,000,000 to run its operational and regulatory activities for the year. Its function remains the formulation of effective regulatory policies and monitoring of the privatized electricity market.

The recent of such was its approval of the interim rule which guides the new Distribution companies (Discos) and Generation companies (Gencos) on doing business in the market testing period. It will also advise the Minister of Power to declare the Transitional Electricity Market (TEM) by March when the private-styled power sector would have been stable and improved.

Meanwhile, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) which remains a critical area has gotten N8,202,679,166 which is N1,746,461,872 less than last year’s allocation.

Experts attributed this to the likely shift in the activities of the ministry to alternative rural electrification project  under the new Operation Light Up Rural Nigeria and the privatization of the Discos which is expected to take care of electricity infrastructure expansion.

In the meantime, subscription of newspapers, magazines and periodicals would be gulping about N4,564,348 in the year from the total allocation of N21,854,840,390 to the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The amount is said to be less than its allocation of N5,707,430 in the 2013 budget.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, Paul Walker's younger brother has been approached to fill in for his brother to film the final scenes of "Fast & The Furious 7." The 40-year-old star was on a break from filming when he died in a fiery car wreck two weeks ago.

Production on the film was immediately shut down and Universal Pictures announced that they were "dedicated to providing support to Paul's immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious family of cast, crew and filmmakers."

However the Daily Mail reports that the producers have been involved in numerous meetings to decide the best way to finish the film. "They soon realized they needed someone who looked like Paul to finish the movie and that's when they approached his nearly identical brother, Cody," a source close to production told the British newspaper.

Cody Walker, 25, is a stunt man who lives in Oregon but has been staying in Los Angeles to help his mother since his brother's death.

"They can shoot Cody from behind and at distance and if it's a shot they need Paul's face in close up they can CGI it later on," the source added. "If Cody agrees it's because he wants to honor his brother's memory. There are many details that still need to be worked out, but right now the family and cast and crew are all still grieving."

Universal Pictures told The Daily Mail that right now no decisions have been made.

"At this time we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on Fast & Furious 7 for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise.  We are committed to keeping Fast & Furious fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it.  Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker."

Today is the 42nd year anniversary of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is divided into 7 constituent emirates & they are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain.

The late Sheikh Zayed started the development of the emirates upon discovery & exportation of oil. I pray that God touches the hearts of our leaders to heed to the needs of our people & transform our country just like the arabs in the UAE did to theirs.
