Cross River State annually  experiences  natural disaster portfolios such as flood, wind storm, acid rain and hail stones which cause devastation. But what wreaks  more  havoc now  are conflicts among communities in the state.

One can, on  the fingers of one hand, count the number of communities in the state that have not engaged in one form of intra or inter-communal conflict at one time of the other with  consequent loss of lives  and  destruction of property.

These  conflicts are sparked  by trivial misunderstanding or squabble for land for agricultural activity  particularly  during the planting season, January to June.

Though the state is  blessed with, large expanse of fertile land, this is hardly considered  enough as communities  seek to acquire more by encroaching on that of  neighbours and this often  leads to  confrontation and then   “war”.

To stem the high frequency of conflicts, Governor  Liyel Imoke sometimes  wields the big stick against traditional rulers and political leaders by sanctioning or suspending them from office.

In one of such recurring conflicts  in the Central Senatorial District of the state, on Sunday, 2 June,  five persons were reportedly  killed, 300  homes set ablaze and  about 5,000  people rendered homeless.

The attack was  said  to have been masterminded by aggrieved youth from  Adun  village who alleged that a man, Akani Azugo,  from  Inyima  community,  stole cassava tubers from a farm belonging to an Adun  man and   was  arrested by the police, but the youth were not satisfied and felt that the Inyima people had undermined their “superiority” and dared them by stealing their cassava..

The attack left  Inyima, located about 200km from Calabar, in ruins   as virtually every  building was either burnt or demolished.

The assailants did not  spare the  newly constructed and fully equipped primary health centre built by the Cross River State Government in the community as it was destroyed along with its  facilities including beds, drugs and  solar panel.

House hold property was burnt and domestic animals such as goats, fowls, dogs were killed. The animals carcasses littered the village.

Public institutions like schools and churches in neighbouring villages have been turned into refugee camps with majority of them at Assiga Old and New Towns, Igbo-Imabana, Nko and Assiga Beach. The  atmosphere in the village was one of gloom. A few  men were seen  in the village  when Sunday Vanguard visitedwhile women and children trickled-in to salvage whatever property was left which they could take to the refugee  camps.

The Cross River Deputy Governor, Efiok Cobham,  who visited  Inyima  two days after the conflict to  see things for himself described the destruction  as barbaric and a slap on civilization. “It is pathetic that the state government’s lofty programmes of providing social amenities such as roads, hospitals and schools are  being derailed by  dastardly behavior such as this”, Efiok lamented.

He promised that the matter would be investigated and  culprits brought to book and urged the victims to volunteer information to enable the authorities apprehend the assailants.

The Director-General Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr. Vincent Aquah, who also visited the displaced people in their  camps, assured  them of government help.

A victim, Mr David Agbo (51), told Sunday Vanguard that  the villagers were roused from their sleep that Sunday morning by the attackers who invaded the village in “large numbers  armed with sophisticated weapons and shooting sporadically, burning and demolishing  houses with explosives”.

He said the attack came as a surprise and caused so much panic that the villagers fled  in different directions mostly through bush paths to neighbouring communities.

Agbo narrated that some  days before the attack, an Inyima man, believed to be insane, was alleged to have been spotted harvesting cassava belonging to an Adun person and was arrested and detained by the police.

He said that, on Friday, which was their market day, women, who went to their farm to harvest cassava for sale in the local market, came running back to complain that the Adun people armed with dangerous weapons drove them from their farms and that they were matching towards the village.

Another victim, Mrs.  Caroline Solomon (38), who sat mournfully by her demolished building, said  she was in the company of other women in the farm when suddenly the assailants came  from the bush and drove them away.

“I saw one of our boys who was with us in the bush caught up and surrounded by the assailants attacking him with machetes. He  must have been killed”, she stated.

Meanwhile, Honourable Moses Abeng Onor, the leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly and member representing Obubra 2 in the Assembly, along with four other Adun community leaders were  arrested and detained by the police at the police headquarters in Diamond Hill allegedly in connection with the incident.

The South African Treasury has confirmed that an agreement, to repatriate the millions of dollars held in South Africa by the Muammar Gaddafi regime, has been reached with the Libyan Government.

Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, said the transfer of "what is thought to be about one billion dollars", would be done under the terms of the UN Protocol.

The assets are in the form of funds held by local banks as well as gold bullion stored at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport.

Gordan met with a high-level Libyan Government delegation tasked with locating all assets taken out of Libya by Gaddafi and his aides.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Gaddafi's former Chief of Staff, Bashir Saleh, who is on Interpol's most-wanted list, had surfaced in South Africa.

It appeared he assisted the deposed Libyan leader and his family to stash the money in South Africa.

The official opposition Democratic Alliance said Saleh was spotted at the 5th BRICS summit in Durban earlier this year.

It expressed concern at claims that he is able to fly regularly - without being detained - between South Africa, Swaziland and Niger.

It called for Saleh to be arrested and a full investigation conducted "so that the world knows that South Africa will not allow itself to become a safe haven for international criminals''.

A Maiduguri based businessman (name is not disclosed for security reasons) on Thursday turned in his biological son, a member of Boko Haram, to the Joint Task Force, JTF, with an order that he should be shot dead, witnesses said.

The son, according to close family sources, had once threatened to kill his father before he fled home and returned only recently; as security operatives continue to clamp down on the sect me. He was said to have returned as a prodigal son, seeking asylum in his father's compound.

"After confessing all his crimes including how he participated in the killing of people and looting of banks to his father, the old man said he has no such conscience to keep a killer son in his home," said the family member under anonymity.

The 60-year old Kanuri man who lives in Babban-Line Commercial Area, Maiduguri, simply approached the Sector Office of the JTF and told them about his son.

Witnesses quoted him as saying, "This boy is my son; he is a confirmed member of Boko Haram and has killed many people, he too should be killed too."

In a dramatic twist, as the young man attempted to flee from the soldiers to whom his father handed him over, he was shot at and struck down by a bullet. He later died. His father, who was yet to completely leave the scene simply turned around, looked at the writhing body of his son on the ground and said, "Masha Allah" meaning, "To God be the glory."

Before he was handed over to the soldiers, the young man was said to have revealed to his father and family members that he possessed two cars and had millions of naira buried somewhere near his family home. But the father said he had no interest in the ill-gotten assets and has no intentions of inheriting them according to Islamic laws as they are 'haram'.

A former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has accused the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, of working for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Buhari said with many statements credited to the pastor concerning him (Buhari), it was evident that he was desperate to help the electoral fortunes of the President.

The former head of state, in a statement on Sunday, said this while responding to the call for his arrest by the CAN President.

The CAN president had said in a statement last week that Buhari was a prime leader of the Boko Haram sect, and should therefore be arrested for questioning.

Oritsejafor had said, "He (Buhari) is, therefore, the prime leader of this religious and blood thirsty sect called Boko Haram, a movement that is based on a warped interpretation of a strict adherence to force people of other religions into Islam.

"This kind of fundamentalism is the driving force behind his failure in each election in the country."

But Buhari, in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, Rotimi Fashakin, described Oritsejafor's statement as lacking in facts.

He said, "It is our view that this statement is utterly tendentious and unsupportable by incontrovertible facts.

"We are aware that as it was before and after the 2011 elections, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is keen on helping the electoral fortunes of his friend, President Goodluck Jonathan."

While enumerating Buhari's stand on Boko Haram, whose activities he said had been condemned by the former head of state, Fashakin also described the CAN's president's call as reckless.

He said, "We leave discerning Nigerians to judge and see the incongruity in Pastor Oritsejafor's reckless call and GMB's unwavering patriotic stand on Nigeria's insecurity.

"Again, Pastor Oritsejafor has proven to be a willing implement for destabilisation in the hands of the Presidency, in the orchestrated heckling of GMB ahead of the 2015 elections.

"The moral rectitude, personal discipline and patriotic love for Nigeria by GMB is head and shoulder above what the current leaders of the nation possess.

"GMB is not in the mould of leaders that do not match their words with deeds. In the run to the 2011 election, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan told an unsuspecting nation, "My ambition is not worth the blood of anybody. But truly, his electioneering campaign was trailed by blood, tears and woes."

The Nigerian Copyright Commission has arrested one Mr. Ubong Obot for illegally transmitting broadcast signals of Multichoice (DSTV) to an estimated 500 houses in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Obot is said to have installed the DSTV signals to different homes for N5,000 and charged N1,000 per month as subscription fee.

Uyo Liaison Officer, NCC, Mr. Amudipe Charles, who represented the Director-General, NCC, Mr. Afam Ezekude, told journalists in Uyo on Monday that Obot was arrested with the  equipment he used to transmit the cable television signals illegally.

Ezekude said,"The operatives of the NCC have raided Obot's house over illegal transmission of cable television signals in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

"Illegal transmitting decoders, transmission boosters, rolls of installation wires, and other accessories worth N20m were impounded during the raid at two different locations. The locations are No. 89 Atan Road, 32 Umuahia Road, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

"Investigation into the case continues and appropriate action will be taken on conclusion of investigation."

He stated that Obot, who operated as Botex Integrated Service, was arrested based on intelligence and surveillance reports during an anti-piracy operation.

He added that the operatives of the NCC had also on June 1, 2013 arrested four pirates and confiscated an estimated N3.2m worth of copyright infringing products during an antipiracy operation in Uyo metropolis.

Ezekude stated that the anti-piracy raid was carried out in four outlets dealing in suspected pirated products located on 2, Abak Road; 29, Abak Road; 30, Oron Road and 37, Oron Road, Uyo.

"The impounded products included large consignments of foreign and local VCD/DVD movies as well as musical works of both foreign and local artists," he said.

Ezekude said the commission was intensifying its anti-piracy campaign across the country to protect genuine right owners and the copyright industries in the country.

He said the commission was hindered by paucity of funds and asked the Federal Government to help provide the needed funds for the commission in the interest of Nigerians.

The Zone 5 Police Command, Benin, has demoted a police inspector, while another policeman, a station guard, was dismissed over the rape of one Mrs. Esse Ozegbe, who was thrown into the same cell with two men at the Abraka police station.

The station guard, whose name was not disclosed, was on duty at the time the crime was committed, while the inspector, Mrs. Erebi Akporunor, was demoted to the rank of Sergeant.

The punishment was the outcome of an orderly room trial of 11 police officers implicated in connection with the rape saga.

Ozegbe, who was arrested on February 26, 2013, following a quarrel with a neighbour, was said to have been detained along with some men at the Abraka Police station, Delta State, where two of them were said to have raped her in turns, while the policemen allegedly turned a deaf ear to her cries for help.

The two men, who allegedly raped Ozegbe, are said to be currently standing trial at a magistrate's court in Abraka.

Meanwhile, Ozegbe through her counsel, Efe Ejomafuvwe, has instituted a suit at the Federal High Court, Warri, over the matter.

Ozegbe in the suit is claiming N750 million damages against the Nigeria Police. Hearing in the case was fixed for June 13.

An Abia State High Court has sentenced a banker, Mr. Theophilus Ajakaiye, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Theodora.

The convict allegedly murdered his wife on October 12, 2009 at Azumini Ndoki in the Ukwa Judicial Division of Abia.

The charge read, "The accused person is charged with one-count of murder contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Vol. 11, Cap. 30 Laws of Eastern Nigeria, 1963, applicable in Abia State."

Until her death, Theodora was an employee of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc.

The legal battle between the deceased's family and the accused began soon after the alleged killing until  the judgment recently.

The Presiding Judge, Justice T.U. Uzokwe, said in his judgment that having heard from the accused person, learned counsel for the accused and the prosecuting counsel, the offence carried a mandatory sentence which is death.

He said the court had no power to reduce the sentence and that being the case, he had no option but to sentence the accused.

The judge said, "Though the accused was not seen killing the deceased, I find that the accumulated circumstantial facts found proved that the accused indeed murdered his wife, Theodora Ajakaiye.

"Suffice it to say that I find the accused guilty as charged and I convict him accordingly."

The sentence read, "Theophilus Ajakaiye - The sentence of this court upon you is that you be hanged by the neck until you be dead and may the merciful Lord have mercy on your soul."

In the allocutus, counsel for the accused pleaded for mercy on behalf of his client.

He said, "I thank the court for this well considered judgment. The accused has no criminal record. We plead for mercy. There are two children to the marriage and they have already lost their mother."

It was learnt that the convict had yet to appeal against the judgment.

Customers of First Bank Limited may find it difficult to carry out some banking transactions from Thursday to Monday due to the decision to shut down the bank's branches nationwide during the period.

The shutdown, according to the bank, is to enable it upgrade its core banking application from Finacle 7 to Finacle 10, which will ensure easier and faster customer services and experience.

Our correspondent gathered that the decision to shut down operations in order to facilitate the migration to Finacle 10 would affect the bank's over 700 branches nationwide.

Apart from all the branches being shut, Point of Sale transactions and transaction alerts by Short Message Service will not be possible during the period. In addition, all card services, except Visa prepaid card, will not be available via Quick Teller and the Web.

First Bank said in an explanatory note, "All transactions that will impact on the banking platform e.g. settlements, inter bank (RTGS, NEFT, FIP) inflows, will not be available."

However, the bank said skeletal services would be available on its ATMs throughout the migration period until 5pm on Sunday, and would be restored at 6am on Monday.

Online banking services, according to the bank, will also be available until 5pm on Sunday and be restored at 6am on Monday, while its mobile money services will be available throughout the migration period.

The bank had notified its customers through SMS and email of the development and apologised for inconveniences that they might suffer as a result of the platform upgrade.

The Group Managing Director, First Bank, Mr. Bisi Onasanya, said in an open letter to the customers, "I write to thank you for your continuous patronage and inform you of our plan to upgrade our core banking application as part of the ongoing transformation of the bank.

"I am particularly excited at the prospect of this milestone as it represents the opportunity to significantly transform our service delivery to you in many respects, while also supporting our plans for the introduction of new and innovative products as we anticipate your every banking need.

"This is a major project and on account of the technical requirements, we regret that there will be some disruptions to our services for about three days, while the upgrade is ongoing."

Onasanya said only intra-bank transactions would be available on the alternative channels while the upgrade was going on, adding that the clearing of customers' might also be slightly delayed but that all investments due on any transaction within the period would only be terminated when all services were restored without affecting the value dates or the value of accrued interests on such investments.

However, the decision is causing anxiety among the customers of the bank, who complained that the planned shutdown would further compound the problems they had been coping with lately in accessing the institution's services.

For instance, customers have been complaining of not being able to draw cash from the bank's Automated Teller Machines for sometime now, while money transfers to other banks from First Bank branches have been difficult in the last two weeks.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Ugo Okoroafor, said he was not aware of the plans by the bank to close its branches and urged our correspondent to call back to enable him make enquiries.

However, subsequent calls and SMS sent to his mobile telephone line were unanswered as of 9.30pm when this report was put together.

Czech police found a million liters of illegal alcohol hidden in underground tanks in one of the biggest seizures of untaxed booze ever.

Police have been chasing a widespread web of untaxed alcohol makers and distributors since a batch that included poisonous methyl alcohol killed 45 people and forced the government to ban all liquor sales for several weeks in September last year.

A spokesman said officers found the illicit booze at several unused industrial sites around the steel-making and mining center of Ostrava, in the eastern Czech Republic near Polish and Slovak borders, and at a site near the northern German border.

"Under the floors, in some places under a two-meter layer of cement and rubble, tanks with illegal ethanol were found," the police said in a statement.

Video footage showed officers and firemen using an earth mover, pneumatic drill and steel cutters to reveal the storage places.

Tax evasion from the sale of the booze would amount to about 12 million euros ($15.45 million), the police said.

The Czech Republic is one of Europe's heaviest drinking countries, and the world's leader in per-capita beer consumption of around 140 liters per year. Hard alcohol made from flavored ethanol is widely available in bars, stores and market kiosks, and popular especially among poorer Czechs.

Industry experts have estimated illegal liquor make up 15-25 percent of the market.

Police said they have not charged anyone in relation with the case yet. Last year, dozens of people were charged when police traced poisonous illicit alcohol to producers.

Residents of Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos State are still talking about 18-year-old Olanrewaju Kayode-Aremu, who stabbed his father, Victor Kayode-Aremu, to death.

Police authorities said the suspect stabbed his 46-year-old father to death while the man was attempting to enter his room.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Olanrewaju was a student of University of Ilorin, Kwara State, but was expelled because he had poor grades.

A police source at Langbasa Divison, where the suspect was detained, told our correspondent that the incident occurred on May 1, 2013.

He said, "Olanrewaju is the first of five children. He lived with his parents and siblings in a duplex in Langbasa. He was enrolled in University of Ilorin to study Geology in 2011 but was later asked to withdraw because he had very poor grades.

"Since he was not attending any school, he started working with his father who was a civil engineer. The arrangement his father made with him was that he would be working with him until he could get admission to another school."

The senior officer told our correspondent that the suspect was not happy about the arrangement. He said the frustration later led him to laying an ambush for his father while he was trying to enter his room.

He said the suspect stabbed his father in 10 different places, causing him to bleed to death.

He said, "Around 10pm on that day, the whole family had just had dinner and they were watching television when their father received a telephone call. He went upstairs and when he got to the entrance of the room, Olanrewaju appeared from nowhere with a kitchen knife.

"He stabbed his father in the back, sides, hands, legs over 10 times. The man, who was screaming in pains, attracted the attention of other members of the family who were downstairs. When the mother came upstairs, she found her son still stabbing her husband. The presence of other children did not also stop Olanrewaju.

"When she tried to save her husband, Olanrewaju threatened to stab her if she came close. The woman then went outside and called on neighbours for help."

PUNCH Metro learnt that it took the intervention of neighbours to overpower the 18-year-old and wrest the knife from him.

It was learnt that the victim was rushed to J-Rapha Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A resident, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the family had been in shock and had not been staying home since the incident occurred.

He said, "The family is a young one. Olanrewaju is the first born and he had four younger siblings."

The suspect, who was not remorseful, said he killed his father because he was convinced that his father did not love him.

He said he was not worried about his predicament since he was too young to be prosecuted.

"The case is a very long story. The truth is that my father never loved me and the only form of care he showed me was paying my school fees. I am just 18-years-old so I know I cannot be prosecuted. I have no regrets for my action," he said.

When contacted on the telephone, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she had yet to be fully briefed on the incident.

Robbers equipped with ropes, hammers and chisels broke into a strong-room at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium after a Justin Bieber concert and made off with 3 million rand ($330,000) in cash, local media and police said on Monday.

An officer from the nearby Booysens police station in the sprawling Soweto township said officials at the stadium, which hosted the final of the 2010 soccer World Cup, only realized the cash was missing on Monday morning.

The haul included takings from Sunday night's concert by 19-year-old Canadian pop sensation Bieber and a gig the previous evening by U.S. rockers Bon Jovi.

"The money was taken from the building and they only realized today," the police officer, who declined to be named, told Reuters. "We don't know how many people were involved as we are still gathering evidence."

Emmy-winning television thriller "24" will return in the summer 2014 with its lead star, Kiefer Sutherland, after a four-year hiatus, Fox network said on Monday.

"24: Live Another Day" brings back Sutherland as counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer in the series that follows his race against the clock to foil presidential assassination attempts and chemical weapons attacks.

The new 12-episode mini-series will represent 24 hours in Bauer's life, following the same real-time format that became the series' trademark.

"The response to '24' is unlike anything I have ever experienced as an actor before," Sutherland said in a statement. "To have the chance to reunite with the character, Jack Bauer, is like finding a lost friend."

The series, which originally ran for eight seasons between 2001 and 2010, won an Emmy award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006, and Sutherland won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in the same year.

ubikings: Akwa-Ibom State Governor Chief Godswill Akpabio has commended his Delta State counterpart Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan on the successful completion of a New Government House in Asaba the Delta State Capital. Governor Akpabio gave the commendation at a meeting of Governors of the South South and South East holding at the New Government House, Asaba. Chief Akpabio commended Dr Uduaghan for the quality work done and expressed delight that the project was executed by an indigenous contractor.

As much as I would've loved to commend him for executing a capital project, I won't cos this isn't on the priority list. From what I've seen, he needs to do more than building a new government house.

A 7-year-old Russian boy told investigators he had shot and killed his 4-year-old brother by accident with their grandfather's rifle on Sunday, law enforcement authorities said.

The boy said he and his brother had found the gun under a bed in their grandparents' house in the Siberian town of Bukachacha and were playing with it on the porch while the adults slept, the federal Investigative Committee said.

The boy said he accidentally pulled the trigger while trying to take the gun out of his younger brother's hands, the committee said. Authorities earlier said they suspected someone had shot the younger boy from outside the enclosed porch.

The Investigative Committee said authorities would open a criminal case, apparently against the grandfather, on suspicion of illegal possession of an unregistered rifle.

The high profile trial of subsidy fraud suspect, Walter Wagbatsoma, who is accused of illegally obtaining N1.9 billion from the Petroleum Support Fund (PSF) continued today with his lead attorney, Wole Olaonipekun, acting out a script aimed at delaying judicial proceedings.
Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) embarked on trivial questioning of the prosecution witness, in an obvious effort to delay and frustrate judicial progress.
As part of the subterfuge, Olanipekun took the court back over facts that were already before it.   To that, EFCC counsel, Rotimi Jacobs quickly drew the attention of the court to the ploy.
The judge agreed with Mr. Jacobs, and issued a warning to Mr. Olanipekun to desist from such delay tactics and squandering the precious time of the court.
"Mr. Olanipekun as a matter of fact, you are wasting the time of the court and I think we will make progress if you don't ask questions on facts already before the court,” Justice Lateefat Okunnu warned.  “I will not tolerate wasting judicial time in my court."
Mr. Wagbatsoma is standing trial alongside his cohorts, Adaoha Ugo-Ngadi, Fakuade Babafemi Ebenezer, Ezekiel Olaleye Ejidele as well as Ontario Oil and Gas, for duping the PSF of the nearly two billion dollars under the guise of importing 39.2 million liters of PMS, but without actually importing a single liter.
When he found his name among those to be arraigned last year, Wagbatsoma and Ugo-Ngadi,the Managing Director of Ontario Oil and Gas, curiously warned President Goodluck Jonathan to desist from trying them, or else they would expose how they bankrolled his 2011 presidential campaign with close to $1billion. Sources knowledgeable about that deal disclosed that over $300 million was trafficked through the Minister for Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke.

At the time of his arraignment alongside his cohorts in July last year, Wagbatsoma demonstrated contempt of court by his absence, reportedly leaving Nigeria for Paris as his arraignment drew near.

The courtroom games played by Mr. Olanipekun today appeared to be one of the ploys carefully scripted to ensure that, over time, Wagbatsoma’s trial fizzles out.  It is a game that is being played by many people in Nigeria rich enough to purchase freedom with funds looted from the public till.

Swedish police said on Thursday they found drugs on teen idol Justin Bieber's tour bus in Stockholm, but had no suspects and were unlikely to pursue the case further.

A police officer on crowd duty smelled marijuana on an empty tour bus outside the hotel where Bieber was staying just before his concert in the capital on Wednesday night, police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said.

Police searched the empty bus after it had taken 10 to 15 individuals to the concert venue.

"The police went onto the bus and searched it and found a small amount of narcotics," Lindgren said. "We don't know who had the drugs or who smoked them, so it will be hard to link them with any individual."

The drugs have been sent for analysis and Lindgren said the police did not plan further action unless they got more information.

Bieber is travelling Europe on his "Believe" tour and is due in Finland for a concert on Friday.

Bieber got into trouble earlier this month after a museum dedicated to Anne Frank said the 19-year-old had written that he hoped the young Holocaust victim would have been a "belieber", the word used by his fans to describe themselves.

Anne Frank, who died aged 15 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, is one of the best-known Jewish victims of the Holocaust due to her diary.

Four men have been arraigned before Magistrate Demi Ajayi of Ikeja Magistarte's Court, Lagos, for allegedly harassing a prostitute, Jennifer Uche.

Uche told the court that on the date, she met one of the suspects in a club. He solicited for sex with her for N5,000 per night.

However, when Uche got to the defendant's place at Abubakar Street, about six other males came out of hiding and forcibly had sex with her.

She said she lost consciousness after the ordeal and when she regained consciousness, the suspects paid her N800.

Uche said she subsequently "walked unsteadily to the nearest police station" and reported the incident.

The two-count read, "That you, Solomon Obaniro, 28; Adebayo Fagbemi, 25; Soliu Obalowu, 27; and Oluwatosin Akomolafe, 22, and others at large on the 13th April, 2013, at about 3:00 am at No. 28, Sule Abubakar Street, Opebi, Ikeja did sexually harass one Jennifer Uche, aged about 27 years; and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 262 of Lagos Criminal Law of Lagos State."

The suspects were also charged for conspiring among themselves "to commit felony to wit: sexual harassment, and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 409 of Criminal Law of Lagos State."

They, however, pleaded not guilty.

Police prosecutor, Barth Nwaokoye, argued that the suspects be remanded in custody.

Ajayi, however, set bail at N300,000 each with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned till June 17, 2013.

The world's oldest living person, Japan's Jiroemon Kimura, celebrated his 116th birthday on Friday with congratulations from around the world and from Japan's prime minister.

Kimura was crowned the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records last December after the death of 115-year-old Dina Manfredini of Iowa in the United States.

"I truly congratulate you on your 116th birthday," Prime Minister Shenzo Abe said in a video message.

"I'm 58 years old, still a young man at only half your age. Thanks to your generation's efforts, Japan could overcome several difficult times and achieve the prosperity we enjoy today. Your healthy existence becomes our confidence and pride."

The Mayor of Kyotango City, Yasushi Nakayama, visited Kimura at his home in Kyotango, western Japan, to present him with messages from around the world.

Kimura is living with his 60-year-old granddaughter-in-law and has a three-meal-a-day diet of rice, pumpkins and sweet potatoes, according to local media.

Japan has more than 50,000 people aged 100 or more, 2011 government data showed, reinforcing its reputation for longevity.

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, has made the list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The TIME Magazine, in its 2013 edition of TIME 100, released on Thursday, which encompasses world  leaders,  pioneers,  artistes and other titanic figures, listed Omotola  on its Icon List.

It includes the likes of United States First Lady, Michelle Obama; Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton; Myanmar opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi; 15-year-old Pakistani activist shot by the Taliban, Malala Yousafzai; and Beyonce.

Explaining how Omotola made the list, TIME's movie critic, Richard Corliss, on the TIME's website,  described her as "the Queen of Nollywood."

"Called OmoSexy by her fans, she has made 300 or so features, from the 1996 Mortal Inheritance to the 2010 super production Ijé, shot partly on location in Los Angeles. She  brings a juggler's grace to her roles as actress, singer, reality-show star.

"Success hasn't spoilt Africa's most renowned leading lady. Rather than going Hollywood, Omotola wants to stay Nollywood," he notes.

Omotola,  who is married to an airline pilot,  whom she wed on a flight from Lagos to Benin, was also recognised for her initiative in starting an empowerment scheme known as "Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme."

A 28-year-old man, Morufu Rasheed, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate's Court for conspiracy, rape and theft.

Rasheed and two others at large were accused of raping a 27-year-old nursing mother (name withheld) at Palm grove end of Ikorodu Road, Lagos, while she was waiting to board a bus.

The charge read in part, "That you Morufu Rasheed and others at large on the April 13 about 10pm at Palm grove Bus Stop, Lagos in the Somolu Magisterial District did conspire together to have carnal knowledge of (name withheld) without her consent and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 409 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

"That you Rasheed and others at large at the same date, time and place in the Lagos magisterial district did steal the sum of N100.00 belonging to the victim and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2789(2A) of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011."

Rasheed pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Defence counsel, Mrs. Beauty Otigi, asked the court to grant the defendant bail. The prosecutor, Mr. Ishola Samuel, objected to the bail application on the premise that the complainant was a nursing mother.

He said, "The complainant is a nursing mother with a baby daughter. The trauma of the rape would still affect her while breastfeeding her child."

The Magistrate, Mrs. M. Tanimola, ruled that bail be granted the defendant in the sum of N100,000.00

"Bail is granted the defendant in the sum of N100,000.00 with two gainfully employed sureties. Sureties should be blood relatives of the defendant and evidence of their tax payment is to be verified. Case is adjourned till May 18 2013," she said.

The Imo state Finance Commissioner, Okafor Chike John and the Accountant General, Eche Ezenna George have been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The duo are

being detained in relation to a contract awarded to a construction company JPROS International Limited for a construction contract for which the company was paid the full cost of transaction – N1 billion – even when work had not commenced on the project.
This is the second time the anti-corruption agency carried out detention of the two officials over allegations of fraud and abuse of office. The duo were arrested in January and granted bail but were never charged with a crime.

The contract led to the impeachment of the former deputy governor in the state, Jude Agbaso.
