@Rhymz,
Quite insightful! I will take out time to read the whole interview later in the day since I'm presently occupied. The fact that he mentioned ANPP in the interview shows that he granted the interview after 1999. Yet Gowon has not issued any rebuttal to the devastating accusation of being responsible for the breakdown of discipline in the army.

I hereby call on mod. OAM4J to lift his leprous fingers off this thread! I don't know why he should continue to hide the comments from Igbo posters with a flimsy excuse that they contributed nothing to the debate except insults while giving Ileke idi, CyberG, Dayokanu, and a host of them free hand to dish out insults on Igbo posters without contributing meaningfully to the debate.

moons ago and till date, he hasn't been able to provide proofs to buttress his wide claim that Zik's party won that

election which necessitated the so-called carpet-crossing.

I suppose you can supply us with the election result which proves conclusively, that the NCNC won that election. Can you?
Ofcourse, I will! I may have to travel to my town to search for the proof in the books in our library. I will still come back to this thread with proof, even if it takes me months.
PoliticsRe: Obafemi Awolowo’s Letter From Prison (dated 28th March 1966) by ACM10: 12:54am On Jun 28, 2012
@Katsumoto,
Can u ever present your argument without condescending? huh Well, I will ignore that inherent trait of yours. This issue has been thrashed many times on this forum, of which u participated in most of those debates. I don't know why u are bent on revisionism. You continue to throw mud at the wall hoping that it sticks. I guess that your stubborn position is borne out of patriotism and loyalty to your tribe. That's why you tend to allow your loyalty to colour your objectivity.

1. Awolowo is a slimy character. He is neither here nor there. His position on sensitive issues is almost always ambiguous. Prior to independence, Zik insisted on unity and stood by it, Sardauna insisted on unity on their own terms and stood by it, Awolowo insisted on the introduction of seccession clause, then waivered.

2. I want to remind you that Awolowo's Action Group came 3rd after the 1959 election. I believe that Zik knows Awolowo's slimy nature more than we do. (Awo proved time and again that he cannot be trusted during his struggle with Akintola) That's why Zik did not consider him worthy in character to go into alliance with him. Even though Awolowo's party came 3rd, he still has an eye on the post of the prime minister in the event of an alliance with Zik's party. Can you imagine how ambitious he can be?

3. Awo engineered the cross-carpeting of Zik's party elected member of yoruba extraction into the Action Group, thereby setting off the dangerous trend of tribalism in Nigerian politics. His action forced Zik to relocated to the east to usurp Eyo Ita's power.

4. Awolowo was tried in the civilian court of law(not millitary tribunal), and found guilty of treasonable felony. Of which he was later jailed. Awo's lawyer has all the time and freedom in the world to argue against the case brought against their client. The propaganda talk of putting Awo behind bar on trumped-up charges is complete bullshyt.

5. Awo wrote a later to Aguiyi Ironsi pleading for clemency, commution of his sentence and presidential pardon. Which was later granted and approved by Ironsi. Though the order was yet to be carried out before his assassination.

6. Ojukwu did not accept the authority of Gowon. Therefore Gowon cannot order Ojukwu to release Awolowo from Calabar prison. Ojukwu released Gowon either as a goodwill gesture or to carry out the order of Ironsi before he died. It's on record that Ojukwu has complete control of all the affairs of eastern region including the millitary, police, custom, prison, etc. Gowon was simply a pawn in the hands of northern officers like Danjuma and Murtala. He could hardly assert his authority on his boys, let alone the eastern region. The owner of the vehicle that conveyed Awolowo back to the west does not change the trajectory of this debate. Therefore I consider it inconsequential. I might ignore your responses at my discretion. But don't misinterprete it as a sign that you defeated me with your superior argument, since I consider this debate a waste of time. I knew quite well that I can't change your well-dug views. So u are free to hold fast to it. Cheers.

Katsumoto: So many ignorant people on NL; even if they are ignorant, using logic can also help in analysing a scenario.

Awo was charged with Treasonable felony in November 1962 and sentenced in September 1963

In March 1966, Awo wrote to Ironsi from prison asking to be released but was ignored by Ironsi. Between January 1966 and July 1966, Ironsi was Head of State and Ojukwu was Governor of the Eastern region.

Gowon was sworn-in in the evening of July 30 1966 but made his announcement as Head of state of August 1st.

Obafemi Awolowo was released from prison on the 8th of August 1966; exactly 1 week after Gowon's ascension. Awo was driven to Ikenne in Murtala Mohamed's car.

On the 8th of August 1966, who was paying the wages of the Warden at the Federal Prison in Calabar? Was it not Gowon? Who was also paying Ojukwu's salary as the Governor of the Eastern region?

Ojukwu wants us to believe that while he was in power with another Igbo as Head of State for 6 months, he could not release Awo from prison but could release Awo from prison exactly one week after a new government, one which he did not recognise, headed by Gowon was formed.

Ojukwu could not have released Awo from prison because he didn't have the powers to do so. He was only being an opportunist when he made that claim.

The Yoruba soldiers released by Ojukwu were released after the war started in 1967 and all stayed in Biafra to fight on the Biafran side.

Nightshift: Even if we have more financial facilities from Igbo state governments, we don't have enough arable land to equal their production capacity. Besides, how many Ndigbo are willing to work in the farm this days? Are we going to import Somalis to work in our farms? Ever heard about comparative advantage?
Are u for real? huh If your intention is to crack a joke, then have it at the back of your mind that u cracked a very bland joke. Are u telling us that Deserts and Savannah grasslands are more arable than tropical rainforest? You must have played a terrible form of truancy during your agricultural science class.
Apart from Anambra and Imo which are densely populated. East has vast expanse of land which can be utilized for agricultural purposes. Just travel through Enugu and Ebonyi.
BTW, if there are proper incentives, many youths will consider exploring a career option in farming.
PoliticsRe: Food Scarcity Hits Kaduna As Igbo, Yoruba Traders Desert Markets! by ACM10: 3:15pm On Jun 27, 2012
@Nightshift,
Who told you that east cannot produce those farm produce which u mentioned in significant quantity to feed its populace? The reason for the imbalance is that northern farmers has access to low-interest credit scheme which the eastern farmers doesn't have. Therefore northernen farmers can engage in commercial agriculture with little qualms. So their farm produce tends to be cheaper compared to the ones from the east. Therefore the natrural law of economics will take its due course. Cheap farm produce from the north drives the eastern farmers out of the market. If the ground is levelled up, I promise you that eastern farmers will compete favourably with their northern counterpart.

T9ksy: So why the kwashokor during the civil war?
The conventional explanation for hunger and famine during the Biafran war was as a result of blockade. But that explanation on its own is insufficient! Remember that Nigerian fighter planes were bombing farms too. Most of the productive energy of Biafrans were channelled into the prosecution of war project. There is hardly any young men left to engage in active farming due to war distraction. Also, many farmer has to leave their farmland and migrate to other areas as refugees. There is hardly any vehicular movement to distribute the little farm produce of the time. Finally, there is total breakdown of law and order. Biafra was in a state of near-anarchy brought about by the war. So government does not funtion. If you put all these conditions together, you'll then understand why kwashiorker epidemic occured.

R-L; PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN, PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE, SEN. DAVID MARK, DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE, SEN. IKE EKWEREMADU WHILE BEHIND IS SEN. UDOMA EGBA DURING THE OPENING OF THE SENATE 2012 RETREAT IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE. JUNE 25, 2012

… Says Religious Fundamentalism, Not Poverty Responsible For Boko Haram Crisis

UYO, June 25, (THEWILL) - President of the Senate, David Mark on Monday sounded a strong warning to Northern Leaders to check the rising violent activities of the deadly fundamentalists group Boko Haram, saying its activities could lead to the nation’s disintegration.

Mark, who made the remark at the Senate Retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, also declared that the northern leaders’ code of silence on the issue in the face of the Boko Haram’s continuous violence shows that the leaders are as guilty as the perpetrators of the mayhem.

“If the elders in the North cannot speak out and stop this menace let them tell us. Let them come out and say so boldly, because the belief out there is that some elders know about these people and decide to keep quite. If care is not taking, the way things are going, if the Boko Haram menace is not halted, it can lead to break up of Nigeria. Because there is an extent to which the people can take it,” Mark stated.

Mark, who also debunked often-touted insinuations that poverty is the root cause of the crisis said, “It is all about religious fundamentalism and ideology.

“Poverty is not the cause, otherwise if every poor person decides to carry arms then Nigeria will seize to exist. So if people talk about poverty and hunger as the cause of the Boko Haram menace I say no.”

The Senate President further added that bombing of churches almost every Sunday and killing of innocent Christian worshippers has stretched the patience of the people to the limit; such that the leaders are finding it increasingly difficult to persuade their followers not to seek retaliation. “There is limit to human endurance,” he chipped.

Nonetheless, Mark cautioned Christians on the danger of retaliation saying, that doing so means that they (Boko Haram) have succeeded in achieving their target. “Leave vengeance to God”, he appealed.

“I think it is time we educate the suicide bombers in the North that it is a wrong belief that killing innocent people would automatically take you to heaven where they would inherit 17 virgins. Of course it would be an uphill task for one person to handle 17 virgins,” he contended.

He said religious leaders and preachers should desist from indoctrinating their adherents into suicide bombings, adding that government should think seriously on issuing licenses to preachers as a way of checkmating the evil ones among them.

Mark also called on government to seek international collaboration with its neighbours as well as Western countries on ways to tackle and uproot the Boko Haram sect.

While declaring open the retreat the 2011 Senate Retreat taking place at the Ibom Meridien and Golf Resort, the Senate President attributed the emergence and upsurge of terrorist activities in the country to some “disgruntled and over-ambitious politicians.”

Also addressing senators at the retreat tagged “The National Assembly and National Security: Securing the Future for Development”, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan noted with sadness that unguarded remarks and statements by ‘do-or-die’ politicians had led to destruction of several lives and properties in the northern parts of the country.

President Jonathan warned such politicians to stop promoting ethnic and religious politics adding that national security should not be sacrificed on the altar of partisan politics.

He called for joint collaboration between the executive, legislature and judiciary arms of government on the need to review and strengthen existing laws on terrorism to reduce the activities of the Sect.

Meanwhile, host governor, Godswill Akpabio while welcoming the participants described the retreat, as a divinely arranged coming at a time Nigeria is experiencing security challenges.

Akpabio said that a strong union between the executive, legislature and Judiciary was capable of solving the Boko Haram problem.

According to the Governor, “the bombs and the killings would not deter the government of President Goodluck Jonathan from delivering on its mandate of transforming the country.”

paris10: I dated this pretty damsel years ago. We were so much in love, and I would say yes to everything she asked of me; from money and gifts to cooking and all. Her family were so nice to me as well.

One day her mother called her and suggested that we both should start preparing for marriage since we'd dated for years. Do you know the answer this girl gave her mother?..So sad, she told her mum that I was too nice and would not want to marry me because she would take advantage of me. She said she wanted a man that would handle her roughly and challenge her demands. She got what she wanted folks!

A year later, she got pregnant for this dude working in a bank. The guy refused accepting the baby because he had a family somewhere. The guy was begged by the girl's family to at least show up at the naming ceremony, which he did. And that was all. Two years later, she contacted me and admitted her mistakes. I attended her son's birthday and made love to her once more just to say goodbye.

She's still single as of today... God forgive me for everything.
