How can masses fight for them when they are often used as a willing tool to suppress popular will?

I agree that the Nigerian government solved nothing by winning the war but neither did Ojukwu by starting it which brings us back to square one

and to those who say Ojukwu had no choice.
It seems clear to me that he had a choice.

An unpalatable one; to BOW and accept Gowon as his Lord and Master that was the choice.

Some people like to see this in the light of the bravery  vs  cowardice dichotomy that is their view.

If he had done that perhaps thousands more would still have died but I believe not as manyas eventually did,who knows.

If would have bought time for a different kind of struggle.

It seems strange to me the logic that somehow because those problems are unresolved the war was a sensible thing to do .
By the bolded, you imply that the war was as a result of power struggle between Ojukwu and Gowon.

A bottle is fully filled with oil and it weighs 1.5Kg. When it is half filled with the oil it weighs 900g. What is the weight of the bottle?
Let the weight of the bottle be x

When filled with oil = 1500g

When half-filled with oil = 900g

Weight of the oil = 1500-x

While 1500-x/2 = 600

x = (1500)-2*600

x = 300g

This problem is too elementary

Pls explain

ACM10:
Your arguement doesn't hold water

What do u mean exactly by the bolded?

Are you a military strategist?

Who goes to war with 100% certainty of winning the war?

How on earth will Soviet Union know that they can ever defeat Germany?

Does Germany knows that the tide of war will ever turn against them?

There is always room for miscalculation in war.

Biafra lost the war and Nigeria lost the peace.

The issues Nigeria thought that they've militarily suppressed continues to crop up 42 yrs after the war.

Ayodele I  respect your opinion you have a right to disagree with me

Since the object of your post seems to be to disagree with me then I think it is dishonest to use emotive words like BLAME and COWARD
as if attributing them to me.

My point was simple it was a miscalculation from a military perspective and Ojukwu himself accepted responsibility for his action which was normal

It is not factually correct that secession was to stop the pogroms which took place in 1966.If that were the case then Ojukwu would not have taken part in the Aburi talks at all

I set out quite clearly what I believe ,as is my own right too.

I do not seek to change anyone's views only that it be clear there are different takes.

Once that is clear ,I am happy.

Let us leave it at that .

Unfortunately there will always be those who believe there are only two sides to this discussion  ;Those for and those against the Igbos. They have my deepest sympathy

You all will not be allowed to use the body of this great Nigerian for cheap publicity and a very unpatriotic, if not treasonous cause. Ikemba will be given a befitting burial. He was one of the best the Army has ever produced and will be honoured as such, whether you like it or not.

PoliticsRe: PAY YOUR TRIBUTE TO SERGENT SUNDAY BADUNG by ACM10: 3:17am On Feb 18, 2012
After all said and done. The action of Sgt. Badung is idiotic. He's probably one of these poorly educated men that got recruited into the police. An educated man should atleast think before approaching the package. Can u see the confidence he exhumes as he was approaching the package as if he's the one that kept it. He is a poster child of what we suffer in Nigeria in the hands of the police. When these people who thinks with their cauda equina are armed with Ak47 and Kalashnikovs, what will become of ordinary citizens. Methinks that police is a danger to the Nigerian society. Government is deliberately swelling the ranks of police with these poorly educated or educated-illiterates, because they can be easily manipulated. They displays robotic obedience too. Why wont they, since they hardly understands the implications of their action.

Last 3 yrs when I was driving down from Nsukka to Enugu, I met a mopol officer who used to be a marijuana addict and a known petty criminal at one of the check-points. You need to see the enthusiasm with which he was brandishing his AK47. I was like "how on earth did any right thinking man arm this dude"? I suggest that police should swell their ranks with educated graduates and not 3 credits O'level holders. An educated graduate will on the very least understand the implication of approaching a suspicious package in a terrorist hotbeds.

@Bolded

Nigeria's police actions has historically been rash.

Their modus operandi is to take(rash) action, then think about its consequence(s) later.

Be it murdering innocent Nigerians, shooting peaceful protesters, extrajudicial murder of Nigerians in their custody etc

To bad that the consequence of his rash action is spontaneous; no time left to ponder on the consequence(s) of his action

Since u have indepth into Igbo cultures and traditions. huh I want u to explain that to us>>>>> and why they are now untouchableshuh
They are not near to the nobles.

As a matter of fact, they are the down-trodden, lowest of the low of the society who ran to the deity to seek for protection from the perceived or apparently perceived persecution from the society

They are untouchable because they belongs to the deity

CultureRe: Igbos, Will You Marry An Osu? by ACM10: 12:17am On Feb 16, 2012
In fact, Igbos should even thank the osu's for our European-styled sophistication.

Osu's and Ohu's being an outcast are the 1st to embrace western culture.

When most of our fore-father's are resisting modernization.

They are the first to embrace western education.

They are they first to embrace Christianity.

My grandfather once told me a story of one Bishop Okagbue who was an ohu from Abatete(not so sure), bought/adopted by Okagbue family of Onitsha. Then donated to the church as a cathechist where he arose to become a bishop.

Osu's are one of the richest group in Igboland.

Osu's are one of the most enlightened group in Igboland,

Osu's are the first to reject the bad aspect of Igbo culture.

Osu's opened the eyes of Igbos to the merits of western modernization.

Without Osu's, Igbo's would have been as backward as the north.

My grandfather once told me a story of when he wanted to marry into the Osuji Njemanze Royal family of Owerri. But dropped the idea after strong resistance from his mother based on osu caste system.

In my town in Anambra, there is no discrimination based on osu caste system. But the issue gets unearthed during marriage rites. That's why marriage by the so-called osu daughter's are always impromtu. Inorder not to give room for bad belle people to pour sand into garri. But at Ozubulu and Oraifite, the discrimination is palpable. They see it as taboo for u to walk down the street with a daughter from the so-called osu family.

In Ozubulu, the area populated by the osu's are the most developed, rich and high class neighbourhood.

Our continual practice of osu caste system is dealing a blow to the issue of internal cohesion. My uncles complain of saboteurs during the civil war and Igbos acting as agents to the Gowon govt. But none of them has bordered to ask about the motivation behind their actions. I believe that the discrimination based on this ill-defined caste system called osu played a major role.

I warn Igbos and I warn umunnem again that if we don't abolish the osu caste system in Igboland. We will continue to have an army of saboteurs within u that are willing to sabotage our collective effort.

I commend Igwe Orizu of Nnewi for setting the precedence in abolishing the osu caste system in Igboland.

I enjoin the State assemblies and Ohaneze socio-cultural group to abolish the practice in the whole of Igboland.

I will marry an osu.

My grand dad once asked me this question a month before he died.

I replied him saying "that will even increase the likelihood of me marrying the girl"

He did not utter a word thereafter and the discussion ended there
