SCRIPTURE: Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Matthew 24:44

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The best fulfilment that money or anything can give you on earth is shadow compared to the fulfilment that just a second in God’s Presence will give you in eternity.

In our previous studies, we have looked at some of the things that constitute our readiness and preparedness for eternity with God in heaven.

Today, we shall look at four other things that facilitate our spending eternity with God in heaven. 

1. Laying up treasure before God.

Wherever your heart is, that is where your treasure shall be directed to (Matthew 6:21). Let me give you an example: when a man’s heart has been conquered by a lady, his money goes in her direction. He abandons everyone else and spends on the lady who has captured his heart. So, if you show me where you direct your resources, I will show you where your heart is.

With the increasing anti-church sentiments in the world, it is possible to hear the voice of the world that says, “Church is looking for your money”. But the truth is, if your heart is truly with God, there is no voice from hell that can divert your treasures from Him. Lay up treasures before God. 

2. Doing what you can defend before God. 

Don’t do things because you see others do them. There are people who dress because they see other people dress like that. The person they are copying may be a pastor’s wife who dresses almost half naked, and so they conclude: “Since she is a spiritual person, the wife of our general overseer, it is okay to dress like her”. Don’t deceive yourself. Do what you can defend before God.

One day, I counselled a man who wanted to divorce his wife. After speaking with him and he still seemed not to understand, I told him that he should go ahead and do what he can defend before God. There is an accountability to give before God (Romans 14:12, Matthew 12:36-37, Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). Do what you can defend before God.

3. Following peace and love with all men (Romans 14:19, Hebrews 12:14).

Follow peace and love with all men because your relationship with God, as well as your relationship with people, affects your destiny in eternity. Love people, do not hate people (1 John 4:20). And please, stop playing with malice and bitterness. It is disaster when, for instance, husband and wife who sleep in the same house can’t talk to each other; they wake up in the morning and do morning prayer in bitterness. Please don’t waste your life this way. 

4. Looking forward to His coming. 

To live with eternity in view, you must look forward to His coming (Philippians 3:20-21). Our citizenship is of heaven, not of the earth. We are looking for His return. But this is not true with many Christians. 

In those days, the way of greeting among brethren was Maranatha (1 Corinthians 16:22). Maranatha means: “Come Lord Jesus.” It’s an expression of a longing in the heart. Please know that the best fulfilment that money or anything can give you on earth is shadow compared to the fulfilment that just a second in God’s Presence will give you in eternity. 

Beloved, to live ready for eternity, you must lay up treasure before God, do what you can defend before God, follow peace and love with all men and look forward to His coming.

Remember this: The best fulfilment that money or anything can give you on earth is shadow compared to the fulfilment that just a second in God’s Presence will give you in eternity.

THE DEAD CONSCIENCE

It has been confirmed that when conscience is dead, life is doomed both in this world and in the world to come. 

SCRIPTURE: Now the spirit speaketh expressly that in the later times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of the devil, speaking lies in hypocrisy having their conscience seered with a hot iron. 1 Timothy 4:1-2.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: When the conscience is dead, life is doomed both in this world and in the world to come. 

Earlier, in our previous study, we saw the necessity of living with a clear conscience. The state of our conscience is very critical to our relationship with God. Our conscience affects our eternal destination. 

A living conscience facilitates a healthy spiritual life. 

Today, we want to look at what constitutes a dead conscience.

It has been confirmed that when conscience is dead, life is doomed both in this world and in the world to come. 

1 Timothy 4:1-2 says, Now the spirit speaketh expressly that in the later times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of the devil, speaking lies in hypocrisy having their conscience seered with a hot iron.

When people tell lies and don’t seem to feel anything; when they steal and don’t feel anything; when they commit immorality and don’t feel anything; when they cheat and don’t feel anything; when they kill and still don’t feel anything; their conscience is already dead. They are not safe. 

Now, conscience can die in the following ways:

1. Repeated acts of rebellion.  

When you do the wrong thing repeatedly and your conscience pricks you for a while but you refuse to repent, you will be left alone. A time comes when the sinful action will begin to appear normal. That is the realm where some hardened criminals live their lives.

2. Un-confessed sins

Conscience can become dead with un-confessed sins. This is a situation where the person is doing the wrong thing but does not see any reason to say “sorry” to God or to man. 

3. Excusing or justifying wrong deeds.

Your conscience can die when you excuse or justify wrong deeds. When a person is busy excusing, explaining or justifying a wrong deed, the conscience can come to a point where it becomes unresponsive and dead. 

Beloved, it is very important to take heed to this so you don’t run your race on earth in vain. What shows that you are preparing for eternity is living with a clear conscience that is void of offence.

LIVING WITH A CONSCIENCE VOID OF OFFENCE.

As a Christian, it is crucial to live with a conscience that is tender and alive. That is living with a conscience that makes you to know when you have done something wrong. 

SCRIPTURE: And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence towards God, and towards men. Acts 24:16

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A living conscience equals a healthy spiritual life. 

In our previous studies, we saw two things that constitute readiness and preparedness for eternity with God in heaven. We saw that being born again and living to please God are necessary requirements for eternity with God in heaven.

Today, we shall look at another requirement for guaranteed eternity with God in heaven. 

It is living with a clear conscience that is void of offence before God and man. 

As a Christian, it is crucial to live with a conscience that is tender and alive. That is living with a conscience that makes you to know when you have done something wrong. It is a conscience that has the ability and maturity to say “sorry” to both God and man when you have done the wrong thing. 

Acts 24:16 says, And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence towards God, and towards men.

Do you know that even unbelievers who don’t know God have conscience that can either accuse them or excuse them? Romans 2:14-15 says, For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.

 So, peoples’ conscience either accuses or excuses them, even though they are not born again or go to church. 

There is nobody who kills a person and does not know that he has done a wrong thing. Nobody needs to go to church to know that stealing is wrong.

When you conspire against someone, there is a conscience to hold you accountable. This conscience becomes more active and lively when you become a Christian.

1 Timothy 1:19 says, Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

That is to say, when you throw your faith and conscience away, you make a shipwreck of your destiny. When you walk contrary to your conscience you make a shipwreck of your destiny. 

It was Rev. Samuel Wesley who told his son, John Wesley, “The inward witness, the conscience, that is the greatest sign of Christianity”. Let me put it this way: A living conscience equals a healthy spiritual life. 

Beloved, ensure that your conscience is alive and tender always.

Living to please God

You were created to give pleasure to God with your life, so you don’t live just to please yourself. You don’t live to please society, and you don’t live to please the devil; you live to please God, your Maker.

SCRIPTURE: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Revelation 4:11.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: You cannot live with God in eternity if you cannot live for Him on earth. 

Yesterday, we saw that one of the things that constitute our readiness and preparedness for eternity with God in heaven is being born again.

Today, we shall look at yet another thing that constitutes readiness and preparedness for eternity with God in heaven.

It is living to please God with your life

You were created to give pleasure to God with your life, so you don’t live just to please yourself. You don’t live to please society, and you don’t live to please the devil; you live to please God, your Maker.

In Philippians 1:21, Paul the apostle said, For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Concerning Jesus Christ, God says, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17

This is also corroborated by Matthew 17:5 which says, While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Live to please God with your life.

Beloved, endeavour to answer the following questions objectively: Who is your life giving pleasure to, God, yourself or the devil? What you do with money, who is it giving pleasure to? Can God say that He is pleased with your life based on the way you are living? Can God say He is happy with you? Someone is happy with the way you dress or appear, who is that person, God or the devil? 

Now, why is it necessary to live to please God? Revelations 4:11 says, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

You are to exist to please God because you were created for His pleasure. So, you cannot say, “I can dress the way I please. I will live the way I want”. No! You don’t have the license to live the way you want.

If God created you for His pleasure and you don’t live in this world for His pleasure, how will you end in eternity? You cannot live with God in eternity if you don’t live for Him on the earth. 

So, live to please God with your life, not the devil, society or yourself.

Remember this: You cannot live with God in eternity if you cannot live for Him on the earth.

Being born again to live again

To be born again is not just joining a church, growing up in church or being baptized.

SCRIPTURE: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: To be born again is not just joining a church, growing up in church or being baptized.

Yesterday, we saw what it means to live with eternity in view. This is very important because the consciousness of eternity on earth is key to living with God in eternity.

Today, we shall look at what constitutes readiness and preparedness for eternity with God in heaven.

It is Being Born Again (John 1:12, 1 Peter 1:23, 2 Corinthians 5:17)

To live again in eternity with God in heaven, you must be born again on earth. Therefore, you must be born again to live again. 

Now, what does it mean to be born again? To be born again is not just joining a church, growing up in church or being baptized. Today, we have many people in church who are not genuinely born again Christians. 

Sometime ago, I went to preach in a Christian fellowship somewhere and gave an altar call. The amazing thing was that the leadership of that fellowship came out to give their lives to Christ because they literally got to know what genuine salvation entailed for the first time. 

I also heard God’s servant, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi sometime ago, how he went to a church in the United Kingdom to preach the gospel, and the pastors and leaders of that church came out to give their lives to Christ.  So, it is possible to be in church and not be born again.

Now, to be born again is to recognize that you are a sinner. 

It is to come to a point where you know that you need God’s mercy.

Then you repent before God by asking Him for the forgiveness of your sins.

After this, you ask Jesus Christ to save you by His sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. 

Then finally, you accept Him into your life as your Lord and saviour, and allow Him to take the centre stage of your life going forward.

When this happens genuinely, there is a witness in your spirit that you are now a child of God (Romans 8:16). There is a peace or an assurance you experience, which is called “The Assurance of Salvation”. And you are overwhelmed with joy.

It is also important to understand that to be born again is to have a definite experience. Let me give you example: I came to know the Lord first of all in the year 1979. I was a young boy of about 11 years old then. I went out for an altar call just as children would do when a call for salvation is made, but I was not grounded in the faith. So, I slid back. I could not trace that experience to a particular date. But in the year of 1986 on the 12th of May, I got a divine encounter that led to my rededication. This time, the experience was definite and clear and that date can’t be forgotten. 

Beloved, maybe you find yourself in church but you are not sure if you have given your life to Christ; it is not too late. You can give your life to Jesus today. Don’t assume eternal matters. Assumption brings frustration.

Remember this: To be born again is not just joining a church, growing up in church or being baptized.

2. If you are born again, make up your mind to continue to grow in the Lord.

3. But if you are not yet born again, you need to give your life to Jesus Christ. In that case, pray the prayer below.

Lord Jesus, I come before You today. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I cannot help myself. I know that You died for me on the Cross to save me from sins. I confess my sins today and I ask that You come into my life. I accept You as my LORD and Saviour. And from today, I will follow You, forward ever and backward never. Living with eternity in view is living prepared. It is not trying to get prepared; you are already prepared!

SCRIPTURE: For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come. Hebrews 13:14 (NLT)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: To live with eternity in view is to know that you have a home beyond the earth.

Recently, I preached two messages on the end time. The titles of these messages are, “Surviving the Last Days” and “Living with Eternity in View”.

Now, when we hear a statement like, “Living with eternity in view”, many times, people don’t understand exactly what it means. 

That is why, today, I will like us to see what it means to live with eternity in view.

1. Living in the present with the end in mind. 

Living with eternity in view is living in this present time with the end in mind. It is living in the present with the end in perspective (1 Peter 4:7). That is to say, even though you are alive today, the end is on your mind. 

2. Living and conducting our life’s actions with eternity as major consideration. 

Living with eternity in view is asking yourself questions like: “Where will my life end with what I am doing now? Where will this particular action or lifestyle lead me to in the end?” Living with eternity in view is living and conducting our life’s actions with eternity as the major consideration. It is knowing that everything we do on earth has eternal implications (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14); it is knowing that earthly actions have eternal consequences.

3. Living in the NOW with readiness and preparedness for eternity.

Living with eternity in view is living prepared. It is not trying to get prepared; you are already prepared (Matthew 25:13, Matthew 24:44-45) 

Living with eternity in view is living with readiness and preparedness for eternity. 

4. Living as strangers and pilgrims in the earth. 

It is living with the full knowledge that this world is not your home (1 Peter 2:11). Living with eternity in view is knowing that you have a home beyond the earth.

5. Living in the world without forgetting yourself in the world. 

Many people forget themselves in this world by the way they do things; they do not look unto Jesus (Philippians 3:20). They have forgotten who they are and where they are going. Living with eternity in view is living as a citizen of heaven while on earth.

Remember this: Living with eternity in view is knowing that you have a home beyond the earth.

Scriptural strategies for survival in the last days

You need spiritual sensitivity in this end time. Be sensitive to God’s instructions.

SCRIPTURE: Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:36.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: An essential requirement for survival in these last days is spiritual sensitivity. 

Yesterday, we saw part of what to do to survive in the last days. We saw the need for the maintenance of a buoyant prayer altar and the refusal to be swayed by falsehood. 

Today, we shall look further at other things to do to survive in the last days.

1. The Maintenance of spiritual sensitivity 

Many years ago, I returned home from school, and saw a woman prophesying and everyone gave attention to her as a great prophetess. Even a genuine prophet I knew also believed this woman.  I then told this genuine prophet that what the woman was saying was not from God. Consequently, the woman was prayed for, the demon was cast out from her, and she never prophesied again. It took spiritual sensitivity to know that the woman was not genuine.

You need spiritual sensitivity in this end time. Be sensitive to God’s instructions. Don’t be like a donkey that must be pulled here and there before it obeys instructions (Psalm 32:8-9). Be sensitive. Know when to turn off the TV, when to stop a conversation, or when to quit an unprofitable relationship. You should know who should lay hands on your head and who should not; know when to fast, and when not to. An essential requirement for survival in these last days is spiritual sensitivity. So, maintain spiritual sensitivity.

2. Living ready

Since we don’t know when the Son of man will come, it is advisable to always live in the consciousness of eternity. This is not the time to harbour un-confessed sins.  You live ready by being watchful and prayerful (Luke 21:36). 

3. Being immersed in Kingdom assignment (Matthew 6:33).

This is not the time to procrastinate on the work of God. This is not the time to say you will work for God only after you are married, after you have given birth to children or after you have gotten a job. 

I was working for God and preaching the gospel as a student on campus. People thought I was a full time pastor. I was in my second year in the medical school the first day I preached in the medical students’ fellowship. And the people seemed to be asking each other: “Where did this guest minister come from?” This was because even though I was among them as a fellow student, they didn’t know of a student ministering like that. That was the intensity of the preaching at that time. 

Beloved, the maintenance of spiritual sensitivity, living ready and being immersed in Kingdom assignment are part of the scriptural strategies for surviving in the last days (Matthew 6:33).

Remember this: An essential requirement for survival in these last days is spiritual sensitivity.

It is good to have a pastor but do not allow your relationship with God to depend on the spirituality of another person.

SCRIPTURE: This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 Timothy 3:1

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: This is the time to have the spirituality that is buoyant and vibrant.

Events in our world today clearly confirm that we are already in the last days. We are not told in the Scripture the exact date the world will end, but we are given signs and signals to identify the end of the age. We have already explored many of these signs in our previous studies.

Now, how do you live in the last days so as not to be a victim of the spirit of the age?

1. Maintain a strong personal altar of consecration and relationship with God (Hosea 6:3).

It is good to have a pastor but do not allow your relationship with God to depend on the spirituality of another person. This is the time to have the spirituality that is buoyant and vibrant. Maintain a very strong personal altar of consecration and relationship with God. Ensure that your prayer life, fasting life, Bible-study life are all in shape.

2. Refuse to be swayed by the winds of falsehood and deception (Ephesians 4:13-14).

Refuse to be swayed by the winds of falsehood and deception. The fact is, there are people who are addicted to error and are missing road permanently. There are those who are addicted to new things, new doctrines, new theologies, and new revelations. But the truth is, there is nothing new under the sun.

Many people are working with the so called new doctrines these days. One of those doctrines is the one that says that you can live anyhow and still make heaven. That is a lie from the pit of hell. Someone may claim that he had a revelation where Jesus gave him an instruction that is the basis of his erroneous doctrine even though the so called instruction is contrary to the written Word of God. Beloved, please know that even Satan appears as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Some people are permanently looking for what is not missing. They have itchy ears (2 Timothy 4:3); that is, ears that are permanently looking for what to hear. 

Refuse to be swayed by the wind of falsehood and deception. 

Remember this: This is the time to have the spirituality that is buoyant and vibrant.
