WebmastersRe: What Web App Have You Created by Afam(m): 10:33am On Jun 19, 2008
Do you mean web applications that were developed from scratch or web applications that were tweaked or had the copyright information changed?

It is also not enough to list them, it makes perfect sense to provide functional links to them (after all they are web applications) so that users can see them otherwise anyone can claim to have developed over 100 web applications even if the information is not true.
WebmastersRe: Lets Talk About Collaborative Approaches To Web Projects by Afam(m): 10:20am On Jun 19, 2008
Thanks for the correction on the number of people that developed Hotmail. My mistake, I don't visit wikipedia to get information on things and I am glad that out of all the examples cited you were able to fault only one.

However, the point has been made that even projects that became very successful had one person or in some cases two people as against your idea of having many people as a pre-requisite for successful projects.

You are bringing up the definition of collaboration which no one is debating. The crux of the matter remains your use of words that are both improper and unnecessary, no amount of goal shifting will erase that.

I cannot and will not condemn collaboration neither will I oppose those that prefer it.

Where we differ is that I respect people for doing things or believing in things they choose to where as you believe that those that do not agree with your positions that may be based on lack of experience or skills are wrong.

May be with time you will learn to accommodate ideas that are not original to you.

As regards running a company to make money I doubt if you have any advice that is worth taking on that area as I run 2 successful businesses that were started from scratch.
WebmastersRe: Does Anyone Know About This Web Technology? by Afam(m): 9:23am On Jun 19, 2008
You need to know why he is insisting on LAMP. If the project is meant to run on the web there is no point insisting on any particular mix but if it is going to run on the client's computer(s) and if he is a linux person then his choice makes sense.

The issue here to me is where the application will run from. The technology itself is not the problem, why one wants it is the issue to me.

@Afam
I also said: wink

Now, is incest a strong choice of words? Probably but I will stand by it. I have worked alone and worked in a collaborative sense and based on my experiences, the +ves outweigh the -ves with respect to collaborating. Again, I state this based on my experiences. By incest by the way, I meant in-breeding of ideas. In other words, no matter how smart one person is, one can only learn but so much on his own as opposed to when he is working with a diverse set of people. No one person knows it all, irrespective of how elegant/functional their sites might be.

Does that clarify things?
No, you have not clarified anything, on the contrary you are trying to justify your positions and introducing other parameters like "smartness", "know-it-all" etc which were never part of the equation.

Standing by your use of the word incest doesn't make it right nor proper because I have seen armed robbers that stood by their crimes.

1. If one person understands the different parts of a web project to the extent he can handle it alone then that should be a plus and not a minus.

2. It is possible for one person to know more than a team of say 5 people because knowledge is not a factor of the number of people but a factor of the willingness to learn and ability to assimilate and process information.

My point is this, it is wrong for you to use such a word on people that do not share your opinions based on the level of experiences, no amount of standing by the words will justify it.

PHP was developed by someone, not a team. Hotmail was originally developed by someone that sold it to Microsoft. I am certain that your type would have condemned the efforts of these people long before their projects became successful. Even google was started by two people and not 10 or 20 people.

You cannot or must not use your level of experience or knowledge to make generalizations.

tundewoods:
@ yawa-ti-de

i think i understood what you meant when you used the word incest as relating to inbreeding and the point was well established.

To clarify further i think the fact is that most web projects gotten by an average web designer are what i would refer to as micro projects on very thin budgets therefore its rather hard for an up coming web designer to start carrying what we called the collaborative approach, apart form that i think Nigeria shoud be no exception to collaborative approaches of web development.
We have been through this before on your thread on outsourcing and it boils down to the same thing.

Outsource if it makes sense to you, collaborate if it makes sense to you.

Your preference to anything does not make other views wrong and this is one area where I believe you need to work on.

You always believe you are right and others wrong and such arrogance (usually based on I-know-it-all) makes no sense.

You can be working on all the big projects in the world as you always want everyone to believe, that is not the issue. The issue is that people have different reasons for doing what they do the way they do them and just because you cannot or would not want to do what they do the way they do them is not enough reason to look down on them or condemn them.

From experience, people who have little to offer will be the first to brag and then rubbish others, I wonder how these things make them feel good or accomplished.

Enjoy the day.

Take a lot at the image below so you can help ask Kelechiodo if what is there on the personal plan was what he paid for. It will help find a solution to his problem.
I am sure he has made it clear that he paid for a domain name and I believe that was the plan without a free domain name attached to it.

And the email from the company clearly stated they would not renew until a web hosting package was renewed.

This is wrong by all standards and it is this type of problem that is bring all sorts of bad names to the web development industry.

What is wrong is wrong, there is no middle ground here.

@smartsoft
Then that doesn't belong to this post. This is for "collaborative approaches" and not "is collaboration good or not?"
The content in bold does not do justice to an earlier comment reproduced below.

yawa-ti-de:
The days of working by yourself in a dark room are over. Today, with no time zones and globalization running amok, collaboration is the new work ethic du jour. Sure, one person can do everything from writing up the proposal to coding the entire site. However, that to me amounts to incest and at best, you learn very little and the project suffers.
Someone that considers as incest the idea of one person handling a web project cannot be expected to make balanced comments on this issue.
WebmastersRe: Lets Talk About Collaborative Approaches To Web Projects by Afam(m): 3:32pm On Jun 18, 2008
Interesting thread.

Bill Gates started what became the world's most widely used software working with just one person. One keeps writing the code and the other keeps testing.

Youtube was developed by just 2 people (who were working at paypal) and in 6 months it was sold for $1.6B.

My point is this, if you can work alone and come out with good projects fine. If you can work with say 2 or even 10 people in any project no matter how small and still come out with good projects all well and good.

Mindsets that tend to oppose people who work alone simply because they may not be able to handle such projects alone are not fair.

I write a lot of codes and I believe I can web enable anything on the web. Of course, it does not even make any sense these days to develop web projects without input from the owners and such inputs sometimes cover the design, layout etc of the project. In cases like this do I need to hire a web designer to replicate a design a client wants when I can replicate it with graphics tools around? I don't think so.

While presenting all the many advantages of working as a group it is vital that you also respect the views of those that prefer to work alone.

The end product (web projects) should be the ultimate decider as regards the correctness or otherwise of people working alone or as part of teams.

1. Abimco should clearly state why he is suspending the page because he listed amongst other things issus with blling which to me is the case here.

2. Kelechiodo has not done anything wrong by wanting to renew only the domain name since he cleary paid for he domain initially, so the domain name is not a free one.

3. Abimco should renew the domain name as requested by the client as it is not compulsory for a client to host with any service provider.

4. Kelechiodo should understand that it is perfectly normal for people to see the suspended pag even though he cannot see it as he may be viewing cached web pages on his machine.

5. Abimco should be able to clear his name as he is using this forum to advertise his services and the email Kelechiodo reproduced is indicting to me.

@ topic,

Peope should be careful and vigilan to avoid arm twisting and unnecessary misunderstandings with service providers.

We are offering a 10% on all inverters until the 20th of July 2008.

Visit http://www.justalternativepower.com for relevant information on inverters, backup systems etc

@tundewoods,

Thanks. I am not bothered at all by A2J's comments because it is obvious he does not have fundamental knowledge about online security.

@A2J,

Your comment is not bad, it has no basis because the about 1000 security holes you stated is pure mirage and based on lack of understanding of online security and/or secure scripts.

You don't just make statements about things you cannot substantiate and expect people to take you serious.

@topic,

Have also derived a carshop website from the same platform by changing the logo, a single line in the css file and the categories and subcategories.

You may take a look and comment accordingly at www.jwspreview.com/carshop

Will do the same for different businesses so that business owners will have a good idea of what the script can do even before paying for it, makes life easier for everyone.
WebmastersRe: Website Review For Www.nayourshop.com, Anyone? by Afam(op): 3:51pm On Jun 14, 2008
@A2J,

Your advice on security has no basis because you don't have about 1000 security holes on that website.

I don't know what you picked up at APTECH but I know enough about online security to keep the bad guys out.

On the software, don't worry about it again, thanks for your time.

@uspry1,

Thanks.

@A2J,

1000 security exploits? Guy are you writing a script for a home video? And yes, I am thinking of keeping the site, that is the essence of setting it up but I won't be wasting time trying to work on the about 1000 security exploits you talked about.

One more thing, I don't take people who say one thing and do another serious. You said you have a portable version of CS3 and said you could send a copy if I wanted. I said yes and asked what it would take to get one, you answered that it will cost nothing and that I should send an email to you. I did but never got a reply and when I wondered why you stated you did not receive any email and I pasted my email here on the forum. Up till now now software.

Conclusion - You have credibility issues and I don't take that likely.

If the speed referenced in the content above is correct then the Glo UMTS is really fast.

I have used a broadband connection with 1Mbps stated but with average speed of 12kbps when tasked.

Sometimes, it makes sense to even use a dial up like MTS First wireless with an average speed of about 6kbps at the cost it goes for than to spend more on braodband solutions that are just marginally better than dial up.

Well stated.

Web applications will ultimately take over web designs as more and more clients demand more from their websites.

Quite a number of Nigerians are into web design when they should be going into programming for the following reason

A web designer cannot replicate a web application if he/she does not have programming skills

A web programmer can replicate a good website for a client even if he/she is not a web designer by simply changing colors and layouts.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Power Shortage To Persist by Afam(m): 11:09am On Jun 06, 2008
Unfortunately we have bone heads either advising the president or the president isn't really interested in providing steady power at all.

With a sound and workable energy efficiency policy in place whether by legislature or by education or both Nigeria can crash its energy need (whatever the current need is) and proceed to generate the required energy which will be faster, cheaper and easier to produce.

There are workable alternatives.

I have not used a generator in my office for 4 years and I have not been without power in my office. I use an inverter backup system and to guarantee that my energy need is reduced I stopped using the desktop and opted for the laptop anytime I am in the office.

At home I use the same inverter system but due to the time one spends at home especially during weekends I have a small generator that acts as a backup to both PHCN and my inverter and it comes up once in a while to recharge my batteries.

To reduce my energy need and increase my backup time while reducing my energy bills to an average of N300.00 a month I changed all my bulbs to energy efficient bulbs rated between 10W and 18W, I have replaced my fride/freezer with an energy efficient freezer rated @ 130W that turns everything into ice in no time so no need to use the inverter or generator to keep things cold, the electric ceiling fans are making way for energy efficient standing fans rated @ 50-52W.

I hardly ever stay out of power at home and never stay out of power in the office.

I don't have to wait for the useless politics going on in government to enjoy steady power supply.

CRASH YOUR ENERGY NEEDS AND GET AN INVERTER BACKUP SYSTEM IN THE MEANTIME. Diesel is at N140.00 and the cost of fuel may go up.

We must take control of our lives, waiting for the government is a huge waste of time in my opinion.

@Afam, i am guessing you are referring to military leadership because of the perceived decisiveness in action and more control over the vision of the leader. However, what happens if such power falls into the hands of someone who does not have the interests of the country at heart as has been the case? The current system has too much bureacracy which can stifle rapid progress, true. Due to the size of the government there is more room for corruption, true. However it has worked in many countries and the bottom line is that if a leader with vision really wants to, then there really is no excuse at all for snailed pace development. The system we have now if working effectively can actually be good because such size can see better control in the grass roots sense. The system is not necessarily the problem, but the people in the system, whichever it may be.
Trying to copy the western world in everything is certainly not the way to go, we must come up with our own unique solutions to our own unique problems.

China with all the recent economic progress will not hesitate to kill anyone that tampers with the money meant for the people and it is working like magic.

We need a serious, dedicated and no nonsense dictator as long as he will move this country forward.

Just as jungle justice for an armed robber caught in the act is better that handing the person over to the police that may just release him/her after collecting money from the armed robber.
