WebmastersRe: Website Review: Studyinogun.com by Afam(m): 7:31pm On Jul 03, 2008
Task focused website, typical example of a website people will visit and visit again to get relevant information.

Simple, neat and easy navigation.

However, the copyright says 2006. Is this a new site based on your post above?

A major category on that website (Directory of schools) does not have any entries after 2 years of being on the web? It doesn't tell a good story.

That directory alone could bring you a lot of money as most schools would want their details on such a specific website about schools in Ogun State.

Take care and please see my comments as sincere.

Update - Seen some sub categories under the catalogue.php page. Try to integrate a visual number to indicate the number of entries in any sub category instead of one clicking and being told that no entries exist.

Of course, if you know an expert in any area you will most likely be in luck but the key work here is "knowing" that such an expert exists in the first place.

Unfortunately, the ease the web brings as regards publishing is also the ease it brings in allowing anyone publish anything while claiming to be an expert.

That is why companies pay lots of money to consultants to enable them do away with the trash while focusing on the main thing.
WebmastersRe: 10 Cool Ways To Attract People To Your Web Site by Afam(m): 7:12pm On Jul 03, 2008
Nigerians with copy copy, people don't want to be original.

Just yesterday I found 2 articles on the web posted by someone that contacted me sometimes last year and we get to chat once in a while. The only wahala was that he copied my articles and pasted same and claimed he was the author of the articles.

http://www.articlestree.com/politics/death-penalty-for-politcal-corruption-ln-nigeria-no-opposition-tx486826.html

http://www.articlestree.com/politics/nigeria-online-scams-anti-corruption-efcc-still-missing-the-point-tx533803.html

As we were chatting yesterday I told him I wanted to show him something that might interest him and the moment I pasted the links to the 2 articles he either signed off or switched his status to invisible and and I am sure I may never see his status as available ever again.

This was someone I designed a site for, offered advice that he sought in setting up his business and office space yet the only reasonable thing he could do was to copy and paste someone else's articles.

Only God knows the type of people we meet online.
WebmastersRe: An E-book That Will Make You A Webmaster In No Time by Afam(m): 6:37pm On Jul 03, 2008
I really try to avoid posts that have to do with advice as they usually end up in "you think say you sabi pass me" comments.

The best route for anyone learning something new is for the person to read the manufacturer's or software owner's manual.

Of course, someone can gain an understanding of the product and even develop additional material for beginners. The problem with this route is that there is no way for any beginner to what whether the new material is right or wrong because with the power of the internet anyone can claim to be an expert on any area and unless you take time to read everything you come across on any particular subject there is no telling who is right and who is wrong.

So, it is possible for anyone to develop additional materials but that is risky when compared to information from the owner or manufacturer.
WebmastersRe: An E-book That Will Make You A Webmaster In No Time by Afam(m): 6:26pm On Jul 03, 2008
I am talking about tutorials from the owners of the software not ones written by someone else.

The manufacturer's manual is your safest route in understanding a product.
WebmastersRe: Demo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 6:21pm On Jul 03, 2008
Desperation and frustration on the increase. Exchange words with you? No, thanks. Some people are better ignored than managed.

As usual, I always try to get an idea of the character behind the posts and what came up when I checked your most recent posts is really not good as you are at best scamming people and bombarding different sections with the same scheme depending on the one you were working with at that time.

If the owner of this forum decides today to apply the rules you will be history unless of course you register another name and continue to scam people.
WebmastersRe: An E-book That Will Make You A Webmaster In No Time by Afam(m): 3:53pm On Jul 03, 2008
E-books won't turn anyone into a webmaster, web designer or web programmer in no time.

For web design, your best route is to follow the in built help or tutorial pages of the authoring tool you prefer.

For web programming, your best bet is to visit the website of the programming language you are interested in. There are tutorials, forums, issues that you will find invaluable.

Then practice. Look for web projects on the web you would attempt to replicate on your own. If you can successfully replicate websites then you can then begin to initiate projects on your own.

Take time to learn the fundamentals of anything you want to go into as you will never go wrong.

Design websites for fun or for business with businesses around you. Practice makes perfect, there is no short cut to web development unless you want to use content management systems all the way.
WebmastersRe: Demo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 11:30am On Jul 03, 2008
@OmniPotens,

Thanks.

The forum will heal itself and I believe it is already doing so. No artificial measure will heal the forum faster than allowing nature take its natural course.

Unfortunately, the admin has failed to apply the rules stated otherwise a lot of us here would have been banned a long time ago for insults.

Abuses and insults have never been effective in making a case and they will never be effective. Logic, facts and common sense should guide everyone in agreeing or disagreeing with positions.

It is obvious some of us grew up in environments where insults are thrown around all the time when disagreements occur. I grew up in an environment where people are respected regardless of the views they hold, instead logic and common sense are usually employed to show how wrong or right a person is.

I have never insulted anyone on this forum and never will. However, I will always respond to insults in kind because it is a right and it has always worked well for me so there is absolutely no reason to stop now or even tomorrow.

No one has monopoly of harsh words, we should always remember that.
WebmastersRe: Demo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 8:50pm On Jul 02, 2008
Good thinking. This may as well be the most sensible decision you are taking since you started using this forum. Zend certification? How do you process information? Interestingly, I am now the one insulting you, you are a complete pig. Are you tired of throwing insults? I give as much as I take but what pisses me off is when idiots like you insult someone and when you are insulted (as a way of response) you begin to play the victim. I really want to throw up, you are really pathetic.
WebmastersRe: Demo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 4:19pm On Jul 02, 2008
You are just a clown. Keep flashing your flash certification because a slowpoke like you cannot realize the essence of certification and the scope any certification can cover. Every single vendor can (and in most cases do) initiate a certification program. I certainly would not use this medium to educate you on the issue of certifications as a lot of debates and articles have been written about them. Until there is a universal certification program for web development getting flash certified is like someone that claims to understand 1 out of say 20 skills or vendor specific software.

Wake up, you have been sleeping for quite a long time now.

Congrat Afam! grin
Thanks my friend. As regards your comments on the presentation I will integrate it in future presentations.

@mambenanje,

I am shocked to read your comments about armed robbers and the pride thing, it still goes to show the kind of stuff you fill your head with, this is not Cameroun. There are people as young as you are that make millions of naira legitimately every week. Unfortunately, people like you that are more interested in proving that you are better than others will remain focused on that while others remain focused on doing what they do well.

@hanen the banker,

It seems that since Zenith bank slashed your salary you have been frustrated ( I wonder why you were not able to convince them or insult them into reversing such salary slash or do you just display your skills on insults on public forums even when you are ready to tolerate all manner of treatments at your workplace?).

I wish people like you went for the presentation I am sure you wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes with the man because he understands the web very well and had a team of 3 other young IT guys who asked the right questions and the moment relevant answers were provided everything became much easier.

As more and more clients begin to demand more from their websites you will see how more and more projects will be finding their ways out of people that do nothing but slice graphics and change colors.

One more thing, no one intends to duplicate ups or dhl website, in fact the client wanted something that is tailored towards solving issues with the business proper, only features that made sense were picked from those sites.
WebmastersRe: Webmasters, How Do You Measure Success? by Afam(m): 4:14pm On Jul 01, 2008
If those involved in web development from web designers to programmers cannot even agree on what successful websites are I very much doubt if they can come up with common yardstick to measure success.

For sure you will get people who would define success as

1. Making a lot of money developing websites
2. Making the most noise about how good you are (whether na lie abi na true)
3. Getting job satisfaction for being able to solve other people's problems

The beautiful thing about web development is that the end results will always be seen (never mind that some hide their works).

Unless people are forced to pay for services I think we really have to do more to earn the trust of the clients and that includes having fundamental knowledge about the web, the need for websites and the courage to look a client in the eye and say "NO'" you don't need this on the web.

Website should be seen as a tool just as a phone or car.
WebmastersRe: Demo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 3:18pm On Jul 01, 2008
@Omnipotent,

Thanks. The presentation went well and not only did the client agree to the layout and the proposed functionality of the site considering what he has presently (designed by a foreigner) we also concluded on providing inverter backup solutions for about 4 different departments in the office. The colors would be worked on as the company colors differ from what I used as the current website didn't come up the whole of Saturday when I setup the demo site so there was no way for me to know the exact colors of the company.

The client interestingly shares my views on functionality as he claims many of the websites he sees lack them even when some of them look fine.

It was a 4 hours meeting that meant at least N2.7M into my account.

@the witches on the forum plus the Camerounian clown,

Keep doing what you do best and let the world leave you behind.
WebmastersRe: Demo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 10:44pm On Jun 30, 2008
@uspry1 & OmniPotens,

Thanks for your comments. I will look into this for future demos if it cannot be done before the presentation tomorrow which the web designer has slated with the company. I will only be there to defend the programming stuff regarding all the functionalities the company want as they insist they want their site to match dhl and ups in terms of what users can do on the website which I very much believe is doable.

Thanks once again.

Hi,
if you really need a web guru as a consultant, i think you should not be asking for a CV.
because professionals in the house do not have CV nor the time to write CV.
all you need is our experience in e-commerce

there are two ways to do this but the first thing you need to do is to design your homepage
if you design with html using notepad or any other text editor
save your html code as index.html or index.htm

First method

open your site control panel
ask your web host (mcreal.net) the link to your control panel
login to your control panel and click on file manager
there will be a place for you to upload the html file
browse to your index file on your computer and click upload

after this you can check your site again to see if anything change

second method

to use this method all you need is a good ftp software
and the knowledge on how to use it

my advise

bigmodo, you need to learn dreamweaver.

We all need to improve. I am sure you do not know everything in any line of business you are in unless you are one of those that develop websites and proceed to hide them in their cupboards.

Get back to the topic, offer advice related to the issue on ground (if any) or get the hell out of the thread. I believe I am already with with people who brag and brag yet have nothing reasonable to show.

Gamine:
I was thinking that when i went into the Channels Portal.

As a user i was Overwhelmed with the info presented.

as a designer i would go with simple, chic and utilitarian

because i believe as a user its something i would go for too
The problem with a lot of websites you see around is that the business owner or the web developer fails to take into consideration the essence of the websites in the first place.

Rather than focus on what the visitor can do on the website the business owner is interested in the latest flash and assumes beauty alone will draw people and turn them into repeat visitors.

On the other hand the web developer is more interested in showcasing his latest skills on the website sometimes even to the detriment of the business.

A lot of businesses are revamping their websites now, some demand specific features that would make life easier for both potential customers and prospective ones.

It is all about the PEOPLE the website is meant to serve not the business owner or the web developer.

That is why successful websites out there do well in helping visitors achieve what they need to achieve and on time too.
WebmastersRe: Designing A TV Portal by Afam(m): 1:27pm On Jun 30, 2008
A TV portal must have a comprehensive TV Guide and of course a good and easy to access archives or transcripts of programs.

The easiest way to come up with features that a website should or must have is to see yourself first and foremost as a typical user or visitor that is visiting the website you intend to develop.

Once you are able to separate the designer from the user/visitor all those features that you failed to see on other similar websites or those features you would like to see will begin to come to your mind and before you know it your problem would move from looking for features to add to managing the features you came up with and that is when issues like logical navigation or categorization of links or tasks come in.
WebmastersDemo Review, Anyone? by Afam(op): 1:00pm On Jun 30, 2008
I really don't believe in doing free demos and I hope developers would insist on that so that clients would not be taking advantage of web developers as it will not take much from a client to ask for 20 demos from different people and of course pick all the positives from all of them and still give the project to one person.

The demo that I am asking for review was requested by a web designer and I charged for it as he insisted his client wanted a lot of things that would require programming.

Couldn't access the current website that needed a design the whole of Saturday when I setup the mock pages and as such couldn't have taken anything from the website.

The website is supposed to be a courier company website that should be as useful as possible.

I came up with a number of tasks that an average user who wants to ship anything would want to be able to complete on the website as fast as possible.

The forms are not functional and no single database work was done considering the fact it was a demo, emphasis is on logical navigation and clarity of tasks.

Could anyone comment or suggest on ways to better the design or layout of the website?

www.jwspreview.com/courier

Remember, it is the user that determines the success or otherwise of a website depending on how useful the website is in resolving problems or in providing relevant information.
WebmastersRe: Can You Make A Living Online? by Afam(m): 12:10pm On Jun 30, 2008
You can make a living online if you are selling anything that people are interested in buying whether products or services.

It is not about what you think people need but about what they need and are able to pay for.

Dell sells computers on the web and the company makes money because people buy computers from them.

Google makes money from advertisers by offer search services to the public

Web designers or programmers make money from clients for providing them services

Even scam artistes make money from unsuspecting people by selling information about how to make money on the web or off the web.

As long as you will not force anyone to buy whatever you sell it then means that what determines whether people will buy from you or not is the need and preference of the customer not what you as the product or service owner thinks the customer needs.
WebmastersRe: Your Server Down For How Many Times A Yr.? by Afam(m): 11:29am On Jun 30, 2008
Regardless of claims by web hosting companies about guaranteed server uptime the fact remains that the number of websites on any given server has a huge role to play on the reliability of the server itself because these websites will come with their unique visitors and all the work will be expected to be done or processed by the machine and this is where the processors of the machines come in, the higher the better.

A single server could host just 1, 500, or 5,000 websites so it is left for you to know which configuration will be more reliable than the rest.

All web servers should be configured to discourage downtime if possible all the time.

I have a dedicated server and I take time to fine tune the settings from the PHP to the MySQL database to ensure that things go well and that is assuming that the quality of the codes (especially for database driven websites) is ok because bad codes may hang or even crash a server.
WebmastersThe Facts About Us by Afam(op): 12:25am On Jun 29, 2008
The events of the last few days on this forum have once again confirmed the obvious about the web designers and web developers that make use of this forum. I have been tempted to ignore posts but I guess doing so before now would have given some of us the wrong belief that we are on top of what we are doing.

The following are facts

1. The quality of websites being developed for businesses in Nigeria remains poor, generally speaking.

2. Majority of us are experts at criticizing others, insulting others or abusing them

3. Quite a number of us who are supposed to be experts based on our claims have portfolios littered with other peoples' works

4. Those without portfolios are either bankers or claim they prefer to hide their websites for what ever reasons

5. Those of us that are programmers are still looking for good web designers to outsource projects to but I guess it may take eternity to see them as those that brag about their skills when called to task are no where to be found, they simply disappear or they come up with excuses why they have websites that are poorly setup.

I believe we all fit into one or more of the categories above.

Here is wishing you all good luck as you face the real challenges of web development as the bulk of the challenges are not on discussion forums but with the numerous clients and businesses that demand better websites.

If we can put in the amount of energies we expend on this forum attacking one another into building websites and web applications the sky would be the limit for a lot of you here.

And regardless of the name calling I believe there are people here who can make this change happen if only they can remain focused and do away with unnecessary rivalry and "my dad's car is bigger than yours" attitude.

Ladies and gentlemen, these past few days were indeed revealing and interesting.

Good luck once again and remain blessed (including the insulters and abusers)

NB: Considering the fact that many of us have been exposed what what we really are it makes no sense to continue to respond to insults from people, rather I will focus on real web development issues as there is nothing more to prove.

Who says there is something wrong with static website? You claim to be in school but cannot comprehend simple statements.

There is no end in site as regards the guy's stupidity. Which one is all sql injection techniques were not found before you got to age 20?

Do I have to explain every single statement to you? I thought you stated you were about 22 years and if that is correct I can assure you that I knew about SQL injections way back in 2003 and any serious programmer would know what to do to avoid such on his/her codes.

So telling me that facebook suffered sql injection does not support your very myopic view that the issue of sql injection is something new. You are indeed a complete slowpoke.
