Another dumb comment, I can assure you I was done with the dangers of SQL injection before you turned 20. You know what you are plain stupid, dumb and silly at the same time. |
I must confess the site you provided the link is cool. If you had implemented 1/4 of what you have on your own website (assuming you are the one working on the site anyway as I have seen more lies than truth on this from from web designers) I guess your website would have been a lot better. About when you started designing websites, it is not a matter of how long but how well. I will not ask for your portfolio, the link on your website should be able to point to it. |
Trust me when I say my eyes are already aching from reading all these claims without any proof whatsoever. Ok, you are a wonderful web designer. You work with programmers. So far the only website tied to your name is www.webworkstudios.net and unless you have not visited it even as the owner I am sure the website has no place on the web, non functional links, messages asking people to check back, check back to do what? Enough of the grammar and claims because close to 100% of the claims by your type on this forum have been exposed as lies. The other time it was banker at Zenith now I have to deal with your lies? Give me a break please. Lies will always be exposed. Meanwhile, thanks for the lecture. I never knew you were this daft. |
What more can I expect from someone who thinks that firefox helping scammers from Africa? You can keep misunderstanding my posts for all I care because I cannot split your brain open so you can comprehend my posts. You can come up with what you think my views are and aimlessly focus on them. Your level of comprehension is abysmally low I must confess and I will not spend time correcting you on such misunderstandings. And please, keep your respect, I don't need it neither have I asked for one, stick to the issues or go to bed. |
Unadulterated hypocrisy. And these gentlemen are active users of the most popular Nigerian owned website that is based on a free website script being used by hundreds of thousands if not millions of people worldwide. Many do not even bother to change any single thing, they just install and begin to use and as the owner of this forum is doing, he is very busy making money even from the same people that think that templates are bad yet some of them are quick to point you to other templates for you use while others maintain they have developed complex dynamic websites only that those websites are hidden from the public, viewable only by the designer and his laptop. In fairness to the second poster (Neptune) he has a very beautiful graphic on his website it is just that such graphic has no place in the web and frankly speaking the website is pretty useless. Check it out at www.webworkstudio.net As they say put your money where your mouth is. And yes, it is possible for people to ask you to setup websites for them by simply viewing websites you have done. That means they don't need proposals as they may have seen enough from people that claim everything and once they collect money they disappear. |
I see, so it is now a matter of shifting goal posts? Na wah oo. Well, since people outsource to you can you show me some of the websites you have done so I may consider outsourcing to you also? I am tired of looking for good web designers out there because those I have checked their portfolios here are either copying and pasting other peoples' works or they claim their web projects are not for public display (maybe they may have been setting up intranets for some people). |
My friend pay attention when reading posts. You specifically told me that the reason you do not get jobs is people you were younger and I told you that could not be correct as people will deal with you as long as you have quality products or services. I merely quoted you, we are not debating that. On the client you remembered, here is the story since you brought it up. Some called and wanted to see me and I asked him to come to the office and when he did he had 2 issues. 1. Web design 2. Web hosting As regards web design I could not do much because I made very clear my charge and considering the fact that he had already spent some money without achieving anything he could not make available the money and on projects I usually get paid before touching any project. Site credit belongs to whoever is designing or developing a website and the client would never have wanted to give your site credit to anyone. It is not done anywhere. As regards web hosting he stated that he got a web hosting package from someone on this forum and had over 250 email addresses and the server was almost always unreliable as the company in question could not access emails and they do a lot of email communications. I told him we do not compromise on server reliability and we could provide him one that will effortlessly support over 250 active and busy email addresses. That I provided and not even once for close to 1 year now has there been any complaints whatsoever. So my dear, I am not here to expose you for what you are, you are already doing a good job of it yourself. If you remember another client I may furnish you with the details. |
By the very nature of the web it is clear that websites are designed or developed with the intention to provide or display information to people on the web. That means anyone connected to the internet would be able to access the websites unless some form of user authentication is required. However, it is not what people do on the websites that I am talking about now, it is about the very existence of such websites. In Nigeria today, no doubt the quality of websites (including those developed by myself) could be better. This is a bitter fact. I also believe that we have a lot of young talented Nigerians that could become change agents in this regard and these people can come up with very functional and stunning websites if only they can take time to understand what works and what doesn't work on the web and of course if they can take time to learn what they don't know especially in an environment where people want to get rich fast. My worry is this, there are quite a lot of web designers in Nigeria that claim to be experts in web design, others claim to have developed complex dynamic websites while others believe that they know all about web development and they do not hesitate to point out issues with the works of others (that is when they are not insulting or abusing other developers). So, my question is this - Where are these websites these people have designed or developed? Are they on the web? If yes, where, if no why claim that they have done so? Granted, some websites (like financial institutions and security agencies) would not want the information about the developer displayed on their websites for various reasons. I have developed websites where I charged for them not to have my "powered by justwebservices" displayed at the footer area. Assuming some of us believe they need not display their works on a public forum at least we read newspapers, we are on the web and somehow the owners of these fantastic websites would one way or the other advertise them for the world to see. But what we still have out there are majority of not too good websites and/or badly setup ones so WHERE ARE THOSE WEBSITES SOME OF US CLAIM TO HAVE DEVELOPED HIDDING? Websites are not meant to be hidden and a lot of Nigerians really need to see the fantastic websites out there unless these websites exist in our subconscious minds and in dreams. Even the bible told us that you cannot put a lit lantern under the bed, you usually put it on top of the table not so? |
mambenanje:1. When did anyone here conduct any survey for this mambenanje to claim that we are talking about corporate sites here? 2. That some companies have very flashy websites doesn't mean that their websites are really useful. The reason why some of these companies have not done anything to get more functional (as in tasks that can be accomplished by users) websites is that the management in most cases don't even understand the web and these people are at the mercy of the web designer who may be itching to unleash his/her latest graphic skills on the website. And again, most of these websites do not depend on the website to make any money. For some, it is just a status thing. 3. The content in bold above represents the most embarrassing statement from someone that claims to understand the web. A website (nairaland) that is perhaps the most visited website owned by a Nigerian which should really be a good example of what a functional website should be like is being dismissed as a website that does not represent any firm and that the site was meant to be simple so as to sustain thousands of users. My dear, I repeat once again you know very little about the web. Why do you think google even displays the speed of the search query and results? To tell you that speed matters to them and that in fact they are more interested in getting you off their websites as fast as possible by retrieving the results you wanted as fast as possible. They make money from advertisement and the longer you spend on that site searching for one thing the more you are wasting their server resources. The good thing about a forum like this is this - it gives us enough time to show the world how we think and how we comprehend information. Now that the insults and abuses have subsided those who felt they could just abuse others and forget about the issues raised having nothing reasonable to put down. Some have gone round the bend, the chicken has finally come to roost and some are shooting themselves with their ill thought out comments. A functional website that is not flashy will win anyday when compared to a flashy website that is not functional. Had a meeting with someone this afternoon and after agreeing to what I proposed for his website when it got to the issue of money he stated that his younger brother has a website and the web designer charged him about 50% of what I demanded. I told him that if he was satisfied with the website his brother has then of course it makes sense for him to go with his own designer especially when his own price is even cheaper. Asked if I could come down I said no and when I got up to leave he said I should start immediately on the website and the payment will be done on Monday. My point is this, people are often faced with the views of whoever they are discussing website projects with. Just as a referee cannot do more than he knows some web designers can only advice clients based on what they know. Whether what they know is best for the client or not is another thing altogether. |
ZUBY77:I thought I was the person being abused and insulted here, maybe words have lost their meanings on nairaland. I post some websites for reviews and I get insults from people, I respond to the insults and pigs like this very zuby77 turns around and sees Afam as the aggressor. webemerald:Well, I am waiting to see single pages being listed as your web projects. Maybe setting up a contact form on someone's site will qualify you to list the complete website or the single page as a project that we should learn from. Point us to live websites my friend and not websites that were copied and pasted in folders on your server. Is that too difficult to do? |
acreontop:Thanks for your sincerity, I agree with you it is a template I developed and I intend to use that template to setup different test sites for different businesses. With that in place all one needs to do is to see the functionality your site can have and based on specific design or layout requests you implement them. Some businesses have indeed seen the site and some have decided to get them for their own websites because the site will enable them do what they want to do which is simply to showcase their products to the general public. |
OmniPotens:You see my man, this is why you fail. This is not about Afam, it is about what Afam believes, it is about a way of doing things. Learn to separate issues from personalities. Little minds discuss people, haven't you heard that before? I simply went to see how you have implemented all the advice you freely give and found your own very website to be in a mess. Physician, heal thyself. |
@smartsoft, I have personally spoken to clients that came to my office to ask for redesign who claim you setup websites for them. Need I say more? Again, remember you told me once that the reason you do not get jobs is because you are younger in age when you asked me how old I was. Your personal insults will not be responded to in kind because that would be too harsh considering your situation now. @topic, A few clarifications lest people fight over what they are clearly misunderstanding. 1. Functionality is more important than beauty. This is my position and this does not in any way mean that a website should not be good looking. Comparing 2 things doesn't mean that it is 100% or nothing for either options. 2. I have repeated it over and over again that I am a web programmer not a web designer so the issue of being no 1 web developer is baseless. However, I have tried to get to see actual works of many on this forum who criticize the most so that I can ask them to handle web design jobs but each time I visit their websites I find enough reasons to continue with what I am doing the way I am doing them. I have already listed names of such people before and you can confirm from their own websites. 3. @tundewoods, public enemy no 1? I would rather be that than be a hypocrite or just join the bandwagon in order to belong. That is why Nigeria isn't working because you have a lot of sycophants around. My opinions are mine and I cannot remember forcing anyone to agree with them. Unfortunately, some of you have never been in situations where you need to use logic, reason and common sense to win debates or arguments rather you think insults and abuses would help. 4. @mambenanje, I have stated it before I think I have a problem with the way you understand or misunderstand issues. How can I ask people to forget design and use what I develop as standards? Please, learn to see beyond your nose and stop the too much emphasis on Afam. Learn to separate issues from personalities. I have a problem with the way you think, not with you as a person because you may have other positives. |
webemerald:Guy, nice try as you have removed some of them and added new ones even when some of them do not have any information that would help one know the developer. Some are not live or the live links are not provided as I can copy 50 different websites and put them in 50 different folders on my main website and remove or add any copyright information. Was this developed by you http://nigeriapolice.org? |
tundewoods:Exactly my point, you once started a thread asking people to list their web applications and you listed 2. What part of flaunting was that? It seems you have quickly forgotten what you told me some weeks ago when you contacted me via chat about going into programming and leaving the other people to focus on web design. So much so for collaboration, little wonder you were asking for help to setup a simple search form for a project you were working on. You don't have them, it is not that you don't want to list them. I post sites for reviews here not a list of clients. tundewoods:As basic as you claim it is can you come up with one without dead links and non functional search forms? You brag and claim to design complex web applications when you cannot point to them, rather you hide under the banner that you don't need to show them in a public forum. @mambenanje, Age does not have anything to do with this so do not use that as an excuse. I have seen the portfolio page you provided and I wonder what makes you feel the designs there are sleek or fantastic. |
I think the poster is faced with the problem of creating a complex search form and/or query and he needs help. Or, am I wrong? |
mambenanje:Without meaning to disrespect you I dare state that you are simply clueless when it comes to the web and I believe a whole lot of people have told you the same thing. It is better for you to state that you do not understand something or that you need clarifications before making some of those baseless and incredible remarks you make about stuff on the web. Certification? List 1 or 2 websites you have designed let us see what the certification you so recommend has done for you. tundewoods:Can we see the complex web applications please because on this forum one cannot be sure of what people claim these days and it is important we substantiate any claims we make otherwise someone will tell us he was the person that developed google or yahoo but chose to sell it to those we know today. |
Won't be surprised if an insurance broker comes along and decides to offer advice like this frustrated girl. @hanen, Try to get laid, get yourself a boyfriend or husband, it will help you a great deal. You can even buy one these days. |
@hanen, What can I say to an unmarried frustrated lady working at Zenith bank? This is what you end up with after chasing men up and down to open accounts with your bank. I hope to be proven wrong one day, I maintain that those who scream and insult others have absolutely nothing to offer as far as web development is concerned and they try to make themselves feel good by insulting others. Wish you luck as you sleep your way to the top as it is obvious that you won't have much to offer in the banking industry. Before you start complaining about Nigerian men try to organize yourself first. Any reviews from a web developer out there? I don't need single frustrated bankers offering useless advice on those sites. |
@hanen, Are you a web designer or developer? If yes, can you point to anything you have done so I can appreciate your comments as I am indeed sick and tired of clowns that provide all the advice on planet earth and yet they develop rubbish for themselves and for their clients. At least the 4 I have checked out after they used all sorts of words on me and my projects have been exposed as very bad designers even when they claim to know it all. Of course people like you may be ashamed to put up anything as your own site may not be able to stand any scrutiny. It is easy for any clown to visit a forum and pretend to know something even if the person is cursed. It you were brought up like a human being you should learn to ignore threads you don't like rather than making it clear that your clueless parents made a huge mistake bringing you into this world. It is not about what idiots like you think, it is about what matters to business owners. |
You or your friends or even members of this forum are not in any position to determine what you need for the database. It is the requirement from the school that will determine that. Unless you have a blank cheque to develop whatever you want and deliver the to school. |
In my quest to get a good web designer that I can outsource websites to as usual I followed the link to one of the critic's website www.webworkstudio.net (by the way Neptune, you got your website name wrong, check your profile page). I met a black page and on clicking to proceed to the main page I came across a very beautiful design (unfortunately, on the web such graphics have no place) and non functional links. After about 10 minutes I was still seeing 7% (I guess the flash work was still loading) and a small message that says I should check back very soon. A link to his featured works work have helped me but there was no link on that phrase. From timmy, webemerald and now Neptune one thing is common, these people will effortlessly abuse you based on your works and when you try to see what they have done you realize they have nothing to offer and in my opinion their comments are usually based on envy rather any other thing. Maybe the fact that they cannot do anything other than static websites is too hard for them to swallow. As they say empty barrels make the most noise. Still on the search for a good web designer I can outsource websites to? Any takers? |
If there is one thing that is a fact in the business of web development in Nigeria it is the disconnect between what the web designers believe is best for their clients and what is actually the best for them. Comments and suggestions from many web designers who are more interested in showcasing their skills sometimes to the detriment of the businesses they are supposed to provide functional websites for tend to point to one thing, "the client must agree to my idea of a good website or the client is missing the point". It is not uncommon to visit sites that are not functional yet have all the pictures, animations and color combinations in the world to contend with. The result? The typical client spends a year or two and decides to close down the website because it does not add any value to the business. Even banks have been known to have used 2 or more domain names (due to issues with the web designers) before reaching a stable web experience. Bad news they say sell faster and before you know it the client's friends, business associates and relations get to hear how useless having a website is, thanks to the web designer who thinks websites begins and ends with flash and animations. For the web designer, potential clients are discouraged while others are closing down their websites due to the fact that the websites are not useful. Now, they resort to looking for someone to blame. I develop websites and I do place a lot of emphasis on functionality because that is the reason why people use to web, people do not visit websites simply because they are beautiful, they do so because they are able to complete certain tasks be it looking for information, checking out the prices of certain goods, after sales support, news, reading and sending emails etc. The bottom line is this, if your website is not task focused and by extension useful to the web user no matter how beautiful the website is sooner rather than later you will close down the website. Interestingly, many businesses are looking for developers that can revamp their websites simply because quite a number of them cannot justify the money being spent on such websites. This is real and it is happening now. The trend is changing, we are gradually moving away from "I want the flashiest website" to "I want my customers to be able to do this and that on my website" and this is good news. Of course, people will always resist change especially when such changes tend to radically show that their views, opinions or preferences no longer hold water or when clients begin to demand more from web developers that can only play around with colors and images. Some have queried and wondered why certain people keep getting jobs even when the self proclaimed experts are looking for jobs where as others sit behind their computers and offer all the advice in the world even when they have never come close to designing websites or writing codes. The time is now for change and as they say the only permanent thing in life is change and this change has come to stay, scream, abuse or curse all you want the good news is that the power to effect the change lies in the hands of the clients not the web designers. Just as VCD makers have been taken out of the market as people now have DVD options where up to 80 films are stored in a single DVD very soon the web designers will wake up one morning and realize that programming, functionality and simplicity have all taken over the terrain they once controlled because the clients were not well informed on what they can achieve with their websites. A website must be neat, usable, easy to navigate, fast loading and functional for it to succeed. If anyone tells you anything to the contrary just know that the person is trying to justify his/her lack of skills to develop functional websites. The most visited website in Nigeria (owned by a Nigerian) I believe in Nairaland and this website is based on a functional website script that is even implemented by hundreds of thousands of people if not millions and yet people visit it everyday. Same design, same layout, same source and yet the website is very useful. Even cars, regardless of your status or preference you have to buy the latest model of any car unless you want custom built one which is not common. I wonder why the car makers are not thinking of building different styles (within the same model) to suit the large market. |
Boy! This is getting interesting. I ask for a review and people want to force their opinions on me and even when they are the first to use abusive words they end up claiming that Afam is insulting anyone. To those that have offered advice thanks. Implement them and let us see. For the records I have again been insulted by the likes of hanen and tomorrow he will talk about being insulted. I will not respond in kind this time as doing so will make his day. If anyone does not like the design the person can commit suicide for all I care. There are people here that claim to be experts and their own websites are worse of. Ok, I am willing to outsource the design, where are the good web designers here? Webemerald? Timmy? These 2 I know have pasted other peoples work on their portfolio pages and claimed to have designed the sites. Let the list of good designers come up and let us see their works. You cannot be a web design expert only on forums. |
Thanks. I think I will appreciate it if some of you guys develop some of these websites for clients either for free or for a fee so that we can all see these unique designs. There is a disconnect between what you want me to do and what you implement on your own websites. You may need to check why facebook is doing better than myspace because in terms of design I believe myspace is more attractive. |
mambenanje:Thanks for your comments and the link. I visited the site and the templates on the link you provide would be most inappropriate for products. Correct me if I am wrong. I simply followed the link to clarify things for myself. Neptune:Thanks for the advice but I believe I should bother myself trying to design sites because you have not provided me with alternatives. I believe it was crystal clear from my post that the sites were from a basic platform. Now you point me to a website that is using a template for osCOmmerce, an open source ecommerce CMS that I used some years ago. How many people do you think actually makes use of that template? 1, 10, 100, 1000 or 1 million? I am not here to think about 2 or 3 furniture firms, you could have 100 or 200 of them and when you do what do you do? Change the background of the same template you asked me to use? OmniPotens:Thanks for your advice, however the main problem is what do you do to carter for hundreds of clients who may be in the same line of business? This is the main issue. Google could have come up with entirely different layouts for with millions of users around the world, don't you think? @topic, The problem with basically all the advice I have read here is the same, no one has been able to point to unique designs or layouts especially for more than 1 or 2 websites. I really do not understand the motives of people who will effortlessly condemn and not be able to provide alternatives. So, choosing a template that maybe 1 million people are using makes more sense than using one that is unique and not used by say 5 people? I respect the opinions of others even when I will not agree with them if I have good reasons not to. I do not even need to download any of the templates as they can be replicated with ease but the main thing here is - why use them at all when they are open to millions of people all over the world? |
mambenanje:Thanks for your advice but could you tell me why you prefer a template that you have not pointed to yet? There are good templates and there are bad ones. Could you point me to one that you believe is ok bearing in mind simplicity? |
While I agree that there are a lot of things that could be developed other than social networking sites however I think it is wrong for you to claim that Nigeria programmers are dumb because the craze for social networking sites is not limited to Nigeria alone especially since the likes of facebook, myspace etc started making a lot of money. |
Thanks. The truth of the matter is that I am thinking of using the platform as a standard one so that developing a website for any client will be easy and fast. Can we really have unique layouts for say 1000 clients? In theory yes but in practice it will be another wahala altogether. I don't want to focus on the unique designs but on the functionalities that many of the websites out there lack. Many companies are revamping their websites as they demand more, more than just combination of colors and animations. |
Hello, I would appreciate comments and/or criticisms on the layout of the 2 websites below. www.tonarcinvestment.com - Content from client not yet added. www.jwspreview.com/furniture - Meant for a furniture company but not yet on its own domain |
fransois_1:You cannot successfully promote a bad product. You have stated that the process is slow and those who should be more concerned care less, what do you expect web developers to do? Ask their clients to wait forever for domain names when others are registering other domains in a matter of seconds or minutes? I guess politics messed everything up as many groups just thought about the money to be made without taking time to understand what it takes to setup and maintain a reliable IT infrastructure. |
There are machines that can host 50,000 websites just as these machines can handle 500 websites. It all boils down to reliability of the servers in question and a server with fewer websites will certainly be more reliable all other things being equal. But it seems that the best way for customers to know which is which is for them to try and see as you will never have shortage of people that will promise everything under the sun just to get hold of your money. |
