The choice of material for sand filling depends on the area and budget. Most areas where the laterite is being used as filling sand have low water table. However for swamp or reclaimed land like Lekki and environs, with very high water table, laterite is not a good filling material. Instead the sharp sand ( white) is used because of it's poor capillarity which prevent water from rising. Another reason why laterite is also commonly used is because of its availability and price. This can work very well in storey buildings and we are actually constructing a two storey building. Lintels are supports over openings not necessarily around the perimeter of the building as some do unless the openings are more around the perimeter. The choice of chain lintel is a personal one not structural. quote author=Hatesin post=103269821] No chain lintel? Can this work in a storey building?
|

Rebars for the second floor slab and beams

Sorry about the partial collapse of your building but when and how did it occur. A closer look at the building shows there are no columns on the building, the floor slab thickness is too small and I guess the mix ratios for the mortar and concrete works were weak as well. Your building was poorly constructed..The quality of workmanship here is poor and not the size the sandcrete blocks. You need to discontinue the construction and get a structural engineer to do a comprehensive assessment of your building. FreeConCiencE: |

An estimate of about 30-40million depending on your choice of finishing. Homextras: |
Yes this will cut cost because the volume of concrete and steel used in ribbed floor slabs are smaller when compared to the solid floor slab options. However this floor type is economical where the span is large and there is need to reduce the weight on the building. (quote author=bolu1986 post=102793066]Will this cut cost? Rib slab
|
Columns transfer the loads from the beams and slab to the footings. The footing then spread this load over the soil through the column base / foundation. In this case the ground floor is the one carrying/ supporting the column load and the column acts as a point load on the floor slab. Well there might be a deflection of the slab at that point which might result to cracks or even depression of portions of the slab. FreeConCiencE: |

I agree. This solution I'm not okay with it. The new engineer has only increased the dead load on the structure in a bid to solve a problem . He ended up adding more load on the foundation and stressing the beams and columns. I always advice that levels should be taken before lintel and floor (decking) formwork is done to correct any uneveness in the structure. Sorry about this. Good that the issue is being resolved. n3xt: |

How do people pack undies for someone else to wash for them. These are personal items. Well charge more for the undies since they can't wash their own undies. Simple. |
