Former Haitian President Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, who returned to Haiti after 25 years in exile, has died, President Michel Matelly announced Saturday.

“On behalf of the entire government and the Haitian people, I want to seize this sad opportunity to transfer my sincere sympathies to the family, ‎his close friends and supporters around the country,” Martelly said in a statement.

Several of Duvalier’s friends told the Miami Herald that they learned Saturday of the former dictator’s death.

‎Richard Sassine, a longtime friend of Duvalier, said he received a call Saturday morning informing him that Duvalier had died after suffering a heart attack at home in the Port-au-Prince mountaintop suburb community of Thomassin.

Duvalier, 63, had just recently been discharged from a hospital after being bitten on the leg by a tarantula, Sassine said.

A nurse at Canapé Vert Hospital said Duvalier checked in on Sept. 22 and checked out Sept. 25. He was also a diabetic, according to a friend, and was hospitalized several times since his return to Haiti.

“He was a gentle giant,” Sassine said, “not this tyrant, people say, who ruled Haiti during the Cold War. He wasn’t my friend the president; he was my friend Jean-Claude.”

Duvalier was the subject of an ongoing trial into human rights abuses during his reign.

Sassine said Duvalier’s death is a huge loss to Haiti. Duvalier had been working on a book in which he planned to make several revelations, helping people to better understand him and his controversial rule.

“He had so much he could have told people about Haiti in the 1970s and ’80s. People would have understood certain things,” Sassine said. “He knew so much about so many things. I wish he had finished his book. Either way, it should be partly published.”

On Feb. 7, 1986, Duvalier was driven from Haiti in disgrace. He returned in 2011, to much shock from the global community; he would later be indicted on human rights abuses and corruption after victims of his regime brought charges against him.

In the wake of Duvalier’s return, there had been speculation about whether he would again participate in politics, fueled further when his political party opened a headquarters in the southern part of Haiti.

But Sassine, who saw Duvalier regularly, said he had grown disillusioned with Haiti’s politics.

“He said his time had passed, and what Haiti required to fix it, he could not do,” Sassine said. “He practically gave up political life, and was enjoying life. He loved Haiti.”

In Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, the phone rang at Libreri Mapou bookstore. Owner Jan Mapou listened to the caller’s news: Duvalier is dead.

He had already heard the same from someone who had popped into the small store.

News of Duvalier’s death seemed to pour in slowly, through word of mouth and Haitian radio.

Mapou was still reflecting on the news early Saturday afternoon.

“It’s too early. I don’t know the consequences,” he said. “The son, I don’t know, because I left Haiti in 1971.”

But other community leaders say they know enough of Duvalier to form an opinion. Some held a news conference Saturday after, where they called for a trial even after Duvalier’s death. And they took the opportunity to criticize the current Haitian government and U.S. policy toward the country, including immigration laws.

“The sad part is Duvalier passed without facing a trial, without being in front of a judge,” said Tony Jeanthenor, vice chair of Veye Yo, a Haitian activist organization. “We expect to at least have a postmortem trial. We don’t expect this from the regime in Haiti right now. This regime is trying to emulate Duvalier.”

Jack Lieberman, a refugee advocate, said the Martelly government has refused to hold elections, banned political opposition parties and imprisoned dissidents, “all with US support.”

“So I’m sad to say history repeats itself. And until there’s an accounting for the crimes that were done, history will continue to repeat itself. We need to change U.S. policy toward Haiti. We need respect, first of all, for human rights and democracy, and an end to the legacy of Duvalierism, which is being continued by this government,” Lieberman said.

Lieberman and Jeanthenor stressed the harshness of Duvalier’s dictatorship.

“Any time you take a chance to criticize the Duvalier regime, you are either put in jail or you are either killed, or you are either exiled. If you were lucky, you were exiled,” Jeanthenor said. “You are a nonhuman under the Duvalier regime.”

Back in Haiti, Michele Montas, a former Haitian journalist and a victim of Duvalier’s regime, told the Miami Herald, “it’s unfortunate he died in his bed, and we were unable to try him. For the people who fought against him, it’s not over yet. It isn’t just a fight against Jean-Claude, but the people who supported his administration,” she added. “To us, the fight isn’t over.”

Montas said Martelly, who has shown an affinity for the former president and his rule, may decide to give him a national funeral. That would be a shame, she said.

“Someone who was indicted of human rights violations and crimes against humanity be honored in a national funeral,” she said.

Reed Brody of Human Rights Watch, which has been supporting Duvalier's victims with their trial, said Duvalier’s victims would have wanted to see him on trial.

“Duvalier's rule was marked by systematic human rights violations. Hundreds of political prisoners held in a network of prisons died from mistreatment or were victims of extrajudicial killings. Duvalier's government repeatedly closed independent newspapers and radio stations. Journalists were beaten, in some cases tortured, jailed and forced to leave the country,” Brody said. “Duvalier’s death deprives Haitians of what could have been the most important human rights trial in the country’s history.”

Sandra Honoré , the United Nations special representative in Haiti, said Duvalier’s death should not end efforts toward accountability.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti. The return of the former President to Haiti in 2011 presented an opportunity for the country to comprehensively address the painful memories of its recent past through the required processes of accountability and of reconciliation, the pursuit of which should continue,” she said.

DUVALIER TIMELINE

Here is a brief chronology of milestones in the life of former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier:

▪ April 1971: Haitian dictator Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier dies and his teenage son, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, becomes the country's president for life under a constitutional amendment that allowed "Papa Doc" to name his replacement. "Baby Doc" is just 19.

▪ April 1985: After protests by religious groups against Duvalier's leadership, bloody confrontations are sparked between anti-government demonstrators and Duvalier's private militia, called Tonton Macoutes.

▪ Nov. 27, 1985: Three students are slain by security forces in Gonaives in the first of several bloody confrontations with anti-government demonstrators.

▪ December 1985: Protests broaden across the impoverished country. Duvalier orders significant reshuffle of his Cabinet.

▪ January 1986: Duvalier's administration closes schools and universities and forbids radio stations to report on the turmoil engulfing the country. More than 50 people are killed in disturbances, most by Tonton Macoutes. Duvalier declares 30-day state of siege.

▪ Jan. 31, 1986: Following weeks of unrest, White House spokesman Larry Speakes announces the collapse of the Duvalier government, a report that is later denied by Haitian and U.S. officials.

▪ Feb. 7, 1986: Duvalier and relatives fly to France aboard U.S. military jet. National Council of Government, consisting of three military men and two civilians, led by Duvalier's army chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy, takes power. The country is destitute.

▪ Feb. 10, 1986: Provisional government, headed by Namphy, names 19-member Cabinet. It dissolves Assembly and Tonton Macoutes, reopens schools, frees political prisoners, and seeks to recover Duvaliers' assets. U.S. aid resumes, after being halted because of Duvalier abuses.

▪ March 29, 1987: Constitution bars Duvalierists from candidacy for 10 years.

▪ May 2007: A Geneva court temporarily blocks the release of some of the $6.2 million stashed in Switzerland by Duvalier. Many in Haiti considered the money to have been stolen from public funds before Duvalier was ousted.

▪ August 2007: Swiss government extends a freeze on Duvalier's funds for a year.

▪ February 2010: In a reversal, Switzerland's top court says at least $4.6 million in Swiss bank accounts previously awarded to charities must be returned to the family of Duvalier.

▪ Jan. 16, 2011: Duvalier returns to Haiti after nearly 25 years in exile as Haiti struggles to recover from a devastating earthquake, deadly cholera outbreak, and an electoral crisis. Two days later, he is charged with corruption and theft. He is released, but ordered to remain in Haiti.

▪ Feb. 28, 2013: Appearing frail, Duvalier appears in court and defends himself against accusations of human rights abuses. It is his only court appearance before his death in 2014.

In March of 2011 I accompanied Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide on his trip home to Haiti following years of forced exile in South Africa. I did so in support of Haitian democracy and Aristide’s civil rights, and in protest against my country’s role in illegally removing him from power in 2004 and then preventing him from returning to his native land for seven long years. Today, Haitian democracy and the rights of Aristide are again under threat and the U.S. government appears to be turning a blind eye.

Since returning to Haiti, Aristide has focused his energy on rebuilding and reactivating a medical university that he founded in 2001 and that had been closed down during his time in exile. Though he hasn’t been directly involved in politics, he remains a popular figure and is the leader of Fanmi Lavalas (FL) – a political party that has won the majority of votes in every election in which it has participated. However, FL has been kept off the ballot by Haiti’s authorities ever since the 2004 coup that led to Aristide’s forced exile.

Haiti’s parliamentary elections, originally scheduled for 2011, are now three years overdue and the UN and other foreign entities have repeatedly called for them to take place before the end of the year. With Aristide back in Haiti it would appear to be more difficult this time around for the government to prevent FL from participating. This is perhaps why the deposed president is once again under attack.

Last month, a Haitian judge reportedly issued an arrest warrant for Aristide. The case being mounted against him reeks of political persecution directly tied to efforts to suppress a popular alternative to the current administration of Michel Martelly, who is supported by conservative Haitian elites and the U.S.

The charges against Aristide stem from an investigation conducted by the illegal government established by the 2004 U.S.-backed coup. Under that government, human rights researchers found that some 4,000 people were killed for political reasons, while many others were imprisoned on bogus charges. Despite his powerful enemies’ best efforts, and a grand jury investigation in the U.S., no evidence has been produced that could support criminal charges against Aristide. In the meantime, the persecution of Lavalas and human rights defenders continues. On August 20, Lavalas activist Clifford Charles was killed following a protest demanding the release of fellow activist Louima Louis Juste.

The judge who issued the warrant for Aristide’s arrest has been disbarred from practicing law for 10 years – as soon as he steps down from his position as judge – for his role in the arrest last year of Andre Michel, an attorney investigating corruption within the Martelly administration. Lawyers for Aristide contend that they never received the initial summons from the judge and that when they did go to the court at the required time, the judge himself was a no-show. Now, in an apparent attempt at saving-face, the judge has ordered house arrest for Aristide, something that is not even legal in Haiti. The National Network for the Defense of Human Rights, Haiti’s most prominent human rights organization, has pointed out that these are not the actions of a neutral third-party.

On the night of September 11th, Haitian authorities went a step further, removing the security detail that had been with Aristide since his return from exile, a move that put him, his family, and his supporters at risk. Haitian press reports indicate that the command came not from the National Police, who have been reluctant to act against Aristide, but straight from the National Palace. The message was chilling and clear: the government can and will stop offering protection to the former president whenever it chooses to do so.

Is the government scared of facing Fanmi Lavalas in a free and fair election? President Martelly was elected in 2011, but only after intervention by the U.S. and its key partners, who arbitrarily overturned the results of the first round, thereby putting Martelly into the run-off election. Voter participation barely reached 20 percent.

The U.S. government was one of the main funders of those flawed elections and a major funder of the elections of 2006 and 2009, all of which excluded Fanmi Lavalas. The U.S. is also expected to provide key funding for the next elections, if and when they end up taking place. If elections aren’t held by the end of the year, terms will expire for the majority of the senate and the entire chamber of deputies, effectively letting the president rule by decree. My country’s government is a de facto, if not active supporter of this rampant curtailing of democracy.

It’s time to end the campaign of attacks against Aristide and Fanmi Lavalas once and for all. Aristide, like all Haitian citizens, must be allowed to participate in politics without fear and intimidation being the norm. My government has been complicit in undermining Haitian democracy for many years now – from the 1991 CIA-backed coup against the first Lavalas administration to the U.S. Administration’s last-ditch effort to prevent Aristide from returning to Haiti in 2011.

This needs to change. The U.S. government should stand by its professed support for democracy and development and stop standing in the way of the popular will of the Haitian people.

Michele Bennett is the former wife of Haitian dictator Jean Claude Duvalier and one of the most reviled figures in the country's history. Part Alexis Carrington, part Imelda Marcos, the mere mention of her name often spurs outrage as the memory of her reign in the eighties leaves her in the company of infamous usurpers of power in the heart of the Haitian people


Michele Bennett was born to an affluent and influential family in Port Au Prince. Her father, Ernest Bennett, was a wealthy businessman and so were many of her uncles. One uncle was Francois-Wolff Ligonde, the first Haitian archbishop, who himself would soon be reviled by the people for his involvement in political affairs and encouragement of a military coup against president Jean Bertrand Aristide years later.


Michele attended St-Mary’s School in Peekskill New York and worked in midtown Manhattan as a secretary on Fashion Avenue. Ironically, her first marriage was to Alix Pasquet Jr, whose father Captain Alix Pasquet Sr, had attempted to overthrow Papa Doc in 1958 and was subsequently captured and executed.


A divorcee with two children when she returned to Port Au Prince, she worked at Habitation Leclerc , a posh hotel in Port Au Prince.


In 1980, two years after her return she married Jean Claude Duvalier, who had been since the death of his father in nine years earlier. Her wedding created awe and outrage, a posh affair that can best be described as the Caribbean version of the Charles and Diana royal wedding in lavishness and excess, The wedding cost approximately US$3 million.

Two more children were born out of that union. Shortly after the wedding she took control of the national palace. Many say that Jean Claude was actually scared of her as she was ruthless. Her ruthlessness and cruelty reverberated through the streets of Haiti as well as inside the Palace. She ostracized the Duvaliers and brought her own family into the fold, moving many into the Palace, and exiling Duvaliers. The main target was Baby Doc’s mother Simone who exerted great influence on her dictator son, even more so after the passing of his father Francois.

Michele Bennett then gave her father lucrative business inroads for him to conduct his affairs, sometimes legal, sometimes shady, including rumored drug trafficking. Her own brother was arrested in Porto Rico fror drug trafficking and served a prison sentence.




Her opulent lifestyle turned off the Haitian people but she was able to offset public outcry with acts of largesse, often televised. Her charitable acts even garnered praise from Mother Teresa, who from the outside looking in, was totally unaware of the plundering taking place.


The shopping sprees in New York, London and Paris were the stuff of legends. Millions were being spent on jewelry, artwork, shoes and furs, her favorite, despite the fact she was the first lady of a tropical country.

When the Duvaliers were ousted from power in 1986, Michele looted the country’s coffers and took off for France, the colonizer who imprisons Haitians greats and harbors Haiti’s worst.


Within four years, her and Baby Doc were divorced and at each other’s throats for the remainder of the fortunes that were stolen from the Haitian people. Michele had since relocated and cohabitated with another man,one of the grounds for divorce according to Jean Claude. A raid on their French estate caught Michele attempting to flush a notebook, containing a listing of her expenses. They were in the millions.


Today, Bennett lives in France, still enjoying a life of comfort with her divorce settlement, never having had to face justice for her kleptomania.

Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier died of a heart attack in Port-au-Prince at the age of 63, a family member told CNN Saturday.

Known by his nickname "Baby Doc," the so-called "President for life" actually fled Haiti in 1985 and stunned Haiti when he returned 25 years later.

He was charged with human rights crimes within days of his return, but he successfully argued in court that the statute of limitations had expired on charges that included torture, rape and extrajudicial killings.

Human rights groups decried the court ruling that spared Duvalier.

Duvalier inherited the title of "President for life" in 1971 upon the death of his father, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier, who had ruled with an iron fist through his paramilitary force, the Tonton Macoute.

Just 19 years old when he came to power, Baby Doc became one of the world's youngest heads of state.

Haitians initially celebrated his ascension, thinking the young man would be less oppressive than his father, but that didn't turn out to be the case.

Duvalier used his father's security apparatus to continue ruling in a totalitarian fashion.

His 15 years of rule were a time of repression in Haiti that included the torture of opponents and the taking of political prisoners.

In addition, there were allegations that "Baby Doc" embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International had documented what they call systematic human rights violations under Duvalier's rule. Both organizations accuse Duvalier of imprisoning and torturing hundreds of Haitians, including journalists, and using violent means to silence voices of opposition.

Amnesty gave the public prosecutor in the Duvalier case 100 documents that it said detailed cases of human rights violations.

Amnesty International's documents told the experiences of cobblers, taxi drivers, filmmakers, mechanics, distillers and even hairdressers, all of whom, they say, were arrested for anti-government activity.[/b]

It took Cameroon and Nigeria decades to settle their territorial dispute over the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula.

An agreement was reached in 2008, but it still has not brought security for the people who live along the border.

The Bakassi people have been protesting against their conditions. Many of them say they fled the region due to attacks by Cameroonian security forces.

Note from BW of Brazil: I must say that after reading the news last week I was little disgusted and disappointed. About what, you ask? Well, for the past few weeks, this blog has featured a number of articles detailing the controversy surrounding the new television series Sexo e as negas on Brazil’s most dominant TV network, Rede Globo. Black women across the country have repudiated the show and to stomp out the resistance, Globo is now resorting to the second step in its manipulation program: to deflect accusations of racism, well-known Afro-Brazilians are publicly announcing their support of the show. After all, if there are blacks who support the show, it can’t possibly be racist, right? Since then, a number of prominent black public have stepped forward and done just that. Yesterday on the blog you saw Grammy-nominated musician Carlinhos Brown voice his support for the show on a top (Globo) talk show. There have been others as well who will be featured in an upcoming post. And then there was the nation’s only predominantly black college opening its doors to the show’s creator.

Sexo e as negas creator Miguel Falabella announced last week that Faculdade Zumbi dos Palmares contacted him to participate in its annual Troféu Raça Negra award ceremony. It’s not clear exactly what this meant. The Troféu Raça Negra awards, something like the American Essence Awards or NAACP Awards (although it bills itself as the “Black Oscars”), presents awards to Afro-Brazilians of highlight in the year or those who contribute to the Afro-Brazilian cause. Was Falabella to receive an award? Present an award? Or have some sort of debate about race in the media? It’s still not clear. In my view, it doesn’t matter. How does the nation’s only predominantly black college whose aim is to address exclusion and racial inequality invite someone who many in the black community see as selling a highly racist, stereotypical representation of the black population to a wide audience? What is the message here? A white director can present the black population in any way that he chooses and the black population should still be thankful for this? Not feeling this action AT ALL!! And as it turns out, students at the college are not feeling it either!

Miguel Falabella suffered criticism because of his new Globo TV program Sexo e as negas. The series, that debuted last Tuesday, the 16th, portrays the everyday lives of four friends in the Cidade Alta region of Cordovil, a community in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. On Thursday (18) of last week, in the meantime, the actor and director revealed in his Facebook profile that he had been invited to participate in Troféu Raça Negraawards ceremony and shared his happiness with his followers.

“I always believed in people. I finished my monologue Louro, Alto, Solteiro, Procura, reaffirming my belief in human beings and their terrible peculiarities; because we are capable of going back and looking at the same path with another vision. I ended up being invited by the Faculdade Zumbi dos Palmares to the Troféu Raça Negra and to debate reflectively the questions raised by Sexo e as negas. The intelligent voices started to express themselves. The negas in power,” wrote the director in the social network.

Even before the debut on TV, the author suffered criticism because of the title chosen and was the target of various protests by blacks that felt offended by the plot of the series, accusing him of making a stereotyped portrayal of the race. On Facebook, followers of Falabella criticized him.

“I’m already tired of this false representation of the black woman, these stereotypes portrayed in this miniseries don’t represent us! Stop with the term mulata, this is pejorative! Stop being a mockery, stop being portrayed as a sexual slave,” wrote one follower. “What is behind a production like this is an eternal imposition of putting and keeping blacks always in the subaltern place,” declared another.

In contrast to so many negative critiques, Miguel received support from other followers, sharing, among others, a text posted by the black actor Deiwis Jamaica, that participated in novelas like Em família and films like Tropa de Elite.

“I decided to say something because the sense of justice screamed inside of me. I cannot remain silent in the face of so many injuries and accusations. Because of being black, I was born and raised in the Cidade Alta of Cordovil community, I feel full ownership of the subject to report all that there is no bad faith, prejudice, racial discrimination or even the intention to stereotype black women,” wrote the actor.

“Let’s support this, that came out of the suburb and that is more than proving that the suburb has not left him. And for these and others always giving opportunities to black actors in such a hard job market. It’s more than time to forget this theme of ‘Historical Debts’. We blacks owe nothing to anyone, we do not have to feel persecuted,” he concluded.

Last Tuesday (16), protesters scrawled the term “racist” on the headquarters of Rede Globo in São Paulo. In a video published by Levante Popular da Juventude, you can see the damage to the front of the station and several people with banners and signs protesting the show.

First of all, a little context. The Zumbi dos Palmares College is one of the arms of the Movimento Negro (black movement). It was born to be a “black university”, inspired by the Americans. Located in São Paulo, currently about 97% of its students are negrxs(black men and women). It is the only one in Latin America with this profile.

The Faculdade Zumbi (Zumbi College) annually hands out the Troféu Raça Negra, rewarding black researchers and militants. This year one of the guests for the awards is the author and actor Miguel Falabella. The justification for his prize is that the institution wants to establish a dialogue with him about racial issues. Much of the Movimento Negro believes that Zumbi College is not adequate space to promote this dialogue.

Below is the letter of repudiation from the Pedagogy department (all pictures in this post were taken from the National Boycott page on Facebook, which already has almost 31,000 likes):

“The students and teachers of Pedagogy of Zumbi dos Palmares College 2014, collectively organized and gathered on the date of September 22, 2014, to formalize a vehement repudiation of the invite made by the directors of Zumbi dos Palmares College to the actor and director Miguel Falabella. As most of our group is formed by black women, we understand that the show Sex e as negas re-enforce racist stereotypes that relegate black women to the role of sexual object and due to this, we do not feel represented in, but to the contrary, disrespected.

Dear World Citizens:

I have read a number of articles from your Internet outreach as well as articles from other sources about the casualties in Liberia and other West African countries about the human devastation caused by the Ebola virus. About a week ago, I read an article published in the Internet news summary publication of the Friends of Liberia that said that there was an agreement that the initiation of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was due to the contact of a two-year old child with bats that had flown in from the Congo. That report made me disconcerted with the reporting about Ebola, and it stimulated a response to the “Friends of Liberia,” saying that African people are not ignorant and gullible, as is being implicated. A response from Dr. Verlon Stone said that the article was not theirs, and that “Friends of Liberia” was simply providing a service. He then asked if he could publish my letter in their Internet forum. I gave my permission, but I have not seen it published. Because of the widespread loss of life, fear, physiological trauma, and despair among Liberians and other West African citizens, it is incumbent that I make a contribution to the resolution of this devastating situation, which may continue to recur, if it is not properly and adequately confronted. I will address the situation in five (5) points:

1. EBOLA IS A GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM (GMO)

Horowitz (1998) was deliberate and unambiguous when he explained the threat of new diseases in his text, Emerging Viruses: AIDS and Ebola – Nature, Accident or Intentional. In his interview with Dr. Robert Strecker in Chapter 7, the discussion, in the early 1970s, made it obvious that the war was between countries that hosted the KGB and the CIA, and the ‘manufacture’ of ‘AIDS-Like Viruses’ was clearly directed at the other. In passing during the Interview, mention was made of Fort Detrick, “the Ebola Building,” and ‘a lot of problems with strange illnesses’ in “Frederick [Maryland].” By Chapter 12 in his text, he had confirmed the existence of an American Military-Medical-Industry that conducts biological weapons tests under the guise of administering vaccinations to control diseases and improve the health of “black Africans overseas.” The book is an excellent text, and all leaders plus anyone who has interest in science, health, people, and intrigue should study it. I am amazed that African leaders are making no acknowledgements or reference to these documents.

2. EBOLA HAS A TERRIBLE HISTORY, AND TESTING HAS BEEN SECRETLY TAKING PLACE IN AFRICA

I am now reading The Hot Zone, a novel, by Richard Preston (copyrighted 1989 and 1994); it is heart-rending. The prolific and prominent writer, Steven King, is quoted as saying that the book is “One of the most horrifying things I have ever read. What a remarkable piece of work.” As a New York Times bestseller, The Hot Zone is presented as “A terrifying true story.” Terrifying, yes, because the pathological description of what was found in animals killed by the Ebola virus is what the virus has been doing to citizens of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia in its most recent outbreak: Ebola virus destroys peoples’ internal organs and the body deteriorates rapidly after death. It softens and the tissues turn into jelly, even if it is refrigerated to keep it cold. Spontaneous liquefaction is what happens to the body of people killed by the Ebola virus! The author noted in Point 1, Dr. Horowitz, chides The Hot Zone for writing to be politically correct; I understand because his book makes every effort to be very factual. The 1976 Ebola incident in Zaire, during President Mobutu Sese Seko, was the introduction of the GMO Ebola to Africa.

3. SITES AROUND AFRICA, AND IN WEST AFRICA, HAVE OVER THE YEARS BEEN SET UP FOR TESTING EMERGING DISEASES, ESPECIALLY EBOLA

The World Health Organization (WHO) and several other UN Agencies have been implicated in selecting and enticing African countries to participate in the testing events, promoting vaccinations, but pursuing various testing regiments. The August 2, 2014 article, West Africa: What are US Biological Warfare Researchers Doing in the Ebola Zone? by Jon Rappoport of Global Research pinpoints the problem that is facing African governments.

Obvious in this and other reports are, among others:

(a) The US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), a well-known centre for bio-war research, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland;

(b) Tulane University, in New Orleans, USA, winner of research grants, including a grant of more than $7 million the National Institute of Health (NIH) to fund research with the Lassa viral hemorrhagic fever;

(c) the US Center for Disease Control (CDC);

(d) Doctors Without Borders (also known by its French name, Medicins Sans Frontiers);

(e) Tekmira, a Canadian pharmaceutical company;

(f) The UK’s GlaxoSmithKline; and

(g) the Kenema Government Hospital in Kenema, Sierra Leone.

Reports narrate stories of the US Department of Defense (DoD) funding Ebola trials on humans, trials which started just weeks before the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The reports continue and state that the DoD gave a contract worth $140 million dollars to Tekmira, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, to conduct Ebola research. This research work involved injecting and infusing healthy humans with the deadly Ebola virus. Hence, the DoD is listed as a collaborator in a “First in Human” Ebola clinical trial (NCT02041715, which started in January 2014 shortly before an Ebola epidemic was declared in West Africa in March. Disturbingly, many reports also conclude that the US government has a viral fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Kenema, a town at the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The only relevant positive and ethical olive-branch seen in all of my reading is that Theguardian.com reported, “The US government funding of Ebola trials on healthy humans comes amid warnings by top scientists in Harvard and Yale that such virus experiments risk triggering a worldwide pandemic.” That threat still persists.

4. THE NEED FOR LEGAL ACTION TO OBTAIN REDRESS FOR DAMAGES INCURRED DUE TO THE PERPETUATION OF INJUSTICE IN THE DEATH, INJURY AND TRAUMA IMPOSED ON LIBERIANS AND OTHER AFRICANS BY THE EBOLA AND OTHER DISEASE AGENTS.

The U. S., Canada, France, and the U. K. are all implicated in the detestable and devilish deeds that these Ebola tests are. There is the need to pursue criminal and civil redress for damages, and African countries and people should secure legal representation to seek damages from these countries, some corporations, and the United Nations. Evidence seems abundant against Tulane University, and suits should start there. Yoichi Shimatsu’s article, The Ebola Breakout Coincided with UN Vaccine Campaigns, as published on August 18, 2014, in the Liberty Beacon.

5. AFRICAN LEADERS AND AFRICAN COUNTRIES NEED TO TAKE THE LEAD IN DEFENDING BABIES, CHILDREN, AFRICAN WOMEN, AFRICAN MEN, AND THE ELDERLY. THESE CITIZENS DO NOT DESERVE TO BE USED AS GUINEA PIGS!

Africa must not relegate the Continent to become the locality for disposal and the deposition of hazardous chemicals, dangerous drugs, and chemical or biological agents of emerging diseases. There is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are strategically designed as biological weapons. It is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are there others? Wherever they exist, it is time to terminate them. If any other sites exist, it is advisable to follow the delayed but essential step: Sierra Leone closed the US bioweapons lab and stopped Tulane University for further testing.

The world must be alarmed. All Africans, Americans, Europeans, Middle Easterners, Asians, and people from every conclave on Earth should be astonished. African people, notably citizens more particularly of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone are victimized and are dying every day. Listen to the people who distrust the hospitals, who cannot shake hands, hug their relatives and friends. Innocent people are dying, and they need our help. The countries are poor and cannot afford the whole lot of personal protection equipment (PPE) that the situation requires. The threat is real, and it is larger than a few African countries. The challenge is global, and we request assistance from everywhere, including China, Japan, Australia, India, Germany, Italy, and even kind-hearted people in the U.S., France, the U.K., Russia, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and anywhere else whose desire is to help. The situation is bleaker than we on the outside can imagine, and we must provide assistance however we can. To ensure a future that has less of this kind of drama, it is important that we now demand that our leaders and governments be honest, transparent, fair, and productively engaged. They must answer to the people. Please stand up to stop Ebola testing and the spread of this dastardly disease.

Plot

Dutchman Paul van Riebeck (Tyrone Power) a Boer cavalry commander travels to Ireland from his native South Africa in 1847 to buy horses for his commandos back home, who need them to fight Zulu tribal warriors. He meets lovely Katie O'Neill (Susan Hayward), daughter of the man selling the horses. She falls in love, but Paul feels he must return home alone.

Squire O'Neill (Henry O'Neill) dies and a potato famine cripples the Irish people financially. Katie decides to marry Shawn Kildare (John Justin) and persuades him to move to South Africa, a place Paul has told her much about. They have a son before arriving in Cape Town, where an 800-mile trek to Hoffen Valley awaits them.

Commando leader Kurt Hout (Richard Egan) guides the wagon train and becomes fixated on Katie after the Zulu kill her husband. Paul and his other men save the settlers, and he ends up in a brutal fight against Kurt with whips.

Kurt stays behind to help Katie build and run a farm because Paul is called away to lead his men. Kurt tries to force himself on her during a storm. A tree falls, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs.

The impoverished Katie is brought a valuable diamond by a native, so she and her son return to Cape Town to buy Paul's ancestral home. FORMER military head of state and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, has warned Nigerians that the next five months would be tough, informing that nobody in the country should vote for treasury looters again in 2015.

He insisted that the APC wanted to control the government at the centre in order change what he termed mis-rule and mismanagement of treasury by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government.

Speaking while receiving prominent members of PDP in Kogi State, who defected to the party, in Lokoja, on Tuesday, Buhari advised party members to ensure they obtained voter cards, saying that was the only weapon to vote out PDP in 2015.

According to him, “this is the people’s money. It must be spent for their welfare, development and good governance. This country can afford all these. The money is not meant to be stolen, but for the development. So you should be up and doing so that we can change the system starting from the councillorship to the presidency,” he said.

“The next five months is going to be tough, because APC is determined to change many things in the country,” he said, insisting that leaders must be accountable to the people, while stealing of public fund must be stopped.

Among the defectors were former acting governor of Kogi State, Clarence Olafemi; immediate past speaker, Abdullahi Bello, six other former members of House of Assembly; former chairman of state PDP, Chief John Odawun and Ambassador Isaac Onu, among others.

National chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, speaking at the rally, implored the people of the state to endure for some time, saying, “as soon as APC takes over the ruling of the state, welfare of workers would be top priority.”

He assured the defectors of equal opportunity in the party.

Other prominent members of the party at the rally were former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Kano State governor, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso; APC deputy national chairman, Senator Lawal Shuaibu; national deputy chairman, South-West, Chief Segun Oni; former governor of Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu; former Minister of State for Petroleum, Shuaib Abdullahi; APC national treasurer, Bala Muhammed and the national organising secretary, Senator Osita Osinazo, among others

Reacting to the defection, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Jacob Edi, said those that defected to APC were the bad eggs in the party, adding that their defection was “good riddance to bad rubbish.”

He said Kogi State “is a PDP state,” adding that politics is a game of numbers and that Governor Idris Wada was in firm control.

Nigeria: Synagogue Building Collapse - Lawyer Threatens to Sue T.B Joshua

A Lagos-based lawyer, Samuel Ilori, has threatened to sue Temitope Joshua (popularly known as T.B Joshua), the founder of The Synagogue Church of All Nations, over the death of dozens of people after a building collapsed in the church's premises.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday, Mr. Ilori said that his group, Vote for Service Initiative, which advocates for good governance and human rights, will take up the case if the Lagos State government continues its foot-dragging.

"I started the campaign from last week that T.B Joshua must be brought to book, that justice must be done over the case," said Mr. Ilori, a Corporate and Property Consultant.

"Because this is not the first time we will have a collapsed building, and this is not the first time that the Lagos State government has confiscated such land and made sure that the developer or the owner of the land face the law.

"What we are asking for is that government should do the needful. I believe they have concluded their investigation, as far as evacuation is concerned evacuation has been done. Everything that needed to be done, I believe has been done," Mr. Ilori added.

A five-storey building inside the church's premises in Ikotun, Lagos, collapsed on September 12 as three additional floors were being added to the original two-storey structure.

Eighty-six dead bodies were recovered from the rubble and 131 rescued, according to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.

On Monday, Jeff Radebe, a South African minister, said that 115 people, including 84 South Africans, died in the incident.

Both the Lagos State government and the Nigerian Institute of Building have stated that the church did not get approval before embarking on construction on the collapsed building.

The Lagos State government says it is still investigating the cause of the incident.

But Mr. Ilori accused the government of giving Mr. Joshua a preferential treatment.

"Section 74(1) of the Physical Planning and Development Law of Lagos State states inter alia that at any time there is a collapsed building within the state. Wherever it is discovered that there is a negligence on the part of the owner or the developer, that land will be confiscated and whoever is at the other side of the law will be prosecuted," Mr. Ilori said.

"That's exactly what we are asking for. That the Lagos State government headed by Governor Fashola should do the needful. That by now the land of Synagogue supposed to have been confiscated, especially that land where the building collapsed.

"But up till now they are still dilly dallying, up till now they are still trying to do it in a palliative way to see that they give the man a soft landing. All those shenanigan visits, I am not interested.

"How long are they going to investigate? What are they investigating? The question is, what are they investigating? They are investigating the cacophony of lies that the man put up, the first time he said it was Boko Haram, the second time he said it was one plane hovering about...

"They (the church) said they have an approval, the government said 'bring the approval,' they said the approval has collapsed with the building. That is nonsense. They are just giving the man enough time to buy time so that they can die this matter and that is the reason why we are not going to allow him."

'Criminal negligence'

Mr. Ilori said that he would take the campaign to prosecute Mr. Joshua to the social media to create a lot of awareness. "By Thursday, by his grace, my group is going to write to the Lagos State government intimating him of those things that he had done concerning criminal negligence," Mr. Ilori said.

"In 2008, Reverend King was convicted for putting fire on one of his devotees, the lady died. Reverend King right now is waiting for the guillotine. The same thing happened to Arowolo, the man they claimed killed his wife, the Lagos State government prosecuted the man and he was sentenced to death by hanging. The man is still waiting for the hangman's noose.

"Why is it that it comes to T.B Joshua and the government does not know what to do about it?

"We called it criminal negligence because if you have a foundation for a building that's supposed to collect two-storey building and you take it from two-storey building to six-storey building, that is suicidal. That means you know exactly that the foundation cannot contain that building that you are building on it and you take it for granted that whatever happens, let it happen. And that's exactly what has happened here.

"We call it criminal negligence. That is why he's supposed to be charged for culpable homicide, because he knew very well that that foundation that contain two storey building cannot take six storey building, yet he allowed it to go on."

At the back of the main building of The Synagogue Church, an ongoing construction is putting additional three floors to the five-storey building. The state government said it had already stopped the construction until the church presents the approval documents.

"They (the government) said they gave them three months. These are all systems of buying time, and that is the time that we don't have. That is time we are not going to give to Lagos State government," Mr. Ilori said.

"Every other collapsed building in Lagos State have been taken over immediately evacuation has been done. So all these time that they are trying to buy for the man, we are not going to wait.

"Because it's either the Lagos State government do the needful or a court of law will have to give them an order of mandamus, to tell us if Section 74 of that Physical Planning and Development law of Lagos State as amended in 2012 is no longer relevant. Because it is the Lagos State government that signed it into law.

"Lives have been lost. So the law of the land will apply," Mr. Ilori added.

An Alaska TV reporter dropped a bomb on her bosses Sunday night when she admitted to secretly running a medical marijuana biz and announced she was resigning to run it full time, saying "as for this job ... f--- it, I quit."

KTVA Anchorage reporter Charlo Greene did a story on the Alaska Cannabis Club on Sunday night's broadcast, but didn't reveal her connection to it until the end, during a live in-studio shot.

"Now everything you've heard is why I, the actual owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club, will be dedicating all of my energy toward fighting for freedom and fairness, which begins with legalizing marijuana here in Alaska," Greene said.

"And as for this job, well, not that I have a choice but, f--- it, I quit."

Greene then strolled off camera.

The broadcast quickly cut to weekend anchor Alexis Fernandez, who looked stunned and fumbled for an apology before saying, "We'll be right back."

In a statement, KTVA brass apologized to its viewers for Greene's language.

"The employee has been terminated," news chief Bert Rudman said.

Greene later told Alaska Dispatch News her bosses didn't know she was the president of the ganja dispensary and had no clue about her plans to step down.

"I wanted to draw attention to this issue. And the issue is medical marijuana," Greene told the news service.

French vegetable farmers protesting against falling living standards have set fire to tax and insurance offices in town of Morlaix, in Brittany.

The farmers used tractors and trailers to dump artichokes, cauliflowers and manure in the streets and also smashed windows, police said.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls condemned protesters for preventing firefighters from dealing with the blaze.

The farmers say they cannot cope with falling prices for their products.

A Russian embargo on some Western goods - imposed over the Ukraine crisis - has blocked off one of their main export markets.

About 100 farmers first launched an overnight attack on an insurance office outside Morlaix, which they set light to and completely destroyed, officials said.

They then drove their tractors to the main tax office in the town where they dumped unsold artichokes and cauliflowers, smashed windows and then set the building on fire.

French media said the farmers then blocked a busy main road in Morlaix in both directions.

In a statement, Mr Valls "vigorously" condemned the "looting and destruction by fire" of the buildings.

Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Boko Haram gunmen stormed a crowded market in Nigeria's restive northeastern state of Borno, killing several people and carting away food, witnesses said Saturday

Dressed in military and police uniforms, dozens of insurgents attacked the town of Mainok, 56 kilometres outside Maiduguri, the state capital late Thursday, firing a rocket-propelled grenade and spraying the market with bullets.

The attackers also looted food which they loaded onto trucks abandoned by fleeing traders, witnesses said.

"They struck around 1:30pm (1230GMT) during peak hours by first firing a rocket-propelled grenade at the market before opening fire on traders", Salman Lawan, a trader who witnessed the carnage told AFP.

"They killed several people in the attack but it is difficult to give a precise figure," said Lawan who fled to Maiduguri following the attack.

Another trader Modu Kachalla, who gave a similar account, said the insurgents were looking for cash and food.


"They robbed traders of cash and loaded food into trucks they seized at the market before fleeing into the bush," he said.

"The market was full...when the Boko Haram gunmen attacked which explained the high casualties," he said.

"The attackers killed many people at the market but it is difficult to give a toll because everybody fled to save their lives," said Ibrahim Kolo, another witness.

Boko Haram, which has seized swathes of territory in Borno and in neighbouring Yobe and Adamawa states, has been running short of food in the areas they have taken, according to residents.

On Wednesday the insurgents ambushed a truck carrying grain to Maiduguri outside the nearby village of Ngamdu and looted it before setting it on fire, they said.

The news of the attack on the market was slow to emerge due to disruption in phone services in the region on Friday. Telecoms services were only restored on Saturday.

Mainok has suffered repeated attacks by Boko Haram, which wants to impose a hardline Islamic state in the mainly Muslim north.

In February scores were killed there and many homes destroyed by the extremists.

Their insurgency has claimed more than 10,000 lives since 2009 and left more than 700,000 homeless.

The Nigerian military has come under increasing pressure as the Islamists have captured more territory in the volatile northeast in recent weeks.

thanks for the link and update, looks like the honourable General Manager and State Commissioner have some work cut out for their staff come Monday morning producing all legal documents on file. I think some Oga at the top heads are gonna roll on this situation due to the international scope of the tragedy.


"The commissioner said though there was an approval for the church auditorium, he was not certain that there was an approval for the additional work being done on the auditorium."
