raumdeuter: Check Burnleys first goal vs Southampton today
Contact from KwP came after the ball has been released I don't even understand timbros' argument. Contact after the ball has been released makes the foul even more egregious. It is the very definition of a late tackle. |

swiz123: While I believe Silva was rightly sent off for a late challenge, why didn't VAR review the late challenge on Werner. Doesn't it qualify as an OBVIOUS error on the ref's part? VAR messed up for that one. I felt it was a penalty. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by afrodoc(m): 1:40pm On Apr 04, 2021 |
BlueMann: Well whether it was an error or not, VAR wouldn't have reviewed it. I stand to be corrected, but VAR doesn't intervene in cases of second yellow cards, except if it feels it should be upgraded to a straight red. Frankly, I think that is rubbish.
But what do you make of an earlier situation involving Werner? The defender stamped on Werner after he had played a square pass. Same as Silva's case - late challenge which came after the ball had been played. Surely that should have been a penalty.
The first pic is the foul on Werner.
The second is a scenario which saw Kovacic get a second yellow and a subsequent sending off in last season's FA Cup final, despite being stamped on by Xhaka. It was an error, but VAR isn't allowed to review such cases. The Werner tackle was a penalty IMO. Remember that VAR is a person not a machine. The whole premise of VAR is the belief that 2 officials can't make the same mistake. VAR should have been employed in this case but obviously VAR himself did not see the foul. You are right about VAR not being applicable in the Silva decision as it wasn't a direct red card, and i agree with you that it is quite ridiculous. However even if VAR was used it would still have ended with Silva taking the walk of shame. |

timbros: The only contact made was Silva's left leg which was trailing. He had no control over that because his stretch left him sliding...
From the referee's angle, he wouldn't have seen it. I expected VAR to call for a review. If you watch the replays from the camera in the corner kick/throw in angle, you will see that Silva's right leg never made contact. It was his trailing left leg... And it never determined the outcome of the shot. It was a yellow card offence. He crashed into the guy after the ball had left his feet. It was a late and dangerous tackle which while not really reckless was at least unsporting and deserving of a yellow card. The fact that the ball was no where near the player when he hit him actually makes the tackle worse. VAR calls for reviews only for OBVIOUS errors made by the referee. That was not an obvious error, and in fact was no error at all. |

Leyqute: We still have a few artistic coaches but they’re becoming scientific. Marco Bielsa has tweaked tactics. Even Pep sef has changed his game plan. He doesn’t hug possession again as before. Without players like Xavi, Phillip Lahm, David Silva and co Pep can't fully execute his extreme ball hugging possession style. That was probably the reason he wanted Jorginho, to come and recycle opponents to death. |

Leyqute: Teams lose players all the time. They just have to make do with what they have. PSG didn’t play Barcelona with Neymar and it’s not as if Bayern doesn’t have enough firepower to win the tie. Yes but that does not mean if they lose their best player the equation will remain the same. Many of the Bayern players who were on superhuman levels last season have not reached those heights this season and they appear a little more reliant on him this season. If you guys look at it from the point of view of PSG it would be disappointing if Neymar and Mbappe fail to beat a Bayern team that is missing it’s only top quality CF. |

Leyqute: Dayo is just aiming for a soft landing should Bayern lose. Lewy is quite important but he hasn’t been doing it alone. Bayern has other important players who have been bailing them out. Gnabry, Coman, Sane, Muller. There’s enough firepower to beat PSG. PSG also has firepower. With Lewandowski out the 2 best players in the tie will be Neymar and Mbappe PLUS a good supporting cast. Bayern are without arguably the best striker in the world and there is no replacement for him of a similar quality. It would be a choke job if PSG do not go through. |

A40: I agree that styles make fights but I believe there is something to be said about Jones taking this long to make this leap. In a sports like MMA power is a very real equalizer especially in the heavyweights. Jon simply has no room for error
Are you sure Jones will want to shoot multiple takedowns on a guy like Francis? This is a guy that couldn't take Dom Reyes down and keep him there. I struggle to believe that he does that with Ngannou who is improving his wrestling game.
You do understand too that the reach and size advantage Jon has enjoyed against majority of his opponents also flies out the window
To be perfectly honest Ngannou's never been a horrible wrestler. The only way you get Ngannou down is if he lunges wildly and misses or he's gassed. If you shoot at Ngannou just once while he is still fresh you're going to get starched. Just ask Cain Velasquez. Never mind multiple times
I don't believe Jones has the power to hurt Ngannou standing. He is going to have to be on his bike circling around the ring (he needs to pray it's a bigger ring)
I don't know if it's a loss of interest or decline though we can't rule out a decline just because Jones has been in the game so long but I believe size matters and getting hit by LHW (most of them blown up MWs) is significantly different from getting hit by a heavyweight never mind a freak like Ngannou. Jones could fight the perfect fight and just one mistake can end it for him. Jones never had to worry about that at LHW because he never had to face such size and power. I actually agree with all your views. My own point is that stylistically Jones will be a different test to Ngannou's previous fighters. I definitely know that Jones won't have the huge length and reach advantage he has at LHW and appreciate that he has traditionally struggled against guys his size. |

timbros: Gbam! You follow Enyimba wella then.
We won CAF Champions League with Orjinta and Nwaneri at the heart of defence. That combo was impregnable that 03/04 season. Watching Enyimba play then was like watching a proper European team play.
I remember the FA Cup final vs BBC Lions in Liberation stadium, PH. That should be around 2005 or so... This guy Timothy Adjembe worry our defence die that day. We won in penalty shoot out. Shortly after that match, OUK sanctioned his signing sharperly ... I think he was the first million naira plus signing in NPFL. Plug and play. If one player goes down the replacement comes in and does an equally good or better job. Ezeji, Frimpong, Ndidi (my favourite), Tyakase, Muri Ogunbiyi, Nwana a.k.a Ayaya, Ekene Ezenwa, One-eyed Okemiri and Ajibade Omolade fighting it out for left back. And of course Onyekachi Okonkwo. That team was the equivalent of doping. The only Nigerian team that i ever saw successfully play possession quick passing football on water logged pitch. The opponents dey confused that day. |
