DDG escaped greater criticism because of his reputation IMO. If he was playing for a decisive manager like Pep he would have been replaced 2 years ago. The reason we kept faith with him is similar to the reason we still have Dr Jones on our books.

And what DDG did between 2012 and 2018 has no bearing whatsoever with who should be our keeper in 2021. In football you keep your job based on what you can do now and what you potentially can do in the future NOT what you did in the past.

This is not Nigerian Merit Awards where they will award you GCON because of your long history of service to the nation in the past.

2 wrongs do not make a right. Even if it is true that the press would have erroneously blamed DDG for that goal that does not mean we should now gang up against our own keeper (Henderson).

Even a hybrid of Kahn and Buffon will concede from crosses from time to time. Replacing DDG does not reduce our risk of conceding from crosses to zero.

I am not so sure about that. DDG is not criticized EVERY time we concede a headed goal. In this particular situation Henderson actually did well to pull off a DDG-like save only for AWB and Lindelof to sleep on duty twice and allow the rebound.

And i don't really get your point. Do you mean that because you believe that the press would have wrongfully criticized DDG for the goal we should now wrongfully criticize Henderson for the goal? Abi is that not what you are demanding?

I am dead certain if it was De Gea in goal for that Brighton opener, we'd be treated to complains that he doesn't command his box well. Henderson is young, his time will come even as he has 0payed a fair share of games this season...

It is not all about the English press. It is a fact that DDG does not command his box, does not communicate well with his defenders, and is not confident coming out for aerial balls. These are facts and not just journalists' opinions.

My point is, that foul shouldn't be a card. Silva clearly went for the ball which he missed and didn't make contact with that tackle. The only contact was his trailing left leg. It was clearly unintentional. Why branding a yellow card?

Good thing you admitted the inconsistency of VAR.

All i can say is that intent is not required for a yellow card to be brandished. The IFAB laws of the game are quite clear on this. The way Silva made the tackle was dangerous, and some might say reckless.
There will not be an uproar outside Chelsea circles about the decision. If the roles were reversed you would have been wondering why the referee didn't card the offender.

The more important issue is why should an experienced defender like Silva be making such rash decisions when he is already on a yellow card. Silva is a Jekyll and Hyde kind of a defender. Appears classy most times and then has these occasional brain farts that crop up at inopportune times. Reminds me a little of Joseph Yobo for the Super Eagles.

I am hearing that Anthony Martial is out for the rest of the season.

VAR messed up for that one. I felt it was a penalty.

Well whether it was an error or not, VAR wouldn't have reviewed it. I stand to be corrected, but VAR doesn't intervene in cases of second yellow cards, except if it feels it should be upgraded to a straight red. Frankly, I think that is rubbish.

But what do you make of an earlier situation involving Werner? The defender stamped on Werner after he had played a square pass. Same as Silva's case - late challenge which came after the ball had been played. Surely that should have been a penalty.

The first pic is the foul on Werner.

The second is a scenario which saw Kovacic get a second yellow and a subsequent sending off in last season's FA Cup final, despite being stamped on by Xhaka.
It was an error, but VAR isn't allowed to review such cases.

The Werner tackle was a penalty IMO. Remember that VAR is a person not a machine. The whole premise of VAR is the belief that 2 officials can't make the same mistake. VAR should have been employed in this case but obviously VAR himself did not see the foul.

You are right about VAR not being applicable in the Silva decision as it wasn't a direct red card, and i agree with you that it is quite ridiculous. However even if VAR was used it would still have ended with Silva taking the walk of shame.

From the referee's angle, he wouldn't have seen it. I expected VAR to call for a review. If you watch the replays from the camera in the corner kick/throw in angle, you will see that Silva's right leg never made contact. It was his trailing left leg... And it never determined the outcome of the shot.

It was a yellow card offence. He crashed into the guy after the ball had left his feet. It was a late and dangerous tackle which while not really reckless was at least unsporting and deserving of a yellow card. The fact that the ball was no where near the player when he hit him actually makes the tackle worse.

VAR calls for reviews only for OBVIOUS errors made by the referee. That was not an obvious error, and in fact was no error at all.
