Politics › Re: EFCC Keeps 10% Of Billions Recovered From Debtors by agitator: 7:38am On Nov 09, 2009
Jakumo:
Sir, I do apologise for my parent's inability to fund my education beyond the kindergarten level, and I would certainly be most grateful for any donations you might be kind enough to allocate towards my enlightenment, so that I will at least know which way up to hold the EFCC  documentation when I do finally muster the courage to attempt reading it.

While I await this kind gesture, may I remind you that Nigeria's EFCC anti-corruption agency is empowered to investigate and prosecute ALL crimes which generate financial returns for outlaws, ranging from the embezzlement of state funds by venal officials, to drug running, extortion and advanced fee 419 fraud, Nigeria's trademark felony.

Bank fraud is only a subset of the entire gambit of illegality that thrives in Nigeria, consuming the place alive, and so preserving the country's well-earned reputation as a squalid haven of industrial scale criminality.  The EFCC happens to be the agency empowered by the Nigerian government to investigate AND PROSECUTE treasury looters AS WELL AS bank looters, among sundry other sleaze-bags, and that legal process requires generous funding to effectively pursue.   Such requisite financial muscle is best extracted from the deep pockets of the felons being nailed, therefore whatever percentage of stolen money that is appropriated for that endeavor by the cops will by definition leave FAR more change in public coffers than the ZERO dollars that would have been left if the criminals evaded all prosecution initiatives and were left free to hide the swag as they see fit.

There is, without doubt, a direct correlation and functional equivalence between the US Drug Enforcement Agency and Nigeria's EFCC corruption pit bull, no matter how depressing that comparison may seem to you. May I suggest you sit down for a stiff drink or two, if you happen to suspect that the EFCC is about to drop the hammer on you, for that, regrettably, is about the only measure that will make the slightest difference when the men in red coats come knocking.
Drug money belongs to the criminal prosecuted while bank money belongs to individual depositors and shareholders

You hit the nail on the head, govt doesn't keep records or statistics. They hate records and that is one of Nigeria's major problems, there have been several instances were law courts have not even been able to prove an individuals identity and let them off the hook to commit more serious crimes.
Records are kept only thing is that it can be manipulated, disappear, burnt, etc.

Once intercepted, the proceeds of crime are best deployed to fight crime, conveniently lightening the burden on state resources.  This pragmatic philosophy is exemplified by the way the US Drug Enforcement Agency retains a HUGE chunk of the raw cash and asset forfeiture income accrued from narcotics busts, to further the cause of apprehending and neutralizing narco-cowboys, whose insidious products and violent conduct so poison societies.

Providing that the innocent are never framed, Nigeria's FCC Fraud Squad deserves to keep a full 50% of the embezzled loot they trace and seize, so that more advanced surveillance technology, vehicles and weapons can be procured to tip the scales in the favor of the victimized majority, by facilitating the investigation, pursuit and brutal sanction of all those who plunder national wealth in ways that indirectly inflict so many more casualties than could ever be claimed by a mere substance abuse epidemic.
What is the correlation between this Crime income  and recovering shareholders/depositors money huh undecided

interesting view points from some and unfortunate comments from others, but at the end of the day i'm glad this post got some people thinking.
hopefully everybody will learn one or two from the mature posts here. especially the post from a guy who said he was very proud of his wife, she had nothing when she met him and now she is very rich but she is still the same person.

for some people who say women think like this because they are single and cannot get a man, FYI i am in a very happy relationship wiith a man who has nothing but love and respect for me. i just like 2 share opinions.

this life is a journey that we will all enjoy when you find that person that can encourage you to be better in life. don't try and kill anyone's dream because of jealousy, regardless of the sex of a person, anybody can be God's vessel to bless a family.

Most times I don't feel like even responding. May be some peeps don't know that Nigeria has highest number of managers (manage car designed for maximum five passengers to accomodate 8-10 passengers depending on area, generators for every house - more for face me i face you because each room has one, if kerosine is not available use of saw dust for cooking - some ingenious nigerians even invented a special stove, arranging for personal boreholes, etc the list is endless. Survival by all means possible.

What is the problem of the poster? People moaning and complaining, using their personal money, at least, $2000 dollars to seek for better life elsewhere - don't know how this is a problem of the government? is there any subsidy given by the government to those travelling out to seek greener pastures eventhough it may not be greener than imagined.

The peep who said his uncle started a business in Nigeria, why is his uncle's family still outside nigeria? Can't he provide accommodation for them here since he has made his community better, or is the better not good enough for his family?

Even the politicians, all their children are being educated abroad, their wives give birth abroad. Is medical check-up rocket science that is not available or cannot be provided in Nigeria?

People see a way of survival and have taken their destiny in their own hands yet you come here to berate them.

The students now rely so much on expo and help during exam, and when that expo or help is not forth coming, what do u get? Massive failure.

i believe the signs must have been obvious, while you were still dating.  most women make the mistake of thinking when they marry a man they can change him. It's not easy to change a man's ideology.  As a man i don't discuss issues with my family members except when i really need a third party advice, but not after discussing/concluding with my woman.  It's too degrading to the woman.  Also the sister will not have respect for the wife's decision in the house

Even the multi-national companies who have enormous resources at their disposal can't survive they are now moving out of nigeria.

I remember one transporter tried to repair some really bad spots along the East/West Road and he was arrested by the Mins of Works.  How do you want the people to perform magic. The government collects taxes/revenues, royalties, etc and after that you want people to contribute their money in providing the basic amenities, individuals who can't afford 3 meals. Nobody is requesting to be spoon fed by the government or given garri, yams, beans etc. just provide the enabling environment.

In some parts of this country as soon as they see you mobilising to start a business the revenue people will start visiting you. barbers shops, hair dressing salons, rental, even mama-put, pay development levies, sanitation fees, in fact anything the authories can cook up to make money. Yet when it comes to provide basic amenities that would have helped the business to grow, which would have benefited the government more by way of increased revenue, they are not ready.  In fact those in power while enjoying complain of the difficulties more than the masses.

Guys we should continue criticising them.  It's now getting to them that's why they have employed sycophants to be on nairaland for their defence.

To begin, what exactly is the "New Economy"?
Who asked for definitions?

ehie:
To begin, what exactly is the "New Economy"? A formal definition of this economic concept has never been provided, thus we are left to presume what its actual meaning may be. By "New Economy," we understand this to mean a national financial and economic infrastructure characterized chiefly by the predominance of services and technology (i.e., intangible assets), and the abolition of the former infrastructure of physical manufacturing and industrialism (i.e., tangible assets). Hence, the "virtual" economy of computers and electronic commerce replaces the "old" labor-intensive economy involving manufacturing and the movement of physical commodities. Think of it as the ascendancy of the virtual over the real.
This leads us to our next observation of the New Economy—it is global in nature. It is predicated upon the economic interdependence among nations, even those nations that are politically, religiously and ideologically antithetical to one another. In many ways, the New Economy represents a revival of the Tower of Babel, only instead of bricks and mortar, it is bound by a reticular web of technology and transportation. The subsistence and success of this brave new Tower of Babel (which P.Q. Wall styles the "Church of American Technology"wink depends on international cooperation, with the U.S. serving in the role of chief financial facilitator and political mediator among nations. It was created largely by the U.S. and is being held together almost entirely by the U.S.
stop spewing jargon here.  so the U.S. is not manufacturing any physical commodities according to your post.  Live in your deluded world, may be you don't know that people labour for you to get electricity, water, food housing. May be even you car is a virtual commodity.

Breaking News

Writhing Snakes Duct Taped To Smuggler

A smuggler has been arrested in Norway with 14 royal pythons and 10 albino leopard geckos duct taped to his body.

The 22-year-old was trying to sneak the creatures into the northern European country, along with a tarantula in his bag, customs officer Helge Breilid said.

The Norwegian citizen was stopped for a routine customs check in the southern town of Kristiansand after getting off a ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark.

Officers found the spider before deciding to give the young man a full body search.

Mr Breilid said the non-venomous creatures were hidden in stockings - one for each snake - taped to the man's abdomen.

The geckos were in boxes strapped onto his legs.

"Customs officers quickly realised the man was smuggling animals because his whole body was in constant motion," Mr Breilid was quoted by newspaper VG as saying.

Kristiansand police lawyer Johann Martin Kile told VG the man would be released after he agreed to pay a 12,500 Norwegian crown (£1,380) fine.

The reptiles have been handed over to a security firm until Norwegian authorities decide what to do with them.

The Copenhagen Post's website said the smuggler told officers he bought all the animals in Denmark.

But he did not explain if they were for him or to sell to other people, the Post continued.

"He told us he was crazy about reptiles," Mr Breilid added.

Royal pythons are the smallest species in the python family.

When the world is up with their gloves tapping alternative renewable energy sources, Nigeria does not seem to stay behind in the race - its tropical climate makes solar energy the most viable alternative energy source.

Bishop Kodji is the first village that got electrified under the Lagos State government’s pilot solar energy project. It is a small island in the Atlantic Ocean off Nigeria, living on fishing and canoe carvings.

A lot of Us like parroting western propaganda and fad, forgetting our own practical problems.  Environmental pollution and green house gases are western fads - they do not apply to us. It is the western countries that contribute over 90% of the world's environmental pollution and you are expecting us to pay more for ameliorating it. The us that produce over 40% of world green house gases are not interested in spending money to reduce it, and someone one we - impoverished africans to buy and maintain expensive solar cars.

most people here have lost touch with reality on the ground. what the masses need, especially lagosians, is Electricity for their homes and work places, cheap and affordable houses, cheap and affordable food, good road network and efficient mass transport system, etc.  Leave space travel, nuclear weapon and power and green house gasses to the people who can afford it and have developed the technology.

I think the bone of contention here is not about electric vehicle being economical or whether we have a ready means of maintaining them but rather that electric vehicle provides a sure and better alternative in eliminating the problems of pollution that running of our combustion engines on fuels have always produced. it is a question of saving our environment, our world and our planet  no matter how much monetary cost it takes us to do so. In verse13, KJV says that people accused the apostles of being drunken with wine. The accusers were those who had no faith and therefore heard the babble instead of their mother tounge. Summary, the apostles spoke babble, the people heard language. Its a thing of the spirit.
