Congrats on your visa issuance. If there was a definite decision on seat availability in August, then it would be best to inform IRCC now. But since there is a small chance you could still get a seat this fall then no worries on that. I will suggest you wait until it is absolutely clear in about two months from now, before you inform IRCC. If I understand correctly, the same school already issued you a new LOA automatically for Winter 2022, then you are even luckier than most people who lose class seats. In several such cases, students have had to re-apply for admission in same school or elsewhere and woud often be unsure of an admission in same or similar course. Ysakaws1: |

If you have good grades (at least 2.1 or more) in your degress (particularly, the most recent qualification) and you can put together a great SOP/research proposal, including some evidence of research publication (co-author of articles and/or book chapters), just go for a PHD. You have a good chance of sucess in Canada, with such a profile. YakubuLagos: 1 Like |

Hello, The rule of thumb for your type of situation is patience and strategy. Patience, taking the best action that will favour the whole family in the long run. There is no rush in this Canada journey. Strategy, by planning months and possibly a year or more ahead. Personally, what I did is to apply for study visa alone and use family (wife and 3 kids) as strong home ties in addition to other normal ties. Then when I arrived Canada and completed one semester, I submitted application for family 11-days ago. My wife SOWP, my older kids (12yrs and 7yrs) study visa and my youngest child (less than 2 years) a visitor visa. I did upfront medical and submitted application on 15th May 2021. The medicals were updated to passed on 19th May 2021 for all - my youngest child didn't require medical exams due to age and visa type. My spouse completed biometric yesterday and the waiting game continues. I hope to also continue learning on here from people who have had similar experiences. There are no guarantees but with a good strategy you have a better chance. There are students (even in Nigeria) who applied with their family and got approved but the chances are low. You can ask on the study permit thread for direct experiences. teeboi77: 3 Likes |

Hi, Good to be back. I think this is my first time of posting on the SOWP thread. I was on student visa thread up till early in the year before school stuff got hectic. Got study visa approved in Nov 2020 and arrived Montreal in Dec 2020 for the winter term. I am a PhD student and I just wrapped up first semester. I now have time to put together family applications - SOWP for wifey, study visa for 2 kids (7 and 12) and visit visa for 1 toddler (19-months old). I already received CAQ for the 2 kids applying for study visa. So if anyone has questions about that Quebec-specific experience, I can share my personal insights on here. Please post any such question here and tag me. I will be online throughout the summer as schedule lightens up a bit. Q1: I have a couple of quick questions as I move forward. The list of required documents generated on the online application shows two of my kids need to upload "letter of acceptance" while both the province and CIC websites states that they are excempted from showing same document. During application for their CAQ, I used my own LOA and CAQ for that purpose. If I wanted to, I can't even get the closest thing to a LOA for them until they arrive here according to the school board website. For those who have scaled this stage on the visa application, what do I upload here? Q2: While filling the main application, there is a question in the imm1295e pdf form - (see attached) - Question 3 about address is required but confusing. Any ideas what to put here? Remember this is Spousal Open Work Permit Application, so there is no employer yet. Thanks. 1 Like

Hi Oga Frank, Thanks for your prompt response as usual. I was actually asking in respect of the kid's open study permit in Quebec. Because their system is slightly different, I would appreciate someone with similar and specific experience to learn from. You can't get it wrong when you listen to people who have done before, what you are now about to do. So please I am still awaiting feedback on the question. Cheers. Frankrobbn1: |

Hi all, Please is there any Quebec based student already in Canada planning to apply (or already applied/got approved) for SOWP for spouse and/or study visas for kids? I want to know if CAQ is required for minors (7 years old and 12 years old) and if yes, how to go about it. Please help if you have or know anyone who has direct experience or can recommend someone to contact. Thanks for your response in advance. |

I know that - my comment was "first time seeing a VO statement specifically saying someone didn't have international travel history as one of the reasons for refusals. ". I was refering to the comments in the GCMS notes. Even though it is a common reason for refusal, you rarely see it stated this clearly in a GCMS note. TheShaman: 1 Like |

Hi, I understand the feeling. It is not strange to most people here. Its a form of baptism so no problem. Here is what I would advise. Unless you can get a scanner/imaging technology that will optimize the output of all intended attachments for quality and file size then you need to strike a balance. This will be between adding many documents and ensuring contents for those attached are clear and legible on the one hand, and keeping the eventual file size below 4MB. So take another look at your documents. If you have a business and company registration for instance with 12 pages, you probably don't need more than 2 or 3 of those pages. Keep the CAC certificate, profile of directors/owners and description of business activities. You will weed out 8 to 9 pages here. A land document for instance only need the survey and or main C/O pages. I added just a survey for land document. Also, you should explore how to have two or more small sized related documents on a single page. All my kids birth certificates were on a page. You can have passport data page and birth certificates and/or old visas on the same page. The final decision is yours. NB: Don't forget to gather as much material as possible but then decide on which ones are the most imporatnt to use becasue of the quality and file size limitations. Actually both correspond positively; as image quality impproves, file size does too and vice versa. Ire oh! It shall end in praises. mrkingz: 2 Likes |

Wow! This is the first time seeing a VO statement specifically saying someone didn't have international travel history as one of the reasons for refusals. Applications are indeed differently treated. Several people applied with VIRGIN passports and such was never a concern. Its really crazy how unpredictable the VOs can be. I think the main issue here was your finance. Improve that and make sure the re-application is as tight as before, you should be god with God on your side. Ire oh! It shall end in praises. RichieJayy: 1 Like |

Hi, I had to show a proof of where I would be self isolating; a short lease or private airbnb accomodation should be adequate. The POE officer will almost certainly as about where you would be staying especially now that they require a -ve PCR test result in addition. If you are going to be staying with friends or family, you need to be careful saying so because the POE officers will want to know if there are vulnerable group (kids and the elderly) in the place. @milkytins , Congratulations in advance. There is nothing wrong with the child application but if it is a visitor visa (for the child), that may explain the delay. Study and work permit are being prioritized above visitors at this time due to the pandemic. I am sure latest after your approvals (which are very imminent), you will get update on your child's application. However, my advice is that you do upfront medical for the child atthe same time you are doing yours to avoid returning for it in a few days/weeks. Ire oh! It shall end in praises. milkytins: |

Hi @tojeruky Sorry to hear about the experience and delay. I am a learner on this platform so I urge you to redirect your questions to more qualified legends in the house. However, I will offer my own little opinion on your questions and pose one or two questions to you as well to enable other respondents better help you. "1. Can I secure a Masters in Canada with that CGPA? If yes, kindly share any step by step guide or tips for success." If your reported CGPA of 3.6 is for a BSc and out of a total of 4, which I assume would be a first class, then Yes. But that is highly unlikely for the educonsultant to say, so I suspect your meant 3.6/5.0. In that case, your CGPA would be a 2.1 which is also very qualified for a Master degree application. In fact, we have seen somone report on here that they got Masters admission in Canada with 2.2 grade/CGPA. You need to provide more details about your actual grades and discipline - both for Bsc and the planned Msc for people to better analyse and respond. "2. Can I appeal or contest my student visa refusal? If yes, please share any ideas or ways to go about it." Yes but it is a very costly, risky and time consuming route especially for a single refusal without cogent argument to challenge the situation. You may just be wasting time and money. The usual advice on this platform is that you should request your GCMS notes, understand the specific concerns of the VO and repackage your application to address those reasons, before reapplication. Ire oh! It shall end in praises. |

Hi @TheShaman, Thanks again for your response. I want to be crystal clear, my intention for trying to get clarification on this topic is first to learn. I am also interested in helping others avoid wasting time and money, by learning from other people's experiences. Although you didn't pinpoint the exact aspect(s) of my post that may be wrong as requested so I can learn from your opinion I am putting together my thoughts on this topic here, in counter response. In case my original posts were confusing, let me summarize the following key scenarios on this topic; For Online Application, you don't have to pay package transmission fee to send passport upon approval if the biometric was taken at the same vfs centre on that particular application. Just submit your proof of biometric - the long yellow slip - when you send your passport and other requirements. Let's assume this was an all Lagos vfs affair. Following from the example above, if you decided to send your passport to Abuja vfs for stamping upon approval, you MUST pay the N7,430 package transmission fee because of the difference in locations. Let us now assume you mixed this up with a paper application, that would apply to applicants whose previous online applications were unsuccessful then decided to switch to using a paper application route at some point. They will pay the package transmission fee at the point of submitting application. This fact is clearly stated on the vfs website and I quote below; "If you do not need to provide biometrics and you are submitting your passport and/or documents at the Visa Application Centre, the package transmission fee will apply." Most posts of people on this platform usually carry a caveat that it is their own opinion so we don't take it as the gospel truth then later find out it may be flawed. I try to follow in the footsteps of those legends by inserting the source and limitations of my opinion in my earlier post thus; "That is what I believe from the past experiences of people here and those I know personally." To the few specifics of your case I do not think your case and experience is what every other person would normally go through. You did biometric AFTER refusal of your first application. Most (99%) applicants would have done their biometric before getting a decision, at the least. Or would be too distraught to even remember they had already paid for biometric. So you can't use your case to measure how the process works if it is not the common way most people do it. It is just like using the case of someone who got PPR before Medical Request. We can't judge every other case with such an outlier which is exactly what happened in your experience. I want to believe that person would still have to complete the medical exams whether it is requested or not before they get their TRV/SP. Also, we are not sure how your biometric (completed after refusal) was categorised. There will be need to consider a few more questions to help build a better understanding of the way this thing works (or worked in your case). What is taken as part of the first or the second online application? When did the biometric reflect on your CIC profile? How long time lapsed between the first refusal and the second application? I suspect a visa application case is closed once a decision is taken and communicated to the applicant. One theory is that your biometric may have been applied as a fresh one to the second application because of (1) the timing (2) both were submitted online; and (3) your biometric was given at the same place as you sent passport for PPR, or (4) it could just be an administrative mistake/discretion. I will add two case studies here to support my position below; CASE 1 @Anamekele submitted 3 online applications, with a single biometric done in Lagos, that were unsucessful. Upon his 4th application via paper route in Abuja, he was required to pay for package transmission fee and he did before his application was accepted. That application was refused and his passport returned to him while all paper/documents were retained. He went to judicial review, won and resubmitted online with no biometric as the original remains valid for 10 years. He didn't pay for transmission because the 5th one was an online application. However, when he got PPR this time he assumably sent his passport using 2-way courier without a transmission fee for stamping. He was informed within 24/48 hrs that his passport is being returned. When he got back the package - via his paid 2 way courier - he was required to pay for transmission fee. He paid for both the package transmission fee and the VFS in-house courier then resent. He got back his stamped passport within a week. CASE 2 Someone I know did biometric in Lagos but was refused visiting visa twice in 2018. Fast forward 2020, she got a PPR for permanent residency along with her child. This happened through the husband who had been an international student but now has PR in Canada. During submission of the passport for stamping through courier to the same vfs Lagos, it was clearly requested and they paid for package transmission. In conclusion, I didn't make the opinion to sound like a law cast in stone so I am aware I could be wrong in one or more of my assumptions. But I was also speaking from the point of practical examples and stated rules of the processes, that I was familiar with. As usual, ire oh!, it shall end in praise and let the learning continue! Thanks for the response. Can you please clarify for the benefit of all the following: Where did you submit your first/second application and was it paper or online application? When you submitted your second application (if paper), did you pay for transmission or not (regardless of whether you sent to where you gave your original biometric)? Answers to the above will help clarify what aspects of my original post may be incorrect. Thanks. TheShaman: |

Yes, the only exception is if the biometric was taken at that centre for that particular application. For subsequent applications that got to approval/PPR, you will need to pay for transmission fee. This applies even if you are submitting at the same centre where you gave your biometric in the preceding application. That is what I believe from the past experiences of people here and those I know personnaly. UPDATED: If you submit paper application, everytime you do (not if this only apply to submitting at a different location than before) you will have to pay for biometric transmission fee even at the point of application. If you get PPR.Approval, and decide to submit passport from a different centre, be ready to pay for a transmission fee as well. mazeb: |

I think you need to do a first degree in a health related discipline (biomedicals, physiotherapy, dentistry, nursing, biochemistry etc) or sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics etc). These are called pre-med school. By the end of the program you should be eligible to apply for a PR. Afterwards, you them apply to medical school. In the US, I knew someone who got married to a citizen/resident before they finished their pre-meds to enable then qualify to apply to med school after first degree. I think you need to declare intention to go to med school at some point before completing the pre-med degree though. This route (in Canada) is best for very young applicants who are getting into first degree as teenagers (16/17/18/19). UwaMmebii: |

My DLI is on the list of approved DLI with Covid-19 plan. What I meant was that my DLI is not yet open to in-person classes just like 99% of all DLIs. Hope that is clear? No airline will carry you if your DLI is not on the approved list. That is part of what they verify at the airport when they ask you for LOA and LOE etc. gugu40: |

Hi, Thanks for the comprehensive response. However, regardless of these cogent responses, I would still advise against submitting an application just yet without (at the minimum) getting the GCMS notes. The notes are up to 10 pages are times and they explain in detail what rationale the VOs considered while making a decision. Although, I would say don't apply until your wife has landed in Canada but if the route you decide on is to re-submit sooner than that, I strongly suggest you wait for the GCMS notes and address the contents objectively. BTW, DLI do not need to open before you can travel to Canada. Am going to be studying from home because my DLI is not open for in-person classes and I travelled down here just a little over 2 weeks ago. It shall end in praises! gugu40: |

Just to add: You may also be able to request a copy of your report from the panel physician/clinic but they will only give the summary of the non-confidential components - HIV, SYPHILIS, and the SERUM CREATININE - test reports. This will likely show the type of tests, the methods/kits used for these, and result including any special comments. I got a copy of this from IOM, Lagos on request 2-days after my medical exams. mcobex: 1 Like 1 Share |

Okay thanks for the response. My humble advise is for you to focus on getting one or two PhD admission offer at this point. You can even talk above visa application (assuming you get offers - funded or not), until about Feb/March 2022. Take it one step at a time but one thing you have on you side is time. Start working on a plan now and putting all the bricks in the right place before you get to the point when you will apply. You will be able to decide more confidently when you get to that bridge, whether to apply alone or with family. What you need are preparation and strategy. Wishing you best of luck in this application cycle. Let us know if you need help with your PhD admission application (assuming you have crossed all the boxes for a potential PhD) and and sure you will get all the support you need on here. Ire oh! Okay, I have a few questions before I can respond and I can only comment on applying alone because that is what I did. I can't comment on joint application because I don't have the experience. For context, I also have 3 kids who are minors ofcourse and I am 41-years old with a full funded PhD offer. I applied alone using family as a strong home ties. I intend to apply for my family in a few weeks and am positive about the outcome. What is important is am here now and it is only a matter of when will my family join me and not IF they will. My questions are as follows; Do you have the funded PhD offer already or not? I believe this is self evident why I ask. What is the total amount of funding you got? So you can check if the amount is enough for you alone to apply or together with family. If you apply with family, the financial proof will be higher than when you apply alone. You can only use your prorated annual funding to claim towards POF and not all. What is the source of the funding; school/employer/Nigerian Government/Canadian Government/International Development Agency? To determine whether you are required to return home after completion or not. Most non-DLI funding require you to return home and technically ineligible for PR application without fulfilling that condition although the practical application vary case by case basis. When are you planning to start the program? Will let you know how much time you have to get start with visa applcations assuming you already have your offer at hand. What is your personal financial position? If the PhD funding is inadequate to cover yours and/or family application, what are the avenues you plan to proof the additional funding required. I will shared my financial projections for applying with family vs. applying alone with you when you reply so you can see the difference. Ire oh! It shall end in praises. Mnwojiji: 2 Likes |
Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 18 by Akannitommy: 3:22pm On Jan 09, 2021 |
Thanks Fratermathy - very lucid as usual. I will add a few thoughts here. Most (not all) PhD candiadates from our part of the world are advanced in age (above 30/35 years of age). I also know those under 25 years but very few and between. Therefore, if you are an established candidate - with family, kids, businesses, etc - please show your plan for the family while you are away. How will the family survive while you are away? Does your spouse have a source of verifiable income to cope in your absence? If no, have you made plans for their sustenance? What are the plans - even a simple explanation that shows you have thought about it may be adequate. So the trick is balancing the art of submitting enough documentation without being desparate but also making sure you cover all possible bases in this regard. Yes, most fully funded PhD applicants have better chance of visa approval, don't take if for granted; do the work. Examples exist that shows even with full funding it is not an automatic approval. You also need to pass a different test of proof when the funding is from Nigeria (say government source) vs. Canadian source. The former requires more work to achieve than the latter. Ire oh! It shall end in praise. fratermathy: 2 Likes |
