Some guests that attended the wedding
between President Goodluck Jonathan’s
foster daughter, Inebharapu and her
husband, Simeon, on Saturday got more
than they bargained for when security
agents, who had difficulties controlling the
surging crowd, resorted to the use of
teargas.
Inebharapu is a daughter of the
President’s cousin.
Among the crowd that attended the
wedding were a large number of women,
who were conveyed to the venue in their
hundreds in long buses belonging to the
Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company.
Policemen, soldiers and officials of the
Department of State Security made frantic
efforts to push back some guests at the
main gate. When the situation became too
rowdy, they used tear gas to disperse the
agitated guests.
While scampering to safety, many people
sustained various degrees of injury.
A pregnant woman simply identified by her
relatives as Oby went into coma and was
quickly rushed into an ambulance
belonging to the Nigeria Security and Civil
Defence Corps.
When she could not be stabilised after
about 15 minutes, she was driven in an
ambulance marked CD 53 A to a hospital.
Good Samaritans helped to resuscitate
many other people by pouring water on
them.
Meanwhile, a former president, Chief
Olusegun Obasanjo, made a surprise
appearance at the church wedding.
Obasanjo and Jonathan have not been
seen together in public events lately,
especially since the public presentation of
his book, My Watch, which is critical of the
President.
The former President had on Monday said
Nigeria was facing economic problems due
to the failure of the present administration
to plan for the rainy day.
He told women leaders from the South-
West, who visited him at his Hilltop
residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, that
the nation’s reserves which as of 2007
stood at $67bn had been depleted by the
Federal Government.
Obasanjo arrived the venue in company
with Dr. Andy Uba and some other aides
before the commencement of the service.
His arrival attracted a loud ovation from
those who were already seated, especially
women.
He was ushered into the hall and took his
seat at the VIP section.
He was later joined at the section by the
President of the Senate, David Mark, and
his wife.
About 20 minutes after, Jonathan entered
the hall with his wife, Patience, and the
bride.
The President and his wife took turns to
exchange pleasantries with Obasanjo, Mark
and other dignitaries before taking their
seats.
Obasanjo’s introduction during the service
also attracted a loud applause from the
congregation.
In his vote of thanks at the service,
Jonathan specially recognised Obasanjo’s
presence, saying, “Let me appreciate our
father, President Olusegun Obasanjo, for
being here with us. Thank you for
coming.”
The President urged the couple to embrace
the virtue of endurance, saying they
should learn to resolve their disagreements
in their bedroom.
He urged them not to bring their problems
to him because he has more than enough
issues to address.
In his sermon, the Primate of the Church
of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, The Most
Revd. Nicholas Okoh, noted that although
marriage as an institution was ordained by
God, it had been marked by problems from
the beginning.
Okoh urged the couple to keep the vow
they made before God in order to attract
divine blessings.
While describing jealousy as positive in
marriage, the clergyman said it was a
defensive mechanism God placed in
marriage to preserve it.
He stressed the need for forgiveness in
relationships, warning the couple against
keeping a diary of offences for each other.
He urged them to allow the love of God to
rule their home, instead of money.
“Money must not rule your marriage. Allow
the love of God to rule your home. Let God
have the final say, not money. Your
marriage should be based on scriptures
and not your certificates which are just
gifts from God,” he said.

The Bank of Industry has stated that the
country does not have sufficient knowledge
of the mining sector due to years of
Nigeria’s dependence on the oil and gas
industry.
The bank said Nigeria had 44 mineral
resources in commercial quantity, which
could generate alternative income for the
country, apart from oil.
This view was expressed on Saturday by
the development bank’s Managing Director,
Mr. Rasheed Olaoluwa, at a one-day
training programme tagged ‘Introduction to
Mining for Bankers,’ organised by Laurel
School of Mines.
In February last year, President Goodluck
Jonathan had inaugurated what the
Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan, which
identified the mining and metal industry as
one of the three sectors to be focused on
in order to diversify the economy.
Olaoluwa told SUNDAY PUNCH the bank
needed to understand how the industry
operates before giving credit facility to
companies ready to invest in the mining
sector.
He said, “The idea of this seminar is to
ensure that as the Bank of Industry, we
gain a sufficiently broad and deep
knowledge of the dynamics of the sector,
of the legal framework, of the issues
involved in doing business in that sector,
the opportunities and challenges.
“This is to ensure that as a lending
institution and as a leading development
bank, we are better prepared to play the
role expected of us under the Nigerian
Industrial Revolution Plan.”
According to the BOI boss, the country has
about 44 mineral resources available in
commercial quantities.
The organiser of the seminar and the
Managing Director of LSM, Mr. Tope
Adebanjo, emphasised the importance of
the mining sector, saying that it would
outlive the crude oil the country depended
on.
“You can see the way the price of oil is
nose-diving and that’s critical. It is no
wonder President Goodluck Jonathan has
reiterated the need for diversification. In
Nigeria, we have several solid minerals left
untapped.
“As it is, Nigeria’s oil production will end in
about 41 years. That is why we have
established the Young Miners Club for
Africa for kids between the ages of 13 and
19. We want them to know what to go into
because during their time, there will be no
oil. We have also established what is
called an Investors Club. It is open to
everyone who wants to explore the
investment opportunities of the mining
industry,” Adebanjo said.

Confederation of African Football
president, Issa Hayatou was of the view
that Nigerian football legend, Austin ‘Jay
Jay’ Okocha deserved to have won the
highest African football honour for all his
masterful displays during his playing days.
In 2003 and 2004 respectively when
Okocha was at his best, the African player
of the year award eluded him, much to
the surprise of most Nigerian soccer
enthusiasts conversant with African
football. Instead, Samuel Eto’o was
crowned back to back for those years,
with Didier Drogba as runner’s up, while
Okocha was third. Coincidentally, the
former Super Eagles midfield maestro was
voted back to back as the BBC African
player of the year for the same period.
This led to conspiracy theories that there
was a Francophone gang-up against
Okocha, who is from Nigeria, an
Anglophone country.
“If I have any regret that will be not
winning The African Footballer of the Year.
But then, I don’t think I was meant to
because I gave my best, but at the end, it
wasn’t good enough,” said Okocha in a
recent interview.
At the 2014 CAF awards, Hayatou seemed
to have felt his pain as he described the
awards established in 1992 as a
magnificent achievement and deserving to
be won by players who have distinguished
themselves on the field of play.
“Players like Jay Jay Okocha would have
been very worthy to feature in the list of
winners. But the technicians decided
otherwise, it is the law of the game,”
Hayatou said in his opening remarks.
Okocha who was named by Pele in his list
of 125 legends, started his career with the
Super Eagles in 1993 in a game against
Cote’d Ivoire during an African World Cup
qualifier. He cemented his place in the
Super Eagles in subsequent years and
was influential in the squad. His was part
of the team that won the African Cup of
Nations for the second time in 1994 and
also gold medal at the Atlanta 96’ Olympic
Games. However, he was unable to inspire
the team to qualify for the 2006 World Cup
in Germany, it was from that moment his
weight began to wane.
There hasn’t been another player like
Okocha in the continent. And perhaps this
way why Yaya Toure has been crowned
four years in a row and he seem bored
receiving the awards at the Eko Hotels
Convention centre last Thursday night as
he did not show any emotion in the
ceremony filled with quality entertainment.
Nigeria Football Federation president, Mr.
Amaju Pinnick congratulated Toure with no
hard feelings, but was quick to add that
Nigerian players need to raise their game
and also take their places in the CAF hall
of fame.
“No one can fault the awards given to
Toure. He deserves it; my only concern is
that Toure is playing for the wrong
premiership team.
“But seriously, this is a wake up call for
our players. It was only Vincent Enyeama
that we have seen this season and for him
to make the final list was a plus for him
being a goalkeeper,” Amaju said.
It was a thrilling evening, the music was

Twenty persons, including a female suicide
bomber, were killed in a major market in
Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, after
an attack by a suspected Boko Haram
sect member on Saturday
The blast also injured 18, the Police Public
Relations Officer of the Borno State Police
Command, Gideon Jubrin, said.
According to him, the incident occurred at
about 12.30pm at a section of the Monday
market.
The market has become a target of the
Boko Haram female suicide bombers as
the Saturday bombing marked the third
time that the market would be attacked in
the last three months.
In a statement, the police spokesman said,
“20 persons were killed in the attack,
including the female suicide bomber, with
18 others injured at the market.”
The death toll may however be higher as
aid and emergency agency workers were
still busy evacuating the dead and the
injured from the scene of the attack.
The spokesman for National Emergency
Management Authority, AbdulKadir Ibrahim,
said workers from the agency were at the
market to render assistance, but declined
to give the casualty figure.
It was gathered that a female suicide
bomber attacked the market at about 12.30
pm Saturday.
The attack was at the Yen-Kaji area of
the market where chickens are sold.

The Federal Government has proposed the
sum of N815.4m in this year’s budget for
the purchase of fuel and lubricants for
cars and generators for the Presidency,
Office of the Secretary to the Government
of the Federation and their parastatals.
The amount was contained in the 2015
budget breakdown which was obtained by
our correspondent on Friday, in Abuja.
The 2015 proposal of N815.4m, for fuel
and lubricants is seven per cent or
N61,984,177 lower than the N877,472,369
approved in 2014.
Out of the N815.4m, the fiscal document
shows that a provision of N131, 911,315
was made for fuel and lubricants for the
State House in 2015.
The breakdown of the figure for state
house shows that plant/generator fuel will
consume N35, 344,855; motor vehicle fuel,
N85, 843,802; and cooking gas/fuel, N10,
102,858; this year.
The State House received lesser provision
of N122, 855,267 for fuel and lubricants in
the 2014 fiscal year.
This was broken down into motor vehicle
fuel, N79, 950,407; plants and generators,
N33, 476,963, and cooking gas/fuel cost,
N9, 427,898.
For the vice-president, the 2015 budget
proposal shows a provision of a total sum
of N38,203,617 for the purchase of fuel
and lubricants.
This is 7.14 per cent or N2,548,624 lower
than the 2014 provision of N35,654,993.
A breakdown of the 2015 budget proposal
of the vice-president shows that fueling of
motor vehicle will consume the sum of
N21,734,332, fueling of plant and generator
has a provision of N12,734,332, while
cooking gas/fuel is expected to consume
the sum of N3,820,453.
Other agencies under the presidency were
also not left out of the provision for fuel
and lubricants.
They are the Office of the Senior Special
Assistant to the President-Millennium
Development Goals with N2,794,080;
Nigeria Institute of Policy and Strategic
Studies,N13,000,000; Bureau for Public
Enterprises, N12,518,641; and the National
Emergency Management Agency with
N13,964,000.
Others are the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission with a provision of
N200,000,000; Bureau of Public
Procurement, N17,179,301;Nigeria Extractive
Industries Transparency Initiative,
N3,469,326; Nigeria Atomic Energy
Commission, N3,000,000; and the Office of
the Chief Economic Adviser to the
President, N2,919,062.
For the Office of the Secretary of the
Government of the Federation, the budget
breakdown shows that a provision of
N48,181,702 was made for 2015.
Just like the presidency, the agencies
under the office of the SGF also had
similar provisions for fuel and lubricants.
They are National commission for
Refugees, N300,000; National Identity
Management Commission,
N46,063,109;National Merit Award,
N7,504,843; Federal Road Safety
Commission, N190,630,492 and New
partnership for AfricanDevelopment,
N10,773,600.
Others are National Action Committee on
Aids, N3,000,000; National Hajj
Commission, N11,131,012; Nigeria Christian
Pilgrim Commission, N21,190,650; National
Lottery Trust Fund, N2,400,000; National
Lottery Regulatory Commission,
N10,000,000; and Servicom N2,786,316.
The rest are Presidential Technical
Committee on Land Reforms, N11,560,000;
National Boundary Commission,
N2,256,765; and Border Communities
Development Agencies N6,350,361
The 2015 budget has a N4.358trn
expenditure figure made up of N412bn for
Statutory Transfers, N943bn for Debt
Service, N2.61trn for Recurrent (Non-Debt)
and N634bn for Capital Expenditure
(inclusive of SURE-P).
While the recurrent vote is 85.8 per cent of
aggregate budget, the capital expenditure
is just 14.2 per cent of the aggregate
spending (inclusive of SURE-P).

The founder of the Synagogue Church of
all Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua, has
claimed that he saw a vision of the
disappearance of a Singapore-bound
AirAsia plane days before the incident.
The AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which had 16
children and 146 other passengers and
crew members on board, was said to have
disappeared from the radar in Surabaya,
Indonesia on Sunday.
Following the disappearance of the
passenger plane, SCOAN released a video
on its YouTube page, in which TB Joshua
accused Indonesia of failing to heed its
earlier warning.
“I have a message for the nation,
Indonesia. This country, Indonesia – I don’t
know what is happening. They should pray
for Indonesia. That is, the nation Indonesia.
When it comes to this disaster issue, I
don’t want to mention it. It looks so nasty
to me to mention – a situation where it will
cost a lot of lives, suddenly.
“This is a crash. Why should this continue
to happen there? I think there is a nature
– a geographical atmosphere. There is
something there that they should look
into,” TB Joshua stated in the video sermon
which the church claimed had been shot
days before the plane’s disappearance.
The church added that on its YouTube
page that in spite of the Indonesia’s failure
to look into the “geographical
atmosphere,” TB Joshua and his followers
had begun praying “that God would
strengthen the family members and friends
of all those involved in this tragic incident.”
But the British High Commissioner to
Ghana, Jon Benjamin, urged the general
public to dismiss TB Joshua’s claims.
“But he couldn’t prophecy his own church
collapsing, killing over 100?” Benjamin, a
British foreign service officer of 28 years,
who has simultaneous diplomatic
accreditationto Togo, Benin and Burkina
Faso, said via his Twitter page.
Apart from the UK diplomat who carpeted
TB Johsua over his claims, an online
outrage trailed his prophesy.
A Black Briton, based in Croydon, United
Kingdom, Melody Badza-Chinouriri,
lambasted for claiming to have foretold the
air disaster.
Badza-Chinourir said, “I will never run to a
man who does not even own up to the
disaster he failed to avert at his backyard.
He even blatantly refused to attend the
coroner inquest despite repeated
invitations. No accountability whatsoever.
“I hope Nigeria will wake up and arrest
him this time round. He is putting that
country on the spot for wrong reasons. Let
him prophesy all the killings happening in
Nigeria. Many people have died in Nigeria
than Indonesia. You have a prophet; why
are you perishing then in Nigeria?”
A respondent on Lawyer Omegad queried
the credibility of the said video, adding
that TB Joshua’s controversial prophecies
were useless as they had over the years
failed to redeem lives.
“How come we are only seeing this so-
called prophesy today? It’s obvious the
video was posted many hours after the
plane has already gone missing. I doubt
this because God revels to redeem,”
Omegad said.
Another online activist, Emeka Martins,
said, “Indeed most Nigerians are gullible.
Why should they believe in prophesies of
end-time fake pastors. TB Joshua should
explain to the court what led to the death
of those people in his synagogue. Why did
he not prophesy his own calamity?”
While other online commentators taunted
the clergyman strings of prophecies, some
Nigerians challenged him to foretell the
day in which the abducted Chibok girls
would be freed by the fundamentalist
Islamist sect, Boko Haram.
“We don’t want to know which disaster is
next, we want a prayer that will bring the
Chibok girls back home,” a respondent,
Samuel David, wrote on SCOAN’s YouTube
page.
However, TB Joshua’s followers rallied
round him, fending off criticisms of what
they described as his divine calling.
A Malawian, Elsie PembeKumwenda,
insisted on Facebook that the cleric is God
sent, saying, “Prophet TB Joshua is doing
what no one can do today. Whatever he
prophesises comes to pass, yet we don’t
believe him. We usually regret our actions
when it (tragedy) happens. May God give
our prophet more of his grace.”

All Progressives Congress (APC) vice
presidential candidate Prof. Yemi Osinbajo
has attributed the poor implementation of
the Subsidy Re-investment and
Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) to its
alleged hijack by chieftains of the ruling
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Osinbajo spoke with reporters at a
restaurant in Lagos, in continuation of his
meet-the-people campaign tour.
Claiming that the Federal Government
might have had the best of intention in
establishing the programme, he noted that
its stated objectives have not been
achieved due largely to its abuse and
mismanagement by government’s cronies.
He said: “I make bold to say that in terms
of stated objectives, the SURE-P has failed
due to the wrong strategy adopted in its
implementation.
“The subsidy fund has been mismanaged
and abused. The way and manner it was
set up makes it open for abuse.”
On the objectives of his campaign tour
aimed at interfacing directly with the
people, Osinbajo, a Senior Advocate of
Nigeria (SAN), said it was part of listening
to the concerns of the people and
explaining the vision of the APC, if it forms
the next government at the centre.
“We are moving around Lagos to meet the
people. It’s a phased plan and we have
plans to move to other states in due
course. The election is about 40 days
away and within this period, we want to
cover as many states as possible,” he
explained.
On the agenda of an APC-led Federal
Government, the former Lagos State
Commissioner for Justice and Attorney
General said job creation and security
would form the fulcrum of its policies.
According to him, every policy of the
government would be geared towards
providing jobs for the people.
He added that within the first few months
in office, the 36 states would be mandated
to provide a minimum of 20,000 jobs as
immediate relief to tackle unemployment.
In addition, he said employers of labour,
who employ a certain number of people,
would be offered incentives by the
government, while agriculture would also
be accorded priority through massive
subsidy.
Osinbajo added that APC-led
administration would introduce the
construction of low cost housing, provision
of one meal per day for primary school
pupils with its multiplier effects in the
agriculture sector and payment of stipends
to graduates, who have undergone
vocational training after the completion of
their National Youth Service Corp (NYSC).
He noted: “Eighty per cent of graduates do
not have jobs and youths are disenchanted
and something needs to be done urgently.
For me, my interest in politics is all about
the people. As the Attorney General in
Lagos State, I created the office of the
Office of the Public Defender (OPD) to
defend the rights of poor people.
“Any responsible government must cater
for the needs of the people. I can assure
you that an APC-run government headed
by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari would take
the welfare of the people very seriously.
There would also be social security for the
disabled and the elderly.”

A former head of state and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has explained why he did not submit his certificates and credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying that the documents are with the military.

This came to light yesterday during a visit by journalists to the headquarters of INEC in Abuja where it was revealed that Buhari’s academic qualifications were not on display, unlike those of other presidential candidates including that of his main rival, President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Explaining the development in an affidavit he deposed to before an Abuja High Court, Buhari said that all his certificates were with the Secretary, Military Board. The affidavit was dated November 24, 2014 and was stamped and received by INEC on December 18, 2014.

Buhari had said in the affidavit, “I am the above-named person and deponent to this affidavit therein. All my academic qualifications documents as filled in my presidential form, President APC/001/2015, are currently with the Secretary, Military Board, as of the time of presenting this affidavit.
