The Cameroonian military has begun cracking down on Nigerians in the Bakassi peninsula suspected of evading taxes.

Cameroon gained total control of the peninsula in August 2013, but most inhabitants in the oil-rich area are Nigerians

“We don’t understand Cameroon’s tax laws,” a provisions store owner, Stanley Obi, told the Hausa service of the Voice of America (VOA), adding that he has seen an array of people seeking payments.

“At times, you see the council come to collect theirs. After, the tax officers will come, police will come; we are just confused with the whole system,” Obi said.

Obi also said a curfew was imposed on the peninsula last week following disputes between businessmen and groups of tax collectors.

Fresh fish retailer, Na Eric, said that ever since Cameroon gained sovereignty over the peninsula, Nigerians in Bakassi have frequently been harassed by Cameroonian soldiers.

“It is a means of killing our businesses,” he said.

The governor of the southwest region in which Bokassi is located, Bernard Okalia Bilai, confirmed that his administration had imposed a night curfew in the area, saying the decision is to halt people coming from Nigeria’s Cross River State following a meeting held at which peninsula residents complained that others were disrespecting maritime borders, attacking the locals and refusing to pay taxes.

“Nigerians must understand that Bakassi is now a Cameroonian territory and whoever lives there must submit to all national rules and regulations, including paying taxes,” the governor said.

Immediately after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, tax collection in Bakassi was suspended, but as of mid-August 2013, residents had to start paying their share.

The governor accused Nigerians of disrespecting the ICJ ruling’s terms by refusing to pay taxes.

In 2002, the ICJ ruling had awarded control of the disputed Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon, and Nigeria eventually decided not to appeal the ruling, sparking protests from many Bakassi residents. And other Nigerians.

In 2008, the ICJ gave Nigeria five years to transition and cede control. As of August 2013, Nigerians – who constitute 90 percent of the peninsula’s population – had to obtain residence permits and be treated as foreign nationals.

Those who decided to become Cameroonians had to acquire national identity cards and respect Cameroon laws

The United Nations-backed Green Tree Agreement of 2006 set terms of the handover and one of the articles states that there shall be no indiscriminate collection of taxes within the Bakassi peninsula.

Meanwhile, efforts by LEADERSHIP to get the Cameroon Embassy in Abuja to comment on the issue were fruitless as officials of the Commission failed to reply to the e-mail sent to the Commission’s official e-mail address, info@cameroonhighcomabuja.com.

i totally do not agree with you; God did not create albinos. Albinism is more like a pigment dysfunction. Nature has never been perfect. Just like we have people born blind, dumb, retarded. There are laws guiding this universe e.g the winter season is a slated december through febuary period(a law made by nature/God),if the season should eventually extend into march or april it's simply just a climatic change which is normal but yet has nothing to do with God causing the climate change. God has nothing to do with dysfunctions like albinism and the rest. Would love to elaborate but im driving.

Following intelligence reports that the
extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is
making frantic moves to recruit Nigerian
youths, the Federal Government has taken
a decision to restrict Nigerians from
travelling to Iraq, Syria and other volatile
countries in the Middle East.
SUNDAY PUNCH also reliably gathered
on Friday that intelligence agencies such
as the Defence Intelligence Agency and
the Nigerian Intelligence Agency had
issued an international warning, requesting
that other countries should refuse visa to
Nigerians going to war-ravaged countries
in the Middle East.
This would make it almost possible for
Nigerians to get a visa from the country to
any of the countries listed under the
restriction alert in the Middle East.
Similarly, Sunday PUNCH learnt that the
screening of inbound international
passengers at major airports in the country
had been intensified in the past one week.
Airports where such screenings are being
carried out include those in Kano, Lagos
and Abuja.
It was learnt that apart from the bomb
detectors used for all passengers,
movements of some citizens of some
Middle East countries were monitored right
from their arrival in the country.
Senior aviation security officials who spoke
to our correspondents noted that the
recent security alert by the Coordinator of
the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike
Omeri, had been taken seriously.
Omeri, in a statement on Tuesday, had
said that agents of ISIS were in the
country to recruit Nigerian youths to fight
for the terrorist group.
In a statement signed by his Special
Adviser, David Okoji, Omeri said three
South Africans were among fighters
recruited by ISIS under the guise of
humanitarian support groups for refugees
in Nigeria.
Speaking in a telephone interview with one
of our correspondents in Abuja on Friday,
Omeri confirmed that three South Africans
had been hired to recruit young fighters
for ISIS from Africa.
He said, “This is why we are alerting
Nigerians to beware. They could come in
the name of offering scholarships, visas or
recruitment into international humanitarian
organisations. Young Nigerians should be
wary of such offers because they would
come through subtle means.
“We are raising the alarm so that no
Nigerian would fall victim. This is security
information from highly dependable
sources. Government agencies have been
put on the alert and if any of them is not
aware, they should please ensure that
they put the necessary measures in place
to thwart the effort.”
Omeri said government would work with
foreign and international bodies to frustrate
any effort to recruit young Africans,
especially Nigerians to fight for the
terrorist organisation, ISIS.
He also disclosed that NOA would explore
the existing structures it had in the states
to ensure that the campaign went down to
the grass roots through traditional
institutions and authorities.
It was learnt that although flights from
Syria and Iraq hardly came into Nigeria,
especially since the crisis in the countries,
passengers from the Middle East nations
were under surveillance.
An official with the Federal Airports
Authority of Nigeria, who pleaded
anonymity, said, “Nothing seems to be
impossible nowadays but if they (ISIS) are
in Nigeria, they must have passed through
our land borders, which are porous. We
have however increased the intensity of
our passenger screening.”
A top aviation security officer, who also
pleaded anonymity, said, “Apart from the
regular screening through the security
doors and bomb detectors, we monitor
movements and gestures of travellers.
“Any move that is unusual will be checked
immediately.”
Speaking further on the visa ban on
Nigerians who wish to travel to the
Middle-East, another top security officer
said, “There is the issue of recruitment of
terrorists within the country as shown by
the story of the 13-year-old suicide
bomber in Kano, whose father was said to
have forced her into the act.
“The security agencies have issued a visa
refusal request to embassies to prevent
Nigerians from travelling to such countries.
“The situation now is such that if you are
a Nigerian and you try to get a visa from
anywhere to those countries, you will
attract serious suspicion and you would be
questioned rigorously.
“It may be possible in some cases for you
to travel without visa within Africa but it is
impossible for you to travel outside the
continent without one.”
The Syrian Embassy could not be reached
for comments as calls made to the
mission’s mobile line failed to connect.
Also, an email to the embassy did not elicit
any response.
Efforts to get the Iraqi embassy to speak
on its alleged visa restrictions to Nigerians
was abortive. Repeated calls to the
embassy mobile line went unanswered. An
email that was sent to its mail box, failed
to deliver.

The All Progressives Congress has said
former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was
sympathetic to the cause of the party
because of his desire for positive change
in 2015. Deputy National Chairman (North)
of the All Progressives Congress, Senator
Lawal Shuaibu said this in an interview
with reporters in Abuja, on Sunday. He
noted that the former President who is still
an active member of the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party, was like most Nigerians;
desirous of an end to maladministration
and impunity. According to him, while it
was true that Obasanjo is not a card
carrying member of the APC, his interest in
bringing about a change in the way things
are done is glaring.
Shuaibu said, “We don’t have any
connection with Obasanjo other than
Obasanjo sympathising with anybody that
could effect change in this country. “He is
not a member of our party mind you, he is
still a PDP man but for the fact that he is
a former democratic President in this
country people listen to him. “More often
than not, some people go to seek for his
advice both from PDP, APC and other
parties. But he is interested in the type of
change we are driving at, so he is to a
certain extent sympathetic with the APC.”
He noted that there was nothing wrong
with the APC receiving members of the
PDP who have come to realise their
mistakes. The APC chieftain said the party
has put in place a machinery to ensure
strict adherence to its policies and
programmes as contained in its manifesto.
He explained that parties which came
together to form the APC have all agreed
to adhere strictly to the code of conduct
as well as ethics enshrined in the founding
principles of the new party. Shuaibu also
assured Nigerians that the APC will strictly
observe the provisions of its constitution
and the party manifesto as well as ensure
the supremacy of the party. Reacting to
the over N21 billion raised by PDP to fund
President Jonathan’s re-election, Shuaibu
said his party was not worried. He,
however, said that of the APC will be
transparent and made public in a manner
consistent with its avowed commitment to
transparency.

Liberian opposition politician and former
football star George Weah won a landslide
victory in Senate elections in Ebola-
ravaged Liberia, official results showed
Sunday.
Weah — who in 1995 became the first and
only African yet to win the Ballon d’Or as
European footballer of the year and who
played for AC Milan, Paris Saint Germain
and Monaco — trounced his rival Robert
Sirleaf, the son of Liberian President Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf.

poll to fill half the seats of the Senate.
Turnout was around 25 percent, according
to the national election commission.
The election was originally due to be held
in October but was postponed over the

independent, registered 10.8 percent of the
vote.
Montserrado county, in northwestern
Liberia, is the west African country’s most
populous region and home to nearly a
third of its population of four million.
Liberia tops the number of Ebola deaths in
the current outbreak with 3,384 fatalities,
but it has seen a clear decrease of new
transmissions in the past month.
Ebola has killed 7,693 people, almost all of
them in the west African epicentres of
Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
