The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA,
has fixed December 17, 2014 for a Special
National Convention to formally ratify the
appointment of the Anambra State
Governor Chief Wiliie Obiano as its leader
and Chairman of the Board of Trustees,
BOT.
The party will also use the Special
National Convention to adopt President
Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential
candidate, approve and adopt the APGA
amended Constitution.
The National Working Committee (NWC) also
suspended the Abia State Chairman of the
party, Prince Nnanna Ukaegbu from APGA
with immediate effect for what it termed
palpable anti-party activities and directed
its National Vice Chairman South-East,
Uchenna Okogbuo who is also from the
state to oversee, coordinate and manage
the affairs of the party in conjunction with
the Abia state Executive Committee of the
party.
The party while rising from a meeting of
its NWC in Abuja, also considered and
approved the outcome of the Screening
Exercise for the National Assembly
aspirants in Anambra State.
The National Chairman of APGA, Chief
Victor Umeh and National Secretary Dr.
Sani Abdulahi Shinkafi said In a statement
that the NWC resolved that the purported
clearance of Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu
by the 5-man National Assembly
Screening Appeal Panel be reversed and
his non clearance be restored for the
following reasons.
According to them, “The 5-man National
Assembly Screening Appeal Panel became
truncated and therefore improperly
constituted when it did not sit as a full
panel in accordance with Article 23(2) of
the APGA Electoral Guidelines for primary
elections 2014.

School violence is widely held to have
become a serious problem in recent
decades in many countries, especially
where weapons such as guns or knives are
involved. It includes violence between
school students as well as physical attacks
by students on school staff.
Mary-Ann Oguezuonu, a female teacher at
Obosima Secondary Technical School,
Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of
Imo State was attacked with cutlasses by
irate male students of the college.
Reports emanating from Obosima revealed
that the students attacked the nursing
mother with machetes.
The teacher’s alleged offence was that she
spotted a female student that changed her
school uniform into a skimpy outfit and
threatened that the college authorities
would send her packing if she wore such
an indecent dress to school again.
I was there when this one happened.
My English teacher in SS II,Mr Duke went black out after being beaten by some bad-eggs called students just because he punished them for not submitting their assignment.its such an unforgettable experience.This is my final year in higher school and i can categorically state here that i have seen a lot pertaining to violence over the years.

Consumption of garri is as important as
anything among the populace of West
Africa like Togo, Nigeria, Benin Republic
and others. It gains this importance not
only because of its cheap and readily
available source of food but also a fast
food which requires sugar, coconut,
groundnut, meat, fish, or processed
preferred products like Kulikuli (yoruba) and
water for the readiness of its consumption.

Its transformation into other foods like Eba
also increases its vitality and consumption
among the African populace to the extent
that it calls for no public advertisement
before its sale us made. However, the
consumption if this African renowned grain
has been reported to cause detriments to
the eye like blindness, anemia, cough,
among others. Most importantly, eye
defects which have made some populace
enemies to the consumption of garri and
its by food products.

Arguably, the cause
of this is reported to be the presence of
excess hydrocyanic acid in cassava which
garri is made from due to unwell
processing. The recommendation by WHO
is at most 10ppm of cyanic acid in the
food product. However, its excess,
continuous and frequent consumption may
cause the accumulation and thereby
leading to its adverse effects. The presence
of this acid in cassava could be
understood as the water extract from
cassava kills plants because of its
concentrated form.

Aside eye defects, this
organic acid also causes intestinal
problems and make ulcer patient to
deteriorate. Same goes to other cassava
product s which when not well processed
will cause harm than than good.

Conclusively, excess frequent taking of
garri especially unwell processed one can
hinder one's health and give room for
unhealthiness.

Recommendation

- All our garri producers should learn the
technical know-how of well garri
processing and quality control activities
should be put in place.

- Verification of sources of food nutrient
should be cultivated ; carbohydrates should
be sought from other diverse sources
which are more nutrient rich example
potatoes, brown rice.

- Other complementing source of food
should be sought is as to reduce its lethal
effect.

NOTE: Eye defects could as well be caused based on one or more of the
following:

- Genetics

- Environmental factor

- Nutrient deficiency

- Nonchalant acts

- Lack of healthy practice.

Federal government officials are now
kicking themselves over the phantom
ceasefire deal with Boko Haram
brokered by Idriss Déby, the
president of Chad.
A source in the know of the negotiations
told TheCable that the federal government
is still uncertain if the dummy was
deliberately sold to Nigeria by Déby or if
the Chadian president himself was
hoodwinked into believing it was genuine.
But the word in government circles is that
Déby was working for Boko Haram as he
has refused to communicate with Nigeria
since the insurgents renewed their attacks.
“Nigerian government officials no longer
have access to Déby who is now said to
be sick. It appears he set us up to drop
our guard and allow Boko Haram to gain
ground,” the official said.
A man claiming to be the general
secretary of Boko Haram, named Danladi
Ahmadu, had told the Voice of
America on October 17 that the
government was negotiating with
representatives of the group.
Alex Badeh, an air chief marshal and chief
of defence staff, later addressed the
media asking Nigerians soldiers to
ceasefire because of the “agreement”,
which he said included releasing the 219
Chibok schoolgirls in Boko Haram captivity.
TheCable also reported how Déby put
the deal together, revealing how he said
Boko Haram got in touch with him, how he
authenticated the message and how he
got the Nigerian government involved in
the negotiations.
But a journalist with links to the group
had described the claim as “shadows
and bubbles”
and warned Nigerians not to believe it.
Not long after that, Boko Haram became
more ferocious in their attacks, taking over
more Nigerian towns, including the country
home of Badeh.
A government official who spoke with
TheCable on Saturday pointed accusing
fingers at Déby, accusing him of setting a
trap for Nigeria.
“The period of the phantom negotiations
gave the terror group time to regroup,
reinforce and restrategise, which is the
intent of Déby for asking the Nigerian
government to negotiate a ceasefire with
Boko Haram,” the source said.
“As soon as Nigeria began to make a lot
of gains in the war against Boko Haram,
owing to the efforts of the military and
President Goodluck Jonathan who has been
discussing with regional leaders to halt the
insurgency, and at a time the commanders
of the sect were being rounded up, that
was when the Chadian president
approached the Nigerian government
asking that it mediates between the parties
in the conflict.
“The discussions between the government
and the Chadian president on Boko Haram
started in September. However, Déby said
he was already talking with Boko Haram.
“The government was trying to verify the
authenticity of Boko Haram’s
representatives in the supposed
negotiations, but Déby asked the Nigerian
government to take a chance that he had
done the verification already. He affirmed
that Boko Haram’s representatives were
truly standing in for the group in the
negotiations.”
It was at this stage the government
nominated the principal secretary to the
president, Hassan Tukur, to be part of the
negotiations in N’Djamena, the capital of
Chad.
“Tukur was the one spearheading the
dialogue with Boko Haram on behalf of the
Nigerian government. He had the first
contact with group. It was still in the
middle of the supposed negotiations that
Danladi Ahmadu announced on Voice of
America that the group had ceased fire.
Following the announcement of ceasefire
by the group, the Nigerian government
equally announced a ceasefire on October
17 for the supposed negotiations to
continue.
“A Nigerian delegation left for Chad on
October 21 for talks with Boko Haram, but
the Chadian president became evasive. The
Nigerian delegation was told that Déby
was sick and that the meeting be
rescheduled for October 23.
“However, on that date, the delegation was
told that the Chadian president was still
sick after waiting for six hours. The
delegation made visits to Chad a number
of times, but met a brickwall.
“As Boko Haram’s resumed attacks grew
in intensity, the Nigerian government
became worried. Many attempts were
made to inquire from the Chadian
president who was supposed to be
mediating between the Nigerian
government and Boko Haram, but the
attempts were all futile.
“France was privy to the botched
negotiations, but said nothing just like the
Chadian government.
“It became clear to the Nigerian
government that Déby was working for
Boko Haram. The government of Chad has
not said a word to the Nigerian
government since Boko Haram’s resumed
onslaughts. It has simply refused to make
any comment or communicate with the
Nigerian government.
“The Nigerian government has also ceased
to speak with the Chadian government on
the matter since it is now clear that Chad
is working with Boko Haram.”
The official said the Nigerian military will
now resort to use of force against Boko
Haram.
“The only option left for the Nigerian
government is to continue to use force to
end the crisis. As it is now, there is no
negotiation or mediation going on. The
statements by some government officials
that the abducted Chibok girls would
return soon were based on assurances by
the Chadian government, but now there is
no negotiation going on anywhere,” he
said.
“It is important to add that the Nigerian
government decided to honour Chad’s
request for negotiations with Boko Haram,
because it was the first time a foreign
government would be mediating in the
protracted insurgency in the country. Other
individuals have tried, but the government
has always spurned them.”
Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the sect,
released a video denouncing the ceasefire
deal, saying he had already married off
the kidnapped schoolgirls

There is a gradual shift from the
West to the East as India is now
Nigeria’s leading trade partner with
oil and non-oil exports hitting N1.8
trillion.
The United States of America, which used
to be Nigeria’s leading trade partner,
particularly in the oil sector, has ceased
buying oil from Nigeria as they now
produce 8.5 million barrel of oil daily.
The Federal Government, as a result, said
it would be expanding its non-oil export
base through the Nigeria Export Promotion
council, (NEPC) with focus on diversifying
its economic base beyond the oil sector.
Olusegun Aganga, the Minister of Industry,
Trade and Investment during a public
presentation over the weekend, said govern­
ment has rolled out an industrial policy
that would expand its non-oil base and
advance the country economically.
He explained that the Nigerian Industrial
Revolution Plan(NIRP)is leveraging on
where Nigeria has competitive advantage,
while dropping attention from the oil sector
and shifting attention to industrialsiation
where Nigeria has comparative advantage.
According to Aganga, “Government through
its industrialisation policy has attracted
various investments in the country in the
last four years. For instance, Dangote
investment of $16 billion, Flour mill
investment of $1.2billion, Indorama in
fertilizer investment of $1.2 billion and $1.4
billion investment in ethanol. GWC $1.2 bil­
lion in petro-chemicals”
He disclosed that that the NEPC is being
positioned to focus on non-oil exports
which he described as a game changer for
the country with a target of 10 years
strategic plan.
Speaking further on investment drive,
Aganga said: “Nigeria would be create
more jobs with investment of $9 billion in
Petro-chemicals and would make more
money. With the investment policy in
cement, Dangote has largest cement,
Olams has the largest rice mill in sub-
saharan African worth $72 million,P&G is
the largest Investment by U.S company in
Nigeria”.
He assured the nation of efforts in various
other sectors in loosening the constraints
being encountered by investors, as he said
that CAC has reduced the cost of reduction
in business registrations.
He added further that the ministry has
embarked on 62 reforms in line with the
industrialization policies of the present
administration.

At 14, he ran away from home. Now,
he wants to go back to school

It was about noon. The heat from the
afternoon sun baked Oshodi with intensity,
and perspiration ran down the cheeks of
the folks plying their trade in the chaotic
commercial environment. A young teenager
sat on a fence close to the main road. At
that particular time, a good number of his
peers would be in school. But he was
inside the scorching sun, trying to eke out
a living. He eagerly hoped to see a
commercial driver that would hire his
services for that day. Meet Seun Folajin, a
17-year-old homeless teenager who has
been living underneath the bridge at
Oshodi since 2011.
This afternoon, he looked miserable and
despondent, his eyes as red as fresh
blood. He was casually attired in a black
round-neck shirt, and his dark skin was
coated with a mix of sweat and dust.
When the reporter sought to know where
he stayed, he replied without batting an
eyelid: “I sleep under the bridge.” Because
he needed to work that afternoon, the boy
assured the reporter that he would be
available to talk the following day.
In Lagos, bus assistants are called
conductors. And it is through working as a
bus conductor that he gets money for food
and clothing.
Indeed, the following day, Seun was found
on that same spot. Today, he was garbed
in a red T-shirt and a pair of blue denim
trousers. And he opened up on how he
ran away from his home in Osun State to
become a vagabond at 14.
Seun said he was living with his father in
Iragbiji, a community in Osun State until
four years ago. He said his father was
fond of maltreating him, and when a boy
suggested that there was better life in
Lagos, the then 14-year-old boy
immediately made up his mind about
leaving home, and his abusive father, for
good.
Seun told the reporter: “It was a boy that
I met on the street that brought me to
Lagos. I could no longer bear the suffering
in my father’s house and I ran from home
in Iragbiji to Oshogbo. The boy told me
that we would come to Lagos to stay with
his elder brother, and that we would be
making as much as 5000 naira each day.
From Osogbo, we boarded a train to
Ibadan. We had to sit in the compartment
at the back.”
Throughout the journey, the night breeze
tormented the youngsters like a monstrous
demon in the open space where they sat.
“We got to Ibadan around 4am after
having many stopovers on the way. We
stayed in the railway station till daylight.
The boy told me that we should pick
scraps on the ground in order to sell. But
we were lucky because we saw a school
bag, and found 2, 850 naira inside the
bag. We went to buy food at the canteen,
and an elderly man paid for our food.”
According to him, they were looking so
dirty. He then suggested to his friend that
they should take a shower and buy some
clothes before embarking on their journey
to Lagos. He said: “After buying some
clothes out of the money, we had 1600
naira left and we started our journey to
Lagos. The driver got to Oshodi at 6 pm,
and we alighted from the vehicle and
climbed the bridge.”
Little did Seun know that underneath that
bridge would be his new home for the next
couple of years.
“I have been sleeping under the bridge
since 2011. I lost my mother in 2007 and
my younger brother died a year after. I
went to stay with my grandmother who is
a traditionalist at Ikirun. She used to make
incisions on my body. That was the reason
I ran from her and went to stay with my
aunt. Then I was in Primary 6.
“After staying with my aunt for some time,
my elder sister made an arrangement with
my daddy’s friend and they took me to a
white man at Ila-Orangun in Osun State. I
was enrolled at Oke Iragbiji Grammar
School at Iragbiji. The white man said I
was older for JS1 and they took me to JS
3.My daddy came to take me from the
white man’s house in 2010.”
He remembered with nostalgia the day he
met his friend at Oshogbo around 10 pm.
Then, he had run from home for three
days. He said: “I went to school and came
home late. My father and his new wife
beat me mercilessly, and for many days, I
was not given any food. Even my elder
sister came to plead on my behalf but my
father rained curses on her. After I left
Iragbiji, the boy that brought me to Lagos
gave me 100 naira to buy food at the
railway station in Oshogbo. He told me we
would come to Lagos to stay with his
elder brother.
“It was when we got to Oshodi that I
knew he was lying, but I had to survive.
While he was begging, I was carrying
loads for people and selling pirated CDs for
some commission a week after we came. I
even wanted to go back but I saved some
money with an old man for months and he
disappeared. I later made friends and
started working as a conductor. I did not
go home until six months ago. The
condition is not even better back home
because my father still does not want to
see me.”
Seun said he makes between N500 and
N1000 daily as a conductor. But now, the
little boy is tired of life under the bridge.
“I work daily to get money and even save
some with a man who helps us to keep
our money. But our ‘seniors’ molest us the
way they like. Sometimes at night, they
will dip their hands into our pockets and
take our money and you dare not say
anything. They use planks to beat us
whenever they think we offend them. We
don’t sleep on time because task force
officials come at night to arrest us. We will
wander till 12 am and sleep on the
pavement.”
Asked if he knew the kind of future that
awaits homeless kids, he asserted that he
was quite aware that there was, really, no
future for him and his peers under the
bridge.
“I want to leave this place (underneath the
bridge at Oshodi). This is because I desire
to be great in the future. I am sad at the
kind of life I live. I want to go back to
school and also learn a technical skill. I am
not going back to Osun State because
there is no future in my parents’ house.
But I have faith that one day, I will not be
in this place anymore.”

There was confusion at the
Magistrate’s Court II at Azare, Katagum
Local Government Area of Bauchi State,
when the registrar of the court slapped a
woman over N50.
The husband of the woman is said to be
unhappy over the development and had
subsequently dragged the Registrar to
Magistrate Court I to seek redress.
It all started when Lado Ibrahim, a Fulani
woman, who sells fresh cow milk, known
as Nunu in local parlance, demanded for
her money from the registrar identified as
Joseph Obaje, in the court premises.
Joseph was said to have bought Nono
worth N50 from 38-year-old Lado and
had refused to pay.
He was clearly infuriated when Lado
persistently asked for her money. But
instead of paying her money, the court
Registrar was said to have slapped the
mother of five and allegedly called her a
prostitute.
The development prompted the Miyetti
Allah Cattle Breeders Association in
Katagum Local Government Area to
intervene.
The National Deputy Chairman II of the
association, Muhammad Geri, told
newsmen that the matter would have
degenerated into a religious crisis, but for
their prompt intervention.
He said Lado’s husband felt aggrieved over
what happened and was slighted that
instead of reporting his wife to him, the
registrar slapped her.
“He is a peaceful man and does not want
to take the law into his hands, so he went
to court,” the Miyetti leader said.

Residents of Onimaba, College Bus stop,
Ikotun Road, Igando, Lagos have been
living in fear since last week Thursday
when a letter purportedly written by armed
robbers circulated their streets.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the letter,
which was typed on an A4 paper and
scattered on the streets, was noticed by
residents as they woke up on Thursday
morning.
About 20 copies of the letter were said to
have been picked up from streets such as
Lateef Bello, Ogunbewon, Taiwo Adediran,
and Alhaji Hamzat.
Our correspondent learnt that the people
called the attention of landlords to the
document, and the landlords association
was said to have reported at the Igando
Police Division.
During a visit to the area on Friday
afternoon, PUNCH Metro obtained a copy
of the letter.
In the paper, the robbers wrote that
residents should be prepared to ‘entertain’
them as they were coming for their end-
of-the-year packages. The robbers added
that they could strike the area at any time
they deemed fit.
The letter reads, “Be prepared, be
prepared, be prepared. Our dues must be
paid this festive season. Nobody can stop
us as we can strike at any time. Only
enough money can save your life.
“To be forewarned is to be fore-harmed.
We have warned you in this area, and if
you have ears, you ought to hear.”
Speaking with PUNCH Metro , one of the
landlords, who pleaded anonymity for
security reasons, said the robbers also
dispatched the letter to neighbouring areas
such as Pako and Irepodun.
He said, “On Thursday morning, around
4.30am when people normally start to go
to work, we noticed the papers scattered
on our streets. Some unknown persons, no
doubt, had dumped the letter overnight in
the area.
“We have about 18 streets in the area.
When we saw it, we called on our CDA
chairman, Alhaji Sarumi, who in turn called
on the police at Igando.”
Another landlord, who identified himself
simply as Alhaji Lawal, showed our
correspondent the dilapidated fences of a
government primary school in the area
which the robbers allegedly used as a
hideout.
He said, “The threat letter is very
disturbing. The last time we had a robbery
incident in this area was about six months
ago. At that time, they came in through
the compound of Igando Local Government
Primary School, and escaped through
Potoku, an unfenced canal at an end of
our street. Potoku Canal reaches all the
way to Lagos State University Road,
Igando.
“We are calling on the police to intensify
efforts in securing our area. We want the
Area Commander, Area M Idimu, and the
Special Anti-Robbery Squad to beam their
searchlight on our areas.”
The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP
Kenneth Nwosu, however said the
residents had yet to report to the police.
He added that the public should always
avail the police of relevant information to
enable them ensure security of lives and
property.
He said, “The incident has not been
reported to the Igando Police Division.
However, if the residents have received
such letter, let them bring it to the police.
If there is such information, we will do well
to ensure we deploy enough personnel in
the area. The responsibility of the police is

South Africa and Orlando Pirates captain
and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was shot
dead late Sunday near Johannesburg, a
police spokesman told AFP, with club
officials describing his slaying as a “loss to the nation.
Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said
Meyiwa, 27, was gunned down at a house
in Vosloorus, a township about 30
kilometres south of the city, and declared
dead on admission to hospital.
“We can confirm that Bucs (Pirates)
goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot
and sadly declared dead on arrival at
hospital,” the South African Police Service
(SAPS) said on its Twitter feed.
Police later said there were seven people
inside the house, including Meyiwa, when
two suspects entered and another
remained outside.
Makgale said that the motive behind the
attack remained unclear
The incident happened at around 2000 SA
time (1800 GMT) in Vosloorus township,
added police who did not comment on
some media reports that the shooting was
sparked by a row over a mobile phone.
“There was an altercation and Senzo
Meyiwa was shot. The three suspects fled
on foot after the shooting.
“We can assure South Africans that we
will do all we can to bring Meyiwa’s killers
to book.
“A reward of up to R150 000 ($14,000) is
being offered for any information that can
lead to arrests.”
Pirates, one of the most popular and
successful South African football clubs,
also confirmed that the player had been
killed.
“@Orlando_Pirates family has learned with
sadness of the untimely death of our
number 1 keeper & captain Senzo
Meyiwa,” the club tweeted.
Irvin Khoza, the club chairman, added:
“This is a sad loss to Senzo’s family
especially his children, to Orlando Pirates
& the nation.”
Meyiwa played for his club in Soweto
Saturday and has been in outstanding
form for the national team during recent
2015 Africa Cup qualifiers.

Doncaster Rovers in the third-tier in the
English league.
“Just got a call and I was sleeping, but
now I cannot sleep because of what I just
heard,” tweeted Jali, who moved from
Pirates to Belgium club Ostend this year.
After many years in the South African
football shadows, Meyiwa had a meteoric
climb to fame with club and country.
He displaced national squad goalkeeper
Moeneeb Josephs as first-choice at
Pirates, the only South African side to be
crowned African champions.
And a recent injury to South Africa captain
and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune gave
Meyiwa a chance in the national team,
popularly known as Bafana Bafana (The
Boys).
New national coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’
Mashaba not only promoted Durban-born
Meyiwa to replace Khune but also made
him captain of a team that has been in
the doldrums for some years.
Meyiwa responded to his promotion by
leading the team to victories over Sudan
and Congo Brazzaville and draws with
Congo and Nigeria, a country South Africa
traditionally struggle against.
He did not concede a goal in the four
matches and if South Africa defeat Sudan
in eastern city Nelspruit on October 15 they
will qualify the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations
tournament.
He was also made captain of Pirates and
helped the club defeat Ajax Cape Town 4-1
Saturday in a South African League Cup
quarter-final.
Meyiwa gave a flawless performance and
the only Ajax attempt that beat Meyiwa
came from a penalty kick.

A man’s generous donation of one hectare
of land to a wolf in sheep clothing, who
claimed to be a pastor has led to his un­
timely death in Ebonyi State.
The man, 45-year-old Nwebonyi
Nwuguru, a native of Edukwu Inyima town
was said to have given the land to the
General Overseer of Divine Salvation
Ministry, Pastor Amos Odorimo, 45, for the
purpose of building a church auditorium.
As Sunday Sun learnt, the man’s wife,
Roseline, 41, began to attend the church.
Nwuguru didn’t initially raise eyebrows
over the long hours his wife spent at the
church. Somewhere along the line, the
pastor opened the door wide for the devil
and of course went beyond his pastoral
brief. He began to minister to the woman’s
body rather than her soul.
At the headquarters of the State Criminal
Investigation Department of the Ebonyi
State Police Command where he and
Roseline are being held as investigation
into the alleged murder continues, Odorimo
spoke with Sunday Sun .
“I am married and have five children. The
deceased Nwebonyi Nwugwu was nice to
me. He gave me a hectare of land to build
my church. His wife, Roseline Nwuguru
attended my church. It was from there that
I started having love affair with her. When
the love was getting deep we found out
that the deceased was disturbing us and
we have to plan for him,” Odorimo said.
When Nwuguru got wind of the strong
and deep romantic relationship between his
wife and Odorimo, the fake pastor, he
naturally screamed blue murder. With their
love affair known to Nwuguru, Odorimo
and Roseline were deeply rattled, but
refused entreaties to end the relationship.
Rather, they allegedly connived to solve
the problem permanently, and invited the
devil to be their chief adviser.
Act 2, Scene 2: On September 30, 2014,
unsuspecting Nwuguru decided to visit his
farm. Promptly, Odorimo offered to give
him a ride on his motorcycle. Along the
way Odorimo stopped and dismounted
from the motorcycle.
Asked what happened thereafter, Odorimo
gave this blood chilling response: “I took
deceased’s cutlass and cut him on the
head. His wife also hit him on the head
with a big stick. He died on the spot and
we ran away to Benue State, but men of
the local vigilance group arrested us and
handed us over to the police.”
Roseline Nwuguru, who hails from Ado
LocalGovernment Area of Benue State
while corroborating the account of Odorimo
said: “I have seven children for my late
husband. He stopped people from entering
the church because he had
misunderstanding with Pastor Odorimo.
Actually I was having a love affair with
Pastor Odorimo. I don’t regret my action
and joining in killing my husband. He was
a wicked man, because he prevented
people from entering the church.”
After speaking with Sunday Sun, the two
suspects, Pastor Odorimo and Roseline
Nwugwuru ate lunch together from the
same plate as a way of showing their love
for each other.
Notwithstanding their show of deep
affection for each other, Ebonyi State
Commissioner, Maigari Dikko has assured
that the suspects would have their day in
court once the police conclude
investigations.

Major General Muhammadu Buhari, a
former Head of State, says he is keeping
an open mind about the possibility of
picking a Muslim as his running mate if he
gets the presidential nomination of the All
Progressives Congress (APC). The issue of
Muslim-Muslim ticket is seen as a potential
setback for the APC in the election
because of the increasingly political nature
of religion in recent years.
Buhari, in particular, is perceived as an
extremist and his likely combination with
another Muslim for the presidential election
is considered in some quarters as too
sensitive.
But, in an interview with TheCable ,
Buhari said he had demonstrated to
Nigerians that he is not a fundamentalist
and “there is nothing more I can do”. He
said: “Nigerians will always uncover
impossible room for manoeuvre for
politicians. I had to face one of the
governors during one of our party’s
meetings [over the issue of religion].
“In 2003, I chose Chuba Okadigbo as my
running mate. He was a Roman Catholic.
He was an Igbo. In 2007, I picked Edwin
Ume-Ezeoke. He was a Roman Catholic.
He was an Igbo. And in 2010, I chose even
a pastor. Tunde Bakare. “Honestly, what
do Nigerians want me to do? If they don’t
believe I’m not a fundamentalist, what else
can I do?”
He likened his situation to that of Moshood
Abiola, a southern Muslim, who picked
Babagana Kingibe, a northern Muslim, as
running mate in the 1993 presidential
election. The Muslim-Muslim ticket went on
to win an election that is still considered
by many as the most credible in Nigeria’s
history.
“I have not absolutely closed my mind to
picking a Christian or Muslim as running
mate if I get the ticket. Because I firmly
believe that Nigerians, having gone
through what they have gone through,
realise it is not a matter of religion, but a
matter of Nigeria.
“And the main religions, Christianity and
Islam, they know and they believe in the
almighty God. The question of stealing and
short-changing people in the name of
religion should stop,” he said.
He made reference to the 1961 northern
house of assembly election, when Ibrahim
Imam, a Kanuri Muslim from Borno, won
an election to represent Tivland, a Catholic
domain in the Middle Belt, after being
sponsored by Joseph Tarka, the leading Tiv
politician then.
“This new phenomenon of religion is
another blackmail political confusionists in
Nigeria are bringing to the fore,” he said.
He also said religion cannot be an issue if
he wins APC’s ticket and goes ahead to
win the presidential election, because of
the background of many political leaders
from the south-west.
The wives of Bola Tinubu, APC national
leader; Oyo governor, Abiola Ajimobi;
Lagos governor, Babatunde Fashola; Ogun
governor, Ibikunle Amosun; and former
APC interim chairman, Bisi Akande, are all
Christians, Buhari pointed out.
“For goodness sake, the children of these
political leaders were bred and brought up
by Christian mothers. You think those
people, wherever they participate, they will
bring a religious issue? What kind of
people are we? Nigerians will always bring
something to cause confusion while we are
trying to stabilise the system,” he said.
Fashola, a Muslim, is one of those touted
to be his running mate, although
TheCable also reported recently that
former attorney-general of Lagos, Yemi
Osinbajo, a professor of law and a pastor in
the Redeemed Christians Church of God, is
being considered as well.
Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers State,
is also on the cards.

As Nigerians await the outcome of the
investigation panel inaugurated to look into
what led to the recent riot in Kirikiri
Medium Security prison, more facts have
continued to emerge on what really
transpired in the incident which claimed at
least three lives and more than 15 others
injured.
Coming to limelight are fresh claims by in­
mates and ex-inmates that there are
privileged or super prisoners in Nigerian
prisons, thus confirming the popular quote
in George Orwell’s Animal Farm that all
animals are equal but some are more
equal than the others. The Prison
authorities, however, deny this insisting
that no such thing happens in their
custody.
Investigations revealed that the prison riot
was caused by a move by the newly
posted Deputy Comptroller of Immigration,
Kayode Odeyemi to strip some privileged
prisoners of their privileges. Some inmates
also accused the prison warders of
diverting gifts meant for them for their
personal use, adding that most of the
materials seized from them by the DCP
were in turn sold to them secretly by the
same officials. They insisted that
preference was always given to some
inmates who are referred to as super or
privileged prisoners.
In a bid to authenticate claims by the
inmates, Saturday Sun spoke to some
ex-inmates most of whom were re-
arrested by the police while allegedly
committing another crime. One of such is
Obinna Enyinnaya who spent two years
and eight months in Kirikiri Medium prison.
Obinna was recently rearrested by
operatives of the Special Anti Robbery
Squad, Lagos police command two months
after he was released from prison. He was
picked up alongside seven others after
raiding a house in Lagos. He insists that
there are cells known as privileged cells.
In a chat with Saturday Sun, Obinna
recalled that while in prison, those
privileged cells were meant for those who
could pay N50,000 and above to secure a
space. “Those are meant for the big boys
who can buy the space for N50,000. They
are expected to be dropping money regu­
larly or lose the space. If I have money, I
can also secure one. They are the ones
who are allowed to use their private
generators, cook their food and make use
of table fans in their cells .
Another ex-inmate, Kayode Dada, who
spent 10 years in Abeokuta prison, claimed
that he served Otunba Gani Adams,
National Co-ordinator of Oodua Peoples
Congress (OPC) while he was in prison in
2003.
According to him, the OPC leader was one
of those referred to as super prisoners.
“These are big men in the society and due
to one reason or the other found
themselves behind the bar. When these
people come to prison, they find it difficult
to cope with the situation. They can’t fetch
water to bathe. They also find it difficult to
do other certain things. When they are
confronted with such situations, they now
give money to warders and prison officials
to pick some of us to help them carry out
these chores. During my time at Abeokuta
prison, Otunba Gani Adams was brought to
the prison. This was in 2003, I was among
other inmates that were assigned to be
assisting him. I was in the prison for 10
years, between 1995 and 2005 when
Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the then Ogun
State governor, granted me clemency”, he
added.

The Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria,
Tagelsir Ali, is dead, the country’s
embassy confirmed on Friday in Abuja.
The Media Advisor to the embassy,
Mohammed Abdulrahman, told the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Ali, 66, died
at about 1 a.m. on Friday at the National
Hospital, Abuja.
“He had malaria; there were some
complications and he passed away around
1 a.m. early this morning.
“There is a Presidential jet coming by 5
p.m. to take the remains to Sudan for
burial.
“He was 66 years old. He loved working in
Nigeria and had zeal to develop the
bilateral relationship between Sudan and
Nigeria and was able to stretch himself
very well,” he said.
Abdulrahman said that the embassy had
received many visitors since the diplomat’s
demise was announced, adding that a
condolence register had been opened for
him at the embassy.
Contacted, Permanent Secretary, Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, Martin Uhomoibhi, to
NAN that the ministry was aware of the
ambassador’s death.

The sister of Nigeria’s powerful petroleum
minister has been kidnapped in the oil hub
of Port Harcourt, police said Friday, in the
latest abduction targeting a prominent
political family.
Osio Agama, whose sister Diezani Alison-
Madueke leads Africa’s largest oil industry,
was seized at gunpoint as she approached
her car on Tuesday night, River state
police spokesman Ahmad Muhammad said.
Muhammad said police “were not aware if
any ransom demand had been made” and
the motive for the abduction was unknown
but the southern oil-producing Niger Delta
region has seen waves of ransom
kidnappings in recent years.
One of the most prominent cases came in
December 2012, when Finance Minister
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s 82-year-old
mother Kamene Okonjo was abducted from
her home, also in Delta state.
Okonjo-Iweala and Alison-Madueke are
widely seen as the two most powerful
members of President Goodluck Jonathan’s
cabinet.
Jonathan’s 70-year-old uncle was also
kidnapped earlier this year in Bayelsa
state, which neighbours Delta.
Some have sought to attach a political
motive to attacks targeting Nigeria’s most
powerful families.
The finance minister implied that her
mother was seized because of her
ministry’s crackdown on oil companies
which had abused the country’s rotten fuel
subsidy scheme.
But such links were never proven and
Kamene Okonjo was released a week after
her abduction.
The security forces and affected families
almost never confirm ransom payments but
most believe kidnappers in the Niger Delta
are seeking financial gain.
Despite producing roughly two million
barrels of oil per day, the area remains
acutely poor with high unemployment.
Gang activity is rampant and kidnappings
have at times been perpetrated on a near
weekly basis.
Local politicians, prominent businessmen
and foreigners have been among the
targets.

Truth be told, almost all Nigerians loved Dbanj, his music was in the lips of both young and old with the intro Don Jazzy again. It seemed like Don jazzy and Banj were inseparable, until the news broke.
