SportsAFCON 2015: Three Guinea Fans Killed By Grenade by Akbee(op): 4:55pm On Jan 23, 2015
Police have confirmed three people have
been killed and another is critically ill after
a grenade exploded in a bar packed with
football fans in Guinea’s capital Conakry,
during their Africa Cup of Nations opener.
A transmission problem in the area saw
hordes of supporters gather inside the
public house, but disaster struck when a
local man – who is said to have had
military training – released the device into
the crowd.
An eyewitness told guineenews: “When
the grenade exploded, I thought it was a
short-circuit, but the noise was too loud
and there was a lot of smoke. Luckily, the
rest of my family couldn’t get here – if
they had, they might have been killed.
Guinea drew their opening game 1-1 with
the Ivory Coast but their captain Kamil
Zayatte said news of the incident had cast
a shadow over what should have been a
moment of celebration for the nation.
“We wanted to give the people back home
something to cheer, and there were parties
all over Conakry [the capital city] when we
drew 1-1 with Ivory Coast in our opening
game,” he said. “Then we heard about the
deaths. It’s terrible news.”
The Syli Nationale have had a nightmare
preparation for the tournament, being
exiled because of the presence of the
Ebola virus in Guinea, where nearly 2,000
people have been killed by the disease.
They had to play all their ‘home’ qualifiers
in Morocco, and were abused at away
games by fans who shouted “Ebola!
Ebola!” at the team. Airport workers in
Uganda and Togo told them, “We don’t
want you here. You have the virus.”
Guinea are almost without support in
Equatorial Guinea, while their rivals in
Group D have large followings. Ivory Coast
had large groups of orange-clad fans on
all sides of the pitch at the first game,
while neighbouring Cameroon, in the
second match, were backed by about
3,000 supporters who live and work in
Malabo.
Mali, who held Cameroon 1-1, had the
biggest following – about 4,000. There are
many thousands of Malians working in
Bata and Malabo, Equatorial Guinea’s two
biggest cities. All games in Malabo are
already sold out.
Guinea’s coach, Michel Dussuyer, was
asked by Goal if this put his team at a
disadvantage. “We are used to it,” he said.
“If the people of Equatorial Guinea
supported us it would be very welcome –
we would really appreciate it. But we
played all our qualifying games with no
home support, in Morocco, and here it is
the same context. We will just have to
focus on our task, on our football.”

HealthHIV/AIDS Drugs To Be Manufactured In Nigeria - UNAIDS by Akbee(op): 4:50pm On Jan 22, 2015
Dr Bilali Camara, UNAIDS Country Director, said on Thursday that four companies will commence production of anti-retroviral drugs in Nigeria.

Camara, who is also the UNAIDS Focal Point for ECOWAS, disclosed in an interview with newsmen in Abuja. He said the local production of anti-retroviral drugs would enable people access treatment at a cheaper rate. He added that it will also help those on life treatment, stressing that people live on treatment for 15 to 30 years.

“We have commenced negotiations with four pharmaceutical companies; the companies have been certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the general manufacturing practices,” he said. The official said WHO would assist to conduct the prequalification processes, “and as soon as that is concluded they will commence the production of the anti-retroviral drugs in Nigeria’’.

Camara said many West and Central African states would benefit from the production, because nobody is producing the drugs in this region. He added that beside Nigeria, seven million other people may need the drugs for treatment from West and Central Africa, which shows that there is good return of investment to the companies. In related development, Camara said UNAIDS would enter into partnership with telecommunication companies to ensure that basic information about HIV/AIDS was advertised.

He said this would assist to further increase access to treatment to 101 million people in Nigeria are targeted. “We want to give more people access to basic information on HIV/AIDS. We want our target to know how to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV where and how to get HIV/AIDS related services. So that in the next few years we have more people accessing the services which many result into many infants born HIV positive mothers and born infants without the disease,” he said.

According to him, “if we do it correctly it will effect on the overall HIV transmission in the country’’. Camara said: “Things are going in the right direction, more people are on treatment, more people are accessing preventive measures and new infections are coming down. It is not as speedy as we want it but clearly things are on the right track.”

EducationRegister Before 30 Jan Or Risk Being Left Out:JAMB Advises Candidates by Akbee(op): 4:42pm On Jan 22, 2015
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation
Board (JAMB) on Thursday advised
candidates intending to register for the
2015 Computer Based Test (CBT) to do so
immediately.
JAMB said the advice became necessary
because the website of the board would
be closed on Jan. 30.
A statement signed by the Public Relations
Officer of JAMB, Mr Fabian Benjamin, in
Lagos noted that over 1.4 million
candidates had registered for the first ever
all- computer mode of examination.
It said the sale of forms for the
examination commenced since September,
2014.
“The 2015 UTME application closes on
Friday, 30th January, 2015 and all
candidates desirous of sitting for the
examination are advised to immediately
obtain the application documents at the
designated banks.
“This is to ensure that they get registered
and avoid being left out.
“In view of the above, the board has
completed all processes and preparations
and has put in place all logistics needed to
conduct a hitch-free examination,” the
statement said.
It said that no fewer than 400 centres
would be used for the examination in
Nigeria and abroad.
According to the statement, members of
other examination bodies in Africa and
beyond have indicated interest to
understudy the board’s CBT during the
examination.
It said the development was an indication
of the confidence of the international
community in the board’s ability as
manifested in the two previous exercises in
2013 and 2014.
The statement urged candidates to be
conscious of the fact that the 2015 UTME
was only on the CBT mode.
“Candidates are to disregard any contrary
information as the examination is
scheduled to hold beginning March 4th
2015.
The statement further advised candidates
to shun all acts that were contrary to the
conduct of an examination of international
standard like the board’s CBT.
It warned that the board would not
hesitate to impose severe sanction on any
candidate found wanting.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the board
wishes to state that any candidate who
registered twice will have his or her result
cancelled.
“JAMB has a mechanism that detects
double registration, irrespective of how it is
disguised.
“The board has also made adequate
arrangements to ensure that blind
candidates sit for the 2015 UTME, using
CBT,’’ it said.

Five policemen attached to the Anti-
Robbery Squad of the Area M Police
Command have been put in detention for
allegedly taking a bribe of N150, 000 from
a suspected fraudster.
It was gathered that the police officers had
arrested the complainant, identified simply
as Ifeanyi, for allegedly engaging in
internet fraud.
He was said to have been led to the
nearest ATM to make withdrawal so as to
be free of the accusation.
A police source said, “The incident
happened on Wednesday, January 7, 2015.
The five police officers arrested him and
then took him to the ATM.
“After the withdrawal of an initial sum of
N100, 000, they asked him to make a
transfer of the remaining sum.
“After he did that, they freed him and
allowed him to go.”
Ifeanyi was said to have petitioned the
police, asking for the probe of the five men
and claiming that he was innocent of the
accusation.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspected
cops were rounded up and put into
detention.
Another source said the men were being
held at the State Criminal Investigation

PoliticsDeath Wish Advert:NRHC To Sanction Fayose by Akbee(op): 6:29am On Jan 22, 2015
Says Mbaka’s message against Jonathan
violates Electoral Act
By Soni Daniel, Regional Editor, North
ABUJA — The National Human Rights
Commission, yesterday, reviewed the
controversial advert placed in some major
national newspapers in the country by
Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State with a
verdict that the material amounted to
“hate speech.”
Though the commission may not
immediately arrest and prosecute Fayose
because of the immunity he currently
enjoys as a sitting governor, the rights
commission might recommend him for
appropriate sanctions once he leaves office.
This indication emerged at a stakeholders’
roundtable organised by the NHRC for civil
society groups, mainstream and social
media partners in Abuja, yesterday.
Chairman of the NHRC, Professor Chidi
Odinkalu, who addressed journalists at the
forum, decried the death wish publication
by the advertiser, saying it offended public
decency and violated all known norms of
decorum.
Odinkalu said the governor, who is a
member of the National Council of States,
which makes decisions for the security of
the country, should have exhibited caution
and statesmanship in sending out the
message.
The NHRC chairman noted that the
governor went too far in his controversial
message not minding that even the
children of the former Northern leaders he
showed to have died in office might feel
bad while the same party also expected
them to cast their votes for them in the
forthcoming elections.
Odinkalu pointed out that the governor’s
advert was not only in bad taste but it
also violated Section 95 of the Electoral Act
and should be made to pay for such open
infraction.
Section 95(1) and (2) of the EA says: “A
political campaign or slogan shall not be
tainted with abusive language directly or
indirectly likely to incite religious, ethnic,
tribal or sectional feelings.
“Abusive, intemperate, slanderous or base
language or insinuations or innuendos
designed or likely to provoke violent
reaction or emotions shall not be employed
or used in political campaigns.”
Mbaka breaches Electoral Act
The commission also took up issue with
the Parish Priest of Adoration Ground, Rev
Father Ejike Mbaka, for using his pulpit to
canvass support for and against President
Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu
Buhari.
Odinkalu said Mbaka breached the
Electoral Act by first prophesying to the
First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, last
November that Jonathan would win the
2015 election and later predicting during his
New Year day preaching that Jonathan
should resign and leave the stage for
Buhari for not doing enough.
The chairman said the action of the
Reverend Father breached Section 95 (3) of
theElectoral Act, which states that “places
designated for religious worship, police
station and public offices shall not be used
for political campaigns, rallies and
processions or to promote, propagate or
attack political parties, candidates, their
political ideologies or programmes.

PoliticsUN Backs African Force To Fight Boko Haram by Akbee(op): 2:33pm On Jan 20, 2015
The UN Security Council urged central
African countries to step up plans for a
multinational force to fight Boko Haram, in
its first overall response to the threat
posed by the Nigerian jihadists.
The council issued a 13-point statement
strongly condemning attacks by Boko
Haram, in particular those involving
children used as suicide bombers, and
demanded an end to the violence.
On the eve of a key meeting in Niger of
regional leaders, the 15-member council
urged Nigeria’s neighbors to advance
planning for the deployment a multinational
task force to drive out Boko Haram.
Chad is set to contribute a sizeable
contingent to the force along with
Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and Benin.
The multinational force has been under
discussion since last year, but divisions
over the scale and scope of its operations
have slowed down the deployment.
The statement from the council came as
Boko Haram fighters seized scores of
hostages in a raid in neighboring
Cameroon on Sunday.
About two dozen hostages were later
released but the attack compounded fears
that Boko Haram was ramping up
operations beyond Nigeria’s borders.
The council expressed “deep concern that
the activities of Boko Haram are
undermining the peace and stability of the
west and central African region,” said the
statement presented by Nigeria.
Security Council reaction -
The statement was the first adopted by
the council on the threat posed by Boko
Haram, which is on the UN terrorist list.
Previous statements focused on
condemning specific attacks.
The council demanded that Boko Haram
“immediately and unequivocally cease all
hostilities and all abuses of human rights
and violations” in the presidential
statement.
It accused Boko Haram of carrying out
kidnappings, killings, hostage-taking,
pillaging, rape, sexual slavery and
recruitment of child soldiers since it
launched its campaign in 2009.
Diplomats said the statement pointed to a
shift from Nigeria which has shied away
from discussing Boko Haram even though it
is one of the 10 non-permanent members
of the council.
The council statement urged regional
leaders to “undertake further planning
toward the sustainable, viable and effective
operationalization of the Multinational Joint
Task Force.”
It urged the African countries to “identify
the means and modalities of the envisaged
deployment, especially in the areas of
intelligence sharing and joint operations.”
The advocacy group Avaaz had launched
an online petition on Friday, signed by
725,000 people, to press the Security
Council to hold an emergency meeting on
the Boko Haram crisis.
“Boko Haram has butchered its way into
the global spotlight and finally the Security
Council is reacting,” said Alice Jay,
campaign director for Avaaz.
“All eyes are now on Nigeria, its neighbors
and the international community to put
words into comprehensive action to stop
10-year-olds being strapped to bombs or
kidnapped in the night.”

RomanceRe: 3 Things Female With More Than One Sex Partner Stands To Lose Out by Akbee(m):
aging quickly due to mutiple sex partners doesn't really matter but the chances of getn inffected with STDs
Nairaland GeneralDPO(1st Olympic Gold Medalist)Chioma Ajunwa Seizes Newspapers Over Report by Akbee(op): 5:36am On Jan 20, 2015
The Divisional Police Officer of the Ogudu
Police Division, Lagos State, Chioma
Ajunwa, on Monday attacked vendors
selling The PUNCH and other newspapers
in the Ogudu-Ojota area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Ajunwa
confiscated the newspapers and ordered
that the men stop displaying the papers.
It was learnt that the DPO, an Olympic
Gold medalist, was reacting to an earlier
report by The PUNCH on the seizure of
some newspapers last week and the
demand for a N5,000 bail for the vendor
arrested.
PUNC H Metro had reported on Friday that
Ajunwa seized newspapers displayed at a
junction on the Ogudu-Ojota Road.
She was also reported to have arrested
one of the vendors, Idongesit Obot, who
slept behind the counter till the following
day.
The sum of N5,000 was allegedly
demanded for Obot’s bail, but N1,500 was
said to have been paid after much
persuasion with the Investigating Police
Officer.
A vendor, Aniekan Jackson, said Ajunwa
was angry at the report and swooped on
the vendors in the area on Monday.
He said, “She came very early this
morning (Monday), seizing our
newspapers. She also chased all the
vendors at the Ojota bus stop. She said
she does not want to see anybody here
again, adding that we should report again
to The PUNCH so that they can write
about her again.
“What do we do now? She said we should
rent shops. Are we going to stop selling
The PUNCH because of her? Or are we
going to rent shops for newspaper
business?”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth
Nwosu, had told our correspondent in the
Friday publication that the DPO’s action
was informed by the gridlock usually
caused by readers who crowded
newspaper stands every morning.
Nwosu had said Ajunwa raided the area
after several warnings did not yield any
result.
But a newspaper agent in Ojota, Arnold
Adekunle, faulted the police position,
saying if the DPO really wanted to sanitise
the area, she was supposed to work with
the local government area authorities.
Adekunle said, “The police said there had
been accident on the road because of
newspaper stands, how many accidents
have they recorded on the road? She is
just making up things. She wants to
assume the position of the local
government’s boss.”
Another vendor, who identified himself
simply as Suleiman, later informed our
correspondent that the seized newspapers
had been released to the vendors.
He added that the DPO had sworn never
to allow them sell newspapers in the area.
“She said she does not want to see us
again because we told you (PUNCH) that
the police demanded N5,000 from us. She
said we should meet PUNCH to do more
stories on her.
“There is no other place where we can sell
papers, except by the roadside. We have
been selling newspapers there for the past
10 years, and there has never been any
accident.”
The police spokesperson, Nwosu, said,
“The DPO is working as parts of efforts to
ensure free flow of traffic in and around
the Ogudu junction.
“Governor Babatunde Fashola, during his
visit to area H headquarters, where he
handed over an ICT resource centre to the
state police command, directed all traders,
including newspaper vendors, who obstruct
traffic by selling along the road and the
median to vacate such places.
“No newspapers were seized as the
traders and vendors removed their wares
from the aforementioned places.

PoliticsI Don't Have Pvc,sultan Of Sokoto Cries Out by Akbee(op): 5:25am On Jan 20, 2015
….Says millions of Nigerians may be
disenfranchised
….Condemns religious colouration of
campaigns
By Ben Agande
Abuja — The Sultan of Sokoto, His
Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III, has
expressed fears that unless something was
done urgently, millions of Nigerians,
including himself, would be disenfranchised
as they were not able to collect their
Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVCs.
Abubakar spoke in Sokoto when he
received President Goodluck Jonathna, who
was in the state for a political rally in his
palace.
He asked Jonathan to ensure that the
Independent National Electoral Commission,
INEC, provides all
eligible voters with their cards before the
elections as well as ensure that
government takes steps to respect the
people’s wishes by delivering credible, free
and fair elections.
He said: “Let’s respect people’s wishes;
let’s not try to disenfranchise anybody. We
have had issues of the PVCs and I want to
tell you that even myself, I don’t have a
PVC, so it means I will not vote on
February 14.
“So, we have to look for a way out. It is
for your government to now look for what
to do; how to ensure that all the cards get
to the voters before the voting day or in
the alternative, find a way out because in
any problem there is a solution and we
believe you will find solutions as regard
this very serious hitch facing us because
millions of Nigerians seem to be heading
towards disenfranchisement and they
won’t be able to vote but I have heard
comments from the INEC Chairman. We are
still waiting for our cards to come.”
The Sultan said the difficulties in obtaining
the PVC was one of the challenges
bothering him and other leaders as it
appeared millions of Nigerians would be
disenfranchised during this year’s general
elections.
Condemns religious colouration of
campaigns
The Muslim leader condemned the religious
colouration being given to this year’s
campaigns and called on politicians to
rather focus on issues.
He noted that because of the country’s
diversity, it was not “possible” for elections
in Nigeria to be all about religion.
Sultan said: “They will come to seek the
votes of the common man … but they will
not see you again for four years but we
have the privilege of seeing you everyday
and maybe every time and we always
express to you the problems of our
people.”
Tasks politicians on Abuja peace accord
He challenged all politicians to not only
abide by the Abuja Peace Accord between
President Jonathan and the candidate of
the All Progressives Congress, APC, General
Muhammadu Buhari and 12 others, but
also ensure that their various supporters at
all levels get the message and behave
accordingly.
He further decried the prevailing insecurity
in the country and urged the president to
stop it by ensuring that Nigerians once
again, enjoy peace.
He said: “As the leader of the Muslims in
this country, I will not fail to intimate the
President and his government with the
problems Muslims face in this country, that
is our own area of attention as Muslim
leaders. We care about how we live as a
people and we are very worried about how
we are living now as a people and God
Almighty who placed leadership of the
country on your shoulders, we feel we
must always alert you on how we have
been living.
“As such time now and I will say never a
time in this country’s history that we faced
very serious challenges like what are
facing now. The whole politicking had been
turned into either religion of ethnic matters
and this should not be so because we see
what happens across the world.
“We are worried because religion had been
brought into it, we made it very clear in
2011, there is no way religion should be an
issue in the election campaigns or even the
election itself.
“As you have seen here, I think there are
more Muslims in this room than Christians
and coming here now to come for prayers
for success of your campaigns goes to
show that as the leader of the Muslims, I
have no choice than to pray for you.
Issues that should face political leaders
“Therefore, the insecurity issues facing us
in all parts of country, we have heard
campaign promises left, right and centre
but we want to hear from our political
leaders, how do you intend to resolve the
security issues; how do you intend to
tackle unemployment, how do you intend
to tackle the rot in education?
“These are issues that should face the
various political leaders instead of
mudslinging, calling each other names and
whatever. We are very worried about what
we read in newspapers, watch on
television and the comments we hear from
our people, brothers and friends. Politics of
this country has now been turned into a
war, families are being divided, friends
have become enemies just because of
seeking for political office.”
Advises journalists
The Muslim leader urged Nigerian
journalists not to compound the already
worsening security situation in the country
by re-publishing the offensive French
magazine cartoons of Prophet Muhammad.
While condemning the killing of the
journalists who first published the cartoons
and the reprisal killings and violence that
followed in some other countries, Abubakar
urged Nigerians not to let negative
influences of the Western world cause
disruption of peace in Nigeria.
He wished the Jonathan campaign team
well in their endeavours as he prayed for
peaceful and fair elections.
Jonathan
assures Sultan
Jonathan had told the Sultan earlier that
he was in the palace to formerly introduce
himself and his vice as candidates in the
2015 general elections.
He assured the Sultan that the PDP-led
government under his leadership was
committed to transforming the country,
noting that various interventions in
agriculture and the education sector such
as the the Almajeri programme were
geared towards speedy economic growth.

RomanceRe: Reasons Why Many Guys Insist On Getting Into Ladies' Pants In Relationships by Akbee(m): 5:10am On Jan 20, 2015
tosyne2much:
Critics is something that is inevitable in life, therefore I will keep doing what I'm good at no matter how people criticize nor condemn because that's my style & that's what makes me unique.

**Just grab your aboniki balm & read meticulously **

Reasons Why Many Guys Insist On Getting Into Ladies' Pants In Relationships

1. Ladies Who Don't Allow Sex Often Misbehave
I know that most ladies will disagree with this point but there's an atom of truth in it. As a matter of fact, most ladies (not all though) who don't allow sex in relationships often misbehave because they know they have nothing to lose. Most of them might not even think twice b4 dumping you because they are not sexually attached to you

2. They Don't Want To Be Tagged Mugu
YES ! Many dudes seem to be very careful in dealing with ladies who always claims that sex is NOT a yardstick for LOVE yet these ladies will screw you, extort you & will never want you to get under their pants. These same ladies will go to their friends and tell them how MUGU you are.

3. Wrong Orientation
I grew up with an orientation and mentality of " NO DULL YOURSELF" when dealing with a lady who doesn't want SEX in a relationship because another dude somewhere might just be doing the work while you are playing the role of ROMEO.. Hahaha !!! Isn't that funny ? I'm pretty sure I'm NOT the only one with this orientation & mentality

4. To Boost Their Ego
MY OPINION on why guys want sex in relationships is to boost their EGO, or make them feel "PROUD, more so, they derive JOY in it"; thinking "oh, straph that girl! she was so nice.. blah blah" but dont take under the consideration on how the girl feels like sure

5. To Have Dominion & Control
Some dudes have the belief that sex will make them have total control and have dominion over a lady, therefore they don't joke with sex in a relationship because once a girl has sex she is considered "USED" but a guy can lie about his past and nobody can prove otherwise. It's
totally unfair but that is the reality of
today's society.

6. It Is My Duty & Entitlement
Hahaha !!! This also got me cracking. Some dudes who are in relationships don't have a reason why they should have sex with you. They only feel it is their DUTY and it's their ENTITLEMENT as a boyfriend. That's all grin

7. Emotional Attachment
Many dudes only want sex because they believe it will make a lady stay glued. #if I hear#

8. The experience Of Friends
They must have heard about their friends' experiences of how they loved and dated ladies who lied about being a virgin for almost 4 year & she they later caught sleeping with another dude with their two naked eyes. Many dudes are brainwashed by others experiences, therefore they don't wouldn't want to experience that

9. Sex Is Love
There's this saying amongst youth that sex is important in a relationship but NOT a necessity. However, many dudes wrongly interprete this saying and will always want sex so as to know how true a ladies is into them. However, some guys will tell you anything to get sex, even though they don't love. Some will promise to open a supermarket for you, some will promise you marriage, therefore if you really love them you would have sex with them.

10. Sex Urge (Konji)
All the aforementioned points still boil down to SEX URGE (Konji). The hormone testosterone is
very strong in MOST young guys that they don't even hide it. Some are able to curb their urge while some are crazy about it as if their lives depend on it. This is the major reasons why guy always want to have sex.

BusinessKerosene Price To Be Slashed To N5O Per Litre - NNPC by Akbee(op): 12:02pm On Jan 19, 2015
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has initiated a scheme aimed at getting kerosene to consumers across the country at the regulated price of N50 per litre.

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, of the corporation, Mr Ohi Alegbe.

It said the scheme ‘Kero Correct’ initiative’ was also aimed at cutting off the several layers of middlemen who made it difficult for the end user to enjoy the subsidy on the product.

The statement said that the Executive Director, Commercial, of the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Mr Frank Amego, announced the initiative at a one-day workshop in Abuja.

It said the workshop that was organised by the NNPC was to enlighten some Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and volunteers engaged to help monitor the sales of the product at NNPC Mega and affiliate stations across the country.

It quoted Amego as saying that the scheme was aimed at getting kerosene to the Nigerians who used the product as their domestic cooking fuel at the correct price

He observed that though kerosene was the most subsidised product, Nigerians had not been enjoying the subsidy.

He said this was because of the long arbitrage system involved in its distribution and retailing, and diversion of the product by marketers to the construction industry where it was used for blending bitumen.

“The Kero Correct initiative is thus designed to distribute and sell kerosene directly to end users from NNPC Retail mega and affiliate stations across the country at the government-regulated price of N50 per litre to ensure effective control,” he stated.

He said the scheme which would be officially launched soon, would involve the distribution of a total of 1,500 trucks of kerosene across NNPC Retail’s mega and affiliate stations across the country.

This, he said, was to ensure that each consumer gets at least 25 litres of the product over the next three months

Scientists have found a new species of
mosquitoes resistant to bed nets treated
with malaria insecticide in Mali.
The discovery by scientists from the
University of California,United States, is
coming at a time when the outbreak of the
Ebola Virus Disease has killed more than
7,000 people in West Africa.
According to the World Health Organisation,
malaria kills nearly one million people,
mostly children, every year.
The organisation also posits that more
than three million people- more than half
of the world’s population- is at risk of
malaria.
In a study published in the journal,
Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences, researchers said the new species
were created by interbreeding between
two mosquito species. The study also
maintained that the development was an
‘evolutionary change caused by the
introduction of the treated nets to the
environment.’
The lead researcher, Gregory Lanzaro said
the development was not surprising.
“Growing resistance has been observed for
some time. Recently, it has reached a level
at some localities in Africa where it is
resulting in the failure of the nets to
provide meaningful control and it is my
opinion that this will increase,’’ he said.
A statement by the University on Monday,
said the study, ‘provides convincing
evidence indicating that a man-made
change in the environment –the
introduction of insecticide- has altered the
revolutionary relationship between two
species in this case, a breakdown in the
reproductive isolation that separates them.’
A virologist with the Lagos University
Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Prof. Sunday
Omilabu, who spoke to our correspondent
on Tuesday, said the new species of
mosquitoes would pose challenges to
health systems.
While admitting that scientists will need to
control its spread, he said it was important
for people to keep a clean environment.
“The control will be difficult. We have to
study this species and destroy their lava.
We have to act on their breeding methods
because there is the possibility if
transmitting viral diseases. We need to
make sure that the environment is clean
and do away with stagnant water where
their eggs can hatch,’’ he said.

FoodSuper Food You Should Always Eat by Akbee(op): 5:50am On Jan 14, 2015
When a lot of us were younger, we were
consistently being told about how
important it was to gobble up our fruits
and vegetables. And if we didn’t finish
every piece or at least make a conscious
effort to, we would be deprived of our
favourite sweet or TV programme. Little did
we know this was done in our own
interest.
There are numerous benefits to different
fruits and vegetables which are readily
available, and hellofood.com suggests
some of the fruits below are more than
just pretty colours.
Apple: Eating an apple daily can lower
cholesterol and helps keep Alzheimer’s
away. It also reduces the risk of lung/
bladder cancer, stroke and heart diseases.
A recent study found that women who ate
three apples or pears per day lost more
weight while dieting than women who did
not eat any while dieting.
Bananas: Bananas are rich in vitamin B6
and they are a good source of fibre,
vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. The
potassium found in bananas helps to
regulate blood pressure and may reduce
the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.
Bananas also contain plenty of
carbohydrates which are the body’s main
source of energy. They are also easy to
digest.
Carrots: Carrots contain carotene, a
chemical that is converted into vitamin A
by the body, It helps improve eyesight and
prevent night blindness. Carrots have also
proven to be effective in improving the
appearance of the skin, hair and nails and
for nursing mothers, enhance the quality
of breast milk
Grapes: This alkaline fruit helps greatly to
decrease the acidity of the uric acid and
lends itself further in aiding the elimination
of acid from the system, thus benefiting
the kidneys greatly.
